Gir forest officials observe "human behaviour" among lions.

Forest officials in Gir have observed rare behavioural pattern in a pride of Asiatic lions, exhibiting characteristics similar to humans.
Two adult male lions seem to rule 32 felines, keeping a close eye on the sub-adults.
The two adult lions guarded the group, which ideally comprises of one to three adult females, their cubs and sub-adults. They move around the forest and assume the role of protectors to father the other lions...

Dear Freinds,
It is very common behaviuor to protect a pride by strong males 2-4 males and protect the entire pride or family members and time to punish the sub-adult male when they do any mistake. It is simple that male lions want to flow its genetical materials in future generation and usually killed the cubs below the ager of 2 years when male take over the pride from earlier males.Since because of the habitat and availalbilty of prey now a day pride size has reduced to 6-8 in areas where visibilty is more in the estern Gir and out side the Devaiya Safari Park pride side is more beacuse these are the area left ideal habitat for lion.
So this Behaviour is common in case of lion.
With best wishes,
Sinha

Carnage in Kutchh, Gujarat: death of flamingos. Terrible reports coming in of poachers at work and also major deaths on account of contact with high tension wires. Any other nation in the world would treat these winged angels as honoured guests. This awful photograph was sent by D.V. Girish (Wildlife First!) and his friend Murthy. This happened this morning in the Velaser village, Malya Taluka, in Rajkot District, Little Rann of Kutchh. There were a total of 33 chopped off heads and the suspicion is that some 'blacksheep' fishermen were involved. All the heads, legs and feathers were found in one place. No high tension wires were close by but elsewhere in Kutchh, huge deaths from high tension wires are also being reported.

1st February, 2012 will mark the beginning of this years birds-fighting season. An annual event celebrated by the farmers all over the Indian Sub-continent.
Read this article which shows how the farmers use drugs to make their pet birds fight. These birds are kept hungry before the event as well.
Hoping that this festival is also banned by the Governments of India and Pakistan. Just like the GIP has previously banned Basant (yearly festival which lead to the dead of numerous people, mostly in Lahore).

Dear Wildlife & Nature Lovers,

A walk on the wild side.

The caravan cautiously passed through the arid landscape of Balochistan. Sand dunes, piles of rock and expanses of tall, dried grass — the last a reminder of the healthy monsoon that had visited earlier — stretched to the horizon. It was dusk and the travellers were wary of the elusive shadows that moved in the grass like phantoms at the edge of their vision. The setting sun itself was an enemy, painting the grass in hues of red, saffron and magenta — perfect camouflage for the stalkers hiding in it...

To protect the rapidly shrinking habitat of the Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) in Kutch, Gujarat, The Corbett Foundation has launched an online petition requesting Shri. Dear Folks,

As most of you are aware our INW guidelines do not provide for discussion of conservation related topics, mainly due to the seriousness of its nature.

Conservation India (www.conservationindia.org) -- a new site exclusively devoted to wildlife conservation has just been launched. Conservation India (CI), is a non-profit, non-commercial web portal.

Ramki Sreenivasan and Shekar Dattatri are the chief coordinators of the site. We feel this is a serious attempt at helping the cause of wildlife conservation in India and are happy to applaud this effort.

CI's goal is to enable conservation action by providing reliable information and the tools needed to campaign effectively. CI is committed to promoting conservation strategies that are rooted in evidence.
CI aspires to become a one-stop-shop for conservation related news, views, tutorials, case studies, photos and videos, with the aim of furthering sensible conservation dialogue and action.

CI is a great platform to contribute and share conservation images. Please do share your images which highlights a conservation issue in your region.
You can upload your images directly to CI (http://www.conservationindia.org/gallery/contribute) or email them to info@....

CI also welcomes your contributions in the form of local news, articles, videos, opinions or factoids. All contributions will be acknowledged and duly credited.

Please also help CI improve by providing feedback about the site.

I found an interesting article, so I thought I'd share!

Gir lions country’s property, says SC.

The Gujarat government’s argument that there is no need to move the Asiatic lions from the state’s Gir territory prompted the Supreme Court to observe on Tuesday that the big cats are not the “property” of the state, but belong to the country...

Veteran foresters blame trust deficit for discord.

When Gujarat’s veteran foresters recollect the long-standing disagreement over the Asiatic Lion Reintroduction Project (to Madhya Pradesh), they say they were neither consulted nor shown the chosen sites in MP, and that foresters from that state never studied the conservation techniques employed here...

A old proposition and treid to solve in so many ways.I am not going into those topics.
My only question is that
If you go through the data avilable from FD take only 10 year data on livestock killing you will be surprised that people claimed more from outside the Gir NP/WLS for livestock than inside the Gir NP/WLS/I am sure of it just see and find out.
Second why so? The reason is the Maldharies have naturallly learned how live with the big cat and if their cattle killed they feel it was a share of Sawag. But now a day because of Milk revolution in around Gir situation changed alot. If  you go any ness around 11 am you will be offered black tea but in ealry 80's when I used to roam around in Gir on foot.It was  not the situation.
I had a detailed discussion on this matter with Dr SA Chauhan Fomer PCCF in 2007.He was samr in veiw what he said today.

Lioness hit by porcupine quills treated at Junagadh hospital.

A lioness from Gir sanctuary, wounded by porcupine quills, was recovering well after an operation, forest officers said today. The animal was found at Kardapan of Jasadhar Forest Range three days ago, said Anshuman Sharma, Assistant Forest Conservator. A forest officer found that she was not moving, and on inspection, realised that two porcupine quills had pierced her neck...

Dear Wildlife & Nature Lovers,

I found an interesting article, so I thought I'd share!

Orphaned lionesses learn motherhood at Junagadh zoo.

This may well be called the mother of all experiments in conservation of Asiatic Lions. Sakkarbaug Zoo officials in Junagadh have successfully taught motherhood to four lionesses that were orphaned as cubs.
Forest officials observed that when orphaned female cubs turned adult in captivity and gave birth, they did not know how to take care of their little ones, as they had never lived with their mothers. "As a result, almost half of the cubs born to an orphaned lioness during the first littering died," said a senior forest official...
