47 dead horses may have starved in Nevada BLM-tribal dispute

By SCOTT SONNER
ASSOCIATED PRESS

RENO, Nev. (AP) -
Federal agents and sheriff's deputies are investigating the deaths of 47 horses in northeast Nevada that may have starved and been dumped on federal land after they were rounded up in a dispute with two American Indian sisters.

An autopsy is planned to determine the exact cause of the deaths of the horses - mostly foals - found at two sites on Bureau of Land Management land in the Little Smokey Valley about 18 miles south of Eureka, BLM spokesman Mike Brown said Tuesday.

Most of them "appear to have died from malnutrition or trampling," Brown told The Associated Press from Elko.

As many as 10 were adults and the rest young offspring, some newborns. Death by trampling in a corral "is what would happen to foals that are too weak and they just don't get up after they are born," Brown said.

There's no indication any of the horses were shot or otherwise physically harmed, he said.

"The BLM is concerned about the dumping on public land," he said. "We're working with the Eureka County sheriff's office.

"There were reports in May that some of the animals being held at a temporary location (after the roundups) were in poor condition," Brown said.

Sheriff's deputies discovered the dead horses over the weekend.

A veterinarian estimated some had been dead for two to three weeks, but some may have been dead for as long as two to three months, Brown said.

He said the horses do not appear to be federally protected wild horses and most likely once belonged to the Shoshone sisters Mary and Carrie Dann, who've been at odds with the BLM for years over horses they grazed on land they claim belongs to the Western Shoshones.

An official for an animal rescue group that found homes for some of the horses the BLM rounded up suspects the horses already were in bad shape and became malnourished after a California rancher failed to make good on his agreement to transfer them from a holding corral at Fish Creek Ranch near Eureka to his own ranch in Buellton, Calif.

"It's very tragic," said Jill Starr of Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescuers in Lancaster, Calif.

"When horses are rounded up by helicopters it stresses out the mares so they often abort, have still births or give birth to weak foals. Some of them were just too far gone to make it," she said.

A lawyer for the Danns blamed the BLM Tuesday for rounding up the horses in the first place.

"Those horses were fine out on the range where they were. This is the result of misguided federal policy - your taxpayer dollars at work," said Julie Fishel of the Western Shoshone Defense Project in Crescent Valley.

The BLM rounded up more than 500 horses belonging to the Danns in February. Last fall, the agency seized and sold 227 cattle belonging to the elderly grandmothers.

The BLM maintained the Danns had been grazing hundreds of cattle and horses illegally for decades, to the detriment of the range and other ranchers who have permits to graze livestock in the region.

The Danns contend the land still belongs to the Shoshone tribe under the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley and that the BLM has no authority to regulate their grazing practices.

Starr said her rescue group ended up taking about 150 of the 500 horses.

Fishel said the California rancher, Slick Gardner, had agreed to take the rest and had arranged to keep them temporarily at the Fish Creek Ranch near Eureka, not far from where the dead horses were found.

Gardner already is under investigation in California for his handling of 250 horses he did transfer to his ranch about 100 miles north of Los Angeles. He did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment on Tuesday.

Animal welfare investigators in Santa Barbara County said last month some of the mustangs on Gardner's ranch remain so weak and malnourished their ribs are visible.

Gardner "bounced a check to us for inspection and veterinarian fees," Fishel said.

"The next thing we heard was the horses were starving to death at Fish Creek. That was a couple of months ago and then the Lifesavers stepped in."

Gardner, who grew up on the ranch, told AP in June that the 246 horses he transferred there in February are fattening up and criticized others for "sensationalizing" the extent of their continued health problems.

Starr said she hasn't had time to worry about who to blame for the latest deaths.

"There are so many characters involved it's hard to trace. You can start with asking why BLM rounded them up when they were so (pregnant) and knew that was going to be hard on them," Starr said.

"And then you can ask why didn't Slick Gardner finish what he started? My concern has been to get the horses out of there and get them some help."

--

and the really sad thing in all of this is they all had good homes to go to they were all placed the rescues involved in the original project well we wanted to protect them not see them come to harm . I know that there are many views on this and I did not post this open an age old debate just to pass on the info . This saddens me that all sides could not find a way to help the horses .

