Dear Ruth,

some houghts, late in the night!
But first, tanks for your lovely resonse!

I am not sure that cats do not see colours.
On the other hand, I think they do - wherever from ( a mirror) know how they
look like and accept cats, looking similar to them more than others.

1. Example:
I have kittens born on 6. july 99, 5 red silver ones, one red tabby. the red
tabby girl is really the underdog. one one likes her. I think, it's just
because she does not look like the others.
But that strengenth her: she is a sweet little amazone.

2. example:
I had 2 tabbies with white ( in the face), and I had to give them away because
they - although they stayed before the other cats came/were born in our home -
were attacked by the tabbies without white.
I was wondering about, because both of them were friendly cats without no
aggressions at all.
But then I read - cannot remind where, that the white blotches in the face of
cats could bring aggressions from non-white cats.
Maybe it is right - Abilene, my only left blue-tabby /white cat with a white
feather in the face has a really bad life if she dares to be too visible in the
"open area".
She is very safe in the bathroom and propably safe in our sleeping room, but
outside of that...
Even my baby-boy attacks her, and hes so lovely, a realmaiden to the kittens i
spoke of above.

So much for today. ( still 5 hours to sleep for me!!)
I was wondering, if I should better send it to your private mail, but if there
is not so much mailing in the list,
perhaps some people will join us,after having looked in the digests.

I hope to hear from you and perhaps other people!

Viktoria

Hi, Viktoria! Welcome to the list! (I only joined it myself this past
spring, and I have no idea who owns or takes care of it.)

I'm so happy to hear you breed Maine Coon cats. Our oldest cat, Barny, looks
just like a miniature Maine Coon--all the markings and other physical
characteristics, except he is so *small!* He is only 8 pounds. He is about
19 years old, and you would think he would be acting elderly. But he still
likes to keep the younger cats in line by slapping their faces on occasion!
(I have known him to pin a younger--and much heavier--cat to the floor when
they did something of which he didn't approve; though I haven't seen him do
*that* for a while!)

Cat behavior is a very interesting subject to me, too. We also have a large
feline family: 7 neutered males and 2 neutered females--all of different
mixed breeds and all rescued from less-than-happy situations. (Mostly one at
a time, accumulating over the years--we didn't *plan* to have this many
cats! <g>)

For the most part, they get along very well together. Two of them are very
good "mixers"--they get along very well with everybody, and have an open,
friendly attitude. One of these, Quincy, has formed a special bond with
Twinkles, who is a year older than he is, and whom we found several hundred
miles away. But their bond was practically *instant*! Within a week they
were sleeping with their paws around each other, tumbling with and chasing
each other, eating out of the same bowl, groomin each other....

But Quincy's brother, Reginald, could not be more different in personality.
I could write at great length about him, but I think we have some real
issues we are going to have to deal with. There is some animosity
particularly between him and Whiskers (in large part, I think, because
Whiskers associates him with another cat whom he intensely dislikes).

But my question is, How much does physical appearance play a part in the
bonding/non-bonding that takes place among cats? If you took away the
element of color (am I right in thinking that cats don't see in color?)
Quincy and Twinkles would look almost exactly alike. Is this why they took
an immediate liking to each other? And if physical appearance plays a large
role, would the group dynamics of my feline household be essentially
different from the dynamics in yours (since yours are all the same breed?)

Just an interesting thought.... Sorry for the long post!

Hi out there,
my name is Viktoria. Me and my husband live near Nuremberg in Germany and we
breed Maine coon since 1996.
We joined the list, because we like to get in contact with people concerned with
behaviour science of cats.
Just now we have 2 boys, 4 ladies, 1 neuetered girl and a bundle of 10 kitten,
aged 13 to 15 weeks!
Believe me, much to see in cat behaviour and much to wonder and think about.
No one is caged, just Anilene has to be seperated from time to time in the
sleeping- and bathroom area. They all live together with us in a big flat with 2
floors.

