Here's another weird anal gland story.
As I mentioned, the vet I worked for only expressed glands if they
were swollen. That was done externally and always produced a rank tar-
like substance and a bit of liquid. On few occasions I've done this
myself on one dog because of odor - no leakage. It was done
externally and produced a tiny amount of brown liquid.
This same dog was taken to the vet for a skin scraping because of
excessive itching and hair loss. I wasn't there - my farm helper took
him. The vet said his glands were impacted and expressed them. I
assume this was by the internal method used now. What he got out
looked like cottage cheese. Cottage cheese??? I have never heard of
anything like that. He said there was no infection, just empaction.
Here in Arkansas, the farmers buy huge vials of vax at the feed
store. Some of them may vax their farm dogs at the same time as the
livestock - or not. All they would have is a receipt for buying the
vax - including rabies.
When I last raised a litter of 5 orphaned pups, the vet said they'd
need weekly vax because immunity from the mother was unknown. The
pups were 2-3 weeks old. I didn't know any better. I don't remember
how many weeks of shots there were but the vet sent them home with me
to administer. I wasn't experienced with giving shots. Sometimes a
puppy jerked and only got a partial. I called the vet. He said not to
worry. If I'd only gotten one drop under the skin it would have the
same effect as a full dose! ONE DROP? That makes sense to me now but
it didn't then. I assume that would apply to ALL vax and ALL animals,
regardless of size or age.
