Hi,
I'm pretty small potatoes compared to most of the rest of you--my husband
and I have just 2 horses! He rides an Arab mare, and I have a Peruvian
Paso gelding. Both of our horses are 17 yrs old, and ridden primarily on
trails, altho I have also taken dressage lessons on my PP, and will be
starting up with lessons again this January. I got interested in gaited
horses when I developed back problems--I had been riding the Arab mare. My
husband got tired of seeing her in the 'back yard' just eating her head
off, so he started riding her. Well, as it turns out, he and she do better
together than she and I did, so...after 20+ yrs of marriage, we finally
have an interest in common! Then I met my first Peruvian Paso at a show in
Oklahoma City, and fell in love. We moved back to CA, and six mos later, I
bought my PP. He is the prefect horse, as far as I am concerned--he even
has a smooth trot--and very smart, great temperment, handsome--but at 15
HH, I wish he were just a little shorter. So, I am beginning my search for
a shorter gaited horse who will eventually take over Encantador's
responsibilites--so he can just loaf and eat and be a god. I have ridden
a few Icelandics, but they haven't had the kind of emotional response that
I have grown to love from our two--so, on with the search. I'm very
interested in Tenn Walking Ponies, but haven't been able to find out much,
and no breeders in Northern CA that I can find. I live
north of Sacramento, in the foothills of the Sierras, on 5 acres right next
to a state recreation area with lots of lovely trails. We have a
collegiate daughter (with a lovely natural seat, and no desire to ride!), 4
cats, 3 dogs, and some goldfish--and I'm retired. Which means that I spend
most of my time dealing with feeding or cleaning up the result of having
fed all of the above!
Hopefully I'll get to meet some more 'gaited people' here--there don't seem
to be many in my area.

Hey, My name is Jan Brown I live in Vance Alabama, USA. We are in the
western part of the state between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. I own two
truly gaited horses and one that is supposed to be but he's trotty. The
two truly gaited are a mother and daughter I bought sight unseen off the
internet as they were on the way to a kill sell. They were both near
death when delivered. The mare, Whiskey, was shell shocked, it took 3 to
4 months just to let us touch her. Baby is still wild and untouched at 1
year old. Both are reg. Racking and Baby is also 1/2 TWH and does the
running walk naturally, I've never seen her trot. I had never ridden a
gaited horse but after Whiskey I'll never own anything else. Her rack is
faster than a canter and her canter is smooth as silk. She will not trot
under saddle but does it in the field. Due to her abuse and neglect she
is not a loving horse but she would rack her self to death if I asked
her to. She has SOOO much courage and willingness. I believe I could
point her at a tree and she would try to go up it if I asked. I only
pleasure trail ride and a gaited horse is THE way to go. The other
"gaited" horse we have belongs to my husband. Max is a TWH draft horse
cross. He stands 16.2 and is a big puppy. I 've gotten him to gait only
on 3 occasions. He's very trotty under saddle. He was used to haul
timber in a logging operation before we bought him. Whiskey is 13, Baby
is 1 and Max is 8. All horses are flat shod.

I was wondering, how are Icelandics gaited? Also, what are Kentucky
Gaiteds like? Is that what you call them? (I've never heard of them
before) I had no idea there were so MANY types of gaited horses!
As an introduction of myself, I am female, nearly 21, :), and I own a coal
black Paso Fino mare named Morning. She's got really nice conformation,
and although I haven't ridden her yet, her gaits are obviously reeeeelly
smooth. I can't wait! She has a 7 month old baby by her side, that I am
presently weaning. The baby will probably end up a rich dark chestnut, and
like her mama, not a speck of white on her. Her name is Glory, and she's
actually half Paso Fino and half Missouri Foxtrotter. I haven't figured
out which she's gaited like yet. :)

Hi Elizabeth: Did you have trotting horses before? How do you like the
smooth gait?
My sister really enjoys those hunter/jumpers and just doesn't understand why
I like gaited horses!

