Description
A group for the study, conservation, and captive care of Horned Lizards(HLs) aka "Horny Toads" (Genus Phrynosoma). Anyone keeping Horned Lizards in captivity should be properly skilled, as they are not well suited to captivity. Many species are protected in states where they are native. Assistance is given with the ultimate view toward the best interests of the animal. Unqualified persons who have captured a Horned Lizard and want to know how to keep it will be disappointed in the advice they receive. We are not here to tell you where to find, or how to keep a HL you have captured without permit or proper experience.
No wild caught HLs will be sold to the public here, nor allowed to be offered for sale, regardless of whether they were collected legally. Placement of HLs in qualified homes will be facilitated if they cannot be returned to their native habitat. Consideration may be given in the future to offering captive bred HLs. Legally obtained HLs that need a suitable new home will be at the discretion of the administrator to determine that they are being transfered to skilled keepers. This position is also to prevent further exploitation of these lizards through pet trade sales. This group offers discussion, care sheets, Harvester Ants for order, scientific research papers on HLs, and general reptile husbandry topics. There are currently 14 recognized species of Horned Lizard in N. America. 8 of these species are native to the US.
The official website for the author of "The Horned Lizard Husbandry Manual". Managed by a recognized reptile rescuer and member of the HL Conservation Society. It is also the only place to get Harvester Ants for a reasonable price.
