Quigley, the bureau's chief of operations.

A dog belonging to the CEO of the Richmond, Va., Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals died after accidentally being left alone for four hours in
her hot car.
We told you last
month about Cotton, the L.A. dog whose aggression issues
led
his owner, Diane Krieger, to look for a solution in the form of an unorthodox
procedure called canine disarming. To "disarm" a dog prone to
biting, a veterinary dentist (in this case, Manhattan Beach-based Dr. David
Nielsen) removes a few millimeters of its canine teeth using a CO2 laser --
with the end result being an animal that might still bite, but is likely to
cause less damage than it would with its fangs intact. - L.A. Times

Care Services Chief Optimistic Despite Budget Cuts
LBReport.com -- LB's Animal Care Services chief plans to do more work with less
money in FY10 which starts Oct. 1. Bureau Manager John Keisler says his
budget belt will tighten by 9 percent, or $300,000, forcing him to cut one
clerk-typist and one animal care attendant.

"HAUTE DOGS" DONATES $16,000 FOR
SPAY/NEUTER
PROGRAM
Long Beach Animal Care Services now has $16,000 worth of spay/neuter vouchers
for local residents. This program will provide one $100 canine spay
and neuter vouchers to the first (200) Long Beach residents who get their
dogs fixed at any of approx. 10 participating Long Beach-area veterinary
clinics. Funds for the program were raised at the annual Bulldog Beauty
Contest and Haute Dog Howl'oween Parade. To receive a voucher, dog owners
must be Long Beach area residents and show proof of residence (see Web
site). Here's how to get a voucher while they last:

In person: Animal Care Services (at the spcaL.A. Companion Animal Village) at
7700 E. Spring St., Long Beach, CA 90815 (must show proof of residence)

By Mail: Please call (562) 570-PETS (7387). The voucher will be mailed
only to the address of record. The veterinary hospital will require proof
of identification before accepting the voucher.

In the Field: Animal Control Officers may also distribute vouchers as
needed. Proof of City residence must be provided.

Beach Animal Care Services is open to the public Wed. through Friday, from 10
am to 5:30 p.m., and Sat. and Sun. from 10 am to 4 p.m. Closed on Monday,