As I saw in the digest, there is not much frequency on this list.

I hope it will change.
Or is the list not working any longer?

I would be happy about information.

By the way - what happened to the awful boys who mistreated Dunkin to death??
I cannot believe such a cruelty!

VILLAGE MAYOR BEATS PUPPY TO DEATH WITH A SHOVEL-SAYS HE BARKED TOO MUCH
James "Cookie" Cook, village president (mayor) of Milford, IL,
doesn't
like puppies who bark. When Snoopy, a six-month old registered beagle
came
around the grain elevator where Cook was working and started barking,
Cook
picked up a shovel and beat the puppy to death. Cook faces a hearing
September 22 at 9:30 at the Iroquois County courthouse. He is charged
with
a misdemeanor. Cook is so confident he will not be sentenced he is not
even hiring an attorney. Perhaps he is right. Iroquois County is an old

farm county and the good-ol-boys take care of their own.
Cook claims he had to hit the dog with a shovel because he didn't
want
to put his hands in danger by getting near a stray. Either the man is
incredibly stupid by not realizing Snoopy was a puppy (and a small one at

that), or he is incredibly dangerous in that his first reaction to a
bothersome situation was violence.
Cook hasn't a clue he did anything wrong. "Anyone would have done the

same thing." he told a news reporter "It's a crock of_______. All
these
drug people doing drugs in the county and they complain about me being
cruel to animals." He sees nothing wrong with his act of violence.
We are very concerned about how vigorously Cook will be
prosecuted. Iroquois county officials stick together. Furthermore, the
county has a questionable history regarding animals. There has long been

rumors that animal control Garner sells cats and dogs to research. The
man
lives on a farm away from the prying eyes of the public but people insist

they have seen trucks going to his place in the late night hours. When
Garner's facility was visited by Illinois humane investigators a few
years
ago, the sheriff, who was customarily notified by the humane officer,
alerted Garner who jumped in his truck and took off before the
investigator
could get there (I was along on that raid.) Good-ol-boys in action.
We are afraid that the state's attorney and judge will dismiss this
case and a man who has demonstrated he is prone to violence will
walk. Cook will argue he first hit the dog to get rid of him, but hit
him
too hard and killed him to put him out of his misery. What the poor
fellow
is incapable of understanding is that the dog shouldn't have been hit at
all. This was a wanton and callous act of violence against a puppy who
was
just being a puppy.
Please call or write the state's attorney and ask that he take the Cook
case seriously. Point out the violence connection and that a normal
person
would not automatically react to a situation with violence. Tell him you
hope the fact that Cook is an elected official will not mean he will get
away with breaking the law.

Hey!
Hope you guys don't mind me sending this...I just consider so many of you

friends, who might appreciate making extra money, like I do!
I just became a member of GoToWorld.com. It's a search engine and
community like AOL, but pays me money to use their browser!
It's completely legit, so I want to share this with you.
They gave me a bunch of software downloads for free!!
The browser also has all these plug-in for MP3s, Internet Radio stations,

and TV. I even downloaded an editor that lets me type in different
languages.
All this for free and I get paid on top of it! You really have to check
it out!!
All I have to do is use their browser which has an advertising bar on
it. The
bar can be turned on or off, and when it's on I get paid money to surf
the Web
(which I do any way!!). You can download your copy of the browser and

Thanks for responding. Unfortunately, I don't have a
copy of the original letter I posted.

My cats are soooo brilliant, they sit on cue, speak on
cue, one says mama and means it, they fetch, they come
to their individual names. I don't understand why
they just can't stop spraying. I did try putting them
in the litter box every half hour and praise them,
that didn't work. What is most funny, today while in
the bathroom with my "jailbirds" the one I did that
with kept going into the litter box and coming out
again just to please me. She knew that what was going
on had to do with that.

I did see the clicker training list. I'll get on it.

