if I'm honest, I'm scared poopless of putting them on. I can't even put hoof
dressing on him. He lets me pick them though (weirdo). I really want him
barefoot eventually. My mare is barefoot and I love it that way. Who wants to
spend more than $100/mo. on shoes for one horse?! Every time I take his shoes
off, Gabe goes lame until they're back on. I'm really hoping they'll improve
with proper nutrition. I've been researching some homemade licks. Maybe after
a few months of that we can lose the shoes. For now, I think I'm going to have
to get rid of the hind shoes, lame or not. Temporary lameness from bad feet is
a lot easier to deal with than permanent damage because he put his foot through
a wall. Thanks again, Kinni

This is a bit late...but, here it is anyway...I had a black mare that wasn't
fond of having her feet handled. We had always been in an area w relatively
soft ground...we moved to a new state in a rocky area. She immediately got
laminitus. I was all in a dither about what to do...I ordered Old Mac boots for
the fronts...paid for expidited shipping and put them on her. I had a little
trouble getting them on due to her "foot shyness".
She responded immediatly - was walking entirely normally. More to your
point...she didn't want me to take them OFF - not because of her foot
shyness..because she wanted them left ON. No kidding! And, she never acted up
putting them on...she wanted them on! I did this for many weeks until she no
longer needed them.

If the hoof wall is off the ground you're less likely to have soreness. It's important if the sole has dropped that no one touches it with a hoof knife. If...
