HRN pellets/ hay store coming soon?  Also a HRN bunny hospital close to cape cod that's open late and on weekends would be fantastic.  How does one go about making pellets?

To everyone:
please do not represent yourself as coming from HRN. You are an
individual, expressing your individual opinion. HRN's primary purpose is
rabbit rescue and education. Of course, we discourage breeding -- as
does HRS, but we cannot be responsible for whatever actions you, as an
individual, decide to take.

thank you,

Big surprise. Until people stop looking at other animals as a commodity and see them as the sentient beings that they are, this will always continue.
How about them Pats! Smart play at the end of that game.

Bonnie & everyone else.

I wasn't the person actively involved, but a year or two ago Sweet
Meadow did some breeding. Several groups actively boycotted them
but several HRN members engaged them in conversation. It took
a few weeks of negotiations but eventually they decided to
stop breeding. We have already gone down that route.

The fact that they are opening doing it now. (And I suspect but
can't prove they have been breeding discreetly before this) does
not make me personally want to engage them in conversation
again, When we were negotiating the first time, one of the
responses we got was that we need to understand that they
are a small business. (Um, no, it is a business's responsibility
to understand its customers) They clearly know our position.
They also know they have lost quite a bit of business because
of this. They are making it clear that they don't care.

None of this is (in the past or in the future) has been done officially
by HRN. We are a non profit focused on rabbit rescue and we make
it clear that we are against breeding. We may make statements that
we are disappointed about places that breed, but we really shouldn't
pick out a single organization.

On the other side, we are clearly a group of rabbit lovers and
what people on this list want to do on their they are welcome too,
and I hope they have some success.

I don't really have a right to say anything to this group-but perhaps there is a better way to convince the owners not to breed and sell rabbits by asking for a sit down/talk session? The owners are good people who would probably listen and agree with this group if the facts were presented in a kind, informative manner.
I strongly believe that the way this is done will make all the difference in the world. I've learned that diplomacy is the best way to handle any disagreements to do with intelligent people. These are good, intelligent people who perhaps don't understand the plight of the rabbits and what you all have to go through with hoarding, breeding and dumping.

Really-may I recommend that instead of online protests perhaps requesting a face to face meeting with some cool headed people presenting the case might be more effective?

Only a suggestion.. .

The closest place I knew of for hay bales when I was down there was a feed
store in Avon, though I can't find it listed now. I have no idea what they
sold for pellets. If you were driving out to Sherborn for hay, maybe using
the Waltham Agway for hay bales (also pellets, but I forget what they
carry) is as convenient a choice. I used to use them while working in
Watertown. I imagine there is hay to be had in various places between
Quincy and Sherborn.

The Pet Supplies Plus on Southern Artery (same lot as the Goodwill store)
may be able to order 50 lb bags of pellets for you if they do not have
them on the shelf. Way back when I had all those fosters, that is where I
would get my 50 lbs of Purina green bag. Hay came from the place in Avon.

VCA in Weymouth is on the Oxbow retain/vet List. Ordering bulk pellets
through a store or vet that already gets regular shipments will save you
some money, though will not be as economical as using the Sweet Meadow
warehouse. Fin Fur & Feather (Washington St) is also on that list, but
they sell all sorts of animals and have been known to advertise "Get your
Easter Pets here!" I have avoided them like the plague, haven't stepped
foot in it since I was a teenager. *gag* If you haven't been in there yet.
don't bother.

Here is the email I wrote to Al. People can feel free to copy/paste and send it along from their own addresses. I think that Al is responsible for whoever this other person breeding bunnies is. And even if the person breeding bunnies doesn't care about the social implications of rabbit overpopulation, they have to care about a large number of customers no longer buying their products from them. It would be prettty.. unwise... not to.

Dear Al,
I have been a loyal and enthusiastic Sweet Meadow customer and I would like to remain that way. I heard that baby bunnies are being bred on the farm again, and as a shelter/rescue worker, I cannot support such a business. Consider that tens of thousands of rabbits are killed at shelters every year; they are perfectly healthy, cute, sociable rabbits who there just aren't enough homes for. It depresses me to hear that Sweet Meadow is pumping more baby bunnies into the mix, which will directly and indirectly lead to more and more rabbit deaths every year.
I spend thousands of dollars of my own money and countless hours caring for and adopting out foster bunnies through various rescues and shelters. Please consider the greater social implications of breeding bunnies.
I want to try and help save Sweet Meadow and that is why I am suggesting you stop this. A large number of rabbit enthusiasts, including me, have heard about the bunny breeding and are looking for alternative sources for our hay and pellets. I want you to know how big the impact will be on your business if you continue breeding bunnies. I want you to vow to stop whoever is doing this, because I do love your products and I do want your farm to survive. And hundreds of other Massachusetts residents agree with me. This is important, especially during a time like this, for the survival of Sweet Meadow.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Mary Lempert

I just went to their website, and posted a polite email. I did say that they should agree to be a shelter (as soo many are too overwhelmed right now), instead of breeding bunnies that may never get adopted at all.

I hope the right person will read it before it is deleted, because I have a sense that the wrong one in this situation won't allow it if "they" are the first to read it.

