Subject: Penn and Teller attack PETA

This is to alert you to turn on your TV Thursday at 10 P.M. EST
for the Penn and Teller show. They will go after PETA.
Let all your friends know, especially non-dog friends.
Taking the bull by the ... horns?    Tom Jicha

March 28, 2004

America has a reputation for cynicism that is undeserved:
It's amazing how much nonsense we accept unquestioningly.
The wildly inventive Penn & Teller prefer a more vulgar term
for nonsense. They call it Bull----! They've made it the
title of their Showtime series, which on Thursday launches
its second season of debunking ... nonsense.

Some of the episodes are fairly frivolous, such as upcoming shows
on people's unreasonable fears -- you'll never be freaked out by
a public toilet again -- and the ridiculous lengths singles go to
in pursuit of a mate.

But the first target of the new season is a serious one:
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
The touchy-feely name is only the start of the organization's ...
nonsense, Penn & Teller argue. Of course, Penn does all the talking.
Teller is the Harpo Marx of this act.

PETA's mission statement is that it doesn't want animals to be killed,
hurt, exploited or embarrassed. These are laudable goals within reason,
which PETA rarely is. If PETA had its way, Penn notes, everyone would
have to become vegans; shoes would be made of something other than leather;
rodeos and circuses would be eliminated, as would horse and dog racing.
Fishing wouldn't be allowed, zoos would be closed and harvesting honey
would end, because this is an exploitation of bees.

Any medical research involving animals, even if it meant cures for
AIDS and cancer, would cease. PETA would not even approve of guide dogs
for the blind, again an exploitation of animals in its warped thinking.
Despite the first three letters of its name, there would be no pets,
because this amounts to slavery, according to Ingrid Newkirk, PETA's
founder and president.

The latter contention is one of the reasons for the program, Penn explains.
Many pet owners are donors to PETA, unaware of its extremist agenda.

They are also oblivious to the fact that the money they think they are
donating toward the welfare of animals goes to support arson and bombing of
buildings and other terrorist acts, according to Penn. These allegations are
documented through tax returns and admissions from PETA officials and a
confessed felon whose activities have been underwritten by the group.

Penn displays PETA ads that show emaciated Holocaust victims and
mass graves next to similar images of animals. PETA officials vehemently
argue there is no difference.

Rocker Ted Nugent, an outspoken advocate of hunting and an avowed opponent
of PETA, says his children's lives have been threatened by people who say
they are affiliated with PETA.

The head of the Los Angeles animal shelter, which boasts of rescuing 63,000
animals a year, has also been targeted. Jerry Greenwalt says his house and
car have been vandalized by people representing themselves as being from
PETA; his wife had a heart attack after one of these incidents, he adds.

Penn derides PETA's aspiration to unconditionally liberate these animals.
With freedom comes responsibilities, he says. The purpose of liberation
would be defeated because there would have to be animal jails for creatures
that kill other creatures, as they inevitably would, as well as lesser
offenses, such as defecating in the street.

Rodney Coronado, who has received at least $42,500 in support from PETA,
according to tax returns, is seen showing college students how to make a
Molotov cocktail. Coronado has admitted to bombing a Michigan State research
laboratory and pleaded guilty to six other acts of arson, Penn says.

PETA's conduct is so outrageous, it inspired Teller to break his silence
during the midseason press tour.

"I was deeply shocked by the degree of violence that's linked to PETA. I
knew that they cared more about anthropomorphizing rats than they did about
the welfare of humanity, but I didn't know the degree to which they bombed
buildings."

In all likelihood, neither do many Americans who write checks to PETA,
thinking they are supporting a group like more mainstream and responsible
animal welfare organizations such as the ASPCA and the Humane Society. .

This is why the program is not only entertaining but a public service.
And that's no bull.

Background IDITAROD Story

NOTE:Animals In Print is fortunate and proud to have
Margery Glickman as a staff member
---------------------------------------------------------------
Victims of cold, fatigue and greed

By Bod Padecky
Press Democrat
March 20, 2004

A dog is there for the taking. He can't talk back. He can't say, stop, you're
killing me, you're treating me like a dog. Six years ago, Margery Glickman
happened upon a couple of hundred dogs that, if they could have spoken, would
have said just that.

Glickman was vacationing in Alaska. She came for the scenery but saw instead
a "dog farm." Animals were tethered to stakes by chains, belligerent in their
confinement, drinking filthy water, sitting, as she said, "in their own fecal
matter." This was a breeding place for the Iditarod. Glickman was perplexed.

Even back home in Miami, Glickman had heard of the Iditarod. It was a
1,149-mile dog sled race in the middle of winter across Alaska. Designed to
commemorate the diphtheria run that saved lives in 1925, the Iditarod had become
romantic legend, courageous mushers crossing forests, rivers, tundra and
mountain
ranges with enthusiastic canines. What glory! Ah, but where was the glory in
this?

"I was appalled," she said.

Glickman had never been an activist in her life. She was a first-grade
teacher. She was a mom. She was in Alaska to relax. Problem was, she couldn't.

"Of 300 dogs on a dog farm," Glickman said, "five might be judged good enough
to run in the Iditarod. The rest? Most of them would be culled."

They would be killed, by clubs, by gunshot, by being dragged to death in
harness. Some were skinned for parkas and mittens. Her indignation grew in
direct
proportion to her curiosity. Glickman found dogs working on exercise wheels,
like hamsters. She found dogs with muscle tears, raw paws, hypothermia,
dislocated joints, penile frostbite, fluid in legs and lungs.

The 32nd running of the Iditarod concludes this weekend, and though records
weren't kept for the first 10 years of the race, Glickman now has counted 122
dogs who have died during the last 22 years. She was not alone in her disgust.

"With a buildup of lactic acid and other chemicals from muscle degradation as
a result of extreme exercise," said Dr. Paula Kislak, President of the
Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights, "toxicity in the liver and
kidneys
may not cause death for days or weeks after a race."

So the 122 confirmed deaths?

"Adding the dogs who were culled, died in training and died after the race
from complications," Dr. Kislak said, "the number is in the thousands. That is
obscene. The race only is run for entertainment and to make money."

Greed is not confined to professional baseball players. The economic impact
to Anchorage alone is estimated at $5 million. The Iditarod is a money-maker.
Glickman, 56, has launched Sled Dog Action Coalition, a nonprofit
volunteer-only organization. She has been so successful, sponsors like Pizza
Hut, Pfizer
and Costco have dropped out. She has received death threats, enough of them so
that she doesn't go to Alaska.

"It is unconscionable," Glickman said. "They (mushers) say they love their
dogs, but they don't love their dogs. It is an act of barbarism. It is a
shameless, bloody business."

In the Iditarod, dogs are a car tire that goes flat. Just get another one.
Except a car tire was never named Lassie or Ol' Yeller. A car tire never
welcomed you home at night. A car tire never took the edge off feeling lonely. A
car
tire never played with the kids, and a kid never cried when the car tire died.

If a dog is man's best friend, this is not how you treat your best friend.
You don't push him so hard he can't even exhale to vomit but instead chokes on
it while falling down.

And as he watches his dog writhe on the ground, what can the musher possibly
say that would even remotely make this sight worthwhile?

IDITAROD - shameles/ bloody bu$ine$$ on the backs of man's best friends!!!

The romantics [sled racing dog owners (read:mercenaries!)] pretend this is
some extension of a Jack London novel. Hell no. This is a not-so-novel Jack The
Ripper crime against man's best friend. It sullies the meaning of sport.
In addition to fluid in the lungs, bleeding stomach ulcers occur, as does
general cramping, dislocations, fractures, muscle and tendon tears, tendinitis,
dehydration, hypothermia, raw paws, penile frostbite and viruses.>> [To

Two anti-Iditarod articles

What Iditarod Does To Dogs Is True March Madness

by Jeff Jacobs
Hartford Courant
March 18, 2004

Jonathan XII, a 3-year-old white Siberian Husky who loves to be petted, lives
a comfortable lifestyle at an unidentified location 20 minutes from the UConn
campus. The shroud of secrecy is necessary, his handler Karen Landwehr said,
to prevent merry pranksters from Rhode Island and other rival schools from
kidnapping the mascot of our state university.

Personally, I'm not buying the explanation.

I'm convinced Jonathan, the noble heir to a tradition that dates to 1934, is
being hidden so he is not drafted into the annual war against dogs. Surely
you've heard of the 1,100-mile death march from Anchorage to Nome. It's the
grotesque spectacle that alternately bills itself as Alaska's great race and the
world's premier dog-sled race.

USA Today columnist Jon Saraceno once called it the "Ihurtadog."

Sportscaster Jim Rome upped the ante to "I-killed-a-dog sled race."

Nothing trumps death, so just paint me thrilled that the 32nd Iditarod
finally, mercifully will end this week.

Early Wednesday morning, Mitch Seavey, 44, won the first prize of $69,000 and
a new Dodge pickup truck - hey, a man needs space to cart away his carcasses
- by crossing the finish line behind his eight canine slaves in a time of nine
days, 12 hours, 20 minutes and 22 seconds.

His dogs were unavailable for comment.

No, not because there isn't a Doctor Dolittle out there who could serve as a
pool reporter and get some juicy quotes. It's because, according to an article
published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine
in 2002, a study showed 81 percent of the dogs that finished the race had
abnormal accumulations of mucus and debris that caused injury and inflammation.

