I almost NEVER forward political mail, but this one is too important.
We hired Obama for many reasons. One of those was to stop this idiotic
war that Bush started. He needs to remember that and do the right
thing now. Please let him know that this is crucial...in your own
words...now. Thanks, friends, Fran

Hey there,

You've probably heard that President Obama is about to decide whether
to send a lot more troops to Afghanistan.

There are a ton of reasons this would be a mistake: Hundreds more
troops will be killed along with countless civilians. And we could get
stuck in an Iraq-style quagmire for decades, while terrorism experts
say this isn't even a good way to fight Al Qaeda.

But, here's one reason you might NOT have heard: The war will bankrupt
our economy and divert funds we urgently need for health care,
education and jobs.

Afghanistan is just about the most remote, difficult-to-access part of
the world there is. Sending a gallon of gas there costs $400; keeping
a soldier armed, fed and cared for costs almost $1 million a year!

I just told President Obama that with the economy in shambles, we just
can't afford any more war. Can you do the same thing?

Hello Everybody,

I agree with Christopher, that any political and in addition any religious email
and speech should not be allowed on this list or in our meetings. I think this
association has done an outstanding job in promoting our mission of beekeeping.
Let's keep the focus where is belongs. As with any family is clear we do not
all agree on wide range of topics but, let us all come together under the banner
of beekeeping! Please think twice before hitting the sent button as your valid
opinions may reflect negatively on the sender and the association.

See everyone on Tuesday.

Joe Hawkins

Sorry folks. The political email was sent to friends and was not meant to go to our beekeepers group. When I hit the "A" to send to a friend I did not see that it also sent to our ABA. I know that we all feel strongly about this important issue, but I know that it does not belong on our beekeepers email list. Fran

Kinda neat!

Bees Always Have a Safe Landing

Find out why bees never crash land, and how their technique could help engineers to design new aircraft.

By Emily Sohn | Wed Dec 23, 2009 12:16 AM ET

Whether landing on a picnic table, underneath a flower petal, or on a wall of a hive, bees always manage to touch down without crashing or tumbling.

Now, for the first time, scientists have figured out how these insects maneuver themselves onto all sorts of surfaces, from right side up to upside-down.

The bees' technique, which depends mostly on eyesight, may help engineers design a new generation of automated aircraft that would be undetectable to radar or sonar systems and would make perfectly gentle landings, even in outer space.

"This is something an engineer would not think of while sitting in an armchair and thinking about how to land an aircraft," said Mandyam Srinivasan, a neuroscientist at the Queensland Brain Institute at the University of Queensland and the Australian Research Council's Vision Centre in Brisbane. "This is something we wouldn't have thought of if we hadn't watched bees do their landings."

When bees approach an object, according to previous work, they steadily slow down to a stop by adjusting their speed as the size of their target steadily looks larger. Srinivasan wanted to know what happens after that.

Along with colleagues, he set up a platform that could be adjusted to any angle from horizontal to vertical and even upside-down.

Using sugar water, the scientists trained honeybees to fly to the platform again and again. Then, the researchers turned on the high-speed camera.

Their footage showed that no matter how flat or steep the surface, bees slow to a hover at 13 millimeters (about half an inch) away from wherever they're going to land. That suggests, Srinivasan said, that the insects are somehow using their eyes to measure that specific distance.

"We don't know how they're doing it," he said, "But they're doing it."

If their landing surface was flat, the researchers report today in the Journal of Experimental Biology that bees simply touched down back legs first.

If the platform was anywhere between vertical and upside-down, on the other hand, the insects made contact with their antennae first, by pointing them almost perpendicular to the platform. Then, the bees hauled their front legs up and finished with a flip-like maneuver to get their mid-legs and rear legs onto the surface.

It's a graceful and acrobatic motion that would be well suited to aircraft design, Srinivasan said. Current landing systems use radiation-emitting systems, which are detectable and often undesirable for military applications.

Existing technologies, the bee work suggests, may also be more complicated than they need to be.

"It's a beautiful way of landing using biological autopilot," he said of the bees. "We would like to make spacecraft that do smooth, flawless dockings. Whatever bees are doing must be computationally simpler than what we are doing now."

A honeybee's brain is the size of a sesame seed and weighs about a milligram. Yet, bees and other insects manage to perform complicated tasks, including smooth upside-down landings.

Figuring out the rules that simple animals use to translate vision into motion, Douglas Altshuler, a biologist at the University of California, Riverside, said, could help engineers design machines that mimic nature in unexpected ways.

