“The water of Fukushima Nuclear Plant,
we are sorry to make you suffer.
Please forgive us.  We thank you, and we love you.”

Please say it aloud or in your mind. Repeat it three times as you put your hands together in a prayer position. Please offer your sincere prayer.

Please make this project every 12 hours (every day at 12 AM and 12 PM) until the situation calms down), even if it could take years, this is the best exercise for the people of the world to practice praying together for the healing of the world. We should do that every day from now on till the end of time. People should pray together for nature to forgive them or else we will be wiped out totally from the surface of the earth. Let's pray every day! Please Dr.Emoto, let's keep on this wonderful sacred ceremonial action.

Miwa,
Are you working with any group in Japan that you’d like to recommend so I can post to all the groups.  THIS IS JUST AMAZING!

Helping pets in post-disaster Japan

A loose network of groups is working to assist animals stressed by the ordeal and, in some cases, separated from their owners. Many find that animals' welfare is often integrally linked to that of people.

March 30, 2011

Reporting from Miyako, Japan—

The dog had been left tied up in a yard in Fukushima, the largely emptied city synonymous with the words "nuclear disaster."

Despite the threat of radiation leaking from the nuclear plant 40 miles away, Toby Weymiller, a teacher who got the distress call from the shelter Animal Friends Niigata, drove to the city and rescued the dog and a stranded cat.

Photos: Japan in crisis

"The dog was really freaked out," said Weymiller, who downplayed any danger to his own health. "But he's in the shelter and happy now."

More than two weeks after
Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami, a loose network of pet groups is working to provide many of the services for stranded and stressed animals that emergency services have been providing for people, including food, medicine and shelter.

Some question why scarce resources should be devoted to saving animals when gas shortages are endemic and human beings have so many needs. Their response: The welfare of animals and people are often integrally linked.

"Many people are very anxious, having lost their houses and most everything else," said Kazumasu Sasaki, a veterinarian who has been traveling to hard-hit communities around Sendai with donated pet food and animal medicine. "One way to take care of anxious people is to take care of their pets."

Some pet owners went to great lengths during the tsunami to save their animals. Ofunato resident Atsuko Oikawa was helping her mother-in-law into their car when the earthquake hit, and their two beloved miniature dachshunds ran off toward the port and the killer wave.

She found Carlos, but Ghosn — the two are named after Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn — couldn't be found despite frantic searching. As the wave approached, she reluctantly headed for the hills with her husband, but there was a hole in their hearts over the missing dog, she said.

A week later, however, in what she considers a near-miracle, they received word from the police that Ghosn had not only survived but was in good shape. He had been found far inland near a beach sign, and the Oikawas speculate that he may have ridden the wave in.

"Maybe he rode on it, a surfing dog, perhaps," said Oikawa's husband, Yuki. "We're so incredibly happy to get him back."

For the pet lovers in Japan who saved their animals, however, that was often just the first step.

The growing tension between pet owners and others in temporary shelters has forced some to keep surviving animals in their cars or tied up alone in the
cold, Sasaki said, compounding the animals' stress.

Historically in Japan, animals that didn't hunt, guard the house or kill pests were seen as a luxury in a society that for centuries produced barely enough to feed itself, animal specialists said.

Economic conditions have changed, however, and cats and small
dogs are increasingly common for companionship and even fashion accessories, with a booming market in designer dog clothing and even animal funerals.

Still, outside big cities, tradition still runs deep. "And the Tohoku area where the earthquake hit has more traditional views than elsewhere, particularly among older men," Sasaki said.

At Miyako's Yamaguchi Elementary School, a post-disaster shelter, Chizuru Nakaya, 19, and her family have retreated with their two hyperactive Yorkshire terriers to a narrow balcony, aware that their animals aren't appreciated by others.

Seconds before the earthquake hit, the family's younger dog, Lion, started shaking and his companion Lucky started barking, the waitress said. Although she can't be sure, she said, she suspects that they had some kind of premonition.

Amid the devastation a few days after the tsunami, volunteer rescue worker Maki Oshiro found a small brown dog wandering in the debris fields in Natori. The number of abandoned or homeless pets hasn't been huge so far, reflecting the deadly force of the tsunami, though animal lovers said they may still find more in still-isolated areas.

On Wednesday, Animal Friends Niigata helped rescue a corgi found on the roof of a house that had floated out to sea.

"He bites, but I'm sure that is because he's stressed out to the eyeballs," Isabella Gallaon-Aoki said. "It's possible the owner might turn up — and we'll wait before placing him with another family — although I doubt it."