In other words, they were too choked up to comment. Seavey did have plenty to
say about his victory and little of it had to do with running the crap out of
his dogs over a distance longer than from Hartford to Chicago. To be
accurate, Seavey isn't called a dog-beater or abuser or even Master. He is
called a
musher, which clearly is a word to honor the mush-for-brains who continue to
promote and operate this event.

The supporters of this race have the audacity to call the Iditarod a sporting
event. The truth is it's closer to the scourging scene in Mel Gibson's new
movie.

One more dog dropped dead the other day, bringing the total to at least 122,
although there are no official numbers available for the early years. A
7-year-old male named Takk, according to Iditarod officials, died of blood loss
associated with gastric ulcers. What the officials didn't say is ulcers are
linked
to anti-inflammatory drugs frequently used to help mask injury. Yes, the dogs
are subject to random drug testing, so you know these folks are, ah,
motivated enough to cheat. Takk, on Kjetil Backen's 2004 team, was no ordinary
mutt.
He was one of the two key lead dogs that carried Robert Sorlie to first place
last year. In other words, last year's MVP is this year's maggot meal.

Backen reportedly was distraught over Takk's death, but he did manage to ask
reporters to bring the dog back for him. Wouldn't it be fair if the musher
were forced to bring his dead dog to the finish line with him? Or maybe it would
be fairer if Snoopy was the musher and a dozen humans were latched together
for a little 1,100-mile jog through all terrain, including waist-high water and
Godforsaken temperatures. Hey, we would even cut them a break and let them
listen to Sam Cooke singing "Chain Gang" in their earmuff-phones.

Those who would support this race are quick to belittle critics as hysterics
or propagandists for PETA, etc. For the record, my wife and I are longtime
multiple dog owners and we believe in hardy exercise for robust breeds. These
sled dogs are bred to run. A Siberian Husky like Jonathan is a natural, but only
part of the equation. All sorts of breeds and mixed breeds are used. In fact,
a Siberian is often mixed with a Greyhound for optimum speed and endurance. Of
course as competition grows fiercer to improve times, the faster they go, the
harder they will fall.

The cruelty is in the vast distance. The cruelty is in some training
techniques that would turn your stomach. This doesn't begin to address some
manuals
that recommend killing dogs that don't cut the mustard. They call it culling.
Really, it's murder. The irony is that the Iditarod distance is so long in the
first place. The race is patterned after a long-ago emergency supply route to
deliver diphtheria serum.

Dogs reportedly have died from being kicked to death. A group of dogs was
mangled by a snow-making machine. They've been strangulated. Electrocardiograms
to monitor heart problems are now given to the dogs before the race and that's
a start, but only a start.

The romantics pretend this is some extension of a Jack London novel. Hell no.
This is a not-so-novel Jack The Ripper crime against man's best friend. It
sullies the meaning of sport.

What remains of the 87 mushers will be crossing the finish line in the next
few days, which also means the killing may not be over. In the meantime,
Jonathan XII can park himself in front of the television tonight for the start
of
UConn's march to the Final Four. This could be a big month for him, the first
time both the women and the men win national titles in the same year.

"He's a quiet dog. He hardly ever barks," said Landwehr, a 20-year-old junior
majoring in animal science. "He's very mellow, which makes him good with a
crowd."

Landwehr is a member of Alpha Phi Omega, a co-ed community service fraternity
responsible for Jonathan. The last appearances for Jonathan, who Landwehr
said is not allowed in the Civic Center, were Senior Nights at Gampel. She
brings
him to obedience class each week.

"He's a loveable dog, but he's actually quite lazy," Landwehr said. "He likes
to lay down in the middle of games."

And that's beautiful.

A dog should be able to enjoy March Madness.

Not be part of it.

As death toll of dogs rises, so does Iditarod's insanity

Jon Saraceno
USA Today
March 15, 2004

I'm all for mutiny. Dog mutiny, that is.

When it comes to the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog race, how do we get more of our
furry friends to lie down on the job? If they belonged to a union, there would
be a strike every March when the 1,100-mile marathon of dog misery is
propelled by more than 1,000 members through the treacherous Alaskan wilderness.

In that labor dispute, I would be all for the stressed-to-the-max dogs. They
are overworked and underpaid. The money and the glory go to management — in
this case, mushers and their sponsors.

Why does Alaska permit the "Ihurtadog?"

Easy. Commerce — shameless, bloody business carried out on the backs of man's
best friends.

Sunday was the scene of more death and despair. A dog belonging to race
leader Kjetil Backen of Norway suddenly sat down and died. "It is a real tragedy
for him and dog mushing as a whole," race marshal Mark Nordman said at a news
conference.

Imagine how the dog felt.

Last week, a 5-year-old dog named Wolf died.

Apologists contend that dogs cannot be made to run, which is true. But many
of them sure can be coerced and trained. In the sledders' parlance, mutiny
comes when dogs refuse to budge. It already has happened in this year's race,
which has featured a fast, grueling pace during unusually warm weather.

More than an estimated 120 dogs have perished during the history of the race,
which gives a Humanitarian Award. The number of dog deaths does not include
animals that perished afterward — or the thousands that have been injured.
Death is merely an occupational hazard — for the dogs. In 1973, the race's
first
year, the Iditarod took more than 20 days to complete. Two years ago, a speed
record was set when Martin Buser finished the race in less than nine days.

Many dogs are dropped during the race because they are unable to continue,
but many others continue to trudge on with various injuries.

A couple of years ago, a study in the American Journal of Respiratory and
Critical CareMedicine reported that 81% of the 59 dogs they examined after one
Iditarod had "abnormal accumulations" of mucus or cellular debris in their lower
airways. In addition to fluid in the lungs, bleeding stomach ulcers occur, as
does general cramping, dislocations, fractures, muscle and tendon tears,
tendinitis, dehydration, hypothermia, raw paws, penile frostbite and viruses.

Not that it's easy on the mushers, either. But, hey, they choose to
participate in this frozen insanity. Doug Swingley, who won the race from
1999-2001,
was forced to quit from frostbitten corneas last week.

But back to the dogs. Last week, one musher needed an hour to separate three
female dogs in heat from their amorous male teammates, according to the
Anchorage Daily News — a newspaper no self-respecting salmon would permit
itself to
be wrapped in.

First, the Daily News is a sponsor. According to the Alaska Journal of
Commerce, the newspaper shelled out a minimum of $50,000. The newspaper also is
an
investor because it reaps advertising dollars.

Invariably, photographs depict warm and fuzzy images of dogs designed to lull
readers and placate critics. Imagine the horrors we don't see. Mushers and
their teams are not monitored by the media — or anyone else. Likewise, many of
the newspaper's syrupy stories seem almost fantasy-like in nature. According to
one, four-time Iditarod champion Martin Buser discussed how dogs seem to get
into "the zone," as humans report doing during endurance events.

"In the zone, one can smell the sweet scent of success," the Daily News
happily wrote.

Think that's what the dogs are sniffing? I smell something else. Money.

The Daily News is not alone among mercenaries in local media. Alaska
Newspapers, Alaska Public Radio and an ABC-TV affiliate that bills itself the
"Official Television Station of Iditarod 2004" also are sponsors, joining
Chevron,
ExxonMobil, Coors Brewing and Wells Fargo.

The economic impact to Anchorage, site of the ceremonial start, is estimated
at more than $5 million. Organizers increased the size of this year's purse by
more than $100,000. The winner gets $69,000 plus a new Dodge pickup. It
doesn't require much to buy some folks, even at the expense of living creatures
who
cannot defend themselves, like poor, old Wolf.

The dogs, of course, get their usual take.
More suffering.

WHAT JILL KNOWS

Piddling Poodle Puppy

Dear Jill,
Our 10 month old miniature poodle is piddling all over the kitchen floor when
we go out.  We have tried putting newspapers down for her to go on, but she
won't use them.  We are worried that she will start peeing on our carpeting in
other rooms of the house, so we have started closing the door to the kitchen,
so she stays in there while we are out.

We have to work during the day and sometimes I don't make it home for lunch.
She drinks a lot of water or something and can't seem to wait until I get
home. Sometimes when I do make it home to let her out, she gets so excited she
pees indoors.  I don't know if she means to, but it has to stop. After all, she
is no longer a baby. Our friend said to take her to a class for dog obedience,
and we will but is there something we should be doing meanwhile?  We read
your articles and think you're good.  Thank you.
Marcia

Dear Marcia,
A ten month old puppy is still a "baby" dog.  With proper coaching, your
miniature poodle puppy can be completely housetrained and paper-trained in a
short
time.  But first, please take your dog to the vet to rule out any medical
reasons for incontinence.  If your poodle passes the veterinarian's inspection,
try using commercial "piddle pads" (available at pet-supply stores) instead of
newspapers, for times you are not able to make it home.  These pads have a
manwhen necessary.  How many hours a day do you leave your dog alone?  Please
do
not leave your dog all day without walking her or allowing her to "go."

CONGRESS CONSIDERS STEPS TO REDUCE ROADKILL:

Reducing roadkill is just one issue being considered in the
surface transportation reauthorization bill moving through Congress. The
Senate included provisions in its bill, S. 1072, aimed at reducing habitat
fragmentation and wildlife/ vehicle collisions— ultimately saving millions
of animals while increasing public safety. The Senate provisions would
require states to formally consider the need for wildlife crossing
structures (underpasses, culverts, or overpasses) when constructing or
improving highways -- a critical preventative step in solving the roadkill
problem. However, as the transportation bill is taken up in the House of
Representatives, these important wildlife protection provisions may be lost.
If they are, it will be another six years before we have another opportunity
to put into law these common sense provisions on behalf of wildlife and
public safety. In the meantime, millions of animals will lose their lives
trying to cross highways in search of food and mates, and the very survival
of many species -- from box turtles to grizzly bears -- will be compromised.

             WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Please contact your U.S. Representative today. Ask him or
her
to contact Transportation Committee Chairman Don Young and Ranking Democrat
James Oberstar and urge them to include in the Committee’s transportation
bill the wildlife crossing provisions approved by the Senate (Section 1501
of S. 1072). All U.S. Representatives can be reached through the U.S.
Capitol switchboard: 202-224-3121. You can look up the name of your
Representative by going online to www.Congress.org, or by calling The HSUS

Dogs Adverse Reactions request ........ please pass on

Dogs Adverse Reactions:

Per FDA:  "In common terms, an adverse drug experience (ADE) is either an
undesired side effect, or the lack of a desired effect. The Center for
Veterinary
Medicine (CVM) defines an ADE as 'any side effect, injury, toxicity, or
sensitivity reaction (or failure to perform as expected) associated with use of
an
animal drug, whether or not determined to be attributable to the drug.' "
(This means that you need only SUSPECT that the side effect is caused by the
drug;
you do not have to prove it.)

Now with that knowledge.....  we have started a new website called
DogsAdverseReactions.com .  We are looking for stories to post, both as
Memorials and
Survivors.  You DO NOT have to prove a drug caused a reaction, only suspect
it.
But be willing to follow thru with complaints to manufacturer and FDA if not
already done.
If you are  not sure how to file the necessary complaints..... please ask and
we can help you.

If you might be interested ........ feel free to contact me.  Or if you would
like....  send your story in your words, (no profanity please) with
companions picture, birthdate/year and date of passing if passed, plus your
permission
to post.  Your email will be posted with the story, for others to request
further information if they feel your story fits what they are going thru.  A
suggestion is to be sure to comment "In My Opinion".

We are a group of people not against any vet or manufacturer, we only want
the truth known about different drugs that we have a right to be informed of,
before given to our companions.

probation by having a dead dog in his resident during his probation.   (Hot
Springs
Animal Services stated they found the dead dog after neighbors complained of
a dog crying at Dunaway's resident).

Re: Derek Dunaway, convicted animal rapist

Your urgent attention is requested. In October, 2002, our office was
contacted by someone in reluctant e-mail contact with Hot Springs resident Derek
Dunaway. During their correspondence (which harmlessly began on a “pet
lovers”
message board), Dunaway bragged of raping animals, and that he’d worked for,
or
attempted to secure employment at various local animal shelters and veterinary
hospitals in order to access his victims. He also expressed his intent to
advertise himself as a pet-sitting service to this end. Through extensive
contact
with our complainant and review of said dialogue PETA determined that our
complainant’s report had merit. Local officials were contacted and, on
September
17 of that year, Dunaway was charged with one count of sodomy for his admitted
attacks on his dogs who—according to news reports—were found by Katherine
Bolton, DVM, to be “[severely] bleeding from the colon.” He was subsequently
convicted, and his sentence included a prohibition on his owning or harboring
animals for one year (the second half of this prohibitive order was to run from
June 6 to December 6, 2003).

In November, 2003, Hot Springs Animal Services officers responded to a
neighbor’s report of a dog screaming from the vicinity of Dunaway’s
residence. When
officers arrived, they reportedly found a dog in Dunaway’s custody, dead from
causes unapparent. Field Services Supervisor Dan Bugg states that a necropsy
was performed and that “trauma could not be ruled out.” Dunaway appears to
have violated court orders by having this animal in his charge regardless, and
there is some question as to whether Dunaway was in possession of other animals
at the time of this investigation.

Further, Dunaway has recently surrendered to the Garland Humane Society a
female dog who was apparently in heat. A subsequent veterinary examination
reportedly determined that sperm was present in the animal’s vaginal cavity.
We
understand that, at the request of the county prosecutor’s office, the sample
in
question is to be analyzed to determine its origin, animal or human, and that
results are still pending.

We are alarmed to learn that Dunaway allegedly and currently has in his
charge two red Doberman pinschers, a black Labrador and a cat—at least two of
these
animals were given him by his father who was present during the 2002 court
proceedings (Dunaway was reportedly found in possession of two Doberman
pinschers at the time of his 2002 arrest, as well). On January 15, we requested
that
humane officials visit Dunaway’s animals with an eye for trauma consistent
with
non-canine penetration. However we are unable to determine if Dunaway’s dogs
have in fact been examined by any law-enforcement official, last week, or
ever, and would appreciate some clarification regarding such efforts if they
were
made at all.

Repeat crimes among animal abusers—particularly so-called
“zoophiles”—are
the rule. Given this and recent events, we urge your respective offices to do
whatever is necessary to ensure the welfare of all animals currently in
Dunaway’s charge, to hold him accountable for any injuries sustained by same,
and to
expedite whatever processes are in motion to hold the suspect accountable for
sentencing violations. May we suggest that the animals in question be taken
into protective custody, or, if a field examination can determine the existence
of swelling, tearing, bleeding or any other form of trauma, that they be
seized as evidence? Surely you agree that their safety should be of utmost
concern,
and that any and all avenues available to secure their safety be vigorously
explored?

Please allow us to hear from you soon regarding this matter. If there is
another entity to whom we should appeal for proactive assistance in this matter,
please advise.

Very sincerely,

Martin Mersereau, Manager

Domestic Animal Issues & Abuse Department

You see the pictures of them in restraints, their heads locked in
preparation for their poisoning.
But you turn your head, It's too painful for your eyes to see
If you don't look it doesn't affect you, it's out of your hands
How wrong could you be?

It hurts you when you see them, because you know it's not right
That's your soul instinct telling you, but you push it back inside
Keep on walking, keep on living the way you've been trained
Don't you see your just part of a lifestyle so deeply ingrained?

You pass their abused bodies frozen in rows
When it's packaged and labelled, it's not murder any more
Their heart beats, their lungs breath, for freedom they yearn
But it's out of your hands, when they're outside your sphere of
concern

I've been where you are, I am where your not
It once hurt to look, but I never forgot
So to all of you who know of their suffering and deny it
Remember this: Karma doesn't care whether you believe in it or not

March 31, 2004

We have received your calls.  We have received your emails.  We have
received your letters.  SUSHISAMBA will no longer be serving live lobster
sashimi.  The change is taking place immediately and will be reflected at
all four of our locations on our new spring menus within the next week.

SUSHISAMBA has always encouraged our guests to send us their feedback.  And
we attribute our ongoing success to our strong relationship with our
customers.  Most of the comments have praised us for our sound concept that
focuses on great food, music and service.  However, this past week has been
flooded with communications voicing concerns over the live lobster sashimi
featured on our menus.

As a direct result, the dish will still feature lobster sashimi, but it will
no longer be served live.

I want to be clear that our actions are the outcome of all of the people
that called, emailed and wrote letters ~ those of you that took the time out
of your day to communicate with us in a clear and honest fashion.  To you,
we have responded and we hope to continue to see you at  SUSHISAMBA.  If you
havent dined with us as of yet, we hope we can serve you in the near
future.

However, there are people that chose to try to intimidate us.  People who
placed harassing phone calls and left messages calling our female managers
whores and prostitutes.  People that wrote and compared what we did to the
tragedy of 9/11.  Please know that this victory is not yours.  Communication
is the key to resolving all issues, and people who behave in such a manner
only stand in the way of any possible success.

Again, we thank you for your time and hope that you are pleased that we have
been able to resolve this issue in a timely fashion.

Jen,
This Parrot is in IOWA and we are in MA. When the members and finances
allow such a rescue we will certainly do so, however it is much more
complicated than a simple matter of money. Parrots are property, as are
all animals unfortunately. If this were a dog living in a garage, as
many do, there is little that can be done aside from a public awareness
campaign.

That is the reason this story was posted here. Letters are streaming in
to see that this parrot is placed in a better situation. Please send in
a letter voicing your concern.

Thank you
Tami

Local Shelters Continue To Use Guns To Euthanize Dogs
New Law Likely Won't Be Passed This Session

It may seem like a cruel way to end an animal's life, but it remains legal in Kentucky to use a gun to euthanize a dog.

Such incidents continue to happen in the Tri-State, particularly at shelters in rural parts of the state, WLWT Eyewitness News 5's Brian Hamrick reported Wednesday.

Kentucky lawmakers have a bill written up that would end the practice, which leaves citizens wondering why it's not been enacted yet.

The grim reality is that so many animals pack shelters every year that some shelters find themselves needing to euthanize hundreds of dogs, Hamrick reported.

"It's sad and unfortunate that in some counties, this is still a method they need to use," Animal Advisory Board Director Beckey Reiter said.

For years, Reiter and her colleagues have been trying to outlaw shooting animals at shelters as a form of euthanasia.

"If we have to do it, I feel it's our duty to do it humanely," she said.

So why hasn't a law been passed that makes it illegal to kill animals with guns? Hamrick Wednesday spoke by telephone to Ky. Sen. Albert Robinson, who said the choice should be left up to each county.