"(A machine) doesn't have to look like an animal to use the rules that animals use," he added. "It's trying to recreate the brain instead of recreating the wings."

Ms. Hutson,  I was not looking at going to Tallahassee as two COMMERCIAL beekeepers but going for the good of all beekeepers, small and large, trying to make it easier for everyone.  But when I go anyone who wants to join us is welcome.  I don't look at it as commercial beekeeper vs. small beekeepers, I look at all of us as beekeepers. I think we are all equal not one greater than the other.

Thanks

I find it very interesting that two COMMERCIAL beekeepers are meeting with Dr. Brown at the end of the month.  I don't see how commercial beekeepers can adquately represent the sideliner.  Have they considered asking some of the Bottling Committee beekeepers to attend as well?  They are all located in Tallahassee and most are experienced in state government procedures and processes.  My suggestion:  Bob Livingston and Tony Hogg.

My two cents as a Life member of the FSBA.

Dear Subscribers,

Dear Subscribers,

Minutes of the Florida State Beekeepers Association, Board of Managers, Conference Call, Tuesday, January 5, 2010.

Attending:

Tommy Duggar, President
Malcolm Sanford, Executive Secretary
Brendhan Horne, Palm Beach Beekeepers
Wayne Chappie McChesney, Alachua County Beekeepers
Gary Ranker, Tampa Bay Beekeepers and Suncoast Beekeepers
Peaches, North Escambia Beekeepers
Tony Hogg, Apalachee Beekeepers
Ron Weisburg, South West Beekeepers
Beth Fox, Orange Blossom Beekeepers
Calvin Wilcox, Northeast Florida Honey Bee Assn.
Bert Kelley, Treasurer (Ridge Beekeepers)
Bill Dunn
Karen Wassmer

Meeting called to order 7:01 p.m by President Tommy Duggar

President Duggar reported that he and Bill Merritt of the Honey Bee Technical Council were going to meet with Dr. Joann Brown of FDACS food safety at the end of January to determine how small beekeepers might be able to bottle honey with a minimum of restrictions.

Discussion of the FSBA booth at the ABF Trade Show: This was e-mailed to Chris Stalder in a message to all the recipients as a result of this call:

Chris,

We had a conference call this evening concerning the ABF booth. Right now, most folks are planning to arrive the afternoon of the 12th, which should be plenty of time for the setup; you said the tradeshow is scheduled as follows: Your cell phone during the event is a good contact as listed below

# 407-325-9967

Tradeshow hours

Wednesday Jan. 13th: from 12 noon until 6 pm

Thursday Jan. 14th: from 8 am until 6 pm

Friday Jan. 15th: from 8 am until 6 pm

Saturday Jan 16th: from 8 am until noon

Here's what I know from the call:

I will be bringing 2,000 brochures to distribute about the state beekeepers association and flyers for the S.E. Organic Beekeepers meet in Palm Beach.
I will also be bringing receipt books to sign up members of the state association; I will check with Bert on this to ensure this is part of the plan and folks manning the booth will be trained on how to fill out the forms.
Chappie McChesney will be bringing brochures from Farm Bureau, bee inspection, and Dr. Ellis Lab to pass out and the mascot costume he has (he will be looking for right sized volunteers to wear it at the meeting)
David Webb has bottled honey to sell--he was not on the call, but it is thought he will bring the honey ready to sell and labeled.
Bert Kelley will get with David Webb to determine that there's change and a way to account for sales; the selling prices are in denominations of $5 only; Bert will also bring some shirts and hats to sell; folks manning the booth also need to be trained in selling these items.
Tommy Duggar will be bringing a table cloth and banner to dress up the display.
It was stated that tables and chairs are being provided as part of the booth, but this has not been finalized - We need to check with Tara Zeravsky on this;

She is in fact copied on this message as are others mentioned so you might maintain contact with them and they can contact you.

You mentioned in your message that Bo Sterk will perhaps set up a presentation on Haiti, but he was not on the call. I hope this helps and see you in Orlando.

Malcolm.

This was in response to Mr. Stalder's message some time ago

:Seasons Greetings Malcolm, David & Beth,

Before Christmas Shawn Boltz of the Orange Blossom Beekeepers

Association (OBBA) kindly gave me plenty of notice that he would be
unable to volunteer at the FSBA booth for the time slot Thurs. January
14th from 8 am until 1 pm. Shawn decided to register for the whole
North American Beekeeping Conference & will be busy taking in all the
  seminars & lectures, etc.

