I'm glad someone is pursuing this topic.
I realize I am not doing official "clicker" with targeting or shaping per se. I
also don't use the official clicker sound, but just a "good boy". So already I'm
failing at clicker officially 2 ways.
Third way is that I do give my guys treats. When I go out to say hi, then I
frequently present a treat to them while saying their name and give them a rub
too. This was planned and the way I got them to understand their names with us
saying them.
There are many times that I give treats. I'm not sure if it counts as a form of
reward training to give a treat if they are standing quietly or back up or come
way over to greet me.
I'm not sure what counts as "clicker" and what counts as just giving a treat for
nothing. Is it so bad to give a treat for nothing? Does this completely take
away using treats for a response?
I think that horses are smart enough to tell the difference.
I was also using treat to encourage a "whoa" under saddle. Was funny when we
were in a parade and Bangsi had to stop because of other horses jammed up. He
turned around and mouthed as if to say "Ok, I stopped. Where's my treat!" LOL!
He was going to clicker train me!