Hey! I come from the MO "hills" but now live in the "flatlands" of MO - 26
miles north of Springfield. I was born and raised around Birch Tree (Eminence
area). MFT have been a part of my life - all my life. My great uncle Tom
raised them when I was a kid, and though my mom was always deathly afraid I
would get hurt, I would sneak around with him! LOL! Rumor has it that some
of the wild horses on the Current River at Eminence are from his stock...it
used to be all open range back then.
We raise MFT too. You can see mine at

Hi Annette: We corresponded about a year and a half ago. I have a copy of
your video tape with the Rocky Mtn and Kentucky Mtn horses.
I don't show, so I wasn't at the All-Breed Gaited show. Judy Roberts from
Chandler was going to try to make it, but maybe she didn't. She has 7
Icelandics with 2 fillies for sale. There is another lady in Eloy who has
about 9 Icelandics.
I live in Chino Valley which is near Prescott. I am not a professional
trainer, but do show people how to work with their horses on the ground. If
they're interested in that, I would be more than glad to help.
Very glad to hear about your book and will be interested in getting a copy.

Judy, nice to see another gaited enthusiast in Arizona. Were you at the All
Breed Gaited Horse Show in Phoenix last weekend? Our group was there and had
a ball! I don't remember seeing any Icelandics, although I was pretty busy
talking to people about my own fairly rare horses. I didn't realize anyone
had that many Icelandics in Arizona. The largest group here seems to be the
heavy shod Walking Horse group, at least that was the largest group at the
show, although we had a strong turnout of 13 Mountain Horses out of the
approximately 80 in the state.
Where do you live? If you prefer to email me privately, feel free at
gerhardt@.... The reason I ask is that you apparently do training,
and I am always interested in finding good trainers for the many people with
Mountain Horses that need trainers. The group is expanding rapidly, so more
trainers will be needed, and since I am an attorney, I am not able to
accomodate all the people that want young horses trained.

Hi,
My name is Annette L. Gerhardt. I live in the Southeast corner of Arizona. I
am a Mountain Saddle Horse breeder. I have three stallions and three brood
mares, with assorted young stock. Today there are 12 horses on the place,
and I own another that is out on free lease with a friend for riding, my
senior stallion, as he is a peach of a riding horse.
I have just finished writing a book for the owners Gaited horses, with
emphasis on Mountain Saddle Horses and Gaited Morgans, for which nothing has
yet been written, on history, tacking, training and riding. I am in need of
good photos of horses in gait, particularly of gaited Morgans. Anyone
sending me a photo that is used in the book will receive credit in the book
of the name of the horse and the owner's name, and an autographed copy of
the book when it is published, which I hope to have accomplished before the
middle of 1999. Photos should be sent with the name of the horse and owner's
name and address to

Hi;
My name is Kathleen and I live in Central Oregon. I have two gaited horses, a
two yr old Foxtrotter filly that is not under saddle yet. This spring I will
start to ride her, and a Spanish Mustang who is single footed. He is a
Buckskin gelding 6yrs old and smooth as glass. I also have a 17yr old Appy
mare. All three horses are ranch horses as I work cows for all my neighbors,
but mostly we just trail ride. I live in the middle of the Ochoco National
Forest and am very lucky to have hundreds of miles of trails and two
wilderness areas out any of my gates.
You can see my herd at http://hometown.aol.com/bartgila/extreme/INDEX.htm
Hope everone gets to ride today. Have fun

Hi Sigrid:
I haven't heard of anyone from MN yet. My boss at work is from Minneapolis.
He worked for the University there. I'll ask him if he's heard of anyone
around MN with Icies, but he's not a horse person so he'll probably not know
anyone.
Anyway, glad to meet you, you'll enjoy this list!!

