Wow, a Canadian finished a 100M, very impressive!

Here in Manitoba we have a Canadian that competes in Endurance and
Competitive Trail. He is very good and seems to get better as the
weekend goes on. He tends to do Limited Distance rides but has done a
few bigger rides this season. If he does an LD he will ride both days
of a weekend, doing two 25M endurance or 20M CT rides. His owner is not
sure of his age; when she purchased him, she was told one age but it
looks like he is 4 years older if you go by his name. Unfortunately his
name is a best guess as she only knows the acronym of his name; SMAC.
The vets put him at 12-16 years of age. And still he impresses the ride
vets at every ride. Me too!

Jen

Only $5000?

If I didn't think he'd be snapped up before I got from Ontario to Quebec, I
might be completely interested!

Hi:

I Just had to share the great news! Lee Hutten (who works for us) went to South
Carolina for the 100 mile endurance ride. She met up with her two friends from
BC, Gayle and Elroy. Gayle was 1st, Elroy 2nd and Lee 3rd. Lee rode her mom's
horse. He was awesome, in great great shape.

This was our Philip's (our son) first time pit crewing. Sounds like he had a
good time. Lee will be home for a bit then off to Florida to ride for someone
else. You can read more about Lee's accomplishments
www.endurancecanada.ca/EquineCanadaNews

Lee was part of the Canadian Endurance Team that won Silver at the Endurance
Young Riders Championships in Indiana in July.
This competition was held in conjunction with the North American Junior and
Young Riders Championships.

We are so proud of her :) she is in her first year of college and still managing
everything. Her and her mom are quite the team.

The minute she comes back and walks into our barn and the horses hear her voice,
they will all start nickering. They love her too !! :)

Hi Everyone:

Plans are underway for Canada's National Horse Exhibition 2010. I am pleased
that four new people came on board to join the committee.
We now have Janet McDermid, Christine Gauthier, Christine Koch, Kelly Joyce and
myself (Pat). We will have many more participants so we will need more
volunteers. Sometimes we need letters translated, so perhaps you can help us out
there. Please contact me at cosyland@... if you might be interested.

The CNHE will take a new twist for 2010. The Saturday will be for Canadian
Horses and Sunday will be open to all breeds. You can't convert the converted,
so we figure if we bring in both participants and spectators from outside the
Canadian-horse community, we'll be able to show off our breed....so we will be
doing something special on the Sunday for Canadian horses during the open show.

We are currently looking at August trying to pick a weekend that works weather
wise - don't laugh, each year I plan it with the almanac and we don't want it to
conflict with other Ontario or Quebec shows. We had a good turn out from Quebec
members last year and we would like to encourage more. If anyone has some dates
for the major shows, could you please forward them to me. Shows in Quebec such
as St.Hy, Three Rivers etc.

Thanks
Pat Garland

Thanks for mentioning that Laurie! My mare, who is still rather green, has an
extremely thick forelock, and I've often wondered if I should try braiding her
forelock, or at least tying it up in a..."ponytail" - lol. She doesn't spook
like she used to, but perhaps I should get into the habit of tying up her
forelock for a while, to see if it makes a difference.

Very interesting - braiding the forelock cuts down on spooking. I wonder if
braiding the tail would cut down on kicking....just asking. ;-)

Hi All,

A number of the horses we sold this summer immediately went into training with
their new owners. One of the new owners had good success with training but the
mare would spook occasionally. Since the mare had a very thick forelock (all
our horses do) she tried braiding the forelock and the spooking stopped. The
owner said it was night and day once her vision was unobstructed. They are now
trail riding her. Once the mare has some milelage on her I don't think the
forelock will be an issue but while everything is new, it just helped that much
more to remove the unexpected.

Another colt we sold, same problem. He was fine on one side but spooked
occasionally on the other. I recommended they tried braiding his forelock and
again the problem cleared up.

Neither client plan to trim the forelock (thank goodness) but they will be
keeping it braided until the horses know what to expect and like I said have
some mileage on them.

It might just be coincidence but when training a young horse with a very thick
forelock it can't hurt to braid and remove that as a possible issue.

We have either heard from or visited all the horses that sold to new homes this
summer. It is satisfying to know they are well loved and well cared for.

