I would imagine it's cow, just checking with the breeder who suggested it, thanks for the suggestion!   She had mentioned Mountain Dog food dealer, but I'm sure it would be cheaper at UFA:)  Rena

Rena,
I do not know what type of colostrum you are looking for. If it is from a cow you can most likely get it at the UFA store in Calgary.
Thanks Ron

Welcome Rena... I'm Terry, I started this group so I could meet other RAW feeders in Calgary and learn from them.  I have one black lab that I've been feeding RAW for about 1.5 years now and I'm completely hooked. I'd be interested in learning more about what a raw natural diet does with lifespan in Danes and other giant breeds.  My favorite breeds are almost all giants, but I am terified of getting attached to a dog and having it only live 6 years.

Sorry I've never even heard of colostrum, so don't know where to find it :o)

Hello there,

My name is Rena, and I share my home with two Great Danes (Karma
almost 5 & Zen 3) and a three legged feral cat(Klubby, about 18 years
old). I heard about the list from Ron, really glad to be able to join
a local group:) I've been feeding raw for about almost 5 years now,
Karma was about 4 months when I switched her, Zen was raised on raw,
and I switched Klubby with Karma.

Hey,

Just thought I'd write a quick message here and tell y'all that I'm
going to be starting work at the Tailblazers store on 9th Ave in
Inglewood next week. I've been working at Ribtor for the last 8
months or so, which has been pretty good, but the opportunity came up
for the Tailblazers job, which I'm hoping is going to be even better.
A chance to get paid to geek out on all this natural pet stuff! I'm
more into the whole prey items and not-so-much into the "BARF" style
of things with my own girls, but I'm thinking this should be a good
match. If anyone's in the neighborhood in the future, stop by and say
hello.

I don't know if this is of interest to any of you guys, but I just
found out that Forest Lawn Meats (way up on 17th Ave and 50th St (or
so) has pig organs (liver, spleen, kidney, etc.) for 50 cents a pound.
That's not too bad a price, at least among the other places I've
found whole organs so far.

Hope everyone's having a good summer.

Ugh barf... All I know is that the magpies around here like to eat
the girls' poop out of the yard. Well, not so much now that it's
warmer, but I think the neighborhood ones were taking full advantage
of the available buffet during the winter. I think I'd go off my food
for a bit after consuming a bird with such an undiscriminating
pallete, too! No tellin' what it just ate.

Sorry, not much of anything helpful to add...

Thanks Anika,

If I have time tomorrow I might go and check them out. I have not fed
any heart yet. Just liver and they are both fine with that. My oldest
dog Yaman caught and ate a magpie the other day. Since then he has had
a bout of the runs and is slightly off his food. Although today he
seemed fine at dinner. Anyone else ever have that problem with wild

Hi Ron,

I haven't seen any great deals on red meat -- people food or dog food
-- at the grocery stores in a bit. Might be time to check out the
pork necks at Red Deer Lake Meats that Lori was talking about.

Also remember that heart is really more of a muscle meat than an
organ. It's usually cheap. It's also really rich and some dogs can't
take much more than a little chunk without experiencing explosive
diarrhea. I wouldn't feed it too too often (once a week, maybe
twice?), but if your guys can handle it, it's a great source of meat
that isn't too expensive. My girls can totally handle quite a bit of
the stuff in a sitting, but maybe feeding it with something really
bony would be better for dogs that can't. Just an idea.

The rabbits I got were about 2lbs each. They were a pretty good meal
size for my girls, but you might want to get slightly older bigger
ones. I suppose technically you would want 'roasters' whereas us
smaller dog folks want 'fryers'.

Usually the pork necks are pretty meaty and make decent dog food, but
most of the ones you get at the supermarkets might me a little small
for your guys, especially if they like to snarf down stuff without
really bothering with that whole chewing thing. Depends on them,
really. Sometimes when you find a good deal you can't really be that
picky!

He weighs about 65-70lb's. He is very active and has a fast metabolism
but is also a picky eater. I cannot get him to eat more than 2 lb's
per day. He is a very lean Lab - all muscle with hardly any fat on him.

4lbs, WOW! Yeah I'd be jumping at $0.50 meat if I were feeding that
much! Lori would be able to comment on feeding pups raw - her Visla
has been fed raw since she got him and he eats a ton also.

Terry,

How much does Guinness weigh? The dogs I am feeding raw are still pups
and are eating like mad. Right now, it is common to have them eat
4lbs. each a day. They are still in good shape, if anything I try to
keep them on the lean side. This pork neck thing looks like a good
deal.

Good to know. Guinness isn't picky about organs - in fact they are
his favorite. He is picky about other things though - vegis in
particular. He also baulked at eating duck once. I guess I'll just
get a couple and give them a try. They sound like the perfect whole
prey meal.

Ron,

I have fed pork necks a few times. So far I've always gotten them from
Superstore - in the "interesting" meat department. They haven't been
whole, but already chopped up. I just have measured out approx 2
lb's / meal (that is what Guinness usually eats) and fed them. Haven't
had any problems with choking or anything like that, he just crunches
up the bones. They seem pretty soft and easy to crunch.

I also have never tried pork necks. How many pork necks make 1 meal?

