Dear Shannon,

So sorry to hear about Floyd. I had told everyone I knew about his
firefighting skills. I will say a prayer for him tonight.

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal
dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow
Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they
can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and
our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and
old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made
whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and
times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing:
they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind. They all
run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks
into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to
quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass,
faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special
friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted
again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the
beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone
from your life, but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...

Perhaps you can try and squirt a little bit on a small plate of bowl. I
usually give my ferrets their Ferretone that way. I give them each a little
bowl and squirt a little in there. If your ferrets still "snort" it then
perhaps put it on their food. They like that too.

Hi, our Blanca had that when we brought her home from the pet shop.
About two weeks later, I took her to the vet and they also told me
the same thing, that she would eventually need surgery, however he
gave her an antibodic, and Pepto Bismo and PH and within a week she
was better. It has not happened again and she will be one year old
in February. Hope this is helpful.

Does anyone know why my Blanca not only goes in her litter, but also
in other corners? We use pine bedding on the bottom of her cage and
cat litter in her litter box. The majority of the time is in the
litter box. We have sprayed the corners but that does not seem to
work. Thanks boriqua

Hi, today I took our Blanca to the vet because she has been limping
on occassion from her right back leg. The vet took xrays and found a
dark spot on her bone. He said it could be a disease figment within
the bone but is unsure. He will be sending Blanca's blood work to
the lab to make sure that her liver and kidneys have not been
affected. The only way to find out for sure is to do a biospy which
will be very expensive.

When Blanca was about 10 weeks old her leg got caught in the cage and
she yelled out a scream, I checked her but she did not seem to be in
pain.

Has anyone experienced this with your ferret. Does it sound like it
might be serious? Any response will be greatly appreciated. I will
keep the testing up. Thanks boriqua

It is with great regret that I must give up my babies this weekend.
I've been fighting my allergic reaction to them for a long time, but
finally realized that they are the ones suffering the most. Because
of that reaction, they are not getting the love and attention that
they deserve so much. I will be giving them to the Ferrets R#1
shelter and rescue in Virginia. Anyone interested in adopting one or
more should contact that organization (their info is on the AFA
website). In the meantime, I wrote them a poem that I wanted to
share. Please give all your babies an extra snuggle tonight.

Today I say goodbye to a dear, dear friend.
He doesn't know the words,
He'll wait for my return.
He twitches his tail and turns away
The tears in my eyes, they burn.

My friend was family to me
I nursed and fed and bathed,
I played and trained and taught
I said goodbye to him today
And still those tears I fought.

I know I have to leave him, though it hurts to walk away.
May his newfound family love him.
May his new life be a ball!
I smile a little as I climb in the car,
And the tears, they finally fall.

I my self have severe allergies to all animals.

Sometimes I will get near a cat or horse or dog and I look like a cabbage patch kid in 10 minutes.  My eyes have swollen shut twice from being near a cat.

I have allergies to all my animals and had them really bad to the ferrets when I got them.
But I'm not going to torture them by giving them up. They are very emotional creatures.

It took me a few months to figure it out but it was their skin oils and mainly their waste that got to me.

Well I started them on Marshal Farms "Bi-Odor " and in three weeks there was a major improvement in my allergies.

I also started taking the Sun Source brand Allergy medicine again and there is even more improvement.
Plus Nettle Tea is great for allergies.

Take a look at my web site.  I am an Herbalist.  A lot of herbal info is there and if what you need to know is not, then use my email on the home page and ask.

The other thing is I do is bathe them only once a month unless they get into something and that cuts down on the skin oils they produce.

It still bothers me when I handle them and then rub my eyes but it is improving.

Hopefully you have not given them up yet and are willing to give this a shot.

Veronica,

I'm so sorry you had to do this. I can definitely relate ... I have severe
allergies to my ferrets too. My eyes swell up so much that it looks like I
just got into a brawl with someone. But, I can't give them up. I will
endure but I respect the decision you made to give them up. You are a good
owner to make sure they went to a shelter.

You are in my thoughts and prayers,

Sometimes they are just stubborn. Bounce has two corners out of the cage that she likes, we have tried everything and it does not stop her.

Yes , she is a ferret and it is instinctive for them to go in corners.
Training, patience is necessary.

When you clean up the no no corners make sure you get the sent out with a good cleaner.. Odo-Ban is a great product for that.  They have it at Sam's Club Stores... If the scent is still there, then to them it is still a potty.

Also try throwing cuddly stuff like blankets and towels in the no no areas and gradually pick them up until they know that the litter box is where to do it.. they usually will not potty on cuddlies.  Your place will look like slob central for a while but it works.  If they start using no no corners again then start the process over again to remind them but you usually only have to do this once.

Use more litter pans at least two corners in every room they are in.

Wood bedding and litters have aromatic oils in them which are unhealthy to most animals. especially when used for bedding (a constant exposure)

I reccommend not using any bedding other than blankets and such. Old T-shirts, etc.
I got several Fleece blankets for my ferrets and two small ferret beds that are all wool and fleece.
I used a pants leg off an old pair of jeans and split it and hung it with hooks for a hammok. They can't seem to destroy that.  hehe.