"You don't require them to use a needle to end the life of this hog or this cow or this pork or this beef that you put on your table that you eat every day if you eat meat," Robinson said. "You don't require them to put a needle and say it's inhumane."

As more and more animals pack more shelters, another legislative session is ending in Kentucky, and it looks like a new law will not pass again.

So while shooting animals at shelters remains legal, those against it remain steadfast, Hamrick reported.

"I have to stay optimistic," Reiter said. "It will pass eventually."

The average cost of the lethal injection is about $1 per animal, and shelters willing to give up the gun can qualify for state assistance.

Subject: File - Review of GVA film Duchovny voiceover.txt

A new documentary, “Best Friend Forgotten", with voiceover by David Duchovny, airing on PBS Outreach programs, presents effective messages about pet-owner responsibility, spay/neuter, and adoption.
To be a volunteer in the effort to broadcast this film as widely as possible, please visit
http://www.givevoicetoanimals   . . .

FOLLOWING IS A GREAT REVIEW, and contains well-worded, factual information you might want to copy and pass on.

Thanks, all!
Your List Owner,
Cynthia

THE REVIEW:
The opening moments of “Best Friend Forgotten" starkly demonstrate just
how much the public is in need of a movie like this one. When asked, “Do
you know what pet overpopulation is?” several people interviewed on the
street react as if they’re hearing a foreign language.

But with its focus on two individual shelter animals, use of effective
statistics, and emphasis on key themes related to animal homelessness,
this compelling film will serve as a solid education for many people
unfamiliar with the work of shelters and animal care and control
agencies.

"Best Friend Forgotten", produced and directed by Julie Lofton and filmed
over two years, paints a bleak picture. But the film also provides hope, in
the form of information about spaying and neutering and adoption.
Viewers of the documentary hear from animal control officers, shelter
employees, veterinarians, rescue group volunteers, a senator, and others
as the film illustrates the consequences of pet overpopulation.

Through the voiceover by actor David Duchovny, viewers learn of the
millions of “unwanted” animals with uncertain futures. Early in the film,
Maddie’s fund president Rich Avanzino says, “We are failing our best
friends.”--– a theme that’s echoed in later parts of the movie. In segments
interspersed throughout the film, Duchovny narrates the stories of two of
these homeless friends – Oreo, an abandoned black-and-white cat found
near a tenement building and brought to Chicago Animal Care and
Control, and Clover, a stray Lab mix picked up by Los Angeles City
Animal Services.

Choosing two animals to follow enables the filmmaker to put a furry face
on animal homelessness. In telling these tales, Best Friend Forgotten
touches on mobile adoption events, the fate of stray dogs and cats, and
the consequences of a minor illness on a newly admitted shelter resident.
The narrative is instructive, but it is the animals who speak louder than
any words could; Clover’s happy expression and newly shiny black coat,
seen at the conclusion of his story, seem to say it best.

Accompanying the stories are hard statistics that provide yet another
effective means of education. With carefully placed numbers, the film
illustrates the seriousness of the pet overpopulation problem. Appealing
to viewers’ bank accounts, Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois reveals that the
current situation has been estimated to cost tax payers two billion dollars
per year. Later he informs viewers that 10,000 babies are born each day,
while an incredible 70,000 puppies and kittens enter the world every 24
hours. Duchovny demonstrates the need for improvement in shelter
adoptions by stating that fewer than 20 percent of pet owners adopt from
shelters.

Numbers continually speak for themselves – Melanie Sobel, program
director at the Chicago shelter, tells the audience that while the agency
takes in approximately 30,000 animals each year, only 3,000 are
adopted. Thousands of animals make their temporary home at the L.A.
shelters; only a scant few can be taken to filmed mobile pet adoption
events.

Best Friend Forgotten ventures beyond numbers to get its important
messages across. The viewer is repeatedly reminded of the high numbers
of animals without homes; too many even for the thousands of animal
shelters in the country to handle. The audience will find it difficult to
ignore the fact that caring for them is an enormous task – and that
shelters cannot possibly house and handle every animal who comes
through their doors.

The film also emphasizes that people are the root of the problem. Sobel
points out that although many reasons are provided by people who
relinquish pets, the “real reason” is often that they weren’t aware of the
difficulty and responsibility involved in keeping a pet. Along with a
discussion about stray and feral cats, Duchovny offers the sobering
statistic that five out of ten dogs will change owners before they’re even
a year old.
"Best Friend Forgotten" also shows that many people are simply
uneducated about being responsible pet owners, and that spay/neuter
programs need more vigorous outreach efforts. Several spay/neuter
“myths” are expressed by dog owners in this film and then summarily
debunked by a veterinarian.

Euthanasia features prominently, with the alternative presented as a bleak
existence: “life in a cage without love and attention from a real family.”
Because of a scarcity of resources and space, viewers are told, it is
impossible for shelters to care for millions of animals. While not shown
on camera, euthanasia is suggested and briefly described, and the
audience sees a veterinarian checking for the heart beat of a cat
post-euthanasia. At some points, euthanasia is referred to as just that: at
others, “killed” is the term of choice.

The “no-kill” movement makes an appearance, presented as the
opposition to euthanasia. However, a quote from Best Friends Animal
Sanctuary’s Michael Mountain is juxtaposed with a statement showing
that municipal shelters simply take in more animals than “no kills” can.
(The film appears to give the impression that only municipal shelters can
be open-admission.)  Duchovny boils down the debate when he reveals
that Best Friends houses 1,800 animals while the Chicago shelter takes in
30,000 new animals every year.

"Best Friend Forgotten" provides an excellent opportunity for the public to
learn about animal homelessness.

A simple start down the road to helping raise awareness over the impact that spay/neuter has on lowering the numbers of pets that end up in our shelters.

PA: Spay and neuter legislation introduced
HARRISBURG — Citing concerns with increased pressure on local animal shelters and in an attempt to reduce the number of dogs that have to be euthanized, state Sen. John R. Gordner (R-27) has introduced legislation to provide funding for low cost spay and neuter programs in Pennsylvania.

Gordner’s legislation provides for a voluntary check-off box on dog license applications so that license purchasers can contribute $1 to a special fund that will be used to defray the costs of spaying and neutering dogs.
“Unwanted pets create nuisances in neighborhoods and overflow our animal shelters,” said Gordner. “It is important we find a way to encourage more people to have pets spayed and neutered, and a voluntary check-off on dog licenses is a simple way to provide more funding to these important programs.”
Currently, proceeds from sales of dog licenses are kept in a restricted account within the Department of Agriculture and are specified for certain purposes, but not for spaying and neutering programs. Additionally, the state dog law requires persons who adopt pets from shelters to have the animals sterilized.
“By providing funding through a voluntary check-off, we can provide additional dollars for sterilization while not eroding support for programs within the restricted account,” said Gordner.
Gordner has been working on the legislation with PA Pets, a Bloomsburg-based non-profit group that promotes and operates a low-cost sterilization program through cooperative veterinarians.

Please send and crosspost this letter far and wide!!!!!
Romania Animal Rescue,Inc. protest against the tragic conditions in which Galatzi'strays are kept in "Baza de Ecarisaj"...a so-called City Hall shelter!
"Baza de Ecarisaj"(a place used in communism time for killing strays and skin them for fur)was transformed recently in a nightmare for part of Galatzi'strays, around 200(and number is continously growing)...dogs are eating there only occassionally and they are dieing because lack of medical care assured...

Romania Animal Rescue,Inc. support the group of animal'lovers from Galatzi who during years, individually rescued many street dogs but now join forces to  protest at international level and complaint about the inhuman and illegal conditions of catching, sheltering of Galatzi'strays and administration of City Hall "shelter"!

City Hall "shelter" is illegal (from current romanian laws regarding street dogs'administration)and has inadequate conditions.
Big part of Galatzi'strays are sterilised and in time,Galatzi'street dogs population will decrease naturally...torturing those poor animals ,by letting them in dirt and without minimal conditions assured is inhuman and revolting!

Animal'lovers from Galatzi are devastated to see their dear dogs took away from areas where they used to live, where they were feed and at least free,if not happy!

I know 2004 is an electoral year and soon the election campaign must raise more (new)votes for political party (PSD)in charge in Galatzi and in Romania....but I'm sure that an international scandal will not help you raise awarness for being a good leader or a good human being.
All national and international rules for animals'protection were broken in that place, called shelter ,where witness declared dogs were killed in 1998,1999 and probably they will be killed(euthanasiated with "romanian free methods")now-during this campaign!!!!!

PLEASE STOP ABUSES AGAINST GALATZI'STRAYS AND PLEASE,CLOSE THIS "SHELTER"-"Baza de Ecarisaj" ,a horrible place where dogs are convicted to a slow, painful death!!!!

Please, access the  WAG New York's (Welfare for Animals in Greece) website and kindly sign the guest book and support WAG's call for a united BOYCOTT of the 2004 Athens Olympics, Tourism and Industry-- in the memory of thousands of Greece's abandoned animals sacrificed in the name of greed and inhumanity. Certain Greek officials have been viewing this site dedicated to the innocent victims of Greece's violent brutality, willful neglect and government indifference.

April 3 2004 UPDATE - GREECE

Greece has been under fire in light of the seeming indifference of the Greek state and municipal governments referencing animal welfare.  We have read the article about the Samaras debacle and  still others,  amusingly indicating that Greece has straightened out her act.  Very few see little proof.  Poisonings and other evil and sick crimes perpetrated against animals have escalated and more and more animals, every day,  are sacrificed in the name of inhumanity.