Bo Sterk, FSBA member from St. Augustine # 904-824-1441 called me today
after speaking with you, Malcolm (thanks for the referral) and
volunteered to replace Shawn for the time slot on Thurs. January 14th
from 8 am until 1 pm. Bo says that he has some photo displays from his
volunteer work in Haiti that show the log hives they are utilizing
  until
he gets them switched over to the more manageable removable top bar
style hives. He plans to show his pictures from Haiti at the FSBA booth
while he is volunteering. He is also hoping to do a presentation about
his volunteer work later that day during one of the sessions for the
  conference.

I am still waiting to hear from someone about setting up & tearing down
the FSBA booth...I would like to know who will be bringing the
  supplies,
what vehicles will carry which supplies, and the contact information
  for
people that are transporting the FSBA booth materials so I can help
coordinate that effort, if desired. I have all the man hours covered
for manning the booth & a call list of volunteers willing to help
  set up
or tear down the booth...but more information would help this effort.

I thank you for your cooperation & am looking forward to seeing you all

A quorum was not present and so formal voting was not possible. Nevertheless, those present decided to print 2,000 black and white copies of a one-page brochure designed by Malcolm Sanford. An alternative design by Brendhan Horne was put on hold for the next printing of a brochure more oriented toward the general public. Karen Wassmer offered to combine the best of both brochures into another for submission to the full body.

Tony Hogg reported minimal input based on his report reprinted in the last meeting's minutes, and reprinted here.

Preliminary Report Of FSBA Constitution Revision Committee

In February 2008, FSBA President Reno Plenge appointed a committee to review the FSBA constitution and bylaws. I am soliciting input from the FSBA managers as we continue this task.

Malcolm Sanford has posted on the FSBA website the EAS strategic planning document. Organizations should periodically reevaluate and adjust to remain relevant to its members. The

FSBA is facing similar challenges.

How do we increase membership?

What steps are necessary to Insure financial stability?

Are our policies and procedures efficient and representative of all members?

Do we need to adjust programs to keep pace with changes in member’s expectations?

Are we prepared to address potential loss of beekeeping rights?

In reviewing the constitution and bylaws we found some issues that are easy to address such as amending documents to allow for electronic meetings and dissemination of information. These moves will not only allow for better participation but can save the FSBA money. Other issues are more difficult to get a solid grasp on. That is the purpose of this message. To solicit input from the Board of Managers and Officers. With your input we can expand our vision more.

Just as there are many differing opinions there may be more than one good solution for any issue. I wish to thank you in advance for your honesty.

1. Is the current managing structure equally representative of commercial, sideline and

hobby interests?

2. One perplexing question relates to local association membership/FSBA

membership/FSBA management. I It appears a local association is entitled to have a

position on the board of managers without any members in good standing with the FSBA.

Should board seats be allocated according to number of FSBA members in each

association? Should we elect board members at large from FSBA members in good

standing?

3. Should we select a board of managers and entrust the board elect officers to govern the

board?

4. Should officers be vested with the power to vote at board meetings?

5. The Executive Secretary is an appointed position. The elected position of secretary is not

used; should we eliminate the elected position of secretary?

6. Should the FSBA seek tax-exempt status from the IRS?

7. Should we consider establishing the position of Executive Director?

8. Strength is in numbers; how do we increase membership in FSBA?

9. Are FSBA programs in line with members expectations?

As you can see, these are some tough questions with potentially complex answers. I appreciate your time in responding with your comments.

Tony Hogg

FSBA Constitution Committee.

Members of the Board of Managers are asked to bring these to the attention of their constituents and initiate discussions so the Committee can go to the next step in drafting specific modifications. Mr. Hogg said he had received no input in spite of this request.

Discussion ensued of the value of the association. Many beekeepers are not convinced the association is doing anything for beekeepers; most board of manager members, however, have not queried their membership on this; many themselves don't understand what the association does or believe it is important.

President Duggar visited the Apalachee group last month and this was said to be a good start. Karen Wassmer said she would appreciate a presentation by someone at meetings she attends (Northeast Florida and Jacksonville) on the Association. The real value of the Association as a lobbying group continues to be missed by many members and non members alike, even though its activities have been responsible for an enormous amount of funding for research and are a major reason Florida has a state apiculturist (Jerry Hayes) and extension specialist (Dr. Jamie Ellis).