And ditch the cat litter and use Yesterdays News Brand Litter. Great stuff.  If you need to know more let me know.

Well, the pine bedding may be the problem - she could confuse this with
litter. Anyway, you shouldn't use it since wood chip bedding can cause
respiratory problems in ferrets. Use newspaper if you must line the cage.
(My cage has a plastic bottom; it's easier to clean if I don't line it.)

Mine only go outside the litterbox when they decide it is too dirty to use.
If it is too full they will push it out of the corner and go in the corner
where it was! They have me trained to put only a little litter in the box
and change it every day.

If you are not using a high-backed corner pan I recommend trying that. Also
my ferrets seem to prefer Yesterday's News or other recycled newspaper
litter; I tried a straw-based litter when I ran out and they refused to go
on it. They are more finicky than my cats; but I think if you try some
different things and go with whatever Blanca prefers she will start
consistently using the pan.

Best of luck!

--Lorelei

Thank you for the advice, but I handed them off this weekend. I had tried
everything, believe me, both herbal and prescription. Nothing helped much.
They deserve an owner who can spend the time with them that I can't. It was
unquestionably one of the most difficult days of my life, but their needs
had to come first. Keeping them would have been selfish of me. Happily the
organization they went to is wonderful. The people terrific, the shelter
clean, orderly and extremely well run. They are in good hands and given
their disposition, youth and good health, we all believe they will be
adopted into loving homes soon.

I am new with ferrets and wonder why people give their ferrets
ferretone? In one posting I was told that, that person gave their
ferrets some every night. And that it was a vitimin and made
their ferrets coat very nice. So I have been giving my little ferret
ferretone every night as a treat. Now I am being told not to because
it is a laxative. Any info would be a help. I feed Totally Ferret
along with a small amount of IAMS kitten food. Thank you

I am the moderator of this AFA Group. Ferretone is a product similar
to Linatone made for dogs and cats. It is an oily mixture of
essential oils and amino acids which are products that give Ferrets a
beautiful shiny coat and give other internal "plus" results.
However, if you are feeding a good ferret diet, it is really not
necessary. I use it only as a treat and ONLY when I am cutting
nails: I put a towel on my lap, put the ferret on his/her back with
their head to me and their feet towards my knees. Squirt a teaspoon
of Ferretone on their TUMMY (you may have to hold on to them the
first few times until they realize what is going on) and they become
so busy lapping and licking it up that you can go ahead and clip all
their nails and they pay no attention to what you are doing!!!!! A
teaspoonful allows me to do both back feet and another teaspoon
allows me to do the front feet and you're all done. I ONLY use it as
this kind of a treat as too much of it, say everyday, is very hard on
their liver. Better to use a box of "Bandits" as treats once a day
if you're going to give them once a day. Another good thing to do is
to take the box of Bandits or regular ferret treats while they are
all sleeping and rattle it like mad until you wake them all up - THEN
give them all a treat. This does a dual purpose. If one ever gets
loose, all you have to do is rattle or crinkle the bag/box LOUDLY and
they will come RUNNING back to you!

Secondly, LAXATONE IS a laxative to prevent hairballs. about 1/2
inch from the tube should be given once a week. As we all know,
ferrets are clean animals and constantly groom themselves and each
other and can get HUGE hairballs in their stomach, like cats, which
sometimes have to be surgically removed. Better to use a
preventative and save a lot of pain and money!!

In Addition to my previous response...

The ferret-lax, furo-tone and furo-vite are not for daily use unless the ferret really needs it or is recommended by your vet.
I give it to mine in much smaller amounts than the packages say (about 1/4 to 1/2 what it says) and not every day unless necessary.

I did however have to use the vite and tone on a daily basis when I first got my ferrets. When I rescued them they were malnourished and the whole enchilada. They were not in good shape at first. I hate it when someone does that to a critter.

Okay, I really need everyone's help now. I have five fuzzies. My
husband and I are going on temporary training assignments for our
jobs for 6 months. He's going to Oregon, I'm going to California. All
the ferrets need examinations, shots, etc. in order to fly, plus
there's the cost (and worry) of flying them to Oregon and back in 6
months. My husband has not quit nagging and complaining about the
cost of having the ferrets, and now it's a huge issue about the cost
of flying them. I really don't know what to do. I'm so tired of
hearing him complain about the ferrets that I'm just about ready to
find them another home- one where they won't be resented at all.
I know that's a crappy excuse for giving up my fuzzies, but I really
don't think I can take this anymore. I don't want to find them homes,
but I don't know what else to do. Has anyone been in the same
position, or can anyone offer some advice?

Ferrettone or the Marshal's brand Furo-Tone is a fatty acid and vitamin supplement for helping problems with a dull coat, excessive shedding and dry, flaky, itchy skin.  It is used when these fatty acids in the supplement are not present in the ferret's usual diet.  I personally use the Marshals brand when necessary.

