Subject: My new pets

Hi everyone. We're new to this group, and would like to let you know
a little about myself. We live in Leader Saskatchwan. I used to
have
Corn snakes growing up, and any other pet I could come home with.
When I returned to Leader after college, I was petless. My first pet
wasn't a "small animal" his name is Sarge. He is a massive (200lbs)
Black and White Great Dane (Boston).
Then I aquired a ball python (saw the cutie in a petstore, and
couldn't leave it there).
I started looking up mice on the internet, and found some Rat places.
I was surprised to find out that they don't stink like mice do, and
make excellent pets. I saw some very cute Rats, and decided I wanted
to aquire some as pets. The first ones I bought, I got from Kate 2
female black hooded, and two female fawn hooded, all doing really
well. On the same trip I picked up 3 male littermates (black
berkshire, black hooded, agouti hooded), and a male and 3 female
litter mates (all beige). We (O.k, mostly Sheila) built some really
nice (huge and escape proof) cages, and may start up an internet site
for people to order them.

Exactly one week after picking up my fancy Rats, I got 2 African
Gambian Giant Pouch Rats flown in. They are only 3 months old (takes
8 months to mature) but already have exceeded the size of an adult
rat. I am getting a male in the near future. Males can reach 8lbs,
and they are 36'' from nose to tail. I also have always had a
facination with snakes.
I have reserved some Albino Burmese Pythons, nd red tail boas, but
also plan to get Amazon Basin Emerald Tree Boas, and maybe some other
species.
I apply for my zoo permit on Monday, then I am free to own many
exotics.

I love my Rats, and think they are awsome pets. Most people who find
out I have Rats, can't believe I would want them as pets. They are
stuck on the image of Junkyard Rats eating garbage with the flies.
I hope to help make Rats more popular as pets, and am interested in
aquiring more color varieties. When I start to breed them, I would
like to find good homes for all them, and donate some to schools.

Any Rats that aren't genetically sound, or have poor qualities, I
plan
to euthanize in a humane way. These will be the food source for my
Snake collection, and in the event I would happen to have an excess,
I
know a lot of snake people from Alberta, who are always looking for
Rats.

Kim,

<< What is your plan for the 20 pythons? I'm not interested in any for myself,
just curious. >>

I'm kinda curious about those 20 pythons, too - that's a LOT of snake!

<< the websites and petshops I looked into say large snakes CAN'T eat mice or
small rats, I haven't found any of the owners that feed them rabbits. What size
snakes can eat mice and how many per month?
Kim >>

Those sites sound pretty generalized - I have a couple of redtails that are 6 &
7 feet long and they can eat a couple of adult rats or one rabbit in a single
feeding. My largest ratsnake is about 6.5 or 7' long and can eat 3 or 4 jumbo
mice or a fairly large rat in one feeding. Basically you match the diameter of
the food item to the diameter of the snake. Most snakes can eat larger prey than
that, but it's a good rule of thumb to work with. Some snakes can eat prey twice
their own diameter with no problems, other snakes have trouble with anything
larger than their own diameter and must be fed smaller prey.

Also, most snakes that are commonly kept in captivity are rodent eaters:
ratsnakes are the most popular (I think, don't quote me!) followed by mid sized
boas and pythons. Some snakes are specialized - often garters & other aquatic
snakes will only eat fish, some arboreal snakes only like birds. There are some
that will only eat other snakes, and some that are very prey-specific; there's a
snake in the area of the Mississippi valley that only eats a certain breed of
amphuma (spelling?) a type of river eel. Others only eat crawdads. Some
burrowing snakes only eat insects, worms, etc.

Hope that helps!

Mark

Hi Kim.
I plan to keep the Pythons until I sell enough, to pay for the ones I'm
keeping (will be able to decide which ones I want) (getting an extremely
good deal on 20)

As far as large snakes and food. The individual who owns these burmese
feeds his large male 5 Rabbits per feeding!!! Usually people tend to try
and feed 1 large animal to a snake, as some won't eat more than 1 animal per
sitting.
I have a Ball Python, who has a small head and neck compared to the body.
The petshop always fed him 2 fuzzy's, so he wouldn't have trouble
swallowing. His body needs more food than his neck will allow him to eat
per feeding.

Large Pythons are fully capable of eating Large Rabbits, even Chickens and
baby Pigs.
The reason a lot of snake owners don't feed Rabbits (or at least say they
don't) is the stigma attatched to Rabbits (Pet animal). A lot of people
aren't bothered by feeding Rats, because of the stigma attatched to them.
Puppies and Kittens would work too, but who wants to be labelled a Cat
killer. (although I do know some people, with large amounts of snakes, who
adopt whole litters of unwanted kittens when they see an add in the paper,
of course they don't tell the person what is going to happen to the cats,
but that is usually the same as Rabbits, and I do know people who will buy
Rats, say they are for pets, but feed them to their snakes anyways.)