Brendhan Horne said he planned to have a call soon regarding the summer meeting, June 19, 2010.

No date was set for the next conference call, but most on the call were encouraged that at least the Board of Managers was meeting now and was considering a more regular meeting schedule in the future.

Meeting adjourned 8:23 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Malcolm T. Sanford
Executive Secretary

I agree that Tony and/or Bob L will be sufficient.

Subject: What was the study I was referring to in the Interview

Greetings,

I did not see the interview on TV, the reporter spent about an hour talking and
filming various things at my home

I explained in detail that the bees should be doing fine in the cold weather,
but some weak hives (without access to honey) might be more affected by the cold
than others.

The study I was referring to in was taken from the book Honey bee biology and
Beekeeping by Dewy M Caron Chapter 15 page 214 in Box 32

-*-*-* here begins the text -*-*-*
There is a practical limit to which bees can contract their cluster. A portion
of the cluster must be in contact with honey stores at all times since this is
the fuel neede to run the muscles which generate the heat. Heat loss is
proportional to the number of bees in the cluster. Small clusters are less
likely to survive compared to large clusters. In a study in Scotland a bee
colony of 18,000 lost 35% of its population while a colony of 4500 lost fully
85% of the adults over winter.
-*-*-* end of quote

I did show the reporter one hive that I had captured in a swarm just after the
goldenrod season. This hive had no honey reserve and I put the comb into an
insulated box and put a NUC with a top feeder on it. However, since the cluster
is small and they did not have much honey, I expect a high loss over the winter.

Very interesting............
Your comments were taken way out of context.  The study results were that in one weak colony in Scotland, 85% of the individual bees died over the winter.  That makes much more sense than up to 85% of colonies can die due to cold weather.  Like you and everyone else said, the bees should be fine as long as they have enough food.  They'll starve to death before they freeze to death.
Thx.

Greetings,

I did not see the interview on TV, the reporter spent about an hour talking and filming various things at my home

I explained in detail that the bees should be doing fine in the cold weather, but some weak hives (without access to honey) might be more affected by the cold than others.

The study I was referring to in was taken from the book Honey bee biology and Beekeeping by Dewy M Caron Chapter 15 page 214 in Box 32

-*-*-* here begins the text  -*-*-*
There is a practical limit to which bees can contract their cluster. A portion of the cluster must be in contact with honey stores at all times since this is the fuel neede to run the muscles which generate the heat. Heat loss is proportional to the number of bees in the cluster. Small clusters are less likely to survive compared to large clusters. In a study in Scotland a bee colony of 18,000 lost 35% of its population while a colony of 4500 lost fully 85% of the adults over winter.
-*-*-* end of quote

I did show the reporter one hive that I had captured in a swarm just after the goldenrod season. This hive had no honey reserve and I put the comb into an insulated box and put a NUC with a top feeder on it. However, since the cluster is small and they did not have much honey, I expect a high loss over the winter.

I've just uploaded the 12/2009 Treasurer's report for our association and wanted
to provide the membership with a brief overview.

I've added the inventory cost of shirts, hats and honey to the balance sheet.
This has not been done in the past as these are cash basis financial statements
but I thought showing them would better imform our members of the amount of
club funds invested in inventory and the necessity of selling these items to
convert the inventory into cash.

Looking at the Profit and Loss comparison you'll notice that we took in $640 in
contributions, $1260 in dues and sold $1953.13 of clothing during the year. The
total cost of the shirts and hats were only $1441.28 so we've already covered
our cost and all future sales will be pure profit. We also sold $1785.00 of
honey which has recovered our $1416.60 of honey purchases so future sales of
honey will be pure profit as well. Overall, we took in $818 more than we spent
during the year and have $1589.80 of cash and checking account funds available
for use.

Thanks for all who helped make this a profitable year for ABA. We couldn't have
done it without you.

Bob

I do not know of these things, but are we allowed to say things like we made a profit when we are a "non-profit" company? Does the IRS care?
I would hate to get into trouble with them.
Just checking, so I do not say anything out of context.

Its my understanding that profit is fine, it just has to be put back into the organization rather than divided amongst shareholders, that's the difference between "for profit" and "not for profit" which is a better term than "non-profit" since that carries a slight difference in meaning.

I've been setting up my own not for profit, and so think my facts are accurate, but maybe not.

Micky is correct.  as long as the "profit" isn't distributed to a member/members but used by the organization in carrying out their exempt purpose you're ok.
