Welcome to the group! What should we call you? My name is Kate and my
beagle is Charlotte, 5-6 years old, a bit on the chunky side (tip #1.
beagles are food motivated and
will learn by giving them treats as a reward but try to keep down the
treats! Instead, see if
your beagle will eat frozen green beans or frozen slices of carrots..much
better for them.)
Tip #2. Never, never let your beagle off the leash. They have a terrific
sense of smell and
their nose takes them to where ever the scent is. They will track an animal
for miles. Tip #3. Watch the front door as they will try to escape! Tip
#4. If your beagle is a puppy I
hope when you get it it is 10-12 weeks old...anything younger should not be
taken away
from it's mama as the mama beagle will teach her young many important things
before you
get him. Tip #5. If you have a fenced in yard, beagle proof it. You can
find how to do that at: http://clubs.akc.org/NBC/beagleproof.html . This
site gives you information not only about beagle proofing your yard, but
your house as well. Here is proof that your
beagle can be a real escape artist (click on the attachment!!!)
Tip #6. Feed your beagle a good quality dog food. Charlotte gets Wellness
Weight Management (I told you she was a chubber) but there are numerous good
dog foods out there.

The only way you are allowed to belong to this group is that you must
promise you will
vote for BEAGLES at
http://www.webvoter.net/en/vote.cgi?id=57393&language=2
I'm just kidding, of course, but we need votes to raise up the beagles and
who wouldn't
vote for beagles as they are the best in the world!!!

One more thing, we like to see pictures of beagles, other dogs, cats, etc!
Sometimes we
go OT (Off Topic), but we are like one big family here and we enjoy stuff
other than beagles believe it or not!!!

Good luck with your beagle and hope to see some pictures real soon!

Hello There, I am new to the group. I will be bringing my beagle home the first
week of December. He is a male and we have named him "Sawyer". I have 3 sons
and I care for my mom who is disabled, but still mobile and active. I have put
off getting a family dog for a long time and finally I feel the time is right.
I chose a beagle because my neighbor/friend had one growing up and he was the
best dog in the world. He made friends with all the kids in the neighborhood.
It seems that whenever there was a lonely kid around, "woofy" would always find
them and make their day better.

Are these beagles neutered or spayed?  Up to date on heartworm preventative and if not do you know heartworm status.  Are they microchipped?  What about any housetraining started, crate training? etc.

Since there are so many rescues that are full right now and with hunting season upon us there will many that "won't hunt" hitting the shelters and then of course ofter hunting all the older ones will be surrendered as well as those owned by hunters that "don't want to feed them all year routine".  Along with the three I have been contacted about form "owner surrendered" due to divorce or losing home,,,it make it really difficult to place dogs with out full history.  I have to say those without full medical clearance, and the older are just mostly out of luck.  So sad and so frustrating.

Also, a brindle beagle......not a recognized color so is it a mix?

Hi All –
I work with hunting groups here in northern VA to find homes for retired &
non-hunting beagles. I have 3 that need new homes. They are healthy, happy
beagles living in a professional kennel, and need time to adjust to family
living. It usually takes just a few weeks to go from hunting hound to couch
potato! They require fenced yards! Full history & behavior is well-known. All
are current on healthcare and have rabies certificates.

Flyboy – Male, 3-year-old tri-color. Big, handsome, sensitive eager-to-please
guy. Very athletic – can jump 5 feet, so needs a secure living space! Would do
best living with a female dog for company or alone – doesn't always get along
with other males. Would be great for an active family, or as an agility
prospect. Brother to Foxtrot – could go as a pair!

Foxtrot – Female, 3-year-old tri-color brindle. A happy, bouncing, out-going and
exuberant girl! Wants to be your very best friend. Would be GREAT with older
kids. Very submissive and low on pack order. Great with young dogs and puppies.
Flyboy's Sister.

Icon – Female, 9-year-old tri-color. She is retired after many years as pack
leader. Her nickname is "The Queen" – LOVES attention and will sit for hours to
be told how beautiful she is. She will still hunt, so best if you don't have
cats or small pets. She has very good manners, but can be vocal and "sings" for
attention. She is the mother of Foxtrot and Flyboy – they did not inherit her
hunting skills. She deserves a spot in a great family for her retirement years.

Well K I could not be without a Beagle for long and that Baby needed help or he would of been dead today and our adoption coordinator just knew ... It sure is bittersweet so. When I got done to vacuuming my car today and Bo was at the gate I saw Trouble for a moment or when he walks in the yard and I see the Beagle colors. The funny thing is he seems to have Trouble habits, like he likes to lay in Don's chair and he took exactly the same spot on the couch like Trouble used too. For me it is just odd because Trouble could not jump on the couch anymore the last 2 years. Ahhh I am always stunned about a dog that can hear:) Mine were all deaf and Big D cannot hear either since his ear infection. Over are the times when a rattling bag does not bring a Beagle into the kitchen:)

I'm really glad Bo seems to be working out for you, Sylvie.

