On Saturday the 3rd I took a day trip down the Peninsula with a non-naturalist
friend. Weather was warm with fog remaining offshore from at least Half Moon Bay
(where we cut across) down to Ano Nuevo State Reserve. Odes seen:

Ano Nuevo State Beach (30 minutes, some time before noon):

~ Blue-eyed Darner - few hawking around the parking lot, seen well in flight.
Personally familiar species.

Ano Nuevo State Reserve (2-3 hours, beginning noonish):

~ Blue-eyed Darner - few throughout, a number seen well in flight.
~ Vivid Dancer - several males & females along the trail that passes the pond on
the north. Familiar with the species, but not able to get very close as they
seemed especially flighty. Photos of both sexes allowed ID by markings when
magnified (photos not good enough for genitalia characteristics, at least to my
amateur eye).
~ Sooty Dancer - one male seen among the Vivid Dancers; photo also obtained.
Life ode, woo-hoo!
~ Pacific Forktail - one male seen well & photographed; same location as above.
Another personally familiar species.
~ ?Northern Spreadwing - few seen only moderately well & photographs too distant
to reveal much (to me) when magnified. These were along a mostly dry depression
near the North Beach e-seal viewing area. I've only seen this species once
previously, & these ones were only slightly pruinose (I didn't even note it in
the field, but can see a bit of blue in the photos.) Tentative ID.

Photos available for emailing if anyone would like to verify; I'm not completely
new to odes but certainly haven't developed my ID skills to the same degree as
with birds.