Activists also worry about pets left behind when foreigners evacuate because of nuclear radiation risks.

"Our concern is that animals will be left uncared for in apartments," said Ashley Fruno, a Manila-based senior campaigner with
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Those whose pets have survived the disaster with them, however, said they've provided comfort.

"We can't tell you how happy we are that Ghosn is back," Atsuko Oikawa said. "He's part of our family and he's taught us a valuable lesson: Never, never give up."

Animal welfare: Japan's 'Katrina moment'?

March 22, 2011 | 7:41 am

The Humane Society of the United States is no stranger to the political stage. For example, the organization aggressively pushes state ballot measures on animal welfare and has called for a boycott of Canadian seafood until the fishing industry agrees to give up its annual seal hunt. But weighing in on natural disasters is a little different, especially if it's a natural disaster in a country that doesn't exactly embrace animal welfare on a large scale. And why weigh in at all when that country is struggling with a devastating human toll?

But Humane Society Chief Executive Wayne Pacelle managed to tread delicately on that ground onstage during the organization’s annual Genesis Awards gala Saturday night at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. He talked about the devastation in Japan, and something he had observed about the aftermath.

"Japan has a terrible animal welfare record," he said, noting its commercial whaling interests and disregard for dolphins. But the individual survivors are obviously connected to their pets, he said. "It provides a reminder of the bond between animals and people."

The Humane Society International -- the global arm of the group -- has already provided $170,000 for supplies and temporary shelters for animals in Japan. And the organization is helping Japanese animal welfare groups as well.

"Amidst the catastrophe there’s an opportunity to have a Katrina moment," Pacelle said after the awards show. For animal welfare advocates, Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans underscored the loyalty that went both ways between people and pets: Many residents clung to their pets, reluctantly evacuating without them or, in some cases, refusing to leave without them.

"I do think pet-keeping is on the rise in Japan," Pacelle said. "We want to nourish that." He details his organization’s efforts in Japan on his blog.

The Genesis Awards, which feature celebrity presenters handing out awards to films and TV shows, including news programs, that delve into animal issues, was taped to air on Animal Planet on April 30 and May 1.

Lost Victims: Animal Groups Rush to Help Pets in Japan

by Jennifer Welsh, LiveScience Staff Writer

Once the massive earthquake had hit his home in Sendai, Kamata-san ran to alert his neighbors of a possible tsunami, and his dog, Shane, escaped from his yard. Once the colossal flood had washed in, Kamata-san couldn't find Shane and thought the worst.

About six hours after the wall of water washed through his home, Kamata-san hears that a dog has shown up outside the shelter where he was staying. Miraculously Shane had found his way to the shelter and back to his owner. The Akita dog had scratches on its leg likely from clinging to debris as the water rose, so animal rescue workers gave him antibiotics. [Photos of Japan's Rescued Pets]

Some Japanese pets and pet owners are not as lucky as Kamata and Shane.

n the face of great human tragedies from the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan on March 11, there is one group of victims finally gaining notice: pets. In response, several rescue groups have jumped to aid these injured and abandoned four-legged survivors.

"We’re at the beginning stage of trying to find out how many animals are out there," David Wybenga, of Japan Cat Network, told LiveScience. "There are a lot of unknowns." This network, along with rescue groups Animal Friends Niigata and Arkbark, have formed a coalition called Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support (JEARS) focused on the animals left behind.

The coalition has been taking in stranded animals, coordinating the pickup of pets that had to be abandoned, and dropping off food and supplies at shelters and for anyone in need. Jennifer O'Donnel, the Japan Logistics Coordinator for World Vets, said in an email that she expects there will be at least 10,000 animals that end up in local shelters and rescue organizations, most of those being cats and dogs. (World Vets is a non-government organization that provides veterinary aid around the globe.)

The threat of radiation from the damaged nuclear power plants is also making the rescue difficult. The radiation could have health consequences for both the animals and humans. The teams have just started venturing into the radioactive zone to rescue the animals there.

Helpful humans

"The dynamic of every disaster is that the human-centered concerns dominate. The animal-related impacts emerge as a subsequent concern," said Bernard Unti, senior policy adviser for Humane Society International. The animal-centric worries are just starting to emerge, and it will be a long road to recovery, he said.

Several groups are touring the damaged areas and handing out supplies, including pet food, water, gasoline and medications, to pet owners. One such group, led by Isabella Gallaon-Aoki of Animal Friends Niigata, is also rescuing pets, those that might be roaming the streets or left behind by evacuated owners.