I did the best I can, hopefully

I’m not suggesting we launch an all-out assault, but Sweet Meadow is not playing fair so perhaps we can circumvent (or at least complicate) their deletions by commenting on as many *positive* posts as possible. That way, they’ll have a harder time deleting our input without also impacting his supporters. I’m just sayin’ …

And I’m planning to identify myself as one of a group of rabbit enthusiasts, but I’m not using HRN’s name. Al will figure it out, but legally it should be okay, right?

Okay, I have decided to keep out of this, but will do so no longer. This has already happened once before (with SMF breeding) and an online protest was started. I was the "cooler head" in this before, speaking to both Al & Patty and telling them the rescue side of why this is bad, not to mention how it will affect their business. I can tell you right now, this is not Al's doing and if it were up to him, he would probably NOT breed. Actually HE is not the one breeding. I will also tell you that I "Thought" a resolution had been worked out. Apparently this is not the case. At this point, I feel any effort is NOT going to make a difference as there is only ONE person who needs to be convinced that this will hurt their business (well maybe 2 people). And that person does not care, one way or another.

Suzanne,

Thanks for filling me in. I will send an email to Sweet Meadows telling them I have just learned this and may stop doing business there because of it.  I will also disengage from any FB activity regarding Sweet Meadow Farm as well.

It's a shame-a loose-loose situation for them and for the rabbits.

I'm so disappointed in them!!! I THOUGHT they were cool beans-and now I've learned just the opposite. DAMN.

You may have friended "Sweet Meadow," which is on facebook as a "person"? Join

Did you join the group first? I'm not sure why it's not showing up. Maybe try
adding a "comment" to the post that I put on there on Wed... that worked for
Carole. The good thing about posting these here instead of creating our own
cause is that other Sweet Meadow customers will see about the bunnies; and the
Michaud's also won't be able to ignore the messages. I don't think they're
deleting any of the wall posts because they left mine up there; it seems more
like a technical error.

In the search box on FB put causes and hit search. Along the top are a few tabs. One of them says Find Causes. Move your mouse over this then a drop down box will appear. At the bottom of the drop down box says start a cause. Click that and proceed. You can even set it so if there are any donations, you can make the beneficiary HRN. If you have any trouble feel free to let me know. I'll have more time later to mess around with it.

Administrative power over the fan page can delete whatever they want. I highly suspect that if they are seeing these things in an effort to save their business they are deleting them. What we may want to consider instead is sTarting a "cause" against them. This way they can not delete anything and we're in charge of it.

Hi. I've posted on their wall 2x, and it never showed up! I don't know why it didn't, but I'll continue trying. What they are up to is unethical. Do you have an email address or phone # to call them? If so, I'll do whatever possible!!

Hi all,
As we learned earlier this week, Sweet Meadow Farm is breeding and selling baby bunnies again. I suggested earlier this week that we all join the Facebook group "Save Sweet Meadow" and write on their wall that we refuse to support them in any way until they stop. Carol and I are the only ones so far to do this... so our threat doesn't sound very.. threatening. If enough people write on their wall, the Michaud's might actually listen. They have a lot on the line and HRN's support is, I'm sure, important to them. Strength in numbers! Write on their wall, even if you just copy/paste what I wrote!

Done! Maybe if they hear enough flack from enough of us, they’ll wise up. Maybe not.

Yes, this is very disheartening. I just wrote a message on the "Save Sweet Meadow" page on Facebook. I suggest everyone join the group and write something similar on their wall so they can see the number of supporters they will be alienating. So disappointing!

Sweet Meadow Farm STILL Breeding and Selling Bunnies

The other day I was picking up some hay at Sweet Meadow Farm and they had a baby bunny outside for sale for $40.

I asked whose bunny it was and I was told it belonged to the owner, who likes to breed bunnies to show children-a "miracle of life" kind of story, except for that poor bunny who is likely to go to the first person with $40, not a screened adoptive home.

I know that Sweet Meadow has had difficulties lately, but I am angry because I thought they had agreed to stop breeding.

It seems they just don't get it.....

I noticed this last time I was there (maybe a month ago?) and was a bit
confused because I had thought they were supposed to have stopped
breeding. :( Not happy...and no one would say...breed humans for the
purpose of showing the "miracle of life" to children. I suppose that
was supposed sound all heart warming and cute, but it really just makes
me throw up a little.

It's also a very dumb move on their part if they want to keep their allies
in the war with the "neighbors" over what they can sell at the farm. I'm
sick and disgusted.

I went there about 2 weeks ago and saw a little black& white bunny sitting
in a cage outside. I went pretty late at night and it was freezing cold.
poor bunny almost had a heart attack when we got out of the car. I felt bad
for the poor little thing. It was really cold, and to be sitting outside he
should at least have a hutch and not a wire cage where the wind blows right
through.

Avoid Sweet Meadow Farm, and warn the owners, that they have had us on
their side, but until they stop with overpopulation of bunnies for the "miracle
of life", they will be avoided. Hurt them in their pockets, like they hurt
bunnies, that need to be neutered and spayed!!!
