I allow the propolis to disolve in pure grain alcohol and then paint the inside of the hive bodies with it. I also use this to make other colored varnishes...

That's right. Color doesn't matter at all. One beekeeper I know painted his hives to match the color of his house. Some beekeepers paint their hives different...