Now, the already marginalized animal welfare community is being accused of marketing dogs for their bodies and skins for capitol gain, by allegedly crazed women missing chromosomes or perhaps desperately needing estrogen replacement therapy.  The scandal hungry Greek press has a pit bull hold on this ridiculous and reprehensible issue.

Greece, the questionable Cradle of Democracy is turning into a circus or better yet, an afternoon soap opera viewed on major network TV.

The 2004 Athens Olympic Games will hoist a bright torchlight  over the failures of Greek society and civic institutions to live up to their obligation as humans to meet the basic,  simple needs of dogs and cats,  who are our oldest and most loyal friends and helpers.  Without them we could have not survived the Ice Age or have stored
enough food to build civilization.  Without them,  there could be no
Greece and no Olympics,  past or present.

Fulfilling our obligation to the creatures that share our planet has not happened .

We fear that perhaps Greece will not be able to successfully fulfill her promise to advance the standards of animal welfare in her country.   It is sadly evident that our struggle must be a marathon,  not a sprint--and that for us,  the Olympic
Games will be not a celebration but an unparalleled opportunity to
educate the Greek public and the world.  Anyone, other than God, up to the job?

TRANSPORT & SLAUGHTER CRUELTIES DOCUMENTED

CANADA: A pig limping from a transport truck, cattle crammed together
for a 67-hour cross-country journey, a cow struggling to right
herself as she is hoisted into the air by a chained hind leg, a still
live bison strung up by a hind leg, cattle shot in the head 2-4
times. These are among the images recorded by Animals Angels's
activist Lesley Moffat as she followed trucks carrying pigs and
cattle to slaughterplants in Canada, Oregon and California. (Three
brief clips can be viewed on the Toronto Star web site.) "You see
these injured, sick animals in trucks and slaughterhouses all over
Canada," stated Moffat. The video documents the inadequacy of legal
protection for farmed animals, notes the Canadian Coalition for Farm
Animals (CCFA).

Copies have been supplied to Canada's Minister of Agriculture, the
Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), and the Alberta Farm Animal
Care Association.
The Coalition is calling for a ban on the transport of nonambulatory
animals, and limits on the amount of time farmed animals can be
transported without water and food. It will also push the government
to initiate mandatory animal-handling training for slaughterplant
workers. [CCFA has also filed a complaint with CFIA seeking
prosecution in the case of an improperly stunned cow and a cow
who was electrically prodded.] The footage was to be shown at an
Ontario meat inspection review which was called for by legislators
after last summer's revelation that dead animals were allegedly being
processed for human consumption (see 4d of http://tinyurlcom/2vnlh ).
[The judge disallowed the video since none of the slaughter footage
was from the province.]

At the meat inspection review, Michael Draper, of the Ontario SPCA,
related concerns about animal welfare in licensed slaughterplants,
illegal ones, and during transport. He said there are hundreds of
illegal slaughter operations in Ontario. "There is no regard for
animal welfare in these operations," said Draper, "with dull knives,
axes and even screwdrivers being used to kill animals in very
unsanitary conditions. It's an organized commercial crime meeting a
demand for cheap meat." He said there are problems with licensed
operations, too (for example, see 4E of: http://tinyurl.com/2vnlh ).
Draper also noted that 50 serious transport violations occurred
between January 2000 and July 2003, with no action taken other than
"ineffectual" warning letters:

Video," Canadian Coalition for Farm Animals press release, March 2,
2004.

IN THE U.K., on March 26th, Grampian Country Chickens pled guilty to
causing the unnecessary suffering of 2,486 chickens. The birds died
of heat stress last July while traveling 13 miles to slaughter on a
truck carrying 5,500 chickens when the temperature reached 82 F. (28
C.). Four earlier journeys that day had resulted in some 1,370
chickens dying from heat. The company said ordinarily 3 or 4 birds
would die while in transit. A council member said the death rate
indicated a serious disregard for the birds' welfare and the law.
Grampian said steps have been taken to prevent it from happening
again, such as employing weather forecasts and altering catching
patterns so birds are not caught in the summer during the hottest
part of the day. The company was fined 4,000 ($7,374).

IN VIRGINIA, on March 29th, a truck carrying more than 100 pigs to a
Smithfield slaughterplant overturned in Virginia, killing about 25
pigs, injuring others and the driver, and backing up traffic for 4
hours. According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
(PETA), the accident threw most of the pigs into a field, where many
lay unable to move. Smithfield officials rejected an offer from PETA
to help euthanize severely injured pigs. Per PETA, the state
veterinarian refused to come out and help, and only after company
officials spent more than 2 hours attempting to capture other pigs
did they begin euthanizing the injured ones. A captive bolt gun
reportedly malfunctioned, resulting in at least one pig having to be
repeatedly shot. The driver was charged with reckless driving. No
cruelty charges were filed against the driver or company.

IN NORTH CAROLINA, a truck carrying a load of pigs to a Smithfield
slaughterplant overturned on March 2nd when the driver attempted to
bypass a detour.
Maneuvering around two sets of barricades and ignoring several
warning signs, the driver took a turn and ended up in a ditch before
the truck turned over, spilling the pigs out and injuring several.
Traffic was blocked for hours while pigs were rounded up with
electric prods and portable fencing. Another truck took the pigs to
slaughter, and the driver was charged with driving around a
barricade.

IN NEW ZEALAND, a cow leapt to her death from the top of a two-tier
United Carriers truck traveling at about 100 km(60 miles)/hr on State

the truck, said the cow hit the road head-first and rolled off to the

said. "It definitely didn't die straight away - it was still kicking

have been put out of its misery," Beasley stated. The cow was still

Dear Animal Lovers and Friends of Animals

If you can spare a moment, Please be a voice for those who cannot speak and sign the National Spay / Neuter No-Kill petition located at: http://www.petsandanimals.org

Please take a look and consider signing this important petition yourself and forwarding it to other animal-lovers and friends that can help. Every year six million companion animals die in kill shelters all across America, over 16,000 puppies, kitten's dogs and cats per day, with no voice fighting for them. PAW is trying to get friends, family, animal organizations, animal lovers and volunteers in every State in America to participate and represent to be a voice for the animals who cannot speak to help collect petition signatures.

We are looking to keep this petition drive going so that our voices can be heard and passed on to state legislative officials of each state to help introduce to pass and make available FREE Spay / Neuter programs. You can read more on our petition on our website www.petsandanimals.org, how one public county animal shelter in Florida has already implemented a Free Spay / Neuter program that is offered to all thier county residents that is making a difference.

Through your help we can try to help make a difference to help save more homeless animals from being needlessly killed in a society that does not care. PAW and all the animals who cannot speak thank you in advance for your signature and any help you may give to pass this petition on to others. PLEASE HELP US HELP THEM

The regional nationalists of southern France support bullfighting. They accuse Paris of "Jacobinism" by ruling them. I say, YES TO JACOBINISM, NO TO NATIONALISM! There follows an analysis of the link between bloodsports and nationalism and tyranny, and the necessity of moral progress and humanitarianism ("Jacobinism").

Dallas/Ft. W: 7 y/o male Blue Heeler needs care for 1 month while
guradian recovers

Please crosspost. Contact information is at the bottom.

Imagine this - everything is going okay in your life. You've got a
good job making good money. You don't have a lot of family, but
that's okay because you've got your dog and you and he are a family.
You've got a decent place to live and everything seems under control.
Life is good. Then you get sick. Sick enough to go into the hospital.
The doctors tell you that you're going to have to go to a hospital
200 miles away from your home and that they don't have any idea how
long you'll be hospitalized.

You quickly find a friend that can take of your dog and enter the
hospital to get well as fast as you can - you know your dog needs
you. You do well in the hospital, do everything that the doctors tell
you and put 110% into your recovery. Someone is waiting for you
outside of the hospital and you miss his cold-nosed kisses as much as
he misses you.

Meanwhile, outside the hospital, the landlord rents your home to
someone else, your boss fills your position, and the friend that
promised to watch over your dog has put his house up for sale and as
soon as he sells it, he's hitting the road in his Winnebago, and
guess what, he can't take your dog with him. You need to find a place
for this dog, he tells you.

Okay, the doctor finally says you're well enough to go home. You and
your dog will finally be reunited. Right???

The social worker finds a group home for you to stay in while you get
back on your feet, which won't take long - you're well educated and
hard working, and your dog is super motivation to make a new home for
him and yourself.

The group home will take you but not your dog. You are crushed. You
stay strong for the sake of your dog, but inside you're terrified.
You can get another house, you can get another job, but your dog is
YOUR DOG! He's your FAMILY! Losing him would mean losing everything
that you've worked so hard for during your recovery.

Here's where you and I come in. I'm a discharge coordinator at this
hospital, and being the "mom" of four rescued dogs myself, I FEEL this
woman's pain. "There but for the grace of God go I." I don't know what
I'd do if I had to face losing my dogs because of an unexpected
illness. But as a former volunteer at the Humane Society, I do know
that animal rescue people have some of the biggest hearts around, and
can be very ingenious in finding solutions to challenges like this
one. We have a small system of foster homes here Wichita Falls, and
any one of us would be willing to take in this woman's dog for the
time it takes her to get back on her feet, but she is GOING BACK TO
THE DALLAS/FT. WORTH AREA and really wants to be able visit her dog
and call him occasionally. She also wants to be able to reclaim her
baby as soon as possible and having a foster home nearby to where she
is going will help facilitate that.