There aren't too many MFT down your way, are there? It's just a matter of
time! :) I work for the Federal Prison System - we have an institution down
your way. Maybe we know someone in common.
Hi Cody Puzzle:
Yes, I think I know who you are. You're on the foxtrotter list serve and I
really value all your input there!
I'm Debbie in Morgantown, West Virginia. You should recognize me from some
of the posts I've made there. And I love your stallions too!!!
DB
So, Debbie, where are you located? We have a baby paint - and we will keep
him a stud til we know what he can do. If he doesn't throw the gait (though
he should with his parents!) he'll make a great trail gelding anyway...we know
he's got the gait for that for sure.
We're not a big operation, but love the horses--and I have a hard time parting
with them. We raise what we sell, so I know them from birth. The MFT seems
to have personality to spare - and love people and attention. Besides being a
great trail horse (and show, if that's your cup of tea), they become family
really quick. When we sell one, I always make it clear that I have
"visitation rights!"
Hi Rita:
OOooooh yes, I've visited your web pages and just love that stallion of
yours!! Sun's White Cloud certainly has the color and that's what alot of
people want these days. Although I do have that junior stallion of color,
if he doesn't throw the natural gait and disposition that is so typical of
the Missouri Fox Trotter, I don't plan on keeping him as a stallion, I'll
just use him for trail riding. On my web pages, I have the Fox Trotter web
ring and the SSH web ring, and I always search for other sites that contain
information about the fox trotter. I think that's how I found your site.
I'll add it as a link on my links page. I've made friends with Sherry
Hartley in Senath MO, she has a half brother to my guy, (Frontier Scout) and
his first crop of foals is on the ground. I just hope my fellow throws
foals like his. It's good to hear from you, I'm making soooo many new
friends thru the internet -- isn't it wonderful? And I'm still learning all
about this wonderful breed. Like this list said in my first email of
information, we'll argue over which is the best breed. I figure you and I
will agree on one thing!! and that's that our foxtrotters are the BEST!! At
least I think so.
Have a wonderful weekend -- I'll look forward to hearing from you again and
also from all the other people out there with gaited horses, and especially
making new horse friends.

Well, I finally figured out how to post to this new list and I think it'll be a
great addition to the list serves I'm already on.
My name is Debbie and I live in Morgantown, WV (hi there in Ohio) on a small
farm where I breed and raise the Missouri Fox Trotter and Spotted Saddle Horses.
There aren't many of this wonderful breed in my area but the demand for them is
very high. Thus, I now have a coming 2-year old, sorrel and white double
registered stallion that will be standing next spring to 3/4 mares. I also have
an 18 year old FT mare that I've had for 15 of those years that will die here, a
four year old palomino gelding that I use for my saddle horse (for search and
rescue too) that has the best head on his shoulders that I've seen in a long
time, and a 2-year black filly that will someday be a brood mare to see if I can
get a black and white cross from my stallion.
I've been around horses all my life, my parents say I was almost born on one. I
train all my foals from day one and have sold 6 beautiful horses out of my old
mare. You see, my little business is run on a small scale.
I do mostly pleasure trail riding, but I'm a member of the Three Rivers Area
Search & Rescue team (mounted member)and I'm on the Board of Directors. We've
had 3 successful searches this past summer in West Virginia and Pennsylvania so
I'm very proud of our participation in this organization.
I'm also President of our local riding club, the Bunner Ridge Riding Club, 60
members stong and we have one large trail ride in June of every year. Anyone is
welcome to attend these rides, if you're close just drop me an email and I'll
give you directions and info.
Well for this first post, I'd better quit being so long-winded. I look forward
to hearing from everyone and meeting new horse people.
Deb in WV
Hi you folks have come up with a good idea here, I think there is a lot
of information we with the preference to the gaited equine can share
with each other.
As a form of introduction, My name is Beverly, I live in Ohio. I have 42
paso Fino and 13 "other breeds" living on my farm. I raise Paso Fino
horses to support my farm, do riding lessons and run a 501(c)3
Non-Profit horse rescue that covers the state of Ohio. (Link is always
at the bottom of my emails in my signature file).
I stand 4 stallions with two Jr. stallions scheduled to start next year
and one old fart ready to retire as soon as he can't settle any more
mares, which I expect to be any day. We generally have 11 to 17 babies a
year. I have been into Paso Fino for 13 years, came from a background of
Racking Horses, TW Horses and some of the "trotting breeds".
I have a website up, although I have been too busy to get it very far
along.
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/3667/index.html for the farm.
The name of my farm is Fairwind Farms. I train most of my own horses
here on the farm, we had one we took to the Paso Fino Nationals and came
home with a champion in the A/O Pleasure 3YR Old Schooling Colts. I
haven't had much time to spend on the show circuit lately. :)
I OF COURSE think Paso Fino are Gods gifts to the horse world! I have
also trained Missouri Fox Trotters, TW, Racking Horses and various other
single footing grade horses for people.
I also do web pages, had no choice but to learn!
I look forward to hearing from others on this list!
Sincerely,
--
