Well, Boku is still missing. This makes week number 3 now. I'm at a loss
as to what else to do to find him and I have a feeling I probably won't
find him. I just hope he's happy wherever he decided to make his home.
We went to the Gainsville, FL reptile and amphibian show yesterday. Was
pretty neat but they had a lot of the same things. Tons of leopard geckos
and frogs and tadpoles. Lots of snakes. Only saw one iguana, and that was
a juvenile rhinoceros iguana. A couple monitors, tegus and quite a few
baby beardies.
The friends I went with bought a baby Brazilian Rainbow Boa. It's a
pretty one. Going to take her/him over to a local reptile store to have
her sexed, they forgot to do that at the show :-(
Well, I guess that's about it for updates from here.

Tracy & the still missing (hopefully happy) Boku

I saw Entrapment this weekend. Had an ig on a leash who was really pissed
about it. Not sure why that scene was even in the movie. Not sure why I
even saw the movie. It was entertaining, but stupid, IMHO.

I would definitely pay a fee for someone like you that I knew would care
properly for my iguana. By the way where are you?

Check with your vet. Many times vet techs will do 'critter sitting' for a
fee, or your vet may be able to recommend someone.

Which leads me into a informal "market conduct" survey. How many of you
on
this IML would pay for a qualified 'critter sitter' to come into your home
and take care of your animals, ( not necessarily just iguanas ) while you
are
away?
I will be losing my job in October and I need to decide what I want to do
with the rest of my life. Loving animals the way I do, I feel this might be
a logical thing, but I need to determine how practical it might be.
Can I get a show of 'claws' as to how many of you might be willing to use
the
services of a pet sitter ? Cats, igs, snakes, frogs, lizards, turtles
etc.....I keep them all and so I do have the necessary experience. Does
anyone think I could make a career out of it? Thanks for your input.

Yep, people get iguanas spayed to prevent future egg-laying problems and
when their iguanas are already having egg-laying problems. :) In order to
be done well, the ig has to have eggs forming already. It apparently makes
it easier to find their ovaries, which are quite small. :>

Some people only want it done in an emergency, if the iguana's life in in
danger due to being egg-bound, while others just want to spare their iguana
from aving to go through the difficulties of egg-laying every year.

Hello all,
Luckily I have 2 willing parents who aren't afraid of Elvis (my ig) and
Chuck (my orange cat) couldn't scare a backward chipmunk. My dad stays to
play with Chuck which greatly amuses Elvis (she is so superior you know).

Until last year I also had a rottweiler named Magnum (euthanized because of
cancer in Feb 98). Because Magnum was 'on duty' protecting the house when I
was gone, it made having anyone come over impossible (even people he knew).
In fact, I kept a huge piece of plywood on hand to block the basement stairs
if anyone had to come by while I was gone to service the furnace. He almost
ate an incautios UPS guy when he opened the screen door to put a package
inside. Magnum shot down the stairs and the door clicked shut just in time
(if it was a cartoon there would have been a rottwieller shaped dent in the
door). It's a good thing the UPS guys' uniform was already brown! : )

When I was home, he would just check out noises and report back. When
people came over he would beg them to pat his head and let him sit on their
laps (being a lap dog is a common misconception among rotties). At the
kennel he was off duty so everyone loved him. Magnum would always have to
be boarded if I was gone overnight. It was kind of a vacation for him, too.

anyway, just an observation with regard to pet sitters, make sure your pets
are willing to accept a stranger and not be stressed or overprotective of
their territory.

Kris & Elvis (i don't care who it is, just as long as they mist me!)

I live in Austin and I use Ronnie Karbach. She's good with Iguana's and she
makes house calls! Her clinic is called Vet Calls, and you can find it in
the yellow pages, or on the Web at http://www.vetcalls.com .

There are some people in Austin who are willing to exchange ig sitting
services, including me. When you plan your vacation, let me know the
details, and maybe we can work something out.

I would like a public comment from the List Admins regarding the IML
policy on taking a comment from a PRIVATE e-mail, and then creating a
flame-bait thread featuring another listmembers name.

IMHO, this is as much of a violoation the list as the same indiviual's
public "joking" about violence against me or his references to me in
scatolgical terms that occured on the "old" IML.

I understand that I took a position that conflicted with IML orthodoxy.
But that should not be an excuse to allow abuse (IMO).

Great. As long as you know what you are getting into, they are
fantastic animals. I got to hang out for a long time with a cousin (or
perhaps aunt) of sapphire's this weekend and I really see the attraction.