Goodmorning Kimi,
I have never seen any message answered on this list by Isabel,
only myself and I think I've been on this list about 6 months. Sorry.

However, I have just started a list devoted to something that might
help you. You have done all the right things, with medicalchecks and
cleaning. You have probably tried scolding, but that rarely works
with a cat. If you would like to try training them in a kind, gently
and fun way sign up on the cat-clicker list at Onelist. I know there
is one person there who has already been helped with my suggestions on
this problem. She hasn't even started clicker training the offender
but has started rewarding big time. She puts the cat in the litter
several times a day and praises. If they happen to potty she rewards
with major good treats. Training a few other easy behaviors like
target training and sit on cue would really round out her problem
kitties repertoire of rewarded behaviors. Clicker training gives the
cat quality time, improves their behavior in many ways as a side
benefit to learning to learn. Cats are very smart. I think they
enjoy the opportunity to learn and be creative.

I doubt you are going to have the same results just by putting cats in
the box and rewarding as it sounds like you have a MAJOR problem with
several cats. If you can spend five minutes a day with each cat, and
would like to give it a try please sign on to cat-clicker and resend
the same message I just read.

Have clicker - will travel

hello, I'm Kimi and I have 7 indoor only cats and
occasionally foster bottle feeders for my local rescue
organization. My cats are brilliant, have all their
claws, are fixed, have many, many scratching posts of
all sizes and live a good life. I work at home so I'm
theirs, even though I do daycare, the babies are the
non-mobile variety. About 3 years ago, I babysat 2
kittens for a friend. Ever since then, my house has
been in upset. They were only with us for ten days,
but mine started spraying and picking on each other,
particularly Max tormenting Sunshine. Both were born
and raised in this house! Sunshine is 8 weeks older
than Max.

In the past year, the spraying is unbearable. I've
had the carpets changed, I'm a wiz a cleaning the
urine out and treating it. I've done just about
everything, I've called Kate Gamble, cat behavior
specialist, tin foil, vet exams, food in favorite
marking spots, new toys, litter, boxes, Feliway
etc....What I haven't tried is medications, electronic
gizmos and super serious restriction to a cage. I've
restricted them to a room, the bathroom before, but
only for three days.

What I'm thinking is this: I need to build a cat
condo or acquire one inexpensively, say under $50
(please don't laugh, these cats are going to bankrupt
me in carpet enzymatic cleaners alone). Then I need
to learn how to retrain my cats to 1) Use the
litterbox for all urinating, 2) Help them to establish
their hierarchy so that Sunshine can go to the
litterbox and use it and not have Max waiting for her
to come out so he can terrorize her, 3) They need to
quite urinating on my daycare babies' things. I cover
the cribs with grates and lately, they've just sat on
the grate and gone potty down into the bed! 4) They
need to get it that I'm the Alphacat! If I sew, they
may not spray on my sewing stuff, especially my
machine! If I play the piano, they cannot spray on my
piano! If I put a kid in the highchair, they cannot
spray on my kitchen table and the highchair!

All I know is that when I did daycare for the kid of a
vet, she told me that she would have given up by now,
and she has a ton of tolerance! I know that if I gave
these guys to a new home, they would be put down in a
week, so that's not an option. If I thought they
would stop it and be happier with a new home, I'd do
it, but I just don't know how to tell.

I plan on going to Home Depot tomorrow and looking at
construction materials for my cat condo. Next, do I
put the three guilty ones in it together? Or do I
keep them very separated?

Please help me before I abandon my home to my cats and
go off the deep end. I would love to wake up just
once and not find cat urine outside the litter box!

Kimi

Ha Ha. Smart cat. How about using DEEP water? Wet paws might be
acceptable to kitty but three inches deep might not.