Many animals have been rescued or reunited with their owners, though in the worst-hit areas many are missing. "It’s a huge area to cover, and there are lots of little isolated communities," Gallaon-Aoki told LiveScience. "It's just so overwhelming."

The animals aren't allowed to stay in the human shelters that have been set up, so some pet owners are staying in their crumbling houses with their animals, which in the wake of continued aftershocks can be dangerous.

JEARS volunteers met up with this woman in Sendai, who had been living in her partially destroyed house because her dog wasn't allowed in the shelter.

Cat Island

The Animal Friends Niigata group is also working to help the animals and people left on "Cat Island" – a small island, officially called Tashirojima, with more cats than people. The island survived the tsunami with minimal loss of life after being hit with 20-foot-high (6 meters) waves, Yutaka Hama, of the island's Hama House Inn, said in an email to LiveScience.

Cat Island, known for having more cats than people, dealt with 20 foot high waves from the tsunami. Most residents and cats are fine, though they are in desprate need of supplies.
CREDIT: Hama House Inn

While most of the people and animals seem to be OK, there is difficulty in getting supplies to the island and the electricity and water are still off. Helicopters have dropped off human supplies, like gasoline and food, but the pet food situation is unknown. As soon as they can find a boat, Gallaon-Aoki and her team will bring food and water to the community.

"The people on the island are very protective of the cats, so taking them off the island isn't a choice," Gallaon-Aoki said. "We will offer support to give them supplies and help with the injured animals, but a mass evacuation isn't in the cards."

Sending support

Several groups, including the Humane Society International and World Vets, have pledged monetary support. The Humane Society International is shipping $120,000 worth of supplies and equipment to Japan, Unti told LiveScience. World Vets has also sent a veterinarian to Sendai to help the JEARS teams and Kazumasu Sasaki (a local vet living in one of the hardest-hit areas) administer medicines and care for injured pets.

Visit the JEARS' Facebook page, at www.facebook.com/AnimalRescueJapan, to learn more about their efforts and to donate to their cause. Monetary donations are preferred, though helping hands and homes are needed for rescued pets. "We need help at our shelter right now," said Japan Cat Network's Wybenga. "If they can't come to the shelter we need foster homes. We want to get animals out of the shelter and into homes."

JEARS shelters are no-kill, and will keep as many animals as they can for as long as needed. They are focused on finding homes for the animals. Government-run shelters do gas animals, but the rumors that they will be euthanizing lost pets are unfounded; they will hold on to the animals for as long as they can.

All of these organizations are taking donations, so check their websites for instructions.

Thanks livescience, for deleting posts and showing what your true agenda is. As stated before, the rumor about gassing happens to be true, you, livescience are talking about rescue groups stating they don't gas, but government-run kill-shelters can and do, and there was NO GOVERNMENT AUTHORITIVE who ever made the statement to Jears, it was a non-profit who made the statement. Just ask Nippon-SPCA, they know this, and are out there in the field helping animals and rescuing them from shelters because they know the kill-shelters are under no obligation to hold animals indefinately. Try getting the facts before you keep propagating this information, which seems to be the trend whenever animals in Japan are featured in the news. FACTS please!! Jears has stated hundreds of times the rumour is not true, yet half the other rescue groups know it to be true. Try asking them.

Dear friends of fur bearing animals,

UPDATE!   UPDATE!   UPDATE!

We have great news to share with you!

Our first conference is being blessed by a most generous anti-fur "philanthropist" who has made a sizable donation to the AFS Conference. The intent is to enable more people to participate, and to support our efforts to become a powerful voice for fur bearing animals.  We are most grateful and will surely work harder to make this dream come true. As a result, the great news that we are now able to share with you is:

Free Registration: There will be NO registration fee!  And, you will pay just $40 for the Vegan/Awards Reception--if you wish to attend. But of course, you won't want to miss it!  We're planning a wonderful awards reception, with entertainment and presentations by our distinguished guests, and plenty of vegan food. A cash bar will also be available.

Exhibitors fee is now only $150 and it will include one ticket to the reception. Sponsors space is no longer available.

As an exhibitor at the AFS Conference you will have ample exposure to like-minded animal advocates who will be there to be inspired by the information and exhibits available!  With free registration we expect to attract students from the many local universities as well as guest speakers and participants from all over the country and abroad.