Plus I have talked with David Blair several times and seen his animals.
IMHO, he is one of the best folks around in herpdom.

Hi to all on the list. Good to have the IML back, I missed you all. As
usual, I am learning something new every day. I am a relatively new ig
owner, about 7 months now, and Skeeter (girl? boy? who knows...) is
growing and doing great thanks to all the info I have gotten from
everyone on the list. (6.5 " SVL)

I have a fun story to share about a mesh hammock I just got for my ig's
new enclosure. I hung it in the corner below her basking shelf but
she(?) just licked it and crawled back up onto the shelf. The other day
I had her in the tub and while my daughter played with her, I got her
new hammock from her enclosure and hung it onto the bathroom mirror,
near the top under the lights. After her bath, I placed her on the
hammock and she loved it! Raised her head and closed her eyes and just
basked under the lights. Needless to say, the hammock is still hanging
on the mirror and now I just take her in and let her visit while I do my
hair or makeup or whatever. She looks like such a Miss Hollywood girl in
that green hammock, just needs a string of pearls and a tiara to
complete the look. I love it.

Anyway, for those who either have, or are thinking about getting one of
those lizard hammocks, I wanted to give you a new idea. I have
definitely already gotten my $7.99 worth!!

LOL!! Chuckie had one too and LIVED in it! He only left it to eat and go
to the bathroom. I had it in his first tank... now he's too big and in
an enclosure made of wood sides, so I can't hang it in there. You can
also hang them on one side of a tank (so all of the suction cups are
stuck to one side flat against the glass) for a nice climbing device!!

In response to the other Elizabeth's post about her tragedy with basking. .
.

Just thought I'd mention again what I came up with for Carmen last summer.
It works SO WELL.

Carmen's basking cage is 4 ft. x 4 ft. x 2ft. I have created shade by
putting fake (silk) greenery over one side, but as noted, this doesn't
always cool things off enough. I got weary of trekking out there every 30
min. when it was hot to spray her, so came up with a self-mister.

Got a heavy-duty, high-quality brass spray nozzle for my hose at Home Depot.
This is the kind you *turn* to change the flow of the water. I just poke it
through the wire on the top of the cage on the shady side and turn it on
slightly. Right now, when it's 85 degrees or so, I turn it on a little
only. Carmen thermoregulates on her own by leaving her hot basking perch
every 15 minutes and going over under the mist. She spends 30 seconds
cooling of, then heads back up. This is also goo exercise, as she has to
come down off the perch, then climb back up the sides of the cage.

Last August, when it was really hot, I found I was able to keep her outside
safely even on the hottest days. I turned the nozzle on more so the spray
was wider. I probably didn't have to do this, since she's so good about
going back and forth. But I was paranoid. With the spray wider, it was
possible for her to keep her front 2/3 in the full sun and her tail in the
spray, which she frequently did.

I tested the system a lot, and I recommend that anyone who does this do the
same. Do not take risks. Every time I went out there, though, when it was
95 degrees, Carmen was either barely warm or even *cool* to the touch. She
did fantastic all summer and was able to be out much more often than she
would otherwise.

This year I've rigged up a coupler and 2 short hoses so I have one misting
system in Carmen's enclosure and one that goes to Beasley the tortoise's
enclosure.

like it.

>One question: Does your ig has access to a UVB bulb and natural sun?

He does but I just found out that you have to replace them once a year
at least and this thing has got to be ancient. It belonged to my
boyfriends previous iguana. I need to go out and get a new one. I have
always noticed that he loves the sun tho so I try to leave the curtains
open but it only lets direct sunlight in for a small amout of time each
day. You should see it tho...he raises up as high as he can go almost
like he's on his tip toes! Its cute.

I think my boyfriend having an iguana before helped my Drake survive the
last two years of me not knowing what to feed him. He bought me a
vitamen supplement which I use every day and told me a few things like
trying to hold them a lot...which I tried until he got so big! He only
once started getting a lump on his arm and I gave hime more vitamens and
he got better. I am really amazed because he only ate lettuce his whole
first year. I really tried to get him to eat other stuff but always
gave in. Thank goodness I know better now.

I have a question about calcium supplements. A vet told my boyfriend
that cuttlefish bones for birds were good for this. You just scrape a
little onto their food...is that ok?

That's strange. I am no expert yet but from what I have been reading if
someone claims to have a special species of iguana and wants to sell it
for more it is a crock. Am I right...anybody...Anyway I saw a piece on
the MK site (I am learning the lingo see!) that talked about iguana
color. One was the gray heads they have grayish colored heads and they
have horns on their noses. This is what my Drake-monster is and I got
him for 30$ (which is the usual price in canada that I have seen) when
he was a little babe. He had lotsa sisters and brothers too.