I also use Marshal's Foro-Vite.  This is a vitamin supplement used as you would take a daily vitamin supplement.  Used mainly to help a ferret increase weight, improve appetite and to help them when they are sickly. This brand has all natural vitamins which are absorbed easier and are a better benefit to the ferret.

As for the Ferret-Lax, this is used primarily to help with hairballs and the prevention of hairballs especially during seasonal changes when a ferrets are shedding the previous seasons coat. This is when they are more susceptible to hairballs and blockages.

Ferret-Lax can also be used to help with potential blockages due to improper diet and on those occasions when they get into something they aren't supposed to and eat it. But in the case of eating something like plastic bags etc. it doesn't always guarantee success but can help greatly.

I also keep them on the Marshal's Select diet and mix in about 10% of 8-in-1 ultra diet and such.

If you have an odor problem with the ferrets' waste or body odor, I highly recommend Marshal's Bi-Odor supplement. This stuff really works to alleviate the undesirable piercing effect of the natural odors of a ferret and their waste.

I mix the Bi-Odor in with their food, just enough to wet it and move it around with a spoon to spread it out all over the food. Then I let it dry out over night and break it up so it doesn't turn into a solid brick of food when it is placed in their bowl or feeder.  (about six pumps per days food for two ferrets) I also add some to their water. (six pumps per 1 cup of water for two ferrets).  Splitting it between food and water seems to work a little better and it doesn't use as much.  This stuff is $13 for 8 oz in the stores on average, but at http://www.theferretstore.com/  it is 4 - 8 oz bottles for $30. Big difference.  It takes a few weeks for it to take effect, you will notice a difference even in their body odor. Also, once you start them on it, don't stop or you will have to start over.  Keep a good supply on hand if you use this one.

If you feel the need to, or your Vet has recommended any of these products, or if you just need ferret supplies and toys in general, check out this site...  http://www.theferretstore.com/  ....  this is one of the few sites you can actually save money with.  On average I save 20% to 25% compared to local stores and even more compared to other pet supply web sites.

Hope this information helps.

It may sound kind of corny, but some people open up savings accounts for
pets. Kind of like preparing for an emergency with children (I think they
should be considered like another child anyway), the house, or a spouse. That
way your hubby would know that you take his concerns seriously and that money
is set aside for future problems. Or, you could just get rid of the nagging
hubby! Hope this helps.

After reading your delima my morbid mind is in overdrive, but I will be as subtle as I can after reading this.

Three options.....

1.  You could slap him really hard and hope it creates some compassion for the fuzzies. But he might hit back and it probably won't help anyway.

2.  Kill him. But that will only get you in serious trouble.

3.  Get a new husband...one who loves animals and doesn't complain so much.

I can think of more but they are pretty ugly and will also more than likely get you in trouble, but could be effective.

Personally, if I was in a situation where my animals are disliked for any reason by my partner and I never heard the end of it, then I would just find another partner.

But that is just me.  I have moved on for less than that before.

Hi everyone! I just joined this list, but I have been on several others for
about the last year.
I've been married for 4 years & only had 1 fuzzy when I first met my hubby.
(Now its 5 but there are 6 ferrets here...)
He does complain quite a bit about them when he's in a bad mood... but when
he's in a good mood I will catch him playing with them. He doesn't ever
clean their
room or feed them. The only one that's 'his' is Snow- but I have made clear
that if anything happens with us, Snow aint going nowhere.
Mine have there own room (which helps keep him from complaining- a little)
& a tunnel that comes into the living room into a smaller cage with bedding.

I suggest you may want to look to your local ferret shelter for a
long-term boarding situation. I have done this quite a few times in the
past - anywhere from 3 - 9 months - and it's worked out wonderfully. The
fuzzies get to go home to the same mom & dad and the shelter makes a
little money with boarding donations.

If a local shelter is not possible, perhaps you can talk to a good friend
who has ferrets (or is at least an animal lover) to do this? I've had
people drive over 3 hours to get to me, so you may have to drive a bit.

Either way, I imagine it's going to cost you some amount of money, but the
boarding may be cheaper in the long run.

I, too, have no patience with the man who won't accept my pets. He knows
if he ever asked me to choose he would get pointed to the door <g>

Good luck!

Mary

Other people have covered the husband angle. I'd like to talk about
your ferrets. You are going to California. Ferrets are illegal
there. If you are caught with them, they may be killed. Besides,
it would be breaking the law. I'm foolish enough to believe that
citizens should obey laws, even if they don't like them. Your husband
is going to Oregon, but he doesn't like ferrets. Under the
circumstances, I'd say you need to find them a better home. If you're
lucky you could get an agreement to return them to you when you move
somewhere else. Where do you live now? Let's see if we can find some
contacts for you.

This is really a form of self-insurance. If you wish you could get
health insurance for your ferret, this is a good alternative. May
"premium" payments into a savings account every month. The money
will be there when you need it for adrenal surgery.