Please help us. This woman is very wary of shelters and boarding
homes. When she was much younger a friend was watching her dog while
she was out of town. The friend let the dog run away and the dog was
picked up and destroyed by the shelter before the woman could make it
back to town to save him.) With everything that this dog and his
owner have been through, I feel that foster care is the way to go.
The dog would be in a safe and loving environment while he waits
for "Momma" to reclaim him, and "Momma" would have the reassurance of
knowing that her baby is in the care of responsible, compassionate
people who understand how much a pet means to an individual.

I am truly hoping that we can find a foster home situation for this
dog. I don't foresee it taking more than a month for my client to
reestablish herself, and a month is really stretching it. If no one
is willing to take him in for the full month maybe two or more of you
would be willing to take him in for parts of the month.

Please let me know if you or someone you know can help us in any way.
My client is willing to contribute financially to the care of her
dog, and If you want, I can arrange for a phone interview (you can
decide after talking to her is helping her is something you want to
do,) although it's not necessary on our end - we'll take any
assistance we are offered and I trust that everyone that I've
contacted are qualified, caring foster parents.

Thank you in advance for any help or advice you can offer. Please
help us if you can.

My system administrator is having difficulty figuring out exactly
what my email address - it's a really weird bunch of gobbley-gook that
no one has been able to access today, hopefully they'll straighten it
out. You'd think that I should know what it is, but we mainly use our
email for a special intra net where just our names pop up instead of
full email addys.

Thanks for all your help! I know with all the angels out there
someone will be able to help Tyler and CH!

30 Days of Action Against Animal Testing

In preparation for World Week for Animals in
Laboratories (WWAIL), New York Animal Rights Activists
will kick off an unprecedented 30 days of Action
Against Animal Testing, focusing primarily on the
notorious animal testing lab, Huntingdon Life Sciences
(HLS). Our 30 days of action will begin on April 9th
with a full day of protests at the Customers and
Suppliers of HLS.

Date: Friday, April 9, 2004

1st Demo Target: Forest Laboratories
Location: 909 Third Ave. (between E. 54th & 55th
Sts.), NYC
Telephone: 800-947-5227
Time: Meet at 9:45 am....demo will begin promptly at
10:00 am

2nd Demo Target: Sumitomo Corporation of America
Location: 600 Third Ave. (between E. 39th & 40th
Sts.), NYC

Time: 11:30 am

3rd Demo Target: Focal Communications
Location: 1 Penn Plaza
Telephone: 212-812-8100
Time: 1:00 pm

Forest Labs and Sumitomo are customers of HLS and
contract for the killing of animals for product
testing, while Focal Communications provides
telecommunications services making it possible for HLS
to continue to do business. HLS is responsible for the
killing of 500 innocent animals a day. Banners, signs
and literature will be provided.

If you have any doubts or questions about whether it
is worth the time and effort to join us, think about
the 70,000 animals that are right now, at this moment,
imprisoned in the animal concentration camp known as
Huntingdon Life Sciences. They are depending on you to
speak out for them and to give voice to their agony
and despair. In the event that you are unable to
attend, please take a few moments to call the 3
companies listed above to voice your disgust at their
continued support of the puppy killing scum at HLS.
And please, mark your calendar now, for our regularly
scheduled Sunday demo at the home of HLS CEO, Andrew
Baker on April 11th. Details will be posted soon.

Hello,

Hello to all our animal loving friends.

Wow, it is April already and the South African winter is just around the corner. ( And so is kitten season ).
We also have our General Elections coming up. Now my dear friends, I have not gone mad. I have mentioned the elections and kittens in the same sentence because I believe that there is a definite connection between the two.

Now is the time to start lobbying your local Councilors to bring out new Laws to protect our animal friends. Did you know that there are NO LAWS in this dear old South Africa to stop people from backyard-breeding and selling the puppies and kittens on street corners?

The time has come for us all to do something drastic. We cannot sit back and let this cruel practice continue. We must start showing the rest of the world that we are not a third world Country. Even though we certainly act like one with our outdated laws and 'I don't care a damn attitude'.

We get complaints on a daily basis about animal abuse. Please help us do something !! Don't sit there and winge and whine. Contact us and let us do something constructive . Don't just ignore the problem, it will not go away. This is really going to be a " I want to get this of my chest" newsletter.

"The day may come when the rest of the animal creation may acquire those rights which never could have been withholden from them but by the hand of tyranny. The question is not can they REASON, nor can they TALK, but can they SUFFER?"

-- Jeremy Bentham 1748 - 1832

Toolboxes and 1080

The scandal of how an organization calling itself the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) is promoting the use in South Africa of a poison so harmful that it has been banned in the USA for the last thirty years, continues. On 702 Radio last Sunday afternoon, Dr. Nick King of the EWT explained to Tim Neary how farmers have a 'toolbox' of problem animal control methods and that 1080 poison was merely intended to be 'another tool in the toolbox.'

He was so matter-of-fact about it, and glossed over the moral issues so smoothly and effortlessly, that few listeners would have realized the true horror of what he was accepting as normal. Click here for more...

It Is In Your Power To Set Me Free

We all dream about releasing wild animals back to nature, but it is not quite as easy at it seems - especially not in the case of predators. In most instances the animals are highly territorial and it almost impossible to introduce especially captive bred animals into an area where there are resident wild animals of the same species. FELINE HEALTH ALERT: LILIES CAN BE LETHAL

With Easter just around the corner, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control
Center (APCC) has partnered with the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA)
in a campaign to educate companion animal caretakers about the
potential dangers of some of the most popular springtime plants. Many
kinds of lilies--including Easter lily, tiger lily, rubrum lily,
Japanese show lily and some species of the day lily--can cause kidney
failure in cats if ingested. Last year alone, the center handled more
than 125 cases of cats ingesting a lilium species. Signs of toxicosis,
such as vomiting, lethargy and loss of appetite, may appear within a
few hours, and will continue to worsen as damage to the kidneys
progresses. Without prompt and proper treatment, kidney failure can
develop in 36-72 hours. "Unfortunately, all parts of the lily are
considered toxic to cats," says APCC veterinary toxicologist Dr.
Sharon Gwaltney-Brant. "Consuming even small amounts can be
life-threatening."

You can keep your feline family members safe and sound by simply
removing all dangerous plants from their access. We also encourage you
to consider safer but beautiful alternatives to lilies, such as Easter
orchids, Easter daisies and violets. To help you identify potentially
harmful members of the lily family, the APCC and CFA have developed
online informational materials that include photos of dangerous
species and a list of nontoxic plants. Please visit APCC or CFA to
take a look.

Dear Friend,

Right now decisions are being made to allow the trade in ivory to be reopened.

It is almost certain this will spark a wave of illegal slaughter - potentially as serious as the bloody 1980's, when
Africa lost half its elephant population to poaching.

We need your help to ensure the ban on the trade in ivory remains in place.

Please click on the link to the right to view  'BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS' , I FAW's campaign video.

Veganizing Easter

EASTER CELEBRATION
Easter Sunday is a celebration of the resurrection of Christ and ends
a 40-day period of fasting and penitence that commemorates Jesus'
fasting in the wilderness. For Western Christians, Easter falls on
the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal
equinox about March 21.

Because of the multicultural diversity of our American population, we
notice there are many variations on the familiar traditions that
include going to church, presenting the children with Easter baskets,
and watching them find their treasures during the customary Easter
egg hunt.

Vegans practice the same traditions but the packaging takes on a
different focus. For instance, the vegan Easter basket would not
likely be filled with the typical candies made of refined white sugar
whitened by refining the sugar over animal bones. The vegan Easter
basket might be filled with fruit juice sweetened whole grain cookies
made without eggs. Nuts in the shell may appear in the basket along
with little wrapped packages containing simple gifts appealing to
children, such as toy cars, little dolls, or small books.

Though eggs may seem like a benign food that does not kill the
chicken, confined chickens raised for egg production suffer a
miserable, painful life. Instead of hunting for hidden Easter eggs,
vegan children might search in the garden or the house for fresh
carrots and little boxes of raisins that become a dinnertime
carrot-raisin salad. Possibly the hunt may take on a special theme
that appeals to children, like searching for little toy dinosaurs or
other animals.

In most American homes, the Easter meal is centered on the
time-honored ham. However, in the vegan household we spare our
friend, the highly intelligent pig, and choose a planet-friendly
entre instead. With vegetarian meat substitutes made from soy and
wheat gluten, the main course can easily imitate the flavor of ham
without disturbing the real piggy from his nap or playful romp in the
mud.

Because we aim for innovative food combinations, we plan our menu
with lively flavors that blend together to offer extraordinary taste
sensations. Our festive dinner then becomes a memorable event.

EASTER DINNER

Easter Menu Recipes Below

Eggless Deviled Eggs
Salad with Triple Citrus Dressing
Curried Veggie Ham Polenta
Pear Raisin Chutney
Quick and Tasty Black Beans
Steamed Asparagus
Pistachio Peanut Bonbons
Fresh Strawberries
The Eggless Deviled Eggs is our conversation-piece appetizer. To
imitate the appearance of hard-boiled egg white halves, cut half-inch
thick slices of firm tofu. Using a paring knife, shape the slices
into several small ovals that resemble egg whites. Then scoop out the
centers and fill them with a tofu mixture seasoned just like the real
deviled eggs. Sprinkle them with paprika, bring them to the table,
and be ready for questions like, "What, these are not real eggs?
Well, then, what are they?"