As far as what kinds of snakes can eat mice.
Most of them, except the Giants - you would have to feed hundreds of mice a
week to a full grown Giant Boid.
Any Colubrid (Rat snakes, King snakes, Corn snakes etc) these snakes only
grow to be about 5 feet long, and most of them eat mice or juvenile rats.
Most snakes of this size are fed one mouse every 5-7 days.
When I get my Albino Burmese Pythons (am also planning on getting breeding
trio's of Redtail Boa Constrictors, Amazon Basin Tree Boas, and a few other
breeds) I will be feeding the young Pythons juvenile Rats. About 2 juvi's
every 5 days. That is 6 feedings a month x 20 snakes x 2 rats = 240 rats a
month. Usually to buy frozen feeders of this size, I would be paying around
$2.00 a rat. This way, I'll be able to provide my Snakes with fresh food,
that I have cared for, fed and supplemented. (I will be feeding my feeder
rats a good all natural, low fat, high protein growth food- free of red dye
and preservatives found in some dog and other comercial pet foods. I will
also be able to supplement them with Calcium, and vitamins that the snake
will need. It is also possible to "gut load" the rats before euthinization.
(I also plan to put them to sleep with C02, I am not cruel enough to kill
them with a fatal blow, I prefer to be nice to all of my Rats, even the
feeders when their time comes) I love animals, and will have a hard enough
time when my feeder section gets to size, and I have to say goodbye to them.

I feel if I breed the rats, and care for them, I know they have a good life.
If I get them from a commercial Rat producer, I doubt they are given the
caring they deserve in their life and death.

One more thing to note. Snakes need more Calcium requirements than other
Reptiles. Mice have a 1.5:1 calcium ratio, where as Rats only have 1:1.
Mice make better food for smaller snakes but larger snakes need larger food,
and Rats don't stink as much as mice (I keep them all in my basement,
wouldn't want stinky mice in the house (Bred mice back when I had Corn
Snakes) So that is why I am breeding Rats. Rats (my belief anyways) are
also more enjoyable and social, and make better pets than mice do, from what
I've seen.

Sorry for being so long winded,
Hope this answers a few questions of yours.
Ryan

Your girls are doing wonderful. Really socializing well. I'll send you pics
of the cages I made for them, and all of their toys. They are eating and
growing like you wouldn't believe.
As far as the Gambians. They are a little shy, but seem to like being
handled. They are the most mischievious pets I have. If you put some apple
in the one's cage, she throws it out at you. She also has taken to throwing
her bedding out on the floor. The 3 month old babies are larger than a full
grown fancy Rat. Males can get up to 8 lbs!!!
If you think a normal fancy Rat can do some damage when chewing on things,
you should see these babies. They need Parot toys, and Strong Dog type
toys, because of their massive teeth and jaws.
I am planning on getting an unrelated male, and if I have successful
breedings, I'll let you know, may be able to strike you a deal so you don't
have to pay the $250 U.S these guys are currently going for.
I was wondering what the lineage of my 4 females I got from you were.
(Parents grandparents etc). Also, what color would you call the light
hoods. (From pics I've seen they could be beige, or topaz)
I bought 2 other lines of Fancy Rats for breeding purposes, and can let you
know when I get some unrelated ones to yours. I can send pics of my babies,
and you can reserve one if you'd like. I plan on selling most of mine as
pets, but I will also need to have a seperate feeder catagory to feed my
snakes.

What is your plan for the 20 pythons? I'm not interested in any for myself,
just curious. Had an experience with a neighbor/lg. snake owner recently
which gave me the idea of further breeding my rabbits and making them
available as feeders, but I'm really at a loss. Although the websites and
petshops I looked into say large snakes CAN'T eat mice or small rats, I
haven't found any of the owners that feed them rabbits. What size snakes can
eat mice and how many per month?

Caitlin,

Oh...crap. Okay, back to the drawing board! Get another set and start anew.

The set-up and care sounds good, it sounds like you just got a bunch of
defective mice. Better luck with the next batch!

Mark
--------------------------------------------------------------
Well, unfortuneatley I don't think they'll be breeding
soon. I have two sets. In one the male died. He was
the one that was only with one female. Yesterday I
noticed something wrong with her eye. I'll try to
descrie it best I can. She is (was) an orange mouse
with red eyes. Her right eye looked like someone had
put a bead on her eye and then covered her whole eye
with black, dull paint. I fed her to the chickens.
So that takes care of one group. Now as for the other
group, the male was bitten in a certain private area,
and when it healed that certain private area was no
longer there, so I fed him to Virgil (my snake). AS
for changing bedding, I do so completly and clean the
cage once a week. They don't seem to do their
business all in one spot like my hamster did. It is
very spread all over.

