The mustang competition and adoption had a disappointing end to a project that
was very disappointing for me. Little Sally and I did better then I thought we
would in the ground work but the next day her neck swelled up where she got some
injection 3 days earlier. She stopped eating and drinking for almost 2 days.
Finally she started to eat again but because of the swelling they did not put
her in the adoptions. Another trainer took her to finish her off her training.
It was a disappointed ending to a disappointing project but I can only blame
myself for not having the time to do it to the level I had hoped for.
With about a week to go in the 90 days I had with her I was starting to see her
interact with me. I had seen other mustangs reach this point in a few hours of
training but now I’m 90 day into it so it was a very slow go. I also was
starting to find that middle gear to her reactions that is so critical to
training. Up to this point she would freeze or explode but training is a lot
about movement and controlling it and with out a middle gear in her reaction it
was very difficult.
I might have been the only one in the event with a full time non-horse job and
work was requiring more time form me then I had hoped. Other outside events
were interfering with what little free time I had for training. With a week
left before the competition I got a call form the woman who owns the horse arena
that I lease. The bank was in foreclosure on the property and we have maybe a
month before getting kicked out. I spent most of my free time dealing with this
and if my lease would allow me to stay on the property when the bank takes it
over. The short answer is maybe but I would have to take the bank to court to
contest my lease with them. I lacked the time and money to do this so I was
looking for a place to move my horses and not spending time training.
The foreclosure on the property looks to have a happy ending for me. Because of
the high number of bank foreclosures the getting kicked out part of it was
getting delayed, giving time for the place to sell and the new owners are very
interested in me staying on at the place. Still some details to work out but it
looks like I will still have my training barn. Now if I can only find the time
to train horses again.
