I had written into the group earlier this breeding season about a
friends mare who had an extreme growth of strep zo. She was then
treated while in heat with NAXCIL infusion, iodine infusion, NAXCIL
infusion, iodine infusion, NAXCIL infusion, and then iodine again.
She was recultured and it came up clean. So they bred her.
She came up open two cycles.
So they decided to culture her again, and in the mean time, they bred
her this morning, then flushed her 4 hours later with saline and
oxytocin shot. Well, the culture came back this afternoon with a
moderate growth of Strep Zo and she is about to have a heart attack!
The vet says he thinks its strange a young mare, 5 or 6 I think, isnt
fighting this off better on her own, and I think she said he
suggested treating her for 5 days with NAXCIL only.
So does she HAVE to be in heat to treat her? Or could they treat her,
NOW at the end of her heat cycle, having to do the last treatment or
two when she is out of heat?
And IF they can and do treat her NOW, My question to her was, what if
the mare ovulates tonight or tomorrow and she got pregnant? Is that
possible?
Does this treatment sound right to you Jos?
THANK YOU! She called so upset, I said in the mean time to her
talking to the vet again, Im sure I can get some input on here.
