I am not sure Tom. I am wondering the same thing.
Several people showed up on this list and never went through the
application process. I am supposed to approve an app before anyone
is subbed to this list.
It has to be some sort of problem with the list server but I still
haven't been
able to figure it out yet.

How in the world did I get on this list? I never signed up! It really
confused me at first, as I manage a SD list... Still's Disease. I do have a
German Shepherd, but don't know if I want to subscribe to this list. Maybe
I'll just hang in for awhile. Anybody know how I got here?

Hi Alisa
Welcome to the list, albeit a very quiet one. Sounds like you have
your hands full with your whole family. I've only got one german
shepherd, a 6 month old puppy called Gina, and sometimes she's quite
a handful - but she's wonderful. Yours must bring you a tremendous
amount of joy.

Hi! My name is Alisa Owens. I am proudly owned by 3 german shepherds!
Baron will be 5 in January 99, Duchess will be 3 in January 99 and Chief
will be 2 in May 99. Our household also includes my husband, Rob; 15 year
old Robby, Jr. and 13 year old Ashley (live with us part-time. They are
from Rob's 1st marriage); our 7 1/2 year old daughter, Erica and a cat
named Beauty. Oh, yea... I can't forget Beauty's 4 .. 2 week old babies.
There is always something going on at our house with one of the animals!
I would never trade any of my babies for anything in the world. GSD's are
absolutely amazing!!! I always know when I have company and Baron always
"tells" whenever Erica does anything wrong!!
I look forward to hearing from everyone!

Hi All,
How old is your puppy? I just got a Aussie who is 5 years old, who is very
Alpha, named
Starmist that has come to live with us for awhile. My problem wasn't my girls
snapping at
her, it was Starmist snapping at them. What I did was I'd say their names, &
I'd go to the
treat jar which they would follow me, & I would get 3 treats in my hand, while
talking to
them calmly. This would keep their attention on me & the treats. I would give
all 3 a treat at
the same time not using any commands at all just talking to them calmly praising
them, petting
them, playing with them alittle making it a fun experience for the 3 of them to
get treats
Together. If Starmist went to snap I'd sternly say "Starmist NO". With all the
fun going on a
stern no with a change in your voice, really stands out. The minute she looked
at me eye to
eye because of the word no I'd give her & the girls their treats. This is
teaching them to look
at me & pay attention to get their treat & not worry about who's next to them. I
got to the
point I could tell when Starmist was going to snap & I'd tell her no before she
did it. I did
this everyday for about a week. Now I have the 3 of them sitting & I'm throwing
in the word
"watch" while they are looking at me when I give them their treats & Starmist
doesn't snap at
the girls anymore. The girls already knew all this already but a refresher
course was fun for
them & me too.
Hope this helps. :-)
Sincerely,
B_Hanner@...

hello...
My puppy is a very submissive shepherd. My other dog is a terrier
cross, and she's a little bigger than a Maltese, and the two of them
seem to get on very well - the terrier clearly being the dominant
dog.
This doesn't shed any light on the original problem of snapping at
other dogs, but I tend to believe that with training and
perseverance, it could become more manageable. This puppy could have
also been permanently scarred, emotionally, because of the
appalling way the previous owner treated it.
I'm a novice shepherd owner, so I really don't know too much about
them. I can only draw on what I have learned about the way the
doggie-mind works in general.
Bronwyn
Shepherds want to be the domanant dog and if another doesn't want to submit
there will be a fight, unless with training from young on this trait is
removed. But I have had dogs were this couldn't be removed. Like people each
one is a little different. They can fight over who is going to be your number
one buddy too. I have gotton a black and blue knee over this.

Hello all,
My name is Andrea, and I have a german shepherd named Duke. I have been divorced
for 3 years, and got Duke for protection. He is one year old now, and is
beginning to sniff around me sexually. My boyfriend says that they can do some
things quite well, but I'm not so sure that I shouldn't get him fixed. Is there
anyone online that can help me decide ?