SOME CHANGES IN OUR SCHEDULE:
The vegan dinner cruise has been taken off the schedule for this year because we needed to dedicate all our time and efforts to developing a great program. And we have! This two-day conference will be packed with 22 fabulous speakers, breakthrough films and panel discussions. But this doesn't mean you can't go on a cruise of your choice.  If you plan to arrive on Friday, June 24th, there are two good cruise lines with boats docked near the hotel: The Dandy & Cherry Blossom where you can purchase your ticket. Click here for information

On Saturday evening, in lieu of the cruise, there will be a vegan awards reception with entertainment, at the cozy Sheraton Suites Hotel, where the Conference is being held.  The cost is $40.00 and must be purchased at the time of registration.

What Old Town has to offer: It is a charming town with plenty of cafes, boutiques and small restaurants. In the dock area, is where the Torpedo Factory arts gallery resides as well as restaurants and other shops. You may have time to enjoy Old Town at your discretion, but please don’t forget to get back to the Conference!  We have a full schedule of important animal advocacy issues, as well as those concerning fur bearing animals, that will be discussed – Don’t miss it!

    More States Create Anti-Whistleblower Bills
    Submitted by Lois Rain on April 14, 2011 – 2:15 pm6 Comments

    48Share
    Here
we go again! If you thought the recent legislation to criminalize those
who film or photograph farm activity in states like Florida and Iowa is
coincidental, it’s not. Similar bills are in process in Idaho and
Minnesota, and other states are considering legislative action as well.
Giant corporations like Monsanto are throwing money behind the Iowa version and possibly more in order further secure their “crop operations.â€
Minnesota is at least the fourth state to introduce
anti-whistleblower legislation. They got it from Iowa who got it from
Florida. In the Minnesota bill, even just possessing undercover
documentation of farm operations would be illegal. How they can enforce a
law like that without invading people’s privacy, I do not know. These
bills threaten to punish anyone who dares to highlight questionable
behavior towards animals, seed and produce, sanitation and employees.
“We think it would be an important deterrent tool in our toolbox
against trespassers,†says Daryn McBeth, president of the Minnesota
    Agri-Growth Council.
People, there are already strict trespassing and theft laws. Big Ag
has all the legal recourse needed to sue or punish those who obtain
footage of their operations, so why don’t they? Can you imagine dragging
an activist into court and saying to the judge, “Look, he found out we
were throwing live chickens into a grinder and put it on the internet.
This violates my intellectual property rights!†No, their solution to
the bad PR is slapping the whistleblowers with a major felony and
throwing them in a cage with rapists, murders, and armed robbers. So
they make the act of discovery into a crime to preclude such discoveries
instead of accounting for their crimes, which, by the way, they believe
to be perfectly acceptable industry standards.
Since when is crying foul on criminal behavior like animal abuse and
breaking regulations considered a crime? Any law that imprisons you by
superceding your constitutional rights is null and void. But that isn’t
going to touch Mr. Policeman when you explain as he hauls you away. Laws
are laws, intentions are irrelevant to a judge. That’s what makes them
so dangerous to your rights. You may think it only applies to those
overzealous “tree hugger†types, but no, it means you too!
Ironically, citizens are considered heroic when they turn in their
neighbor or call in an anonymous tip to stop criminal behavior and
abuse. Yes, even animal abuse! But boy, if you actually gather
substantial evidence in a Big Ag operation and show the public when
officials won’t listen – you go to prison for a long, long time.
These bills remove the pea from the whistle should you witness
something vile, whereas before you at least had the recourse of sharing
with others. This encourages more abominable behavior; with more cover
up, such actions are sanctioned, and the perpetrators can rest easy
knowing the whistleblowers are silenced in prison.
When USDA backed Big Ag operations are in violation of current
standards, how do we know? Who cares – the USDA? Whistleblowers are
often the only window for the public, and when embarrassing information
is released, it often leads to raised standards. On a smaller scale, it
works with the restaurant industry. Get an embarrassing (public) write
up about cockroach infestations and suddenly the kitchen is overhauled,
no expense is spared, and sanitation thrives in order to reassure those
paying customers who like a fresh clean salad, hold the mouse poop.
When these bills first arrived on the scene there was a lot of
backlash, but our concern is that with more and more cropping up and
some scaling back punishment, they will be more readily accepted by the
public. Some reporters called the scale backs, “more reasonable.†Why?
First amendment rights are still going in the grinder, citizens will
    still go to prison.
The running theme here is force, force, force even if it’s currently
undetectable. Forceful legislation from senators, funds from Big Ag and
Monsanto to strengthen the force, the force of multiple states following
suit, force from the ensuing law enforcement – force of slamming the
door on the face of public scrutiny.
It’s going to be increasingly difficult to catch these viral bills,
inform others, and take action when they keep rearing their ugly heads
like a nationwide game of whack-a-mole. But with such replicated force,
much like a virus, you can see it is more important than ever to do
    something.

