Several of you have written me emails about Ginger and Max and I
want to thank you again for your thoughtfulness and prayers. I
cherish each one.
I brought Maxie home last Tuesday and he is still with me.
Apparently, he has a liver infection, which the vet says takes a
long time to recover. I threatened a couple of times to take
him back to the vet and called them because he is not regularly
eating on his own yet or nearly enough and has had some ups and
downs, but I am managing to feed him with a syringe and get his
antibiotics down. He's not holding it against me, so far, so I
think it is less stressful for him to be at home. Today is an
"up" day. Whoo! Hoo!
Fortunately, my cats haven't taught me the last lesson of this
week's Mewsings.
June is "Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat" Month. Following Mewsings, is a
sweet message from Patrick McDonnell, of MUTTS, about the event.
Cat Nips has a story with follow-up from last July that will
gratify and horrify you at the same time about the near fate of
800 cats in China. I can't even think about the dear ones that
are not saved.
At The Tail End is a link to a video of an irate mockingbird,
but Precious is not to be bothered.
Hope you enjoy!
Take care, have a great week, and kiss your kitties for me!

This kitty could be Maxie's identical twin, except Max is a bit
fluffier:

Everything I know I learned from my cat: When you're hungry,

Chinese Feline Lovers Block Truck Taking Cats to Restaurants
Chinese cat lovers mobilized online to save a truck load of cats
from the cooking pot, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.
Veteran Shanghai cat rescuer Duo Zirong started off her mission
of deliverance on Friday when she called police to stop a truck
stuffed with some 800 live cats, the China Daily said.
The standoff happened at a parking lot in a southern suburb of
Shanghai. It continued for hours while cat lovers spread word
of the incident online, eventually raising 10,000 yuan $1,320 in
donations to buy the whole load.
They now hope to place them in homes after posting their
pictures and profiles on the internet.
"They were so frightened," it quoted one of the rescuers, Huo
Puyang, as saying.
"Some bit people when they tried to let them out of the boxes.
"Some still hide in dark corners and will not come out for
food," Huo said. Cat meat is considered a delicacy in southern
China and cats are sold live to markets where they are
slaughtered fresh for customers.

New Home Planned for Cats
Cat lovers in Shanghai are preparing to rent a house in the
city's suburbs for the street cats, after more than 800 cats
were rescued last week from a truck to Guangdong Province.
The www.movshow.com, a Chinese cat Website, initiated the move
and said the house will provide a more spacious home for street
cats.
"The house was originally a factory, and the rental is about
2,000 yuan (US$258) a month," said Tao Rongfang, an official
with the Shanghai Animal Protection Association.
"Volunteers and vets will go to the house to take care of the
cats and sterilize them."
Up to now, more than 30,000 yuan has been collected from net
buddies for the rent and for living and medical expenditure for
the street cats.
Duo Zirong, last week's cat rescuer, who has more than 1,200
street cats at her home, will visit the house at the weekend,
before deciding whether to move her cats there.
Net buddies are also considering building a cat medical center
and an adoption center in the downtown area.

That's One Laid-Back Cat
It's that time of year when we have baby birds and their moms
and dads are protecting the nests. Actually, where I live, we
are having the second set of babies due to a very early spring.
I watched a Cardinal build her nest outside my home office
window last week, a very nice respite from my troubles. She has
quit feeding her first baby, but it keeps following her around
anyway in hopes of getting an easy meal.
This is a link to a video of a mockingbird that obviously has
some little ones in a nest nearby, but Precious is not going to
let a mere bird "ruffle her feathers."
