Subject: Butterfly Migration Update from South India

Dear All,

This time the migration of Tirumala septentrionis and Euploea spp. was first seen in the mid of September but it stopped after 2-3 days. Later it started in full swing in the first week of October and they continue to migrate towards western ghats till 30th of October.  Huge number of butterflies have been seen migrating at Salem, Mysore, Bangalore , SatyamangaLam, B R Hills, etc.

Later during our visit to Western Ghats, large number of females of Tirumala septentrionis were seen laying eggs on Wattakaka volubilis. Each leaf had 1-2 eggs and the creepers in the forest were full of eggs.

At few sholas in Karnataka, huge congregations of Tigers and Crows have been sighted by my good old friend Adavanne Shivaprakash.

If any of you happen to be in Western Ghats or going to western ghats, just keep an eye on Wattakaka volubilis. And please do let me know if you see huge congregations of Tiger and Crow butterflies or the caterpillars.

Do mail me if you require anything specific on this migration.

Thanks and Regards,
Kishen Das

Hi,

I would like to ask other people from/around Delhi if they have seen any Red Pierrots (Talicada nyseus) recently. I had been seeing a few in S. Delhi consistently since 2004 - esp. post monsoon - and then last year there was a sudden explosion - they were everywhere and even people not otherwise too interested in critters would point them out to me and ask about them. I also found them - for the first time - in Aligarh, 120 km away. They were present in large numbers till about mid May.

But this monsoon and after - nothing - not one. What is others' experience?

It is particularly interesting because historically this is not a Delhi species and is completely missing from earlier checklists.

best

November - 2009
Dear Nature Lovers,
There have been drastic changes in natural and countryside landscapes of our country during last few decades. We can see change in landuse, agriculture pattern, plantations, developmental activities that have caused a dramatic decrease in quality and quantity of natural resources, natural processes and biodiversity.
"Restoration and conservation of natural resources" should be priority for long term sustainabilityÂ…
for humans as well as non humans.
Regards,
Ketaki Manasi.
Restoration and conservation of natural resources.
It is seen that every major minor ecosystem of our country is in degraded stage. There are pressures of cultivation, industry, expanding cities, increased resource needs, infrastructure projects and many more human activities.
Needs of non human beings are totally neglected in this process. There is no provision to allocate resources to non human beings. (Prakash Gole, 2002)
Like non-human beings, human health, be it individual or community or a village or city, is dependent on healthy surrounding, i.e. healthy ecosystems. The most sustainable way to enrich our lives is to restore nature back to its near original stage.
Restoration is the key to allocate resources to non humans as well as to sustain resources for humans. It is about bringing back the pristine primary stage of the land.
All our natural areas are under various degrees of degradation. All these stages can be restored back to original & appropriate vegetation cover as per climatic regime.
E.g. A grassland in high rainfall areas of Western Ghats can be restored to semi-evergreen forest, which should have been there (See desktop image) while a scrubby patch in semi arid plain regions can be restored to savannah or dry deciduous forest coverÂ…
Generally, restoration can be accomplished with four successional stages. First stage could be totally "barren", with rocky outcrops, with very less poor soil and grasses which is the starting point. Once this site is "protected" from grazing and cutting "biomass accumulation" starts, mainly in the form of grasses and herbs. This adds organic matter to soil & increases soil moisture. Efforts towards increased water percolation & ground water recharge taken in this stage will provide sustainable source of water for future use. With various restoration techniques (as mentioned in earlier calendars), this stage can be made productive and slowly it reaches third stage of "regeneration". Shrub clusters play important role here as anchoring places & we can also assist the land by plantation activity. Once this stage is achieved biodiversity value of the land increases. Again with little acceleration, mature stage of ecosystem can be achieved over the years.
This process of restoration can be implemented singly or with other activities. The land, be small as an acre or very large as thousands of acres, it needs care.

True essence of restoration is to satisfy peopleÂ’s needs along with that of non human beings ! Ultimately land dwellers will get the benefit in a long run.

Hi Ashok,

These eggs have the appearance of being laid by one of the Jezebel (Delias) butterflies, which happen to share the Peacock Royal's hostplant.

Best wishes,

Keith

Subject: [ButterflyIndia] Eggs for ID

Hi!

While I was trying to spot some Peacock Royal eggs, I came across this leaf with some eggs underneath on 3rd Nov 2009.

Please let me know whether these are some butterfly eggs or not.

Regards,

Ashok Sengupta

A new one spotted at our conservatory . The cat photo is most probably of the same butterfly - bred on yellow palm. Could it be red eye ?

Dear Friends,

Vanakkam! Greetings from Chennai.

I recently had a chance to visit a reserve forest (Nanmangalam) in Chennai. I was amazed to see a good number of butterflies fluttering around. It is a dry shrub jungle, with few interesting wildlife.

This was another common butterfly that we got to see during the trail. Most of them were seen laying eggs or were found in pairs mating.

Would love to learn the ID.

(Common Castor Ariadne_merione)

If anyone in Chennai is interested to go along again, any weekend, would love to learn together.

Thank you.

Regards,

Ramjee
