Hi all,

After some sleep (both behind the wheel and at rest areas) I did make it home in one piece after dropping Karen's fish off and getting another 1 1/2 to 2 hrs of zzzz's.  All the fish survived better than I did.

I owe the club a big apology, after Karen looked at the metalic I did not think was mine, it was determined that in fact it was one of the sibling trio.  My deepest regrets for the problems I may have caused.

I was glad I made the trip.  You are a nice group and I hope you do host the Convention next year.

Every one take care and I will see you at the next go round, (hopefully with even some better fish).  I am watching some interesting fry developments right now.

Anxious to see the pics, not sure where they are posted however.

With great respect,
Dennis

Hi all,

I didn't have much time for photo taking this show, but here's a few
that I got:
http://picasaweb.google.com/102492910586301128533/CBSShowMay2010#

The video posted there isn't very good quality, so I'm uploading some to
YouTube which I'll post links to later.

Thanks to all the entrants for sending such wonderful fish! Congrats to
all the winners. And many thanks to CBS for such a great and
surprisingly relaxing show. The wine was excellent. :)

Links below or you can search "California Betta Society" on youtube. Be
sure to switch it up to 720p for better quality video (option is in the
lower right corner of the video near the full screen button). I took
about 40 short clips for the auction, some were better than others. I
uploaded some of the better ones.

Very awesome vids!! What a lot of work for you, and they were brilliant. That
was a great idea, and it definitely paid off. So nice to see the fish swimming
around -- better than pictures.

CBS needs to start funding your photography hobby. ;D

And lol, we need to start watching what we say around you when you're vidding.
;p

Thanks so much for this, and for uploading them so we can see them here!

How does one take good pictures of your fish? I just got a digital camera but
when I try to take pictures of my fish, they are blurry.

After seeing all of Christines beautiful photos and video, I think, I would like
to try to at least take pictures of my fish.

see if you can change the settings to a shorter exposure time? they're hard to photogragh no matter what you do though. you might get 1 good pic out of 20. also, i read an article that said natural light and using another fish instead of a mirror makes for a better pic

Hi Larissa,

It was somewhat terrifying as far as the trip home.  You might say God was looking after me.
I will probably fly next time, and you can count on me again.  Hopefully at next years Convention.  I am feeding and changing water for one more go at Convention in Indi.  I still have to pick up so extra points to get into the Top 20.  I will give it a shot.
Nice club and workers.

Always,
Dennis

Candace, who came down from Folsom with her daughter, reports that fish she bought at the auction have already spawned.

She's a CBS member, but hasn't received an invitation to join this group yet.  I'm sure she will have a lot of questions to ask the group...

Judy put a good article in the last newsletter about photography. The
simple answer is this: get a better camera. A DSLR will make things much
easier. Failing that, you need to learn how to use your current camera.
Find the macro setting, practice setting the auto focus, and get ready
to spend a LOT of time taking pics. Set up a photo tank and use external
lighting rather than a flash. Learn how to bounce the built in flash so
it doesn't obscure your target.

I've been taking fish pics and steadily upgrading my camera for the last
ten years. Most of it is just patience and trying different settings.
Learning how your fish behaves is helpful too. For bettas, watch for
them to drop their ventrals and take a pic right then. Usually they drop
their ventrals when they are going to sit still for a moment. Of course
if your camera doesnt focus quickly you wont have much luck. Limiting
their movement area with a photo tank or beanie box helps.

Hi Everyone,

We have decided on Garibaldis http://www.garibald isrestaurant. com/san_francisc o.html as our restaurant for dinner with Gene Lucas before he speaks at the joint SFAS/CBS meeting. Garibaldis serves very good California cuisine. It's less expensive AND less ethnic than our previous option, so I hope it suits everyone's tastes.  We'll be meeting there at 5:30pm on June 4th. I know it's early, but we'd like to have a relaxed dinner before the talk starts at 7pm.

If you're thinking of coming, let me know so I can ask for the right number of reserved spots. I hope lots of people can come!

I agreed with you Christine, i have a nikon D90 and a macro lens 50mm and somehow i prefer to use my old sony DSLR A100 using a lens 18-70. I took most of my betta pictures with that sony and it is working perfectly.
The few pairs you got from me last time, are you planning to breed them? If you have some fry from them, let me know.

Joseph, unfortunately I do not have any of the fish that I got from you anymore.  I got them in August of 2008 so that is almost 2 years ago.  I enjoyed your fish very much and tried breeding a couple pairs. One, the female killed the male and the other never spawned.   I also had an outbreak of a disease in my tanks and lost a lot of fish at that time.

Hello Karen, i am really sorry, the fish i mentioned  was the pairs Christine bought from me when they came in Sacramento.
Anyway i am sorry that the breeding didnt work out for you. It is happening sometimes the male will kill the female, probably because the female didnt want to spawn, that is why whenever you breed, it is always to have few extra females as back up.

I think I still have a purple butterfly plakat left. But he's almost double
tail. Not sure if I have a matching female left though. But I do have a few
females left from that spawn.

Hey guys,
I'm sorry I couldn't be there.
Kids have had bad infection the past two weeks & we're just getting past it. No longer contagious, YAY!!

Meanwhile...........

I am still struggling with health issues & am not having any luck placing my spawn from October.

I have 7 red/black lace males I really need to part with ASAP. Free is fine. So long as they have homes.
I'm doing just lousy at the "jarring" stage keeping up enough w/waterchanges.
My outdoor worm farm cracked (boo) and so that's gone for easy great feeding of them too.
I'm keeping 4 (at this point) from the Oct spawns.

