For anyone interested --
The Tejon Ranch has applied for permits that would allow development of
approximately 10% of the ranch. Conservation organizations, such as Cal.
Audubon, the Sierra Club, the Endangered Habitats League, etc. have agreed to
not litigate against the project in exchange for agreements that allow for the
issuance of conservation easements that will set aside approximately 240,000
acres of wild land in perpetuity.
The EIS and HCP documents are available on the website of the USFWS Ventura
office at the following link: http://www.fws.gov/Ventura/
Pete Bloom and colleagues wrote a mitigation plan for California Condors which I
believe will make this situation a net positive for condors in Southern
California for the next fifty years.
While burrowing owls do not nest on the Tejon Ranch in significant numbers, they
do use it for wintering survival habitat and thus the preservation of vast
acreage in pristing condition offers a benefit to burrowing owls wintering in
the region.
A public comment period is in effect into early July, 2009. I have already sent
in my letter of support. I encourage interested parties to send in your own
comments, whether you agree with me or not. It is best to make your informed
voice heard...
