I don't have the answers to your questions; but I do know that our 23 mos old male is still a puppy at heart!  He doesn't even lift his leg yet!  But at the same time he is a big boy when he has desires for his future mate of 5 mos.  He reminds me of our kids when they were 13 years old-one minute they wanted to be treated like an adult and the next they want to be kids.

If an adolescent is the youngest member of a pack, can it take him
longer than usual to grow up? Our one year old is a big boy now, but

Hi Tana, I can's stress this enough...CONSISTANC Y is the most
important thing you can do for your pup. My sister trains seeing eye
dogs and PAL dogs and she has given me some really good tips over the
years. She takes all her ques from wolf behavior...and these have
ALL worked for us.

First...your dog will NEVER come to you consistantly if you ever get
angry and yell "get over here"...would YOU go to someone screaming at
you?...what we did with our two GS's was to get a long (15ft) horse
line (like they train horses with...they are light weight cotton
leads) and when we were out with Zovy and Zepplin in the yard...one
of us would have one on the line. I would say..."Zovy come...and of
course she would ignore me in the beginning. I would keep
saying..."Zovy COME" in a gentle voice while "reeling" her to me with
the line..When she finally was in front of me I would shower her with
praise and "good girls" (no treats)..just verbal praise and love.
She understood "coming to her" will get me praise and pets...

We started when they were 10 weeks, everytime we were out side and
finally the line was no longer needed. To this day 7 years
later...neither of those dogs has EVER refused to COME when we
call...now all we need do is say COME and they are right there...even
when there is a deer or bunny that would be much more fun to chase...

Another thing we did was to train them to go potty on command. We
had to think of one word that we would never use in the house...

EXIT is the word we use...We started when they would pee or poop on
their paper in the house. When we took the paper out to the place
where we wanted them to go when they were bigger...we would take them
as well and put the paper down and say "EXIT" and point their noses
at it. When they were finally big enough to go outside to do their
business...and did finally pee or poop...(yes we had to wait around)
we would say EXIT at the moment they were doing whichever, then loads
of praise and "good dogs". I never had to wait while they decided
to "go"...I let them out and say EXIT and they go right out and do
it. Now...we do accompany the going poop with a treat upon return.

We also have always had large kennels for them to have as THEIR
places...the kids were never allowed to go into the kennels and the
pups knew they could "get away" from people into their "dens" when
they needed. We've never had the doors on those kennels and to this
day they sleep in them every night. We got the large grey plastic
crates...but if you get the metal grid crates, cover them with a
blanket so they have darkness and quiet when they need it.

Oh and another thing to remember.... NEVER let YOUR head get below
your dogs head....this is very important in Wolf behavior. That
means no rolling on the floor with your puppy or dog. That's when
they take the upper and hand...and as a young dog that's not a good
thing...Always stay above your dogs head. Also...it's best not to
rough house with your dog in the first year to 18 months. Keep them
calm and only gentle play...remember you are patterning them for the
rest of their life in that first 2 years.

We had a "reunion" with our dogs siblings a year after we all got
them and ours sat and watched as the rest were berserk! We were so
glad our dogs were the one's sitting and mellow while the others were
just wild. Believe me...Zovy and Zepplin play...roughhouse with each
other and will run with us...but do not roughhouse with us...which is
when owners accidently get hurt.

So...consistancy is key...gentleness and firm commands with a tender
voice. LOVE and Praise when they are good. Turn your back and
ignore them when they are bad...make a statement that unacceptable
behavior will only get them ignored...and. ..as with kids...the most
horrible thing is withholding love...withholding affection is the
worse punishment.. .

hope some of this helps...we have the best two German Shepards in the
world...oh.. .and having two is a great idea...they are each others
best friends and companions and playmates. love and peace...lynnann

I found it best to take the pup out every two hours. It also helps to take
up all food and water after 7PM and make sure that the pup goes out before
you go to bed at night. I dont believe in paper training. I have two GS
dogs. Good luck with your training.

Hi,

We feed Diamond Brand Lamb and Rice Formula which is made is Missouri.  The lamb and rice formula has no fillers in it and in our opinion, is as good as Purina One and  Iams simply because it is a premium food with the AFCO Seal without the high price tag.  Since they don't do much advertising, they can keep their costs down.  You can do a search for their website called Diamond Dog Food.  Generally, a fifty pound bag of Lamb and Rice runs about $21.00 to $23.00.  Hope this helps some!

Hi,

Just a suggestion or two for you.  It really depends on the area that you are in and what the stud fees for untitled, unproven males are going for in your area.  Also, try to get an idea of what the other person plans to sell the puppies for.  Generally, a stud fee should be about the cost of what one of the puppies will be sold for.  For example, in our area, untitled, unproven males will get a stud fee of $300 to $400.00 as that is what most of the puppies will be sold for.  If you go North of us into the Chicago area, you can double that price.

