Our group moderators have personal experience with managing severe symptoms of a liver shunt or liver disease thatmay cause hepatic encephalopathy. We will help you control symptoms of liver dysfunction )including urate stones) with specific advice about proper nutrition, supplements and prescription medications. In order to control severe symptoms of liver problems,(which may include seizures) counting protein grams and feeding multiple, small meals of vegetarian protein are very important.
Advice is based on members own experience in controlling symptoms successfully. This group is not intended to replace the advice of a vet and suggestions should be checked with your vet prior to being implemented;however, most vets do not 'prescribe' supplements or amounts.
The 10 breeds with the greatest proportions of diagnoses of liver shunt are the Havanese, Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Pug, Skye Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, longhaired Chihuahua, Scottish Deerhound and Standard Schnauzer. Liver shunt also occurs in the Hovawart and Tennessee Treeing Brindle Coonhound. Other breeds that are significantly over-represented include the Silky Terrier, Australian Cattle Dog, Bichon Frise, Shih Tzu, Miniature Schnauzer, Border Collie, Jack Russell Terrier, Irish Wolfhound and Himalayan cat. These breeds should be given a serum Bile Acid Test to check liver function, as often the only symptom is chronic urinary tract infections, urinary crystals or bladder stones.