Wauu I am absolutely amazed by a Beagle who listens and minds. First Bo
infested us with Fleas, even Big D has them even so he gets Frontline
plus once a month. So Bo got a flea bath this morning. He did remind me
of Trouble in the tub so:) So off to the vets we went and got the one
time pill, Frontline for Bo, Big D still had some. Then I went to buy a
gentle leader, a new collar and a new bed for him. Then I came home and
wanted to take a nap, it was a holiday for me after all. I was debating
about putting Bo in his crate but decided different. So I took his new
pillow and placed it in front of the bed. Big D hopps into bed now and I
am not going through that again of 2 dogs in the bed worried that Big D
might push Bo out, because Big D is 45 pounds after all.Bo wanted to
jump in and I told him no. He settled on his pillow and took his nap, he
did not even try to jump up. 5 min later he was belly up.
Then it was time for the gentle leader. I put him in the car and went to
the riverfront park because they have a nice paved walkway about 1/2
mile long. At first he was not happy and was fighting it, but within
minutes he was walking nice. The last few hundred yards I took off the
leader and he walked like he has always heeled on the leash.
Heheh but he is a Beagle alright. I went to the other room to get
something and I had dinner on the table. When I came back out there were
2 paws and a nose on the table:) We did had a growling issue but he was
corrected right away.

Sylvie, I don't think he could have a better forever home.  Bless his heart, he's had a rough time for one so young.  I agree with Dawn, he needs you...and I suspect that need is mutual.  Trouble knew what he was doing.  :)

I have recently joined this list and this is my first post.  We have two beagles that will be 4 on Jan 12 2010  they are neutered and spayed brother and sister named Toby and Shiloh.  Shiloh is a tricolor and a real beauty and weighs 22 pounds  Toby is traditional saddle back and weighs 40 pounds  He is much taller than his sister and we have owned them since they were 5 weeks old.  Toby was diagnosed with Lupus at 11 months and went from 22 pounds to 45 pounds in one month on steroids  we took him of them gradually or a 18 month period  He is now  on no meds for the lupus.  He is a grand guy and we love this  beagle so much.  They are family.  Toby is not aggressive once he got off the meds and does not get anymore to eat than his sister  but still has not lost the steroid weight.  Does anyone have any  experience with lupus in their beagle  Also  Toby and Shiloh have a  big back yard with free  access thru a doggie door and live in the house with us.  They have never been so much as had a newpaper  rolled up  and used on them  No is sufficient yet Toby will sometimes just bow his head and rollover  when we come to love on him.   Many times he will act like a dog that has been abused when no incident has ever happened of abuse.  THey have never been out of our care expcept for 3 days when they were under a year.  Any idea of what causes that in his personality.

Bye for now  Bev

Yes,
Hard and sag lessons learned from the past and like I said I am so paranoid. Don will let them together in the house tomorrow since my anciently is just making the dogs nervous. Plus thanks to the internet learned a lot of dog things. I am not sure I sat on the couch and let Bo come up, I told him lap, then Don sat down in his chair and Bo wanted to go over to him.Well Bo was really uncomfortable and Don moved him and we think he growled but we are not sure. He came back over to me and when I got up I told him down and he jumped down right away. He is very eager to please. He sits nicely and waits for his treat to come to him. Heheh he already knows the blue bag:) Outside when you call him he will come immediately but he will duck, tail between the legs. He is somewhat timid. Like he was hit before. He is wagging and one sec later he ducks.
We will see. He is so small so, much smaller than Trouble and Trouble was not a big Beag. He has that white spot on his saddle. When we walked today I heard 2 or 3 people say look at this good looking Beagle.

You are being very smart about introducing things gradually.  Big D's pack was the same for so many years.  Now, this is something totally new...and energetic!  Take your time.

That is what I think the boy has been through enough homes and I don't want him shifted around any more. I mean 4 homes in one year is enough for any Beagle. He measured a little under 13 inches and weighs about 18 pounds. As soon as Don sat down on his chair he hopped in his lap and wanted to be padded. Now he is laying in his lap. I mean we have to watch him but I make sure that I great Big D first and that Big D gets the treat first and I cuddled Big D. He has never been a lap dog but I told him a 100 times today what for a good boy he is . Hihi it is funny. I realized that I don't even know what to do with a dog that can hear. Trouble was deaf at least the last year of his life and so was Fuzzy. Big D don't hear much and don't see much out of one of his eyes. That is were the caution comes in, fast moves make him jump 100 feet in the air.
But I think he found is forever home. I am sure Trouble send him to me, because he knew how much I missed him and having a Beagle.

Bless his heart!  It sounds like he is trying so hard to please, even though he's gotten so many mixed signals in the past.  I'm so glad things are looking up for him to stay, Sylvie.  He needs you!  He is so darned cute, too!