I appreciate your response, Wendy.
I went right in and tried using some very large cookie sheets with water
in them. Hermes jumped over the first one, so I got another larger one
and placed them side by side. He assessed the situation and deftly
leaped over the water to the edge of the dog door and pushed his way out
with one swift motion.................Then turned to see me watching
through the window.
Popoki watched all this and is still sitting near the door, staring at
the water.
So, I shall be looking for the (no doubt expensive) dog door with the
special signal collar.
Hopefully, it comes with a collar small enough for a Chihuahua!
Thanks again for all the advice.
Lori

Hi Lori,

I don't know what is going on with this list. 'Isabel' seems to be
missing in action, as I have never seen a single post with an answer,
but I can give you my two cents worth being a general all round animal
trainer.

Cats learn quite well by watching. Yours have been rewarded several
times now for going through the door. Going outside is FUN for a cat
so now you have a well established behavior. I'ld say the only chance
you had of keeping them from it would have been if you had applied an
aversive stimuli (like a squirt gun) the very first time they tried
it. Now is too late in my estimation. Even then, I think a cat is
smart enough to figure out that only happens when YOU are around. I
don't like training animals through punishment anyway. The ONLY thing
I can think of would be put a LARGE pan of water in front of the
doggie door. Teach the dogs to walk through it to get outside and
hope your cats don't like outside enough to overcome their dislike of
the water.

Other than that, I have seen advertisement for a door that only opens
if the animal is wearing a collar which give off the signal to unlock.
That was undoubtedly designed for this problem. I've never tried it
though.

Hello,
I am new to this list. My name is Lori and I'm
owned by two (neutered) cats, Popoki and Hermes.
I also have two Siberian Huskies and a Chihuahua.
I have recently moved and installed a dog door
in the new house so the dogs can get to the back
yard. Now, my cats have learned to use the dog
door and absolutely LOVE it! They've been going
out for two days and lay around on the carport
and catch bugs in the grass. However, I don't
want them to go outside at all. They've only
ever been on a private deck. They are not
vaccinated for Lukemia and have no flea
protection (yet). More importantly, I don't want
them to get into contact with stray cats or get
hit by a car etc. Is there any way I can train
them not to go through the dog door? If not,
I will need to get them vaccinated for Lukemia
(but I heard that is no guarantee) and get some
flea protection....also I suppose they'll need
heartworm protection too?
The best thing would be to find a way to train
them not to use the dog door. But how??
Thanks for any advice.
Lori

I had 3 dogs and 5 cats, all indoor. All neutered. All living basically
happily together. Until Halloween night last year. A cat almost got hit by
a car in front of my house while passing out treats. I grabbed her, kept
her on our front porch until all medical procedures could be done. She
received her Feleuk test, all vaccinations, and spaying/front declaw (I
know - no flames please). From the get go, she was very very loving, but
very hateful towards the other cats. I figured with time, things would get
better. We'll, unfortunately they haven't. Over six months later, she is
still provoking fights with the other cats, and within the past month, has
taken to spraying. This is not squatting, this is spraying. Usually in the
bathtub or bathroom sink, but has gone on the carpeting. I physically bring
her to the litterbox (we have six of them, different types of litter, some
covered, all scooped daily) at least three times a day, gently deposit her
in there, and praise her to no end when she urinates in it (btw: is using
the litterbox for defacating). I am planning on bringing in at the least a
urine sample, but because of the spraying posture, I don't believe it is a
medical problem. After talking to my vet's office, only Ovaban was
suggested. This is something I would like to stay away from, but may
consider if nothing else helps. I have never caught her "in the act".
Background on me: I have worked as a veterinary technician for almost ten
years, have had cats for many, many years, and have been very active in cat
counseling. But now I need the help! I am wondering if anyone has any
suggestions for this girl. She is approximately one year old. I am the
type of person that believes that pets are a lifetime committment. Because
of her declaw and my own personal beliefs, I could not make her an outdoor
cat. That is just not an option in my book.

Thanking you in advance. Private replies are welcome: keywest@...