Hi All,
I didn't realize that my girl Utara even knew how to open anything, boy did
she surprise me.
I had to go into the hospital for surgery & left the girls with some friends of
mine who have a
kennel.
A week later we went to the kennels to get my girls. Utara opened her kennel
door & came
running to us much to the surprise of all of us. So now the world is her oyster,
she now opens
the front door & lets everybody out. Seeing how Utara & Shena are sisters I
figured it won't be
long before Shena figured it out also. I put a chain lock on the front door to
curve the problem
but now I feel like I'm being held prisoner in my own home LOL. Don't you just
love them! :-)

Hi! I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm new to this list. I have a 6 or
7yo GSD that I adopted from the pound about 5 years ago.
She's an angel and the love of my life! I've just found out that she has
Degenerative Myleopathy, so I'm doing all the fact finding and information
loading that I possible can. I've already been to the web site hosted by
Dr. Clemmons from University of Fla. and have her on his program. Any other
info, or advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Debbie and Shana

I just hope that dog doesn't have a criminal mind. If we find you murdered
some day I'm going to suggest to the cops that they check for paw prints.

Shadow is a great help when I have both hands full and want to leave the
garage, I just say " out" and he gets up on his hind feet, grabs the door
latch, unlatches it and backs on his hind feet and pulls the door open for me.
The porch door latch he knows he only has to poke with his nose and it will
open, I can lock it but with a claw he can unlock it. When I am welding in the
garage I put him in the Jeep, but he figures out how to unlatch the Jeep door
also. I put him in the pen outside and he unlatched that door also.. Some say
animals can't think but I call what Shadow does thinking :-))))
Ken
Hi Ken
Yes, I can identify very strongly with this problem. I have a
5-and-a-half month old gsd, and about 2 months ago she opened a door
for the first time, and has never looked back. She tends to only
open them if I'm on the other side, but she also does it when I'm at
work sometimes. As soon as I realised that she had worked out how
to open a door, I started locking them all the time.
I don't know if there's any way to stop them doing this? It gets
interesting when they've got muddy paws too!!
Bronwyn
Ken,
I have a almost year old shepard (f) named Mikah who opens doors with her
paws. At first I thought someone was letting her out, until i saw her do
it myself :) She is really smart. On the other hand my other shepard (m)
Jake is just the opposite, we can't even get him to speak with all the
treats in the world. We are hoping someday he picks up on Mikahs smarts.

I was wondering how many have a shepherd that likes to open doors with the
feet or the nose, mine has become an expert at opening a lot of doors and
other things, plus he likes to push things with his nose too.

Hi Everyone,
I guess I will add a short introduction too. We have 6 GSD's, 6 Chinese
Cresteds plus and assortment of other pets. I have owned GSD's for more than
20 years now. We have excellent bloodlines and show in confirmationand breed
occasionally. This is a hobby to us, not a business.

Jennifer,
I think this problem could be corrected with strick, positive re-inforcement
training. Of all of the money I have spent in GSD's, the money I spent at a
Hall Keyes Seminar on behavioral training was the most rewarding. Hall Keyes
lives in Greensboro, NC on Martin Luther King Blvd. (sorry I don't have the
number, but it is listed in the directory). You may want to just give him a
call and maybe he can help you somewhat over the phone.

