Thanks so much for the information, Yvonne. I will try to contact Greg and see
what else I can learn about Fable.
He is similar to how you describe Geoff. I think he has been treated roughly
and this just wouldn't work with him. He responds to quiet, tactful handling. I
am soft spoken and a light, quiet dressage rider and he seems very relaxed with
me. He has a lot of dignity and I sense would try anything for you once he
trusts you. I am taking it slowly as I feel pretty sure he is worth it. He is
a special horse.
Thanks again
Kristin

Subject: [CanadianHorse] Petroski Riel Fable
Hi Kristen
Re Fable
I believe that he was originally bred by Willa Klyne, who at one time
owned/bred Canadian Horses in Manitoba. Unfortunately at that time (over a
decade ago) the market for Canadians in Manitoba was not good, plus she
lived in a fairly far out of the way place, so people were reluctant to go
look at her horses. She was quite discouraged by this and also ended up
having a young family and no time for the horses, and ultimately ended up
selling them all. They ended up going to a variety of places but as I
recall, the majority went to Greg Petroski and Will Oddie who were in
partnership at the time. I believe Fable was transferred over to Greg,
thus, if you check on the CLRC website, Greg is actually still listed as
being the owner of the horse, even though it is now many years (and
presumably several owners) later.
http://www.clrc. ca/cgi-bin/ pedigree. cgi?_breedcode= CI&_countrycode=
&_associa
tion=82&_regnumberp refix=&_regnumbe r=6856&_regnumbe rsuffix=
If the link does not work, go to the CLRC website:
http://www.clrc. ca/cgi-bin/ query.cgi? _association= 82
and enter the reg no of the Fable which is 6856
If you click on the link for "owner" it will take you to Greg's info. I
suggest that you contact him directly to get more info on the horse, as well
as on the horses parents as I believe that he owned both for a time. Not
sure if that email address will work, and as I recall, Greg was never
particularly great about doing the email thing : ), so if not, try giving
him a phone call. I am sure he would be happy to tell you whatever he
knows about the horse, although it will probably be regarding the early part
of his life..
FWIW, we actually owned Fable's half brother "Geoff" at one time as well
(also by Riel, out of another mare bred by the Prosperines and of similar
breeding to Fable's dam). Nice little bay horse - very obliging and nicely
forward, but not quite as quiet as some of the others that we have had.
Also quite "alert" with a tendency to look at things and not super brave or
bold (but certainly not stupidly spooky), and very honest and kind. And
always tried very hard to do whatever was asked of him. Liked a quiet, kind
and tactful rider - would never have done well with a really green rider or
with bullying or being punished as was a bit sensitive for that. Ultimately
we sold him on to a wonderful home in Rhode Island where he went to a
teenage girl who loves him dearly.
Good luck with your info search.

Hi,
I have recently had this amazing 13 year old gelding potentially come into
my life and would like to know more about him. He is of Viger Duc breeding
on both dam and sire sides and is 100% pure. He was apparently used for
dressage near Ottawa (North Gower) and suffered a fall of some kind and a
serious shoulder injury over a year ago.
A small farm near me (north of Kingston) "rescued" him and have gotten him
sound for pleasure riding and offered him to me. I am an experienced
dressage rider but now have kids and ponies on our family farm so need a
sane trustworthy horse. Fable is beyond what I could have hoped for--he
seems to have impeccable ground manners, is lovely to ride --responsive but
with plenty of stop in him-- and is of course, so beautiful. He also has
something special--presence, depth. After a lifetime of riding, this horse
has stolen my heart in a way I haven't experienced before. I am trying to
learn as much as I can about him and the breed to be sure I can give him the
forever home he deserves.
My finer instincts sense some trust issues in him and maybe I have ridden
too many Thoroughbreds but I keep waiting for some kind of explosion or
disaster. He is not spooky but is very "looky" and alert. I want to be sure
he is not carrying a bad history. Any information on him or his breeding,
or any other insights on this breed for a Canadian newbie, would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks,
Kristin