Our Easter dinner begins with a salad of mixed greens, lots of
chopped chunky vegetables like carrots, radishes, celery, sugar snap
peas, and cucumbers. The special dressing, Triple Citrus Dressing,
blends orange, lemon, and lime juice with zesty seasonings to create
a salad that stands apart from the tired, humdrum iceberg lettuce
with thousand island dressing.

The main entre, a Curried Veggie Ham Polenta, features a
polenta-based dish dotted confetti-fashion with bright green peas,
diced red bell pepper, and totally fat-free veggie ham made from soy
and wheat gluten. An ideal accompaniment is Pear Raisin Chutney with
sweet, pungent flavors.

Quick 'N Tasty Black Beans flavored with garlic and tomatoes offers
pleasing flavors and a flamboyant color contrast cuddled next to the
polenta. A tasty alternative to the beans might be Baked Sweet
Potatoes and Apples. The Steamed Asparagus is the perfect choice for
this season and complements our platter with the ideal touch of
intense green color.

With a hearty and satisfying meal such as this one, most guests will
appreciate a light dessert. Those who enjoy that little touch of
something sweet at the end of the meal but don't have room for a
really big dessert will appreciate the bite-size Pistachio Peanut
Bonbons along with a bowl of plump, fresh Strawberries.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------

With a creative spirit and a few extra minutes, this unique version
of Eggless Deviled Eggs emulates the real thing rather closely
without ever causing our friend, the chicken, to give up a moment's
pleasure as she pecks for worms in the barnyard.

EGGLESS DEVILED EGGS

1 t. salt
2 C. (480 ml) warm water
1 lb. (450 g) firm tofu (for egg whites)

1/2 lb. (225 g) firm tofu (for filling)
1/2 C. (120 ml) + 1 T. Vegenaise
or other soy mayonnaise
1/2 t. dry mustard
3/4 t. salt
1/8 t. pepper
3/4 t. turmeric
2t. rice vinegar
1/2 t. vegan Worcestershire sauce

Paprika
Cherry tomatoes

EGG WHITES: Combine salt and water in a large baking dish, and stir
well to dissolve the salt. Set aside.
Drain and rinse the 1 lb. (450 g) of tofu. Cut tofu into
one-half-inch (1 cm) thick slices vertically, Cut each slice in half
to become 2 pieces that are almost square. Using a small paring
knife, form each square into an oval, imitating the shape of a
hard-boiled egg cut in half.
Then, with a small spoon, carefully scoop out the centers of each of
the ovals to form a cavity. Marinate all the prepared ovals in the
salt water while preparing the filling. Add cut-away pieces to
filling.
FILLING: Drain and rinse the 1/2 lb. (225 g) tofu. Using the fingers,
crumble the tofu into a medium-size mixing bowl.
Add remaining ingredients except the paprika and cherry tomatoes, and
stir well to blend thoroughly. Adjust seasonings to taste if needed.
Drain "egg whites" on several layers of paper towels, and fill
cavities with prepared filling.
Sprinkle the tops with paprika and arrange on a lettuce-lined platter
leaving the center open. Fill the center with cherry tomatoes. Makes
about 16 halves.

TRIPLE CITRUS SALAD DRESSING

----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------

Dazzling color and alluring flavor combine to make this dish a
sensation. With its no-fat Veggie Ham, it's an ideal vegan
alternative to serve for a gourmet Easter dinner. To bring the meal
together with ease, prepare it a day or two ahead and simply reheat.

For guests who are timid about curry spices, consider using the
smaller amount in the recipe. For medium spicy, use one full teaspoon
of curry powder.

CURRIED HAM POLENTA

1 C. (240 ml) frozen peas

1 1/2 medium onions, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 5.5-oz. (155 g) pkg. Yves Veggie Ham, diced
1/2 t. dried oregano
2 t. Bragg Liquid Aminos
1/2 C. (120 ml) water

4 C. (1 liter) water
5 oz. (120 ml + 2 T.) soymilk
1 1/4 t. salt
1/2 to 1 t. curry powder

1 C. (240 ml) medium or coarse cornmeal (polenta)

Fresh herb sprigs, such as parsley, rosemary, or oregano
Tomato slices or cherry tomatoes

Put frozen peas into a medium-size bowl and thaw by pouring water
over them to cover. Set aside.
Combine onions, garlic, peppers, Veggie Ham, oregano, Bragg Liquid
Aminos, and 1/2 C. (120 ml) water in a large, deep skillet. Cook over
high heat, stirring frequently until softened, about 10 minutes. Set
aside.
Combine the 4 C. (1 liter) water, soymilk, salt, and curry powder in
a 4-quart (4 liter) saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat,
uncovered. Watch carefully to prevent boil-over. Add cornmeal to
boiling mixture and turn heat down slightly. Boil gently, stirring
frequently, until thickened to the consistency of thick oatmeal,
about 10 minutes. Taste to see that cornmeal is fully cooked and
soft.
Add cooked vegetables and ham to the polenta, drain and add peas, and
stir to distribute ingredients evenly.
Spoon or pour into a 5-cup (1 liter + 240 ml) ring mold or an 8-inch
(20 cm) square Pyrex baking dish, and refrigerate for 1 hour to firm
up.
Reheat briefly by covering with aluminum foil, dull side up, and
warming in the oven at 350 F. (Gas Mark 4) for 12 to 15 minutes.
Unmold onto an attractive serving dish.
Garnish by arranging herb sprigs around the outer edge. Arrange
tomato slices or cherry tomatoes on top of herbs. Makes 6 to 8
servings.
NOTE: To reheat next day: Gently sprinkle the top of the polenta with
water, cover with aluminum foil, dull side up, and heat at 350 F.
(Gas Mark 4) for about 20 to 25 minutes. If you've chilled the
Curried Ham Polenta in a Pyrex baking dish, reheat by starting it in
a cold oven to prevent the dish from cracking.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------

Enjoy the pungent flavors of this sweet-and-sour entre accompaniment
that adds flavor balance to the savory dishes on this festive Easter
menu.

PEAR AND RAISIN CHUTNEY

3 bosc or other firm pears
1/4 C. (60 ml) black raisins
1/4 C. (60 ml) golden raisins
3 cloves garlic cut in half lengthwise
1-inch (2.5 cm) piece of ginger, peeled and thinly sliced
1/4 t. salt
1/8 t. cayenne
1 C. (240 ml) apple cider vinegar
1 C. (240 ml) evaporated cane juice

Cut pears in half lengthwise and remove seeds and stem. Cut into
crosswise slices 1/4-inch (.5 cm) thick and put them into a 4-quart
(4 liter) saucepan.
Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil, uncovered, over high
heat.
Turn heat down to medium-high and simmer 15 to 20 minutes, stirring
frequently. Cool completely before refrigerating. Makes about 3 cups
(720 ml).
NOTE: For a sweeter chutney, add 1/4 C. (60 ml) additional evaporated
cane juice.

QUICK 'N TASTY BEANS

With the complexity of bringing together a festive meal, you will
appreciate the simplicity of this dish that has hidden rewards. The
earthiness of the garlic, cooked briefly with the tomatoes, adds such
pleasing flavors you'll welcome this easy recipe into your
repertoire.

1 3/4 lbs. (790 g) Roma tomatoes (Italian plum) chopped
6 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 C. (120 ml) water
2 1-lb. (450 g) cans black beans, drained and rinsed
Salt and pepper to taste

Combine tomatoes, garlic, and water in a large skillet, and cook over
high heat, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes.
Add beans to skillet, season to taste, and cook 5 to 6 minutes.
Adjust seasonings if needed. Serves 6.

----------

Those inevitable sweet cravings can be quickly sated with this
delightful confection that keeps well for two to three weeks in the
refrigerator.

PISTACHIO PEANUT BONBONS

1 C. (240 ml) chopped pitted prunes
1/2 C. (120 ml) chunky peanut butter
1/4 C. (60 ml) + 2 T. maple syrup
3/4 C. (180 ml) Fearn's Soya Powder*
2 T. vegan carob or chocolate chips, chopped

1/4 C. (60 ml) coarsely chopped raw pistachios or chopped salted
peanuts

Combine the prunes, peanut butter, maple syrup, Soya Powder, and
carob chips in a large bowl and mix well to combine all ingredients.
You'll be employing a little muscle power when the mixture becomes
thick, but it's important to distribute ingredients evenly.
Put chopped pistachios in a separate bowl.
Using a teaspoon of the prune, peanut butter mixture, roll into small
balls. Dip one side into chopped pistachios and place on an
attractive serving dish. Serve immediately or cover with plastic wrap
and chill for serving the following day. Makes about 20 bonbons.
*Soya powder is made from soy flour that has been cooked. The texture
is lighter and finer than soy flour and leaves no aftertaste.

VARIATION:

Spread a piece of waxed paper, about 25-inches (65 cm) long,
horizontally on the countertop. Spread pistachios along the center,
horizontally.
Pile prune, peanut butter mixture onto the waxed paper and form a
long roll, about 18-inches (45 cm) long and 1-inch to 1 1/2-inches
(2.5 cm to 3.5 cm) in diameter, covering the surface with the
pistachios.
Fold waxed paper to cover roll and twist the ends to seal. Wrap in
plastic wrap to retain the moisture. Chill for several hours.
To serve, cut into slices about 1/4" to 3/8" thick (.5 cm to .7cm).
Refrigerated it keeps for 2 to 3 weeks. Makes about 15 to 20 slices.