Thank you everyone for understanding my situation. It is always very
difficult to lose a pet, especialy one as unique as an iguana.
Unfortunately many people don't understand how anyone could love a
lizard so much. That's why I'm so glad I have the IML to turn to in
times like this.

Still no news on the autopsy results. The vet. who did the autopsy
won't be back in to work until Tuesday evening. Fortunately, yesterday
I was able to pick Lenny up so I could bury him. The vet. was kind
enough to stitch him up nicely after the autopsy. He looked so sweet
with his little eyes closed -- like he was sleeping. I found a nice
spot on a hill in San Jose to put him to rest. I buried him along with
his faverite towel and his food bowl (he always did love to eat).

For anyone who doesn't know, Lenny was the Ig that I rescued almost
three years ago. He was abused by his previous owner and had MBD along
with an abcess on his jaw. His little back was permanently hunched and
crooked and I believe that his growth was stunted. Poor little guy, he
had such a hard life. That is what makes losing him even more
difficult.

Thank you everyone for understanding,
Laurice

P.S. Yesterday I began to make food for the other Igs. I forgot that I
would be making food for one less bowl! What a waste, my other Igs had
so much food that they could not possible eat it all. It was kind of a
sad reminder that Lenny is gone.

Well, it is a misnomer to call a green iguana who has nubs or fleshy
horns on its face a "rhino" or "rhinoceros" iguana, or to consider
green igs who have lots of blue in them as a separate species... ;)

There is a type of _Cyclura_ iguana (which are different from _Iguana
iguana_, aka the green iguana) that is called "rhinoceros" due to the
bony formations on its skull. You can see photos of this type of
iguana (_Cyclura cornuta_ [cornu- is from the Latin 'horn']) as well
as other photos of other _Cyclura_ at David Blair's Live Animals page
at his website at http://www.herpnut.com/liveAnims/index.html.
_Cyclura_ are native to various Caribbean islands, and most are
classified as endangered and have been very expensive (in relation to
the cost of green igs, even when green igs cost over $100), and
require federal permits to ship across state lines. A few of the
Cyclura are threatened, and so are subject to slightly different
laws. The hybrids (Blue Cayman x Rock, _Cyclura nubila_, such as
Marie's Sapphire, my as-yet unnamed male, and their sire Big Blue,
who is pictured at David's site and on page 58 of the de Vosjoli
Green Iguana Manual) are exempt from USFWS and CITES and can be
transported across state lines without permits.

Right now, my baby looks more like a savanna monitor or Ctenosaura
(spiny tailed iguana) as his color is browns and tans...he won't
start turning blue for a couple more years, though he already has the
red sclera on his eyes... :)

Tricia and Napoleon have herp sitter's list at their site.
The web page is

You can look there for sitters in your area and/or submit
your information to be a sitter.

Yeah, thanks for the compliment! I did verify that - for DNA. I
completely forgot about SSRNA (thanks Katie) which can vary from a 1:1
ratio. However, I verified the purine/pyrimidine RATIOS thing. Zenlizard
(I think it was, that you're quoting) is talking about the amount of
purine, which is higher in animal tissues than plant tissues except for
asparagus alone among human-approved vegetables (Going by memory here).
As an egregious example*, there's catfood, which is organ meat packed to
the gills with purines. (Brains, livers and glands are reading off their
DNA into multiple RNA copies so that they can make neurotransmitters and
peptide hormones and things by the metric buttload - other cells are a
bit quieter much of the time.) It's still the amount rather than the
ratio, though, even here. Many animals are unable to handle an unusually
high level of nitrogen wastes from purines, leading to kidney damage and
gout. The pathway for the excretion of pyrimidine is different. The last
time I mentioned this you said my message was worse than Spam, which I
guess was a clever pun on luncheon meat vs. catfood, right, phil?

Oh, look, we agree on people who write without having references handy!

Have you *read* those sources? Can you give me a list of your sources
for your opinion in the above quote? I'll do some work on pulling the
references together and get back to you. (There's a lot more to it than
purines, and it'll take a while to write up.)

Sorry to get back to you so late - I spent the weekend at a party. Oh,
wait - it was *your* party! (It was a lot of fun, too, folks! Thanks,
phil!)

I would pay richly for a critter sitter I could trust (I have 2 cats and
a baby iggie), but I'm also fortunate. I have a friend who loves my
critters as much as I do, and is always willng to sit.