I also have a very pretty royal blue/black/white marble from that spawn that wound up veiltail.
He's acting weird lately (lethargic) & while I love him, I'm not able to focus on what he needs to be healthy (aside from clean water & good food).
Can anyone take him?

I don't know that I'll do any more spawning at this point. I love raising the tiny fry, but clearly - not thriving at the jar & sell off stage.
(If any of you want to partner up that hate the spawn/tiny fry/microworm stage & do better at jarring - let me know....)

I am also hoping to sell my "big fish" in the 150 tank and do something else with that tank so I can maybe go down to 2-3 tanks in the house.
Plus have some extra equipment I'd really like to move. I feel myself shifting direction and needing to downsize even if my health picks back up.

I love life! I'm not depressed! And I love the friends I've made so far here, not bowing out completely at all!
But bummed I haven't been able to make meetings much lately and I'm just not managing all my fish like I was last year, at all.
Time to accept the "life shift" and move forward.

Come see what I have & make offers. Here's a partial list!
text 253-653-0555 for fastest reply

EQUIPMENT:
  • 60-Gal 5 x 2 x 2 sump EXCELLENT condition - just the sump $95 OBO
  • 4 10-Gal tanks 1 yr new light use (spawning/fry) $10 for just the tank or $25 w/heater, cover, sponge filter
  • 10-gal wooden tank STAND, black, holds 2 tanks, cute, exc cond $25
  • 40-gal tru-vu acrylic w/black back OLD, bows slightly in front, a few scratches, great for spawn grow-out $30
  • 2-gal hex acrylic tank w/small heater & light (new bulb!), very nice! $15
  • 1 Eclipse 10-gal hood w/out filter parts - bulb in GREAT shape 1 yr new - $50 OBO
  • about 50# (have to weigh) of great med-size lace rock, very pretty, $75 OBO ($4/lb+ in store)
  • abiout 20# of nice shale (rainbow) rock pieces, $20? OBO
  • Assorted abalone shells & coral pieces for decor, nice, $20? OBO
  • Assorted heaters & other decor, make offers
  • 2 new/never used "betta dividers" --thingy that suctions to front of tank & holds up to 4 bettas  $5/ea
  • Small filters 10-30G (have to look & see what's un-used in garage) $5-10 each?
  • OAK STAND & CANOPY, great cond, 60" x 18" holds 110-gal tank (tank is gone) $150 OBO
  • 37-G TALL glass tank 1 yr new no scratches etc $40 OBO (may have heater, air pump etc) no cover or light
  • LOTS of ARAGONITE SAND (used to be "live" can be again, just can't guarantee it is at this moment) 30-40# easy - $50?? OBO
  • at least 40# of FLOURITE natural planted tank gravel $50 OBO
  • at least 50# regular clean tank gravel, tan natural pebble, $25 OBO
  • assorted other odds & ends, decor, powerhead nozzles, etc.

**I also have a 50-G Tru-Vu clear-back acrylic running in the garage, but it has convict cichlids in it at the moment that I need to net out & donate to the store - unless - any of you actually want them. 5-6 adults - CAN be sexed M/F and separated so you won't get babies - they're quite pretty just - overproductive. 20+ 1" fry.
(I got them thinking my Oscars could eat the multitudes of fry, but they won't touch them! Silly Oscars - they won't eat guppies either. Only goldfish, which aren't good for them. Go figure....)
Once the fish are gone - $65? for the tank, $35 for heater, sponge filters, air pump, hang-on-back Penguin biowheel. $20 for 4' flourescent - takes 2 standard bulbs.
This is one I really don't *want* to part with, in case I do spawn and grow out again, but *SHOULD* so I don't fill it back up with more than I can care for. So - want a reasonable price but will take offers.

LIVESTOCK:
7 red/black lace HM males (free or donation accepted) spawned in October, have not been bred

2 - 8" albino Red Oscars $40/pair - prefer to keep together, they like each other & swim together.

8" REDTAIL Catfish $48 firm (which ALSO wouldn't eat the convict fry, boo)

2 - 5" Reg Jack Dempseys $10 each (may be a pair but I can't tell)

Adult Yo-Yo loach (all alone! anyone have a shoal?) $5

.............If I can sell these, I can upgrade my brackish tank (which I really LOVE doing) to the 150. And take down the smaller tank. Less to do.
Keeping 1-2 of my 10-gal setups "just in case" I change my mind on spawning down the line. But the rest - should go. You guys have first dibs, will put the rest on CL next week or so.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer!

well today when i was getting ready to leave the house, i caught my betta
mahachai spawning! i wasn't even sure i had the set up and water conditions
right. but if it's good enough to spawn in, then it should be ok right?
i think i have 1 male and 2 females. a few days after i brought them home from
the show the male started blowing bubbles in the little "nest spot" i made for
them. and let me just say, it is now the BIGGEST bubble nest i have ever seen.
oddly, he was spawning with the smaller, more weak female that has been having
swimbladder issues which made it a bit akward for them so i dont know how well
it went, but it makes me wonder if the other female is really a male. unless he
spawned her too and i just didn't catch it.

also, the girl with the swimbladder issue is now the 3rd female since i moved to
dads that was fine in the bag, but became "sinkers" as soon as they were
introduced to my water. does anyone have any idea why this could be? anything i
can do to get them back to normal? its deffinitely not overfeeding. unless i'm
conditioning or growing i only feed every other day

thanks!

thanks! i'll let you know if i have babies from this spawn or not :)

how do you care for yours? i have them in a half full 10 gal with lots of plants and the water is brackish, about half a teaspoon of salt per gal

and what about water changes? i'm kind of afraid of messing up the nest in case there's new eggs in there or something

lastly, are they still an endangered species?

thank you!
