It sounds as though there was a partial placental separation, which can
sometimes happen as a result of placentitis or other uterine attachment
failure. If there was any question of placentitis-like abnormality of
the placenta, you might want to discuss the use of prophylactic
antibiotic therapy for the foal, especially as you indicate that it may
not be as robust as you are used to. That lack of size may also be
associated with a uterine/placental attachment issue as well.
