Description

We created this group in the hopes of collecting as much information as possible on horses suspected of carrying or known to be afflicted with Hereditary Equine Regional Dermal Asthenia, also known as HERDA. All information is being collected based on the good faith reliance that the information obtained in the studies done by UC Davis, Mississippi State University, and Cornell University is correct.
There are many horse owners and breeders that may be affected by this hereditary defect being present in their herds due to the fact that a study involving Mississippi State University and Cornell has shown that 95% of all HERDA cases trace back to the great Foundation sire, Poco Bueno. The study has also shown that 5% of HERDA cases trace back to Poco Bueno's full brother Old Grand Dad, and to their sire King and possibly even further. This is scientific fact that has been reported by the Universities involved in this study. I am NOT an expert on this subject, nor am I a veterinarian or researcher. I don't know nearly as much about this subject as I'd like to, and none of our members do either, which is why we created this group. I personally own several horses that are on the suspect list, and we are all still learning and trying to glean all the information we can on this genetic defect by speaking personally with the researchers that headed up the studies, as well as speaking to people that actually own, have contact with, or have seen these afflicted horses. We are not trying to spread any falsehoods or lies about this genetic defect that maims and kills our horses, but rather the opposite.
The posted pic is a horse from the MSU herd, homozygous (afflicted) for HERDA.
**Disclaimer** The contents of this site are not controlled by me, therefore I am not responsible for the contents of this site. Information obtained is based on the good faith assumption that the University studies are correct.