Yes Dawn thanks and it worked. I left at 6:15 AM this morning. At about 7 Don had Bo and Big D up in the house together. He said there was some sniffing but no other problems. So Big D and Bo have been in the house together all day and been out together with Don of course. Big D will look at him go back and sniff him and Bo will sniff him but not for more than a few seconds. Now they are both waked out and sleeping. Bo on the
couch and Big D on the floor. Very weired but Big D seems to be protective of the water bowl but he did this with Fuzzy as well. As long as Big D is up there alone. I had to put Bo in his place for the treat they both got. Bo wanted to grab the piece Big D had dropped to the ground. Big D is used to it Trouble that little stinker did that all the time but Big D would always growl first, he did not growl.
But oh my gosh he has that real high pitched howl. Trouble sounded this way when he got hurt. Bo was outside with Don at the fence and I heard it boy I jumped about 10 feet in the air but it was just Bo. Then he loves to sit on top of the couch pillows to look out. We have a lot of deer here even in our front yard. He went nuts every time., running to the door. Well this is because Don opens it too look out, the glass part of the screen door is glass. So now he has to learn some manners like jumping on people. On the same token he is very timid, if you call him he will come immediately  and pee a few drops. He is shrugging away from the hand if it comes at him but he ducks and does not bite. He did not have accident over night. He is a smart little guy and learned right away when I told him no leave Big D alone or lay down ( of course firm but not yelling or a raised voice.) He sure shows all signs of either being yelled at or was spanked. He is very vocal outside, boy cats there he goes:)
But all together he is a cute little Beag and I think he has found his forever home. He is flea invested. His former owners had him on HEARTZ no way I am getting front line tomorrow and a bath. The frontline I have is for bigger dogs like Big D

FDA NEWS RELEASE

FDA Health Alert for Certain Pet Treats Made by Pet Carousel Products
may be contaminated with Salmonella

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is issuing this health alert to
warn consumers not to use Pig Ears and Beef Hooves pet treats
manufactured by Pet Carousel because the products may be contaminated
with Salmonella. The products were distributed nationwide in both bulk
and retail packaging for sale in pet food and retail chain stores. Pet
Carousel is based in Sanger, Calif.

The products were manufactured under conditions that facilitate
cross-contamination within batches or lots. Although no illnesses
associated with these products have been reported, the FDA is advising
consumers in possession of these products to not handle or feed them
to their pets.

The affected pig ear products were packaged under the brand names
Doggie Delight and Pet Carousel. The affected beef hooves were
packaged under the brand names Choo Hooves, Dentley's, Doggie Delight,
and Pet Carousel. All sizes and all lots of these products made by Pet
Carousel are included in this alert.

During September 2009, the FDA conducted routine testing of pig ears
made by Pet Carousel. The test results detected a positive reading for
Salmonella. This prompted an FDA inspection of Pet Carousel's
manufacturing facilities. During the inspection, the agency collected
additional pet treat samples. Further analysis found Salmonella
present in beef hooves, pig ears and in the manufacturing environment.

Salmonella can affect both humans and animals. People handling dry pet
food and/or pet treats can become infected with Salmonella, especially
if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact
with the treats or any surfaces exposed to these products. Consumers
should dispose of these products in a safe manner by securing them in
a covered trash receptacle.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience some or all of
the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea,
abdominal cramping and fever. Although rare, Salmonella can result in
more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis
(inflammation of the lining of the heart), arthritis, muscle pain, eye
irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these
signs after having contact with this product should contact their
health care provider immediately.

Pets with Salmonella infections may become lethargic and have diarrhea
or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may only experience
a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected, but
otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or
humans. If your pet has consumed any of the affected products or is
experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian
immediately.

The FDA will continue to investigate this matter to determine the
source of the Salmonella contamination and offer updates as
appropriate.

Five weeks is far, far too young an age to take a puppy away from his mamadog
and littermates. At that age, he is barely fully weaned.
Responsible breeders will not place a pup until 9,10 or even 12 weeks old.
During the time the puppy is fully weaned and about 12 weeks old, the
interaction with the mamadog and siblings teaches him many valuable social
skills such as bite inhibition, independence, and acceptable play behavior. When
that opportunity is denied the puppy, he may later develop temperament and/or
behavior issues like aggression, playbiting or shyness.
It sounds as if your boy may be "hand shy". When you want to pet him, don't come
at him overhand, from above his head, but rather start out underhand, palm up
and just scratch his chest for a while. When he seems comfortable, move in to
other cuddling, but avoid bringing your hand down from over his head.
Good luck.

Best,

K

Don will let them together in the house tomorrow since my anciently is just
making the dogs nervous. Plus thanks to the internet learned a lot of dog
things. I am not sure I sat on the couch and let Bo come up, I told him lap,
then Don sat down in his chair and Bo wanted to go over to him.Well Bo was
