Karen, thank you for posting this. It is an extremely important issue that most people are interested in., but if it isn't kept in the top of mind awareness of the consumer, so soon they forget....

Dogs born in puppy mills and dogs used as merchandise in puppy mills are without a doubt some of the most mistreated beings on earth. Dogs offer so much. They have the ability to live in our homes, become a part of our family, and there is no companion animal on earth than could ever challenge the friendship a dog can offer... and the puppy mills capitalize on this. The key to stopping them is to only get your pure bred dogs from a reputable breeder who has the breeds best interest at heart (breeding to avoid genetic diseases, bad temperament, etc.) and never under any circumstances buy a puppy at a pet store. If you are interested in a mixed breed or just simply cannot afford the dog you would really like to have, go to a local shelter and look for a dog with some of the characteristics that you would like to have..

Not buying a puppy from a pet store has always been a double edged sword for me, because I know those little dogs deserve a loving home as much as the rest of them. But the fact of the matter is, most pet store pups come from puppy mills. Most of the puppy mills in the U.S. are located in Lancaster Penn. and are run by the Amish. It is a true crime against mans best friend. The only way to stop them is to quit buying puppies supplied by them. If there is no demand then the supply will go away as well. (The majority of puppy mill dogs are so poorly bred, they come with no pedigree, no real background, and many are little mixed breeds being sold at astronomical prices. And to top it off , most are in ill health, suffer so many genetic illnesses that could have been prevented by good breeding)

People who love dogs really need to start holding reputable breeders in high esteem. They most often want the very best for their puppies. I used to breed dogs and I would call, follow up, and keep track of all of my puppies. It was so hard to let them go, I was attached to each and everyone of them. I knew in my heart though that I was able to provide a family or a person with a healthy sound pet that they could take to agility classes or enter in the show ring or just sit around the house with. All of my dogs were beautiful, smart, healthy, wonderful companions. Then, you have on the other hand the puppy mills. God have mercy on those poor souls.

I would advise everyone to do their research on puppy mills. What you will find will break your heart in two. Educate everyone you know about it. Back some ten years ago they were in the news, it's kind of died down now, but this atrocity is still going on, so, it just might be time to bring it back into the forefront of the U.S. consumers attention.

So, many times every day for the entire month of May go to google.com and type "puppymills" in the search box. Of course there is not really a word "puppymills" but if enough people use it then perhaps Meriam Webster will add it to the dictionary, and it's still a valid search term on Google. You can also use "puppy mills" with a space between the words. But be sure to search "puppymills" first though. Maybe puppymills will be the most searched term and puppy mills will be second! Click on some of the links if you want but you don't have to for the search to be counted. There are lots and lots of wonderful factual websites about puppymills so you might want to check them out.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Foster Parrots Ltd and The Angry Parrot Inc. announce a boycott of
Petsmart for contributing to a homeless parrot crisis and lack of proper
care of all the animals in the stores.

Foster Parrots, the nations largest parrot rescue, adoption and
sanctuary located in Rockland, MA is well known nationwide for having a
firm stance against the pet trade and in the Petno campaign.

Petno, a campaign launched by PETA, (People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals), is dedicated to stopping live animal sales at Petco.  Foster
Parrots has been the most vocal group to dedicate themselves to this
campaign.  Forbes magazine mentioned our protests and Pet Age, (a pet
retailer magazine) recently printed an article titled "The Growing
Anti-Bird Movement."  Numerous references to the activist work we are
doing are mentioned and our protests have also been printed in 7 local
newspapers.

The Angry Parrot Inc is a new Animal Rights Organization as well as a
parrot sanctuary.  Our slogan is "The Pet Trade BITES and we are biting
BACK!"  A website is pending.

Ten activists holding signs against the sale of animals at Petsmart
lined the parking lot today in Braintree.  This is the nations first
protest against this pet store chain and we expected the initial
response to be similar to what we saw when we first began protesting
against Petco, a negative public response.  The public is now supportive
of our protesting against Petco but this took some time.  When we began
protesting Petco in 2003 people would question us, drive by screaming
obscenities and give us "the finger". We expected this reaction today,
yet this was not the case.

The public was cheering, beeping, waving and giving us a thumbs up as
they drove past.  Some shoppers leaving Petsmart paused to speak to us
and said they will never shop there again.  They were given brochures to
a pet store chain which does not sell animals, Especially for Pets.

Could it be that the public is slowly becoming aware that selling
animals in retail is unethical?  Perhaps, and we simply need to educate
consumers to shop for pet supplies at stores such as Especially For Pets.

Time to re-do the Petno Van to include PetsMILLS.  Or PetsCRAP,we're
voting on the campaign name. Suggestions and opinions are welcomed!

Did you know that if your animal were to suffer an
extreme "emergency", most veterinarians will not lift a finger to
help your animal unless you can pay UPFRONT, the FULL cost of your
animal's visit?  These veterinarians will not even consider allowing
you to create an account with them so that you can make monthly
payments, until the account is paid off.  Not every pet owner is so
financially well-off to pay the full cost upfront.  Should the animal
needlessly suffer because of this?
Please read and sign this petition in support of an "Animal Emergency
Law" that will prohibit veterinarians from turning away any animal in
need of emergency care due to the owner's inability to pay UPFRONT
and IN-FULL the cost of that visit, and will enable the owner to
create an account in which to make monthly payments to pay off that

How can a company sink so low …?

It seems that Iams officials have a lot more that they're trying to hide. And who can blame them?

During one recent study that took place at Auburn University, Iams researchers divided 32 Great Dane puppies into three groups. They killed two puppies from each group at 4, 6, and 12 months of age to study the effects of adding calcium and phosphorous to their food. They killed the remaining puppies when they were 18 months old.

The experiment was documented by Iams in a paper entitled "Influence of Dietary Calcium and Phosphorous Content in a Fixed Ratio on Growth and Development in Great Danes," published in the July 2002 edition of the American Journal of Veterinary Research (63:7, 1036-1047). We called Iams officials to ask them to tell us when the Great Dane puppies were killed, but they refused. Remember, in its June 2001 policy, Iams swore that it would never conduct experiments that resulted in the death of any animal.

Two scientists involved in the study, Allan J. Lepine and Gregory A. Reinhart, are high-ranking Iams experimenters with long histories of performing cruel and deadly experiments on animals.

Why does Iams keep these and so many other animal experimenters on staff? And why did Iams recently hire Dr. Glen Hoffsis, another animal experimenter, as its director of veterinary services?

The answer may lie in a statement given by Dan Carey, Iams' director of technical communications, at an industry forum, in which he stated that Iams would continue laboratory experiments on animals.

Please tell Mr. Carey ( dan.carey@... ) that Iams must end all laboratory studies on animals and conduct only in-home studies with dogs and cats who are volunteered by their guardians. Even more importantly, if you are buying Iams food for your animal companions or if anyone you know is doing so, please stop or ask them to stop, and make sure that Iams knows that you're no longer buying while animals are dying.
