cyberactivists: Brisbane City Council's Future Plan for Mt Coot-tha   Message List

we hope that powerful out can tough it out.......

Another shocking message from Jill Brown:

Hi everyone

I begin to wonder what BCC has in mind for Mt Coot-tha in the long term.

Cr Peter Matic, Toowong, our local alderman, sent a newsletter which contained
an item about this, so I checked the website: http://www.coothaclassic.com.au/
The front page and map appear below. Note that it is described as the
"inaugural" Mt Coot-tha Classic, which leads me to think it will not be the
last. BCC is one of the sponsors. At least it does not go right over the
mountain, though the noise probably will!. It would seem the parking area at JC
Slaughter Falls will be the pits for the last weekend in May - in every sense!

Cheers
Jill

Welcome
30 - 31 May 2009 Cootha Classic
Motor transport has played a pivotal role in the development of Brisbane and
Queensland. It has also provided a source of entertainment for its citizens –
motorsport.
Mt Coot-tha or One Tree Hill as it was known, has a history of competitive
motorsport on its slopes. Records show that the first hill climb there was won
by Boyd Edkins in April 1915.
Another competitor and winner of the early Mt Coot-tha Hillclimbs in 1916 and
1918 was a FZ Eager, a name later associated with sales and distribution of
motor vehicles in Brisbane at Eagers Motors.
The inaugural Cootha Classic is part of the Brisbane 150 Celebrations and will
provide an opportunity for the residents of Brisbane to view the various forms
of motorsport enjoyed by Queenslanders over the years.
The motorsport heritage of Queensland will be on display. Race cars, motorcycles
including Grand Prix bikes, rally cars and speedway vehicles will be present at
the Cootha Classic. Some will compete, some will provide demonstrations and some
will be on static display.
The Historic Racing Car Club (Qld) Inc,. Rotary, Channel 7 and the Brisbane City
Council who have all contributed to the organization of this event, invite all
Queenslanders to enjoy the Cootha Classic.
Message from the
Lord Mayor
BRISBANE CELEBRATES ITS 150TH BIRTHDAY IN 2009.
To mark the historic milestone, a year-long calendar of events has been planned
to help make Brisbane the most exciting place in Australia.
Specially-commissioned events such as The Cootha Classic will contribute colour
and passion to this major celebration of Brisbane past, present and future.
Motor racing has a fascinating history in Brisbane. Some of the first recorded
events were held at One Tree Hill, Mount Coot-tha in the 1920s.
Eighty years later, on the eve of our historic birthday, Council is pleased to
support the re-establishment of the classic hill-climb race up Mount Coot-tha.
The two days will not only represent a stunning classic car event, but also a
valuable means to preserve Brisbane's heritage.
Campbell Newman
Lord Mayor

Hi I would think the hill climb will be held on the other side of the hill from the Owl roost. I doubt it will have a great effect on the Owls. There's...