We know that once horse slaughter no longer happens there WILL be a
glut of horses on the market and the prices of these WILL plummet
through the floor.

I dont this is true. The number of horses that go to slaughter each
year is too small to have that much of an effect on the price of
horses. The horses that go to slaughter are either young and
unhandled, unsound, old or rank. To say that having these horses on
the market is going to effect the middle level of horse buyers is
like saying that having more ppl breeding mid level horses is going
to effect the price of $10k cutting horses. Well bred, well trained
horses will always sell for decent prices, regardless of what the
rest of the market does.

>1) Ok here is a senerio we KNOW that at some auctions that there
>can be 200 horses and 80% WILL be brought by Kill buyers. OK, now
>slaughter has stopped there is now NO kill buyers....WHO is buying
>all thoses horses now? sure SOME will be purchased by "family" homes
>etc and some by "horse traders" (but this WILL slow down as horse
>trading will become unprofitable) ..but NOT all..what happens to
>THEM?

My honest opinion is that NO ONE will buy them. I go to slaughter
auctions at least once a month, and often twice. There are rescues
there bidding, and families there bidding and if they want to outbid
the meat buy they pay $210 for the horse...over that they are bidding
against each other not the kill guys. The price of these bottom level
horses will fall drastically without the kill guys there and I
suspect that means many of these horse wont sell at ALL. And owners
will have to face a decision. Pay to put Old Jake down or throw him
out in the field and hope he dies of natural causes. THIS scenario is
what scares me about the end of horse slaughter. I suspect there will
be a LOT more neglect problems if horse slaughter is sucessfully
ended.

>2) The prices of horses WILL drop due to the glut that WIL happen,
>what worries me is this will make horses MORE acessible to
>people..sounds good?

I believe this will only affect the price of grade horses with little
training. Those that are just one level up from the majority of horse
that go to slaughter. Ppl who buy a horse of this quality and get
hooked on horses often want to *trade up* within a year. They're
going to be looking for a well trained and probably registered horse.
The horses one level up from slaughter market now are the horses that
are going to be in danger and its going to be bad for a couple of
years. Then the optimist in me likes to believe that the backyard
breeders are going to decide that its not worth breeding old bessie
to sell the foal for $25.

>will NOT, therefore we WILL see and increse of horse neglect and
>abuse. Not nessiarly though cruel people, just people who saw
>a "cheap" pony and didnt realise how to care for the animal OR the
>level of cost assocated.

I agree. This is a problem already..and i think your right that its
going to get worse.

>a "good" "young" "sound" "well trained" horses people will
>adopt "rescues" for not only cheaper price but also as that is in
>their price range "lower" their expecations of what they can get for
their dollar.

I dont know about this. Although some who adopt horses do so because
they're looking for a cheap horse... the majority are doing so with
the hopes of saving a horse..and that wont change. If ppl want a
young sound horse cheap all they have to do is go to their local
auction house..there are hundreds there.

>from the "advrage" person point of view..WHY would they pay say $400
>for a OLD slightly unsound "rescue" when they can go to an auction
>or pick up the classifieds and buy a YOUNG, TRAINED perfectly sound
>horse for the SAME price? This is a "problem" I think we need to
>start thinking about.

Because they wont find a young, TRAINED, perfectly sound horse for
the same price. Supply and demand says that there are only so many
trainers, traders, individuals training horses .. there is a glut of
young sound horses that go to slaughter every year because ppl are
breeding for spots and get solids, or breeding old bess and mr jake
just because they can.. but there is NOT a glut of well trained
horses out there..never have been and i cant seeing it ever happening.

>the bodys, (my guess would be massive burn offs) REMEMBER some citys
SHOOT dogs to cut costs..I bet this will happen to horses to and an
unskilled shooter WILL make a horse suffer a horrible death....not
>delibertly but it WILL happen.

EVERY horse that goes to slaughter dies a horrible death.. so the
logic that if slaughter is banned SOME of them will die a horrible
death doesnt make sense.

>These are things that we NEED to plan for.. this problem I feel will
>last at LEAST 5 years this is assuming that BREEDERS start to slow
>down "production"

This is where the real problem lies.