I have been taking advantage of the Superstore for their 5kgs. of chicken legs with backs attached for 9.70. That's 88 cents a lb. They have nice little tidbits of liver and such. They are in the frozen section.

Geeez, Red Deer Lake Meats... A friend who doesn't really feed totally

Hey Anika how are you?  How are all the doggies?

My butcher guy is apparently doing pork now too – I’ll let you know next time he visits!

I’d be interested in the rabbits as well and I’ve got lots of freezer space if anyone wants to go in on a bulk order.

And for pork necks – I haven’t been there yet (too busy) but Red Deer Lake Meats which is near 22X and 37th street sells 50 lb cases of pork necks for 0.49/lb.

Good to have you on the list!

Hi all,

My name is Anika. I have three dogs -- Meridian - an 8 year old
Shepherd/Husky mix, Storm - a 7 year old AmStaff, and Natty Gann - a 3
year old Chow/Corgi mix. I started feeding the girls a raw diet in
April of 2005. At first I was making the veggie sludge and all that,
but within two or three months (and after the purchase of a food
processor!), we adopted the prey-model approach. I have posted a
couple photos of the girls in the photo section.

I mainly get food from the major grocery store chains (Co-Op, Safeway,
occasionally Superstore), and two Asian markets -- Shun Fat on 17th
Ave. and Lucky Grocery -- both in Forest Lawn. I recently found a
source for whole rabbits coming from Lethbridge, which was exciting. I
try to stick to whole prey (chickens, rabbits, fish), and larger
chunks of beef, chicken, and pork. I'm always looking for new and
better sources of items like these. My wish-list includes green
tripe, and sources of lamb, mutton, and goat that won't break the bank.

I am relatively new-ish to the area myself. My husband and I moved to
Calgary from the U.S. in the summer of 2004 and spent a few months on
my in-laws acreage outside of Coaldale (between Lethbridge and Taber)
before moving to Calgary in November of 2004. These Yahoo groups have
been a great way to connect with other raw-feeders, and I look forward
to trying to get a group together here where we can connect with
others on a more local level.

Hi everyone I guess I should introduce myself as well.  My name is Lori and Terry and I often go in on orders of food (and dog walks) together.  I have a 3 year old lab cross named McBain and a 14 month old Vizsla named Loki.  I’ve been feeding raw for about 2 years now and I also do prey model.

I get most of my meat from a butcher that is near Torrington – he grinds whole chickens for me for $1.75/lb and ground beef + organs for 1.00/lb.  It’s fairly erratic when he delivers food to me but when he does its often topping 800 lbs!  I have two big deep freezes and a list of people I share with.  Anyone that wants to be on that list just let me know and I’ll e-mail when he makes a delivery.  Last time he also brought ground whole trout – but my dogs wouldn’t touch it!  Luckily other peoples dogs like it.

Good to have this list going – thanks for starting it Terry!  Everyone keep posting good deals on dog food.

Lori

I have 1 dog - a black lab named Guinness. He's been raw fed for 1.5
years now. I also started out making vegi slop but have now moved to
a prey model. Guinness won't even touch vegi's now. I get my meat
from various sources.

One source is Raw Riches (ladies name is Connie Riches)
criches@shaw.ca. She will email you a price list if you ask. Her
prices are quite good for Mountain Dog food.

I also get turkey necks another guy - who I don't have his contact
info at work. I will get it at home and post it later.

I'd love to have the contact info for the Rabbits if you can get me
that.

Here is my source for Turkey necks.  The prices are really good at $12/11 lbs.  He delivers for free if you order a certain $ amount.  I've also ordered a bulk case of beef bones, they weren't very meaty but were great recreational, or to up the % of bone in a all meat meal.

Thanks Anika. Did your dogs take to rabbit right away? Are they
picky, or do they eat everything you set in front of them? That is a
good price, definately wouldn't mind paying the delivery fee, Friday
afternoons are fine with me also.

I found a rabbitry in Lethbridge where one can get whole rabbits --
fur and all -- for $1.35/lb. The place is called J+M Rabbit Farms,
and is run by Jim and Margaret Oosterhof. I have only found them
recently, and bought six 2-pound rabbits (New Zealand Whites) for my
three girls. Their phone number is (403) 317-0330.

They come to Calgary once a week to supply Riverfront Aquarium with
feeder rabbits for reptiles, which is super convienent. They charge a
delivery fee for coming up here, after which the price is still quite
reasonable.

When my husband met her, it was at 5pm on a Friday, which is do-able
for us given that he usually gets off around 3, but might be not so
do-able for others if that's when they usually come up. I am willing
to coordinate an order and hold them until pick up is convienent for
any one who wants. Well, within reason. I only have a 7 cubic foot
freezer which is generally quite full. They come frozen solid and in
semi-warm weather they took about 2 days to defrost, so we can work
with that!

Hello,

My name is Ron and I have been feeding two of my four dogs a Raw Diet
for a relatively short time. (6 weeks) I have posted some pictures of
my dogs they are Kangals, the national breed of Turkey. They are both
under a year old.
We live on an acreage east of the city. I hope to share deals on food
when available as well as swap stories from a local perspective.
Ron
