UP TO $495 IF YOU DON'T PICK UP POOP
in Long Beach
Typically, the fines are set by the courts as this is a criminal citation at
the moment. The typical fine is $100 per count plus court fees (so an
average of $395 to $495), however it is the judge that decides each fine.
All the money goes to the County Court system at the moment. The
City of Long Beach will be bringing changes to the municipal code before
council on July 14, 2009 (est) that would change these to administrative
citations. This is more like a parking ticket and would be $100, $200 and
$500 per violation without the courts (unless it is elevated by the
Prosecutor). All revenues go back to support enforcement. - John Keisler,
Bureau Manager, City of Long Beach Animal Care Services

additional fee or deposit is required. Motel 6's pet policy is also well
established; the chain has been welcoming pets since 1962. The other hotels
that rank among Petside.com's Top Five Pet-Friendly Budget Hotel Chains are La
Quinta Inns & Suites, Red Roof Inn, Best Western and Candlewood

Happy 8th Birthday to the Dog Beach in Long Beach.
--- Donna Littlejohn, South Bay Pets blog
And kudos especially to Justin Rudd and Rosie and
everyone else who made this possible eight years ago. It was the
culmination of much hard work and patience.
On June 24, 2001, for the first time in
more than 30 years, dogs were permitted to play along the water's edge on a
stretch of beach in Long Beach.
It was a pilot program in which the city
agreed to let dogs onto the beach on one Sun. a month through the summer of
2003.
Things went so well that on Oct. 31, 2004,
the Long Beach City Council unanimously approved the permanent Dog Beach Zone
in the South Bay's neighboring city to the south east.
Now, owners can off-leash their dogs (one dog
per person) on a 3-acre stretch near Belmont Shore year-round.
If you haven't been there, check it out. You
and your dog will have a blast. There are cones on either side to designate the
dog-friendly area, so be sure your canine comes when called and won't run off
as there are no fences.
I took my Australian
shepherd Pilgrim there two summers ago when a friend came in from Colorado with
her dog, Hawkeye, and wanted to take her dog to the beach.
I'll never forget how thrilled Pilgrim was to
be there -- up and down the shoreline he raced, practically smiling all
the way as he felt the wet sand on his paws, sometimes chasing his ball, other
times just enjoying the running for the heck of it. This was during the period
when he was being treated for diabetes (insulin shots twice a day). Only a
couple months later, in Sept. 2007, he was struck with complications and I had
to make that final decision to put him down (he was 8).
But I'll always be grateful he had that
carefree afternoon at the Dog Beach. I still smile just thinking about the
memory. I'm just sorry I didn't think to bring a camera that day.
So thanks, Justin, and the city of Long
Beach.
Check
out the Dog Beach Zone web
page to find out all the details, where to park, what the rules are -- and
watch a fun video of Justin with his English Bulldog Rosie on the first day at
dog beach.
Maybe I'll get there this summer again with
Tess and/or Cowboy, my border collies.

20 New Bikes Given Out At Fourth Parade
By Kurt Helin, Grunion Gazette
The Fourth of July is going to feel like Christmas for some lucky
children. At Justin Rudd's annual Fourth of July Bike Parade, more than
20 low-income youth will be given bicycles and get to take part in the event.
Those youth also will get helmets and locks for their bikes.
Then those youth will peddle off with the more than 100 other youngsters
expected to take part in the annual parade, said Rudd, who organizes the
event. Youth from all over the city decorate their bikes with
flags, red, white and blue streamers and balloons, and just about everything
else patriotic. Then they parade the bikes down the beach bike
path. This year, that parade will be led by Long Beach Police bike
patrol officers Karen Dougherty and Johnny Dodson, Rudd said.
There will be cash prizes in a number of different categories, Rudd said.
The event is free and open to the public. Everything starts at 10 a.m. at the
Granada Beach boat launch ramp area. The parade route travels east down the
beach bike path to Bay Shore Avenue, where everybody turns around and heads
back. The entire trip is about two miles. Youth participants
have to wear a helmet and have to be escorted by an adult during the parade,
Rudd said. Parents also will have to sign a liability waiver. Motorized
scooters are not permitted as part of the event. Parents can
pre-register their children for the event by e-mailing Justin@..., then just sign
the waiver at the event. The event is being put on by Rudd's
Community Action Team. Gazette Newspapers is sponsoring the
event. For more information, log on to www.justinrudd.com. (Also, Jones Bicycles
has donated a full-size beach cruiser that will be given away via raffle after
the parade. Raffle tix are $1 each at the event.)
re. dog with skin problems scratching
until it bleeds:
My 11yr old female Yorkie/chih mix is dying
from Congestive heart failure and also has very bad skin problem…and she
can't have the usual medicines to treat her due to her heart condition. She
always had bad skin itching, biting, paws, legs, butt area, nonstop scratching,
and ear infections but this is has been the worst year ever. Her skin was
COVERED with bumps. I tried changing foods but that takes WEEKS to rule out
what the ingredient culprit is not to mention causes stomach upset when
changing foods to often. Tried various types of medicated, anti-itch
shampoos/conditioners, topical sprays, steroids etc… nothing
worked! I finally took her to Animal Dermatology Clinic in Tustin, CA and
saw Dr. Colleen Mendelsohn, she was wonderful! I explained my financial
hardship situation and the heart condition, so we started with the basic skin
and ear swab testing and it came back positive for Staph infection
(Staphylococcus, a group of bacteria commonly found on the skin) and yeast ear
infection. We were prescribed Tresaderm for the ears and 3 weeks of Simplicef
anti-biotics for her skin (made her vomit a coupe of times but it worked),
special shampoo only from the dermatologist ChlorhexiDerm Maximum 4% Shampoo,
and Malaseb wipes for continuous care keeps the bacteria from growing again.
You can these products online for less. Must wash for 15 mins, 2-3x a
week) and MUST have a good skin conditioner. I bought Biogroom oatmeal cream
rinse conditioner $11.99 PetSmart. I also gave her over the counter
generic drug store brand chlor-trimeton 4mg tab cut into ¼ and gave that 1-2x a
day to also help control allergies & itching. My dogs skin
improved almost immediately. Itching, scratching, and completely bumb free. She's
resting comfortably now. I highly recommend the dermatology center. Even though
it cost me $250 it was worth it for my dogs comfort and sanity. I still use the
shampoo and conditioner and wipes 2x week and she's going great! She's also
currently on Frontline Plus for flea control. - Christina Salaverria