HI Julie Hickie:
I just finished reading the story in the news letter about your foal.
Wow you were lucky in one instance that you had a mare willing to accept that
little one.
I speak from experience, as the same happened to me
My mare did live almost 24 hours, so Tres Canadienne, got her colostrum, but
after that it was every 2 hours for the first month and then 3 and I was so
happy when it got to be 3 times a day.
But you do what you have to do, and I am sure you would have too. I do not know
your age, but since you have a 2 year old, I guarantee it is much less than
mine. My baby is 28 and he was born just before I turned 40
You are lucky in another way, That Filly had a horse Mom to teach her to play by
the rules. I totally bottle fed Tres Canadienne and she thought I was her Mom. I
ended up taking her to my daughter in Alberta, We live in Michigan, No short
haul.?She was great on the trip. Yes, something else we did just the 2 of us,
but now, she doesn't seem to know the ways of a horse..
Does any one have any ideas on how to teach a bottle fed baby to respect humans
who are not there to feed her.
Thanks
Pauline

While the horse was very thin -he did not starve to death.

They strung the poor horse up from the bucket of an excavator with a rope around
his neck and hung him to death.

This is such a horrible thing to happen! Maybe if enough people are there for
the hearing, they will change these toothless animal cruelty laws... $10,000
and 5 years is a joke for a man of his wealth. I'd like to go to Victoria for
this and can have room for 4 others if anyone else wants to go. We'd have to
leave by 6am. Among other things I'd want to know why the SPCA didn't remove
these horses and/or check up to see that their previous orders had been
followed... I feel for the neighbour as it must be an awful f****g thing to
watch a horse starve to death even after contacting authorities.

Sherry

stallion on his first hunt this year. One of our barn workers, Sarah , who is an
event rider wasn't able to take her competition horse so we decided she would
take Monty's daughter - 4 yo Red Pepper out for her first experience. Little
Red had been on several trail rides and is a full year under saddle but had only
been off the farm once for two weeks of driving training in June, so this was
her first activity with lots of horses(about 50), noisy hounds etc. She has
never been shown but Sarah is a good rider nad had been working wiht her for
several weeks so we both decided it would be a good experience.

a gallop after the hounds baying after the scent. The "hilltop" group follows at
a slower pace and usually consists of green horses and riders, kids and
basically anyone just along for the ride. The hilltop group is usually where
mishaps occur as well since riders have trouble controlling their horses and
keeping them from charging off after the front group.

entering the forest trails. We waited for the riders to remount and headed out
again each time. Then- a young neighbour of mine (nine-yr old tiny Mackenzie)
came off for a second time right in front of Monty and me.

senior riders in the group but this time, I dismounted, held on to Monty while I
caught the little quarterhorse gelding and let MacKenzie get up. She was in
tears but not hurt, actually a very good rider for her age but the little gelding
was wild eyed and clearly unrideable. A senior rider who was also having trouble
with her horse came up and offered to walk back to the barns with Mackenzie and
call it a day. The little girl didn't want to go back. While holding the gelding
and Monty I looked behind me and there standing quietly was Red Pepper with
Sarah.

sport, a confident rider and she said "sure"

young but if she stayed close to she'd be fine. Meanwhile, Sarah shortened the
stirrups as high as possible, lowered the one's on the gelding's child saddle
and both girls got mounted and off we went into the forest trails.

> Well,. REd Pepper was the star of the day. She carried that little girl up and
down the mountain, through water, over bridges in a pack of 20 plus horse for 2

had a couple canters just off in front of me with the slightly older girls.

so much as a hesitation.

How wonderful, Betty. Please give both Monty and Red Pepper an extra
carrot for me. And Congrats to you for participating and for your
ingenuity.

What a great story Betty!

I always thought quarterhorses were "quiet" (compared to the Thoroughbreds I've
owned, I guess), but since getting Sahara 2 months ago (a 3 year old Canadian
bred by Betty and Judy) I have a whole new definition of quiet. As with Red
Pepper, he continues to surprise me in the things he takes in stride (especially
for a young horse) - I'm more jumpy than him as I keep expecting him to respond
like other horses! I am loving that he doesn't get "set off" after something
does startle him - other horses would dance for a while and be on their toes
after getting scared of something (like the quarterhorse in the story), but he
returns to walking on a loose rein in no time.

Such a remarkable breed - I'm so glad that others in the horse world are
witnessing these great attributes as well.

Alana, proud new owner of a Canadian