One state after another, just as our first amendment rights are flashed down the toilet.

My question is:  Where are the rich organizations that claim to be protecting these animals?

We hope that this marks the beginning of the end to the fur industry. As more and more people become aware to the horror and injustice that is the fur industry, it is only a matter of time before the industry crumbles, and the cages are smashed to pieces while the animals run free!

All information about this recent decision is being taken from Norwegian news sites, so they are in Norwegian, not english. Here are some translated quotes from todays vote.

“Today was the Labour Party’s national convention in a controlled liquidation of the fur industry. The decision is a major victory in efforts to fur animal freedom. This could mean the beginning of the end for the Norwegian fur farming.

Both political parties, various professional bodies and all animal protection organizations support the requirement for a phasing out of the Norwegian fur farms. Now begins the final stage in the struggle to abolish Norwegian fur farms for good.

The work brings results after the Network for Animal Freedom has revealed animal abuse at Norwegian fur farms for three consecutive years, the debate on fur farms have become an important political issue. Today’s victory also reflects how much enthusiasm for fur animals has become.

Today’s decision of the Labour Party shows that all the activists’ tireless efforts produce results. Work for fur animals’ freedom has yielded results, and the fur industry’s propaganda will no longer dominate.”

“Labor is committed to lay down their fur farming in Norway. It was decided at the party’s national convention Sunday.

A majority of the editorial committee had little faith that fur farming should be conducted in accordance with current requirements for ethical animal husbandry. The proposed controlled liquidation of the about 300 fur farms in operation in Norway today.

As a replacement to those few reorganization to establish new agricultural activities.

Animal Welfare Alliance is celebrating the decision.

- Labor Party has said no animal cruelty, and yes to the voters, “said information officer Live Kleveland Welfare Alliance in a press release Sunday.

At the party congress today voted 125 of 295 delegates to maintain fur farming. The majority of 175 delegates voted to abolish the industry.

- This is a historic victory, because it is the first time Labor takes a stand in favor of animal protection at a national convention. Now we work for the fur farming is finally liquidated in 2013, continues Kleveland in Animal Welfare Alliance.

There was a strong reaction after the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation in late October last year revealed widespread abuse of animals in the fur industry. NRK showed pictures of animals with avbitte bones, tails and ears and animals with bite injuries.

Animal Norway and the Network for Animal Freedom visited in the last 40 fur farms from Agder in the south of Nordland in the north.

The result was thousands of pictures and several hours of video documentation of mink and fox with serious injuries and illnesses. (Warning about strong images in the link above).

Fur industry is disappointed

Norway Pelsdyralslag are disappointed the Labour Party’s decision to go for liquidation of fur industry. – But it is not the hook on the door, “said Chairman Bertran Trane Skadsem.

- Immediately I will say that this is a sad day for the fur industry and for Norwegian agriculture. That said, there is also a very unsettled situation, “Skadsem NTB.”

I’ve always believed that animal abuse rejection should start within China, thus the reason I’ve always attached so much importance to helping them.  When the Washington Post publishes something like this, it’s because it’s reaching great proportion.  The groups I work with in China are involved in this rescue, the same as they did in the past to save cats – way more than 6,000 of them thus far.

What’s more beautiful about it is that I asked one of the people involved what they  needed, and they said—Chinese animal rights activists are taking care of EVERYTHING.  No donations are needed at this time.  This is a far cry from what I saw years ago when I started working with them.

GOD BLESS THOSE PEOPLE.

CHINESE ANIMAL GROUPS MAKING HISTORY FOR PAWS IN CHINA!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNIY IN BEIJING, CHINA
Dear Friends of Chinese animals,

Trucks full of dogs and cats destined for restaurant cooking pots and other unfortunate destinations are a common sight in China. AND it has been so for as long as anyone can remember.  However, thanks to so many compassionate Chinese citizens that are coming together and making sacrifices to help save and protect the most vulnerable member of their society, the animals, changes for the better are happening in China. Groups mushrooning everywhere are coming together fast enough to bring our hopes up that one day all this will belong in a museum of horrors. Our site www.people4chineseanimals.org names just a few of such groups and the incredible number of animals they've rescued in a short period of time.

