Hi, my name is Danielle From Ohio and I own a Blue Heller who is
reaching 1 year old. We have cattle and need him to begin working. The
other two hellers caught on quick, Kip is getting to the age to really
be invloved. He is quick, as well as, an independent spirit. He listens
ok to me but will not respond to any other handlers. I have signed up
for a herding class in March and obedience lessons this month.

I am not interested in showing, I really need him to work as well as
the other dogs in the field. I believe he is extremly intelligent, but
needs some extra attention.

job teaching all breeds - both lessons and on site boarding/training. He keeps
cattle also- 859-509-1293.

Marc Christopher will be at our place betweeen Cinci & Cols in April, August &
November. Flyer was posted to this list afew days ago.

Herding Clinic

Herding 101
  Shelties Only
March 25, 2006

HERDING 101 - Introduction to herding

Learn the terms and basic concepts of modern day herding such as: square flank,
outrun, flight zone, pressure & balance, and driving. This is the perfect
foundation course to build all your training around. The clinic includes 3
parts: a morning lecture, student participation in a "flight-zone"
identification exercise, and the greater part of the day is devoted to working
with your dogs on sheep.

PREREQUISTE: None

The clinic is recommended for all beginners and novice-level herding
enthusiasts. Intermediate and advanced herders can gain new insights on their
current methods -- new ideas on techniques may help strengthen your dog's
foundation skills.

CLINIC SCHEDULE

8:00 am -- Lecture and classroom demonstrations. The basics are explained in
everyday language partnered with simple, yet amazingly effective visual aids to
help you see what herding is all about. Past students, both with and without
herding experience, rave about how the lecture session alone is worth the price
of admission.

Mid-morning -- Practical Demonstration. The class moves outside for a practical
demonstration in natural stock movement to show how approaching people, dogs
and/or other stimuli affect movement of sheep, ducks or other herd animals.
This is followed by some hands-on experimenting by students in pairs on stock
(without their dogs). You will see for yourself how the basics concepts from
the morning lecture all fit together in a real-life situation as you learn to
"read the stock".

Later morning until about 5:00 pm - Working session. In all cases your dogs
will get more than one opportunity on the stock as time, daylight and weather
allow. The instructors will give you plenty of feedback on what herding
instinct your dog displays and recommendations on how to proceed with further
training.

REGISTRATION

Working spots are $65 for the day and are limited to:

· 12 Beginner dogs

o If you have questions on experience level, please call/e-mail to
discuss.

o All working sports are reserved on a first-come first-served basis with
a $25 non-refundable deposit. Balance of payment is due 7 days before the
clinic.

Audit spots are $30 for the day - unlimited.

· Attend the lecture portion

· Watch the practical demonstrations and working sessions

CLINIC DETAILS

For information on the farm and directions go to: www.dogwoodfarmherding.com

Coffee and bottled water will be available on site

Please bring your own food for snacks and lunch.

Fast food places are about 10 minutes away.

The Old English Sheepdog club of America is hosting the annual national
specialty in Williamsburg, Virginia, the week of October 2, 2006.

We are looking for a site to hold an AHBA trial, open to other breeds as
well. Most of the dogs would be on the first or second leg of the herding
instinct test. A few dogs are ready for JHD and a few dogs are HTAD 1, 1
or 3. Sheep or Goats.

Money is a factor. A site an hour or so away is within reason.

We need to make a decision soon.

Hickory Hill doesn't have the right kind of set up for AHBA and it's
longer than an hour away from Williamsburg. Also, the sheep would not be
appropriate.

Ginny Myers is in Virginia Beach, I'm sorry I don't have her e-mail
address. You also should try Debbie McCluskey - I don't have her e-mail
address either but she is in Chesapeake, VA and hosts a couple of AHBA
trials every year. Great place for an AHBA trial. Good sheep and ducks.
Both are AHBA members.

Hi Maureen!

Even though I doubt they are an hour from Williamsburg, Roy and Debbie
Johnson in Gladys, VA are great people and very enthusiastic about
herding, especially to newcomers. I hear good things about their trials,
too. Heck, if you had room, I'd be tempted to come from NJ and enter at
least one dog!

Here is their contact info:
Roy & Debbie Johnson
1049 East Ferry Road
Gladys, Virginia 24554
434-332-5368
breezyhillfarm1049@...

Also, do you know anyone in the Williamsburg area to give you estimates
of travel times? Sometimes, a place looks close but isn't really when
traffic and road conditions are factored in.

Good luck!

Smooches to all the OES poo-ches!

Thanks, Joyce

Our National Chair lives in the vicinity, and growing up in the east, I
think in terms of time, not miles. Drives the Midwesterners crazy. When
they ask how far it is to the farm, I say 15 minutes.

We will definitely let the members on the list know about our trial, and
encourage others to participate.

To All

Boone had to be put down today - his great heart was still strong even though
his old body gave out. He was well over 16, despite the cancer that was supposed
to take him 3 years ago.

