Day old foal with diarrhea and cramps   Message List

Our new foal was born Sun morning without any problems.
We have followed everything as close to the book as possible.

This was this mares first foal and we were giving her plenty of feed
with some alfala hay.
I made sure I got plenty of iodine on her umbical cord.
The filly nursed a lot on Sunday.
She had a BM on her own so we never gave any enema. It was not loose
but it was not yellowish mostly brown. Or what I saw was brown.

Yesterday in the late afternoon we went out for a check on them and
the foal was scouring.
I had called my vet on Sunday for him to come by and look things over
but it was going to be in the late afternoon before he could get by.
I had a appt that took up most of the day but my husband was here and
looked after them until he went to work in around 3:pm.

When I got home I was tired so I didn't get the call made for the vet
to do a mare foal check up.
It was later around 8:00 that I saw these scours.
I called the vet as soon as I saw these scours and he was out on a
call and told me to give pepto bismol or kiaopectate.
I gave her pepto and she started to lay down and roll.
This was thrashing and I immediately called him.
When he got here and checked her over she did not have any temp and
was not dehydrated but full of gas and diarrhea that was just water.
He gave her banamine first and waited but she was still in pain.
He tubed her with mineral oil after watching her for about 45 minutes.
He gave her probotics and after all this she was still not feeling
much better.
He didn't think she had any bacterial infections and everything looked
good but her stomach cramps is the way he referred to it.
He thought she had gorged herself with milk and then had
some "lactrose interolance" he would not call it colic.

She did get to feeling some better she would nurse and then lay back
down without thrashing.
He was here for a couple of hours and that was around 2:am this
morning.
Our checks since then she will nurse and then lay down.
I have not raised a foal in almost 20 years should I be worried?
I don't know this vet since I only moved here a while back but their
clinic is just equine.
Is there anything that might cause this beside what he mentioned that
she over ate and gave herself the gas and diarrhea?

I ask about the mares milk being to rich and he didn't think so.
I sprayed the stall with bleach twice and bedded with straw before she
was born.
Thanks for any replies I hope I have given accurate details.

Sandy

... Ummm.... YES! How was it determined that the vet "didn't think she had a bacterial infection"? In view of the symptoms, that would be likely to be one of ...