The group that took in the 520 dogs is CSAPA (China Small Animals Protection Agency) which already has several hundreds of cats and dogs. This animal organization, the first of its kind in China, is run by Professor Lu Di who is in her 80's and still working some 10 to 15 hours daily to take care of those animals.  You'll want to see the video on this amazing woman:

GREAT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY IN BEIJING:

"This message is on behalf of professor Lu. Since CSAPA took all those dogs, she is in urgent need of experienced administrators to help her handle various issues (acquire fund already donated, shelter management, coordination with animalhospital/clinics, volunteers, various agencies, etc.   If you want to consider it, please contact professor Lu directly at (10)88553597"

PRINCIPALS ONLY PLEASE!

Be a part of this amazing group of compassionate people and help make history for animals in China!  Remember one thing:  Your experience on handling cats and dogs in shelters and related issues, will be an asset more valuable than what you can imagine.  Chinese animal groups are facing incredible challenges in rescuing animals since this is all new to most.  Your help is immensely appreciated.

NOTE:  If you would like to keep up-to-date on Chinese animal groups in China, join us on Yahoo:  http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/People4ChineseAnimals/

While I have your attention, if you would like to help me with our outreach program, that would be very much welcome.

Warm regards,

Rosa Close

As a result of the news alert I sent out, I am getting an amazing good feedback and support, including an American former journalist who lives in Beijing willing to volunteer to Prof. Lu Di.
Prof. Lu Di is on her 80’s and is not in good health, she needs help.

MORE GOOD NEWS:

Two Chinese activists from Beijing will be coming to our conference, together with Joy Gao who lives in NZ.  Joy is the most dedicated and generous activist helping animal groups in China.  Her contribution to all Chinese groups she knows in China is something that will be added to this incredible AR history.  One of the activists will exhibit her work and both will speak.  Check their banner on www.afsconference.org  I hope at least some of you will be able to welcome these two far away special guests.   Sign up now!

China's growing animal activism

This animal organization, the first of its kind in China, is run by Professor Lu Di who is in her 80's and still working some 10 to 15 hours daily to take care of those animals. The group just took in the 520 dogs in an amazing rescue mission where Chinese police were persuaded to help retrieve stolen pets from the restaurant trade. United we stand!

To all officials of animal protection associations:

Dear friends, as you know, the situation is very serious. The cruel
defenders of bullfights have managed to obtain what, for us, has always been
the unthinkable: bullfight is officially considered as part of French
immaterial culture. This is the first step to international recognition by
the UNESCO. If we let this happen, it will be a real catastrophe.

We would like to show a united front by organizing all together a big
demonstration on Saturday the 28th of May near the Ministry of Culture in
Paris, place du Palais royal at 3. PM. We want to show with slogans,
T-shirts, signs, etc. that all abolitionist associations, small or big, are
unified. We will ask you to show your agreement by creating an Internet site
specially dedicated to this demonstration, with a members counter. On this
coming site, the situation will be explained and logos of all associations
will be showed next to each other.

Thank you for sending us your logo with your answer if you wish to
participate

Law enforcement exposed offering to pay informants in Florida

There were two reports this week of the FBI / police in Florida seeking informants to provide intelligence on the local animal rights movement.

In the first instance, a woman in West Palm Beach who is active in dog rescue was visited at home by an FBI agent. They told her anti-vivisection activists are “crossing the line,†becoming “dangerous†and will “hurt someone.† The agent told her, “You have access that I don’t have.†She was told that she would be “rewarded†for any information she provided The agent also offered to take her to lunch. She told the agent she wasn’t interested. Before leaving, the agent warned her not to associate with animal rights activists.

Earlier in April,  an activist who does web design for a living was contacted by a “fitness trainer†looking for help creating a website. The activist met the woman at a cafe and they spoke for an hour about the project. The “trainer†supplemented her story with photos of her working out, etc.  During a second meeting, out of the blue, the woman mentioned that her boyfriend was friends with someone who works for the FBI, and that the FBI would “pay really well†for information about local animal rights activists. She claimed to be concerned that activists “could get violent.†The activist quickly ended the conversation.

It is important to raise awareness when the FBI starts making the rounds. The best defense is always silence, and stories like this should provide a prompt for activists to remind themselves why it is never ok to talk to the police. If you have not already, please read If An Agent Knocks.

If you have been visited by the FBI, please call the NLG’s Green Scare hotline: 888-NLG-ECOLAW.

Andres San Diego moves to number three on the FBI’s “Most Wanted Terrorists†list

With the (alleged) death of Bin Laden, the FBI has reordered its “Most Wanted Terrorists†list, moving animal liberation fugitive Andres San Diego to number three.