Hi Kim,

I sometimes have more rats &/or mice than I know what to do with. I have a few
friends that have snakes so they get first pickings, then I go to a local
reptile store in Berkeley and trade them for store credit.

Herpkeepers.com has a section for listing herp food suppliers. Check that out
and see if it would work for you.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

I'm new to breeding feeders and to this group. Currently I am breeding rabbits,
crossbreeds/medium sized rabbits. I would like to make these rabbits available
as feeders. Is anyone else experienced in this market? What size is preferred?
Do you have direct clients or sell through a pet store?

Actually, two months is about right, so they really should start soon. You might

if you breed mice and rats. I have 2 sets of mice- 1
male and female and one male with two females. I've
had them for about 2 months and they're just not into
breeding. I purchased them as "small" mice form a
local pet store. Any ideas?

Hello list,

And hello Caitlin! I keep and breed about 44 snakes from `99 colubrid hatchlings
to a 6' redtail boa. I also have 3 frogs and 3 spiders (one of which eats small
rodents) I breed rats & mice as feeders for the zoo.

Hoping to learn more and share information about rodents & such with this list
:)

well, the bars will be a little boring if the rats can't climb them, but it
isn't the end of the world. As long as the rats arn't really stressed of
bored, they won't touch the plastic bottom. But remember, rats (especialy
males) can get HUGE, so make sure they won't outgrow this cage.

I have a bird cage that my sister's hamster used to
live in (it has several levels with ladders and such).
The wires go up and down, but not across. Is this a
problem? Also, might they chew through the plastic
bottom of the cage?

don't have wire anything bigger then a half inch, that's the standard size
for hamster cages. Baby rats are like liquid, they can slip out of anything!

I'm interested in breeding rats. What is the largest
the space between the wires can be on a cage without
the rats getting out?

Wow, I wouldn't buy from them anymore. Those were
probably fleas or ticks- both bad, obviously. If you
can find another pet store, get your breeders from
them. Depending on how many snakes you have, you
could also consider buying large quantities of frozen
mice. If not then make sure the mice you get are not
reitred or worn oout breeders, but young mice. They
might take a couple weeks or so to reach maturity.
i'm trying to breed mice right now and they smell
really bad. One pet store near me changes the bedding
every other day to keep down on odors, but the owner
told me that he was spending more on bedding than he
was making on mice in the long run. Someone suggested
rats, because they don't smell as bad. Lots to
consider :).

For superworms, I think I read that it's the same as
regular mealworms, but you have to keep them seperate
when they pupate.

how on earth do you control the smell that must come from a breeding rack of
feeder mice? I had a tough enough time controling 7 pet mice! I would love
to know how you control hundreds-thousands.

Dear Friends,

I just remembered.   Until I can get my set ups started.   I will need to find a source of frozen feeders.   I am looking frozen mice pinkies,   hoppers,   weanlings,   adults.   I am also looking for frozen rat pups and adult rats.   If anyone can help me regarding this message.   I will be more than greatful.   I'm more than willing to purchase the frozen feeders at a very reasonable price.   Thank You Very Much for all your valuable help.   You can either e-mail me privately or write to me on the list.   Whichever is easier for you.

Dear Friends,

I'm curious to know what is the best way to start up a feeder colony of mice and rats?   Considering that I'm very new to this concept.   I normally can spend about $200.00 to $300.00 on feeder mice.   Now I want to start my own breeding colony.   I'm interested in breeding mice and rats for now.   Then if I have to.   I'll start breeding other items later.   For right now.   I'm just interested in these two colonies.   Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.   Does anyone know where I can purchase extremely large healthy mice and rats?   The suppliers who I deal with their colonies look very unhealthy.  Almost anemic little runts.   I don't want to make my babies sick.   If you know anyone who sells large healthy animals.   Please let me know.   Thanks.   I know I'm going to learn a lot from this list.   Since I am on the daily digest version of the e-mails you may not hear from me until tomorrow morning.   Unless you write to me directly.   Thank You all in advance.

Such a great idea!

Mice are so expensive at the pet stores...would like to know how
people do this, cages used to house mice, etc. Also, where do you
buy the breeders to start with? The last mice we got at the pet
store had reddish-black tiny bugs on them! <UCK!>

I just joined. I actually raise rats for pets, but see nothing wrong with
feeder rat rasiers as well. I keep many small reptiles and amphibians too,
so I have lots of insect cultures. I don't keep anything big enough yet to
eat mammals, but I am contemplating getting a large tokay gecko, as I have
always wanted one, and it can eat for free with my pinkie gerbils.
