Spring has sprung   Message List

Whew, this spring has been a busy one already! My husband Dave and I
just got home with our 3 newly adopted kids from Haiti in January. The
kids are twin boys almost 6 and their 4 year old sister. I started
back to the goat farm not long after returning from Haiti. Our new
children enjoy helping me feed in the baby barn (milking is just too
complicated with the kids right now). The boys started kindergarten
about a month after we got home and since I feed while the boys are in
school, we have to stop by to visit every now and then, or the boys
miss the goats too much! ( It is true, they tell me so!)

Things were pretty calm in the barn once we began working in January,
all the older baby goats, Magoo the donkey, a few sheep, everyone
seamed just fine from when I was away in Haiti. George and Janey did
a great job, I think the goats hardly missed me at all ...then.... all
the early spring births started!!! There was a real flood for a while
but that group is now done. We have about 50 babies from our Moms and
just to keep me out of trouble George has gotten 13 more doe kids from
another farm, and more to come!

We feed them now in buckets with nipples attached. Most are feeding
really well this way, only a couple of the really little new kids from
the other farm need a bottle still. But what is with those baby bucks?
They seam to be the hardest to train to the bucket!

Most of the first batch of baby bucks has been trundled off to the
auction, only about 6 or so left for now. We have the most cutest
matched pair of Nubian boys that are a grizzled multi color. George
is concidering making them wethers and keeping them around for the
petting zoo at the cheese plant. I suggested training them for cart
rides, but I may regret this suggestion as I might have to be the one
to train them then... are all Nubians such lunk heads? These two boys
are a bit thick... all looks, no brains!

In a few weeks our next batch of does will be starting to birth...
just once we have caught our breaths!!!! Here they come!

I will be getting some new pictures on the website soon!
Anita