Andreas San Diego "most wanted terrorist"

San Diego was indicted in 2004 for the bombings of two targets related to the campaign against Huntington Life Sciences: Chiron (Emeryville, CA) and Shaklee (Pleasonton, CA). He was last seen in 2003, after he evaded an FBI surveillance tail in downtown San Francisco.

Andreas San Diego first became a suspect immediately after the Shaklee bombing, when he was pulled over for a minor traffic violation less than a mile from the site of the explosion. He has been a fugitive for nearly eight years.

Adding San Diego to the “most wanted terrorists†list is among the more bold moves by the federal government as it works to sell the public on animal rights activists and the A.L.F. as “terroristsâ€. This despite a 30+ year history of activity in which no humans have been harmed. The bombing Andreas are accused of took place at unoccupied office buildings, and no one was injured.

The FBI’s wanted poster has this to say about Andreas San Diego:

“Daniel Andreas San Diego is wanted for his alleged involvement in the bombing of two office buildings in the San Francisco, California, area. On August 28, 2003, two bombs exploded approximately one hour apart at the Chiron Corporation in Emeryville. Then, on September 26, 2003, one bomb strapped with nails exploded at the Shaklee Corporation in Pleasanton. San Diego was indicted in the United States District Court, Northern District of California, in July of 2004.â€

Followed, of course, by “SHOULD BE CONSIDERED ARMED AND DANGEROUS†(my wanted poster contained the same notation, despite my never having possessed, held, or even seen, a gun).

It is impossible to know where Andres San Diego is hiding, but please ask yourself what you would do if he showed up at your door tonight, asking for help. San Diego faces a potential life sentence if arrested, and is out there somewhere right now literally running for his life.

What you may not know about Zoli is that he is a fierce animal rights activist, has his own rescue group and represents Sea Shepherd. He will be exhibiting at our conference: PELICAN RESCUE TEAM. We are not equipped to have a band at our conference, so we're trying to convince Zoli to sing solo for us. Regardless you will have a chance to meet him and check for yourself what a great guy he is!

    SCHEDULE:
Please note some exciting changes to our schedule to include a lecture by Joshua Katcher, a fashion journalist in NY whose blog "The Discerning Brute" is very well known. His lecture will be focused on fashion v. animals. Thus the title: Fashion & Animals: Decoding and Harnessing the Dialect of Fashion Culture to Help Animals. click here You do not want to miss it!

MEET BORN FREE-USA ANIMAL DEFENDERS INT'L
It is our pleasure to welcome BORN FREE, USA represented by Tracy Coppola as a speaker and exhibitor.  Not only that, Tracy will be leading our main panel on "Fur Bearing Animals," which we are striving to make a very informative panel as well as extremely productive, envisioning effective future actions.  BORN FREE  has been a strong voice for wild animals, and among its achievements, a recent undercover investigation on trapping is of utmost importance for the anti-fur activism movement.

ADI "Animal Defenders International" and its new director, Matt Rossell will be a speaker and exhibitor. ADI has many accomplishments and contributed immensely to exposing Scandinavian fur farms as their undercover investigation has brought about actions that are helping phase out the fur farms system in Norway. Conversely, AFS also helped with the Norwegian campaign (writing & demo at the embassy in DC).  Briefly about Matt Rossell.  He worked for 6 months in a US fur farm while doing undercover investigation, and gathered groundbreaking footages that were used by PETA's fur farm videos. Come, meet the man who's done so much for fur bearing animals worldwide.
MEET CHINESE ANIMAL GROUPS FROM BEIJING!!!
Meet animal rights activists straight from China!  We will have 3 very caring animal activists from Beijing/China who will bring us an up-to-date on the current progress of animal caring actions in China.  As we all know, China does not have any laws to protect animals, but a growing number of compassionate citizens are working extremely hard to change that.  We are very optmistic that they will, in the near future, remove China from the list of cruelest countries to animals.  For those who have been wondering about who these wonderful people are, come to our conference and meet them personally.  See their credentials on this page: AFS SPEAKERS
    PEOPLE FOR CHINESE ANIMALS
HORSE ACTIVISTS, RISE UP TO THE OCCASION ! ! !
Dear horse people!  Our horses need you more than you can possibly imagine. Horse killers are out there fast and furious, we have no time to waste. Unconstitutional laws are being passed such as the ones in Florida, Idaho and Minnesota that will prevent us from investigating or even taking photos from a distance.  Florida has now illegal horse slaughterhouses, with this law no one will be allowed to report.  Over 100,000 US horses are shipped to Mexico's San Barnabe and Canada to be brutality killed. The brutaliy in San Barnabe is one that makes a mockery out of human beings.  Learn about this and the destruction of our wild horses happening right now so as to make room for cattle grazing.