Also, when you do decide to stud your dog out, make sure and have a contract specifying what you will require and what you will do if the breeding does not take place or if there is only one puppy born to the litter.  Will you offer a free second breeding the next time the female comes in heat?  If there is only one puppy will you offer a second breeding for 1/2 the original cost?  Also, where will the breeding take place?  Your kennel or theirs?  If you keep their female, there is the additional cost of keeping her to consider.  Never do it just on a handshake, spell it all out in a contract!!

Hope this helps you out some.

Best of luck!

I feed all my GSDs Exceed from Sam's club. It only comes in two flavors and it is for any age dog. Two of my dogs have skin allergies and this food has helped.  I have researched dog food labels and this is actually one of the best foods I have found. It has really good main ingredients and not all the fillers like corn, beet pulp, and pulverized peanut shells...It sounds as bad as it is for the dog...yuck. The first link below tells you what the stuff on the labels of dog foods mean and the others sell really great dog food. I am hoping to switch my dogs over to one of these brands soon because they are some of the best you can find. If you don't want to use these, go to dogpile.com and type in 'best dog foods' and it will give you lots of websites to look at.

We feed our dogs IAMs puppy food and then switch to
IAMs dog food at a year. It has the same ingredients
as Eukanuba but is slightly less expensive. Also,
SAMs wholesale carries IAMs. Hope this helps.

I have a 14 week pup (Suede) who has developed a swollen teat. She
exhibits no signs of distress when I touch the swollen area, but does
"worry" at it from time to time.

This is our first dog, so we have no expreience at all.

Any help or ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks.

I recently purchased a pup from harmony german shepherds, little boy
# 2 from the Heidi litter. We named him Cimba. We have only had
him since Jan 16th. He is housebroken already- we don't even need
to put him in a crate when we are away. He knows several commands
and he hasn't even been to obedience training yet. Lyle- this dog
melts my heart; is great with my 4 yr old son; and gets along
perfectly with my 4 yr old female german shepherd. Thank You So
Much for giving me such a great new family member. I will update
you with pictures as he grows.
Sincerely, Jeni

My name is Kelly and I purchased "Hanson" from Lyle and Kathy.
Hanson is now 9 1/2 months old. I STILL do not let Hanson alone for
a single minute. He is like having a 2 year child in the house
again. I do highly suggest new owners get a crate (we call it "his
room"). It only took a couple of days for him to quit whining. It
brought back a lot of memories of when my children were very young
and getting them to sleep through the night. (Consistency and lots
of patience.) After about 3 weeks, we took Hanson to a puppy
beginners class, (which I now call the choke and drag technique)and
have never been back. We only went to one class and I decided I would
train him myself. German Shepherds are VERY smart. It took me about
1 week of constant "good dog", treats and patience and he learned how
to come, sit, shake, and stay. And, no choke and drag!!!!! One
other suggestion is to have lots of toys around the house. Hanson
gets a new toy each week. When your pup tries to chew on something
he isn't suppose to (and he will), hand him one of his toys to chew
on. I do have to say, I had a harder time training my family to put
up things they didn't want chewed up. I love this site. I check it
everyday. I hope we Shepherd Lovers can stick together and share
ideas and suggestions.

Well, time to go for now. Enjoy your puppy, we sure do. He is
really spoiled and very very loved.

Hi Rachelle,

There are too many ideas to list here. But, I would recommend that
you start with some basic obedience training to start getting control
of your puppy so that hopefully you can nip this bad habit in the bud
now rather than facing possibly worse problems later on.

We recommend that people start obedience training at home early. Four
months old is not too early to start with some basics although your
puppy will learn faster after 6 months of age.

Until we record our own video tapes LOL... We think the Video
training tapes and CDs from www.leerburg.com are very good. There
are also a lot of informative articles on this subject there.

In particular, "Your Puppy 8 Weeks to 8 months"
http://www.leerburg.com/120.htm
and "Basic Dog Obedience" http://www.leerburg.com/302.htm
are tapes we recommend to folks who adopt our GSD puppies.

Hope that helps!

Hi-
I just joined the group, and am looking for a female pup in the greater
Washington, DC area.

We had several GSDs and raised a few litters about 20 years ago. We are
looking for a dog that can live with our family...three children at home,
ages 16-7 years, our 2 cats, aged mongrel (spayed Chow mix), and flock of
18 sheep on our farm in eastern West Virginia. I don't plan to show her,
but would like to learn more about using her to herd our flock. Mostly, I
want a family companion. I loved my Shepherds, and really miss them. Our
Chow mix, Gretchen, lost her friend, a 16 year old Lab mix, several years
ago, and I think she is lonely, too.

I am home on the farm all day, and would give a good home to a pup. I have
made a few inquires, but am amazed at the price that some people are asking
for a puppy. I can't afford to pay $900 and up! I have considered getting a
rescue dog, but she would have to be young and have the right temperment-
not very agressive, but not shy, either.

I'm hoping that someone on the list might be able to point us in the right
direction in finding a new member of our family, and/or offer advice.

Thanks!

Martha McGrath
