Hi! I was last w/this group in 2002. Maggie and her brother tragically
ran away the nite of 4/5/04. Jack, the Angel Dog has been helping us
recover. I am just now coming to terms w/the fact that they are not
coming back.
You contacted me at a time when I was already looking for another dog.
Now I am thinking that I am ready for another deaf dog. I have looked
at the Deaf Dogs rescue web site and made a couple of contacts.
Any deaf dogs locally? Jack is a border collie mix and likes to herd.
I was thinking ACD or Aussie or Jack Russell or Sheltie and of course
mixes thereof. One breeder in Idaho has a Jack Russell puppy that she
will keep w/the mother for 4 more weeks and then wants to SHIP the
dog. Is this OK for a deaf dog? It would seem to be a really
terrifying thing for this deaf puppy and I would like some input as
she sounds great otherwise. Sorry to be so wordy...any comments are
appreciated. Pattie
Teddy and I have not explored agility yet. My schedule is very chaotic right now so there just isn't time. We did start a Canine Good Citizen class not to long ago but dropped out shortly after beginning - Teddy was so not interested and I was not overly impressed by the trainer. That will teach me to use someone other than Kris! LOL
I think it would be great to have some equipment set up. I would love to see how Teddy would react to the equipment if he had a chance to "play". I really don't want to put him into agility if he has absolutely no interest in doing it.
I have not been to the park to check it out yet. I will try to get over there in the next couple of weeks. Did you ever get over to the Grampsas site? They have an off leash park there as well as picnic areas.
I will post some pics of Teddy as soon as I can. Don't have many recent pics of myself but I'll see what I can come up with.
Sorry I can't offer more in the way of help but I'm stretched pretty thin right now. I went back to school this summer so I'm in school full time, working part time and trying to keep up with my Avon business. Ugh! No wonder I'm so tired. LOL
Anyway, I'll see you in October. Better go see what Teddy is doing (I brought him to work today and he's making his rounds).

Hi Lynda,
Don't know how you can train those puppies and let them go. I
would be training them to fail so I could keep them. Smile. The
gathering is October 9th. If you go the Calendar on the yahoo web
site, it has the info there. Please feel free to bring your trainee

If you are in need of someone farther north, Kris Weckerling at Pet Peeves is great as well. This is who Teddy and I have trained with and we love him. He is at 52nd and Indiana, his number is 303-216-1930. Like Eric, he loves the dogs and really understands them.
Whoever you decide to go with I highly recommend interviewing them and getting references. I tried to put Teddy in another training class with another trainer (who knows where she got her training?) but I didn't interview her (she was a friend at the time) and I didn't ask for references. Needless to say I wasn't impressed and Teddy did not respond well to the training. We ended up dropping out of the class and I was out a lot of money because she would not give us a refund for the uncompleted portion of the class.
Good luck in your search for a trainer.

My co-workers do that all the time. I used to work with a guy who would clap his hands behind Teddy's head. More recently one of my co-workers said Teddy's name and Teddy coincidentally looked at him shortly after so my co-worker kept telling me he could hear. I tried to explain to him that it was likely that Teddy saw something out of the corner of his eye but he didn't want to believe me and proceeded to try to argue with me about the issue. Excuse me, I have lived with this dog for a few years now I think I'd know if he could hear even the slightest noise! He sleeps right through fireworks, thunderstorms, the doorbell, etc. It's almost as if people don't want to believe that our wonderful babies could be deaf. Drives me nuts! This is part of the reason that I don't tell people Teddy is deaf unless it is absolutely necessary. If someone is going to be interacting with him on a regular basis then they are
usually told but if it's someone in passing (like the dog park) then I just don't say anything and make them believe that he is just trained on hand signals.

Hi all,
First off I want to thank Rhonda for the invitation to join the
group! I was just thinking of you, Zap and Champ the other day!
OK, now on to the intro. My name is Kinsey and I share my home and my
life with Teddy, an Australian Shepard/Smooth Collie Mix who is about
2 1/2 or 3 years old. Teddy came to me from Ohio almost two years ago
(I think - feels like forever - in a good way), he was born
bilaterally deaf and is the best dog that I've ever had.
We are looking forward to meeting everyone in October.
Have a great day!