PASSING THIS ALONG: PLEASE CONTACT GAIL: GRellox@...

Hi everybody,
I was an active participant of this group a long time ago, don't
know if any of you still remember me, I had to drop out because of
work.
I now have a problem I'm hoping might be answered by someone in the
group or someone's friend.  I have to sell my rescued TB, he is 9 or
10 now, from the Secretariat/Treasury line.  16'2 hands, blood bay
with 2 white back feet, absolutely sound and very beautiful.  I have
been training him in dressage, he never bucks or rears, if scared he
will tend to bolt.  He he as sweet and loving as can be about
grooming and handling on the ground.  I think he would be a good
jumper, goes over cavelletti poles like nothing.  The bad news is he
is a nervous trail horse.  I am going to retire and live up north in
the summer and I want a horse I can trailer up and go trail riding
by myself, he is really not the horse for that.  I love him to death
and this has been a very painful decision, I am not asking a lot of
money for him I really want a very loving home because he is a very
loving horse.  I can email pictures if anyone is interested.  You
can email me directly or call me at home in the evening at 734-464-
8328.
Thank you for your time in reading this and possibly passing it on.

Ladies bathing suit
When I was a child in the 1950s the bathing suit for the mature figure was
boned, trussed and reinforced, not so much sewn as engineered.  They were
built to hold back and uplift, and they did a good job.

Today's stretch fabrics are designed for the prepubescent girl with a figure
carved from a potato
chip.

The mature woman has a choice-she can either go up front to the maternity
department and try on a
floral suit with a skirt, coming away looking like a hippopotamus who
escaped from Disney's Fantasia or she can wander around every run of the
mill department store trying to make a sensible choice from what amounts to
a designer range of florescent rubber bands.

What choice did I have?  I wandered around, made my sensible choice and
entered the chamber of horrors known as the fitting room.

The first thing I noticed was the extraordinary tensile strength of the
stretch material.  The Lycra used in bathing costumes was developed, I
believe, by NASA to launch small rockets from a slingshot, which give the
added bonus that if you manage to actually lever yourself into one, you are
protected from shark attacks as any shark taking a swipe at your passing
midriff would immediately suffer whiplash.

I fought my way into the bathing suit, but as I twanged the shoulder strap
in place, I gasped in
horror - my bosom had disappeared! Eventually, I found one bosom cowering
under my left armpit.  It took a while to find the other.  At last I located
it flattened beside my seventh rib.

The problem is that modern bathing suits have no bra cups.  The mature woman
is meant to wear her bosom spread across her chest like a speed bump.  I
realigned my speed bump and lurched toward the mirror to take a full view
assessment.  The bathing suit fit all right, but unfortunately it only fit
those bits of me willing to stay inside it.  The rest of me oozed out
rebelliously from top, bottom, and sides.

I looked like a lump of play dough wearing undersized cling wrap.  As I
tried to work out where
all those extra bits had come from, the prepubescent sales girl popped her
head through the curtain, "Oh, there you are!", she said, admiring the
bathing suit.  I replied that I wasn't so sure about this one and asked what
else she had to show me.

I tried on a cream crinkled one that made me look like a lump of masking
tape, and a floral two piece which gave the appearance of an oversized
napkin in a serving ring.  I struggled into a pair of leopard skin bathers
with ragged frills and came out looking like Tarzan's Jane, pregnant with
triplets and having a rough day.  I tried on a black number with a midriff
and looked like a jellyfish in mourning. I tried on a bright pink pair with
such a high cut leg I thought I would have to wax my eyebrows to wear them.

Finally, I found a suit that fit..............a two-piece affair with a
shorts style bottom and a
loose blouse-type top.  It was cheap, comfortable, and bulge-friendly, so I
bought it.

My ridiculous search had a successful outcome, I figured.  When I got home,
I found a label which
read -- "Material might become transparent in water."

Lynn, I think it is called BL Solution and contains devils claw and
yucca. It comes in a paste and a liquid. PetSmart stores that carry
State Line Tack items also carry this item. The PetSmart near me in
Plano (Parker and I-75) carries it. I use it instead of bute. It
used to be called "Buteless". Great stuff for pain relief without
the potential stomach problems of bute.

