When I couldn't find Manzi for a bit of time while he was out, I got very scared
and began to think it is not worth it. But, once he came back to me I felt more
confident again, the only problem is I remember being scared.
Thanks for all of the advice. I was worried that I would get scolded for my poor
training skills and that everyone would agree that I should quit due to my
endangering Manzi. I never want to hurt Manzi as he is so dear to me. While he
was out yesterday a man asked me, "Will you feel good about yourself if he gets
eaten by a hawk because you let him fly outside just because he likes to do so?"
The reason I was letting Manzi play in the tree so much is because 1) He was
missing wing feathers and I still wanted to let him outside (although now he is
flying just fine) and 2) He loves playing in the tree so I thought it helps to
make him excited to go outside.
Maybe I should have a new plan that consists of point A to B flights and indoor
recalls. Since he has not done very many of those, I think I will start with
only doing 3 at a time and keep the distance to 10-15 feet. Before he ever broke
any flight feathers he was doing quite a few A to B flights up to 50 or 75 feet.
The only problem is at those longer distances he would miss more than half and
either circle around or land low in a tree and then fly down. I was probably
pushing the distance too quickly (we went from 10 to 75 feet within about 5
days). I'll go much more slowly and maybe keep these very close flights for a
week or so while building up to doing more than three. How does that plan sound?
Any recommendations?
I feel like I am always making new plans, but they don't always work or I am not
carrying them out correctly!
Those hawks arround scares me! It probably scares Manzi too. He would be more confortable if he was confident on his skills, which he isn't. Your experiences...