Any of you who saw him working know that he was a unique stockdog. His
instincts, never tamed but always there, never failed when the situation
required power or inventiveness. He was gentle with the lambs, respected by the
ewes, and powerful (and fast) enough to handle any critter - be it that nasty
ram or a set of big tough cattle.

True, he thought Trials were utterly foolish and thus, despite his real skills,
never quite got those last 3 HC points. Nonetheless, he taught me so much about
reading stock and my failings as a trainer that the following generations have
benefited.

Boone was surely a one of a kind dog and will be missed.

He is missed here. I saw Boone work at an ASCA trial early on when I
was "doing" herding and I loved his spirit and his ability. What a
great dog and his legacy is the dogs that have followed him and the
memories we all have.

My heart goes out to you Ann.
No matter what the age of a dog
when he leaves us, it is as
Albert Payson Terhune said.
"All dogs die too soon"
Perhaps when you feel up to
it, you will write something on
to what you attribute your
gallant friend's longevity. It seems
when I was a child, a sixteen year
old dog of a medium to large breed
was commonplace. Today, a dog
not a toy over the age of twelve is
rare.

Take care of yourself.

Traffic in the Tidewater area can be almost as bad as Northern Virginia. A 15
mile drive can take 30 minutes or an hour depnding on the time of day and the
season in Tidewater. Still not a bad as Northern VA DC area where a 15 mile
commute can take an hour or more during rush hour. BTW Roy Johnson's place is
probably a 3 hour drive from Williamsburg. Kate, Duncan and I may attend. Kate
will be a year old by then and ready to trial. If I had a better recall on her
she could get her HCT now but she is only 4 months old. Bummer especially with
the trial in Berryville this weekend.

Also, do you know anyone in the Williamsburg area to give you estimates of
travel times? Sometimes, a place looks close but isn't really when traffic
and road conditions are factored in.

Thank you to everyone who expressed their sympathies and wrote such wonderful
remembrances of my old guy. No doubt every Beardie is special; Boone just seems
to have been a bit more unique than most!

Now he lives on in his Grandson "Bean" (same attitude :-) and
Great-Grandchildren.

Some day - on Heaven's Fell.......

Sharon,

Can this message be sent to the AHBA list? Thank you for your help.

Tashia

Hi everyone - I have a friend who is the director of the Minot, ND
Humane Society that has a wonderful Border Collie in need of a home.
She is already spayed. Here is the email from Karen. If someone
wants more information about Muggs, or knows of anyone who would
be
interested in adopting her please email Karen.

Hi Tasha here are some pictures of Muggs the border collie that I have
here at home. She was surrendered because of too many dogs on the
farm and her owners decided to keep one of her pups. She is
supposedly trained in herding with voice commands and hand signals
but
I highly doubt that. Why would someone give her up if she was that
trained? I've heard that she is good with cattle in a penned area but
doesn't do very well when they are out to pasture. Sounds like lack
of training to me butttttttt.....anyway I have spayed her and she is 2
yrs old. She is the grand-daughter of some great herding dog who was
on the David Letterman show herding sheep into a taxi cab. I do not
know how to track that though. I have had her at my house and she
really does great with EVERYONE! even my little 3 yr old. She does
seem to be a little dominant but so far no incidents with my dogs but
she did have a spat with my oldest cat and I do not know if it was
because earlier he wapped her in the face and she just decided to get
him back later or if it was a protective thing because he walked in
our bedroom and thats where her kennel was. She never makes a
peep in
her kennel and she loves to ride in the car (kenneled) and never had
any accidents in the house although I had her out often. She is good
around horses. She looked at one of my barn cats a little funny the
other day but as soon as I said "Leave it" she stopped focusing on
him. If there was any way I thought I could keep this dog I really,
really, really would but I don't want to put my cats in harms way
either. I have taken her to our training site a few times and she
has NO FEAR of any of the obstacles. She does the tunnel without
incident and even went through a full chute on her own when i was
getting equipment out. WoW!!! She does the A-frame at full height
without blinking and does the dog walk without blinking too. She
knows sit, and has a great recall. We are working on down and stay
which I think she has a clue but I haven't pushed them too hard yet.
She is also working on left and right too. She is having an
EXTREMELY
HARD time at the shelter right now and is not handling the kennel very
well. Excessive licking the walls and circling. I have contacted a
great lakes rescue as well and haven't talked with them on the phone
yet. Here are some pictures of her. Or visit our website at
www.svhspets.com and she is on our petfinder listing. If I could work
on the cat thing I would give her a try but I really don't want to
take a chance and pass up a great home with someone who can also
work
her in agility or herding. If you had ideas for me on the cat thing I
would take any advise and try it. She is somewhat treat motivated and
likes some squeaky toys but mainly works for praise. Thanks for any
help you think you can give me.

My club is planning a AHBA trial for May. We will be offering HTAD
Course #4. My question is can we have a gather on one day and a take
pen on the other?

Yes, that's fine -- just note it on the sanction form.