                                      GET INVOLVED!

SAVE THE DATE: MONDAY, JUNE 27TH (Time TBA)

We'll gather in front of the Mexican Embassy in DC to stage a huge protest. The first was held over 3 years ago by the Anti-Fur Society when we managed to get politicians in Mexico to meet with local animal rights groups, something they had never done before. But due to lack of resources, we could not keep up the pressure.  Now we'll be joining forces with horse groups to resume these activities. We will be carpooling from the Sheraton Suites Hotel to downtown DC.  Don't miss it!  More details coming up soon. Check our horse panel:
    LAST, BUT NOT LEAST!
PLANT-BASED FOOD & FARMED ANIMALS ACTIVISTS, You have not been forgotten AT ALL!   You will have the best team at this conference:  Jenny Brown of Woodstock Sanctuary and Erica Meier of Compassion Over Killling Compassion Over Killing--on the very same panel.  Don't miss this opportunity to meet two people you so respect and admire!

    "KNOW YOUR RIGHTS"
In view of many laws that are being passed each one removing some of our constitutional rights, not to mention AETA that has been in effect for years, Odette Wilkens, a civil rights lawyer from New York, is kindly joining us to help us understand what our rights are and what we can do to protect them.  The very survival of our movement depends on our freedom of speech which is being greatly compromised.  Do not miss this important lecture!

Parliament approves new textile labelling rules for fur and leather

    Industry − 11-05-2011 - 13:32

    Plenary sessions

Goods containing fur, leather must be clearly labelled

Consumers will no longer risk inadvertently buying textiles that contain real fur or leather, thanks to new textile labelling rules approved by Parliament on Wednesday. The new rules should also ensure that new fibres and innovative products reach the market faster. The Commission will be asked for an assessment report, by 2013, on a possible origin labelling scheme, which may be accompanied by a legislative proposal.

On Wednesday MEPs approved, by a show of hands, a second-reading agreement struck by Parliament and the Council just before Easter on a new regulation on textile labelling. Parliament's negotiators, led by Dutch MEP Toine Manders (ALDE), won concessions from Member States on mandatory labelling of fur and leather parts and a feasibility study on origin labelling.

Fur and leather must be mentioned

Any use of animal-derived materials will have to be clearly stated on textile product labels. Fur is often used to trim relatively inexpensive garments and it is often hard for consumers to distinguish between real fur and good quality fake fur. Parliament has ensured that textiles containing such products must be labelled "contains non-textile parts of animal origin" to enable consumers to identify them. Allergy sufferers, for whom fur is a potential health hazard, will be among the beneficiaries.

The Commission is also asked to carry out a study, by 30 September 2013, on hazardous substances to assess whether there is a causal link between allergic reactions and chemical substances (e.g. colourings, biocides or nanoparticles), used in textile products.

    "Made in" labels

Parliament had sought to make origin labelling mandatory for textile products imported from third countries. This proposal proved very controversial for some Member States. Although Parliament pushed throughout the negotiations for this requirement to be included, the Council did not agree.

However, the Council did agree to ask the Commission to present a study, also by 30 September 2013, on the feasibility of an origin labelling scheme to give consumers "accurate information on the country of origin and additional information ensuring full traceability of textile products".  This assessment report may be accompanied by a legislative proposal.

Possible new labelling requirements and new technologies

The Commission's report should also assess the feasibility of harmonising care labelling requirements (currently voluntary), an EU-wide uniform size labelling system for clothes and the indication of allergenic substances.

Parliament also stresses the need to assess how new technologies, such as micro-chips or radio-frequency identification (RFID), could in future be used instead of traditional labels to convey information to consumers.

    Exemption for self-employed tailors

The new regulation also provides for an exemption from mandatory labelling requirements for customised textile products made up by self-employed tailors.

    Next steps

After today's approval by Parliament, the new textile labelling rules on textile labelling must still be formally signed by the Member States. The new regulation will enter into force 20 days after its publication in the EU Official Journal. However, for the new labelling requirements, such as the rules on labelling of fur parts, there will be a 2 ½ year transition period to allow the industry time to adapt.

    Procedure: Co-decision, 2nd reading, regulation