What a farce, says
animal protestors

ANIMAL rights campaigners demonstrated outside a court as one of their
members appeared in the dock accused of harassing directors of a chemical
company.

Campaigners held up large banners and posters at Fleetwood Magistrates'
Court yesterday to support Linda Furness, 54, who had been charged with
harassing directors at F2 Chemicals in Preston, a sister company to
Thornton-based AG Fluoropolymers. Mrs Furness, of Margate, Kent, was accused
of sending 16 e-mails to F2 Chemicals over a three-month period regarding
testing on animals. But she walked free from court yesterday after
magistrates dismissed the case.

Speaking after being released from court, she said: "The only thing I was
guilty of was to send them an e-mail asking them if they would take some
time to look at the cruelty on a website themselves. "If saying please and
thank you causes that much distress to constitute harassment then, yes, I am
guilty.

"If I was going to harass someone, the e-mails would have been written
rudely with far stronger allegations. It's been a farce, start to finish."
Mrs Furness was angry that she had been forced to travel 300 miles, pay for
overnight accommodation, only for the case to be dropped because the
six-month deadline had been exceeded since the charge was brought. She
added: "It's a disgusting waste of police time and money and a waste of my
time and money.

Two officers from Fleetwood came all the way down to my house in Kent - just
imagine how much that cost. Six policemen searched my home for evidence and
there wasn't any. "They only did this because it's such a political issue
and they want to keep us quiet. You don't get this sort of treatment for
murder." Demonstrators from Fleetwood Animal Rights Alliance said they were
protesting against the criminalisation of the right to protest against AG
Fluoropolymers.

They claim the firm, based on the Hillhouse site in Thornton, has links to
notorious animal testing laboratory Huntingdon Life Sciences - link
strenuously denied by the firm's Japanese owners. Regular protests have
taken place over the last year outside the Thornton works. Campaigner Martin
Watson said: "The police and the company are treating us as criminals
without us having broken any laws."

Dear all,
I have attached below a letter that has been written to 60 minutes. This
letter requests that 60 Minutes help us air the true reality of the cruelty
in this country. I myself have already sent video footage, interviews by
Sunan images and my radio interview to this show with a similar letter as
you read below. This show will have a greater chance of listening to our
plea if many people write in to them to.

Please if you can take the time to copy this letter and ammend it to your
thoughts and feelings about this issue it may help get this issue more
widely in the Media.

2.
Chiwon (female Korean Dog) was rescued early this year by KAPS volunteers.
This dog you can see on our website on the photos page (KAPS Page 2 ) Its
was left for a week under a bridge with its leg tied above its head and its
foot had swollen up disfigured. From the pictures you can see the shocking
pain it must have endured.
Now Chiwon is well on recovery mode and can walk almost properly now with
great medical treatement and love and care.

Here is the letter below to 60 minutes
Thank you all for your great help.
Regards
Laura Teresa

Dear Executive Media Officer,

The purpose of this letter is to request media coverage, by your
highly revered contemporary news programme, of the issue of the dog and cat
meat trade in South Korea.
Coverage of this topic now is more important than ever given that the South
Korean Government is seeking to pass an amendment to the existing 1991
Animal Protection legislation that will serve only to strengthen the
viability of this market. The existing legislation is almost never enforced
and breaches of its provisions, without consequence, are widespread and
commonplace. The amendment is scheduled for passage as soon as May 2004
rendering immediate action imperative and your help in raising public
awareness invaluable.

The proposed legislative amendment is marketed by the South Korean
Government as a method of strengthening South Korean animal welfare, whilst
also providing for the enforcement of existing provisions outlined in the
current legislation. The Korean government notes that their motivation for
this reform is to improve their public image and the related perceptions
held by the international community. At face value, the legislation could
be interpreted as a step in the right direction and this may explain the
apparent endorsement by a few major animal rights groups. However, on
closer examination the amendment will provide a mechanism to allow the
tortuously cruel slaughter of animals to not only continue, but also
flourish. Further, the amendment effectively removes any avenues for
recourse relating to punishment for cases of animal cruelty. Any support of
such amendment is therefore uninformed and misguided.

The amendment seeks, via ambiguous wording, to distinguish between pet
animals and food animals. Implicitly, this will mean that animals bred
for any intention other than companionship will not be protected by
amended legislation. This distinction can be applied arbitrarily by anyone
who abuses animals for their own self-serving purposes and hence they will
be able to escape punishment under the legislation. Inextricably, this
stance by the Korean government demonstrates an intention for the future of
domestic animals as being other than for the purposes of companionship eg
for food or otherwise. I am of the belief that companionship (as
exemplified by loyalty and yearning for love) of all domestic animals is an
undeniable trait. Humans over the centuries have selected animals based on
these characteristics for breeding and hence natural selection has produced
domesticated species with low
thresholds to pain and fear. This, in my belief, distinguishes dogs and
cats from other livestock as unfit for human consumption.
Furthermore, intuition and documentary evidence suggests that consumption of
carnivores at relatively high levels of the food chain, such as dogs and
cats, may have major health implications with respect to new diseases and
viruses.

Dog meat is consumed in the belief that doing so will enhance
Male virility. Consequently it is regarded as an aphrodisiacal delicacy
favoured mostly by wealthy older Korean males. It is believed that up to
three million dogs and cats are slaughtered each year in South Korea. The
animals are tortured during slaughter (hung, beaten, blowtorched,
electrocuted ALIVE for hours in front of hundreds of other animals awaiting
the same fate) in the belief that flow of adrenaline to the muscle enhances
such properties. Cats are also boiled alive slowly and pets are stolen
and sold on this ILLEGAL market. Treatment of animals during rearing stages
is equally as abhorrent with dogs piled on top of each other in cages
without food, water or room to stand. It is common for dogs to have their
eardrums pierced to render them deaf. There is substantial documentary and
photographic evidence available regarding the prevalence of such practice in
Korea. These abuses are happening right now despite being outlawed by
Korean legislation and are allowed to continue.

Koreans and members of the Korean government have been documented as
claiming dog consumption as their cultural right. Research I have done
indicates that this is indeed a fallacy. This practice began out of
necessity created by famine in the post-Korean War period and even then it
was a vice of older males concerned about their sexual potency.

Culture in my opinion implies a lengthier period of tradition than is
indicative of this somewhat modern fad. Irrespective of what time period
constitutes culture, culture should never justify animal
cruelty on any level EVER. In the event of the culture argument holding
true, the Koreans should be totally ashamed that their beliefs seek to
legitimise animal cruelty of unimaginable proportions. Passage of this
amendment will also send a signal to other Asian nations who have outlawed
dog and cat consumption that this practice is more internationally
acceptable. Further, it is interesting to note that the majority of Koreans
do not condone this activity yet the Korean government has ignored local
protests and petitions involving tens of thousands of individuals against
the practice. It seems that the perceptions of the international community
will have the greatest clout.

During the lead-up to the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the Korean Government
effectively eradicated the practice of dog and cat consumption in
recognition of the damage this practice would have on its reputation in the
international arena. However, the trade has been able to re-establish
itself by virtue of the corrupt government and the magnitude of the
profitability of the industry. It is no secret that money buys power as
exemplified by many senior Korean government officials not only secretly
condoning the practice of dog consumption but also regularly engaging in it.
Corruption within the Korean government has been well documented and as
such it is interesting to note the recent impeachment of the South Korean
President, Roh Moo-hyun, based on electoral fraud.
Whilst this charge is being heralded a misdemeanour, I am of the
Belief that where there is smoke, there is fire and corruption of ample
proportions.

Please consider the points I have raised in my discussion on
this topic. This is a mere nutshell version of the atrocities that are
being committed against animals in South Korea. Humans have a
consciousness and most are capable of distinguishing between appropriate and
unethical behaviour. You do not have to be an animal lover to appreciate
that it is nobodys cultural right to inflict suffering on another living
thing.

We can lobby the governments everywhere to put pressure on South Korea to
make changes they will listen because they care about what other nations
think of them as shown in the past. They have eradicated it before for
economic reasons and they can do it again. We have to make outlawing of
this trade the only option for them.

I refer you to our website for further information
www.dogaid.freeservers.com and also www.koreananimals.org.

I strongly urge you to take the time to view the footage and consider taking
further investigation into this issue. There are thousands of Australians
that feel very strongly about this and want this barbaric trade to end.

I

Yours faithfully,

Please cross post to all animal lovers that care!!!
This lady is advertising a new designer dog, She is breeding poodles with schnauzers calling them schnoodles and poodles with labs calling them labradoodles.
I feel this is really a problem when you can go to any shelter and find these kind of mixes. She is creating over population by force breeding these 3 kinds of dogs and then charging money for it. For every pup she sells that is one less chance a dog from a shelter or rescue  will get adopted. She must be stopped.
Please call her and tell her to quit adding to the over population problems and remind her of the thousands of animals that get euthanized on a daily basis.
Her name is Susan Gallihugh Her phone is 540-987-8065 she lives in Sperryville, VA
And here is another one advertising for Schnoodles their phone is 434-349-3854 they are charging people 400.00 dollars!!
Thank you.
Cindy