Sarah, I think I tried that.....does it 'say' that they will do that, when one orders? Cuz I didn't get anything that said $$ would be donated.  Or is it just thru the link, and they know?

I sure hope so, cuz I ordered 70+ bucks worth of stuff....and also got a 'free' gift...mane comb, but what the heck, one really can never have enough of them!

Where's he at? I'm ready to PAY someone to catch a couple of these horses! LOL

I have a pony I bought for my daughter 4 years ago that I discovered had been SEVERELY abused...no physical scars, but definitely mental ones! He trusts NO ONE! I can only catch him if I can get him in a pen & corner him. Then he is so scared, he'll sit on his haunches almost....NEVER has offered to kick or bite. I had him in a pen back in the spring, but it got muddy from the rain and he was SOOO miserable & lost weight, that I had to turn him loose! If he is never more than a pasture ornament, and my horse's best buddy, then he'll serve his purpose. People have told me to get rid of him...for what? to what? He'd wind up in another abusive situation with people forcing him to do his will. So here he'll stay! Plus, he is Cori's first pony, whether she can ride him or not! Guess Gypsy was a good name for him!

I also have a friend's horse that she bought for $200 from an abusive home. Sweetest little gelding you ever saw, but, again, does NOT want to be caught! Now he's fine once he's caught, just avoids it if possible. Another pasture ornament & horse buddy! He and Brian's qrtr horse filly are beautiful together and VERY happy!

They're both the same size. He's a grulla and she's a red dun...same size (but she's quickly outgrowing him). They ROLL together in the pasture, run together, and you can often see them walking in synchronization! It's so funny!

OH....as for Alabama, I sometimes do think we're a separate country...the last to know...usually the last in everything! It's really a beautiful state, and I can't imagine living anywhere else...it is home! Of course, if my husband has his way, we'll eventually migrate to Michigan! I HATE cold weather! (course 125 heat index ain't fun either!) I've told Brian he'll have to build me an underground tunnel from the house to the barn for the cold winters! LOL

And as for Texas, it COULD be its own country! I love it, and wish I'd grown up there w/all the REAL cowboys! No offense to anyone else, but there are a LOT of wannabes around here, if you know what I mean!

I must say that I'm often amazed at the horses you guys rescue. Just don't see too much of that around here, and we have few, if any, killer buyers in the area. Just not a market here, but I know if you go north near the borders of Mississippi & Tennessee, there's a lot of neglect & abuse.

I can't do too much from here, but I'm always keeping my eyes open for anyone needing help close enough to me!

Amanda, I know when we lived in the CA desert we were told nothing will get rid of scorpions.  Of course this was after we had the guy out to spray for them.  That was over 25 years ago tho, so I would call the exterminators and see what they say.  I am with you,  I had them all over our house and a baby crawling on the floor.  They absolutely give me the creeps.  Good luck with getting rid of them.

Lynn,

I just ordered a bunch of stuff from there, last Thurs, and it was here yesterday (Monday)....excellent service.  Over 60 bucks and shipping is free (except for FOB stuff---gallons, and over sized).

They have CoFlex bandaging wrap (like vetwrap but better in my opinion, as you cannot apply it too tight, and it breathes).  for 1.20 IF you order 12 in the same color, otherwise it's 1.29.

My young gelding came up lame last week, and I've been soaking his foot, can't find abscess hole, no fever, no bruising, no pressure points (farrier used his pressure tester-thingie)....etc...So I've been packing it w/a poultice solution, and using old rags, then wrapping it w/duct tape.  This weekend I put him back out, and at the end of the day, after stamping flies all day, he is a little gimpy on it, but I soak it again in hot water and Epsom salts, and he feels better.  Vet and farrier agree, thinking that he probably had a scrape, and with the new turnout area --a bad bug (germ) was in the boggy part and infected him.  I'll just keep doing the soaking till he quits limping, can't hurt...can only help.
~~~
Whew, sorry I went into a book, but just wanted to tell you what I've been up to, along w/all the running for the kids, farming, etc...we've got 6 acres of alfalfa and grass down, storm missed us last night, hit county to the east of us tho.  Hopefully today we'll get the hay up before it rains.
Take care all,