Hi All,
Guess I will introduce myself also & my girls. I have 2 German Shepherds
named Utara & Shena.
They are sisters. What one doesn't think of the other does & their a year apart
too. The girls live
with us as family dogs along with working towards our first leg towards a CD. I
will be breeding them later after I learn more how to do it right. I am working
closely with the kennel I bought them from so I can learn every detail.
Nice meeting you all. :-)

Hi,
WOW! Finally this list is coming alive. My name is Dee and I only have one
GSD. Until the time that she picked me I had Rottweilers, at a trial one day
this cute little GSD came up to me and crawled in my lap, she did this several
times that day and I would find her following me at least as far as her leash
would let her go. Anyway, I took her home that day and she has been my Shadow
ever since. Shadow has major points in UKC conformation and 2 legs in UKC
towards her CD and has her BH, CGC, CD in AKC and her TDI titles. It's neat
to have a dog that thinks you are the moon.
I feel that way about her too...I hope to learn a lot from the rest of you.
Dee
I guess since everyone is introducing themselves, I should too. My husband
and I have 5 GSD's (Bless, Apollo, Jack, Pepper, and Blue). Three of which
are used for SAR. We both agree there is nothing like a GSD! Hello to
all!
Hi Bronwyn,
Welcome to the list. We are new here too, and have 3 German Shepherds.
(Amy, Riggs, and Solomon). A whole slew of other animals too :O) but since
this is a GSD list I will just stick to those.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi & welcome,
Sincerely,

Hi everyone
I joined the list a couple of weeks ago, and there really haven't
been that many messages at all. I got the first one yesterday. Are
there many people on this list?
Anyway, my name is Bronwyn and I have a 5 month old German Sheperd
called Gina ... actually, she's not 100% GS ... she has 15% Malamut
Wolf in her, but for all intensive purposes she's a German Sheperd.
These last 3 months that I have had her (I only got her at 9 weeks)
have been quite an experience, her being my first big dog and all.
There's always something on the go, something to explore, and
something new to show me ... like an old rotten piece of wood, or
anything else that smells really good to her (which usually does the
opposite for my olfactory senses). She has quite a big, secure
garden to run around in all day so I don't worry about leaving her
when I go to work.
Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself.

Shepherds are interested in everything and always want to check it out, you
might say they are really nosey. They vary in personality and even in body,
right down to the toes.
Even though I live on 40 wooded acres I still have to watch the one I have now
like a hawk because with there terrific nose they always smell something they
want to check out and they are not afraid to do it. The one I have now is
named Shadow, he is 21 months old now, he will scare the heck out of strangers
but after that it is play time, he would never bite. A German Shepherds job
was to take care of sheep so without sheep he will take care of you. They
will bond to the person in a family that treats them the best, they can be
smarter then a lot of people :-)))

Hi
My name is Helen and i have 2 german shephards; Schultz, male @ 7 years
and Lucy, female @ 5 years. Lucy just scares people with her look
however she loves people and won't hurt a soul. Schultz is extremely
protective now that he's older. If he is lose in the back yard don't
walk up on him as he will nip you in the butt or hand. If he's on a
lease, he's fine (he thinks he's going to the vet). If he's in the house
and you get in or if your in and he comes in, he's fine. To avoid any
problems, I put him down in my sewing room when people come to the
house, or both go behind the fence or up in their runs.I really needed a
guard dog here because of living in the country with 8 acres of property
therefore I can't fault my dog, he wasn't trained that way, it's he
nature to be protective.
A thought may be to take Mikah to obedience training. Those classes are
wonderful for you and the dog.
I don't have children, however; I would teach my children not to go near
or talk to strangers, and the same goes for my dog. They should be
taught to know the difference.
I hope the above has helped somewhat. good luck and let me know.

Hello,
I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Jennifer and i am a mom of four
kids and two german shepards.
Our puppies are, Mikah (f), she's going to be a year on Sept. 29th and
then there's Jake, he's 6 months. They have become a huge part of our
family and are loved very much.
We have a problem with Mikah though, she doesn't like anybody but us! As
long as we are with her around other people, she's ok, but if she get loose
she chases people and really scares them, i keep her on a run or in the
house all the time, but there are times when the kids leave the door open
and she gets out. We live next to vetrans retirement home and they have
called the police several times to complain. She has never bitten anyone,
but the police said if they get one more complant, they will take her

couldn't live without Mikah and she could not live without us. Please
help.
