The United Kennel Club recognized the Kavkazskaya Ovcharka in 1995 (prior to
the drafting of the 1997 RKF breed standard in Russia).  The UKC standard
drafted in 1995, reflected the state of the breed in Russia during the mid
1990s (where a variety of "type" was accepted), under the name Caucasian
Mountain Dog, reflecting the geographical origins (mountain and steppe) of
the breed.  The 1997 Russian Kennel Federation Breed Standard substantially
narrowed the type to the larger, bear-like Georgian dogs.  Galina
Kirkitskaya, President of the Kavkazskaya Ovcharka Club in Russia wrote:
"only the dog of the Georgian type, described in the breed standard and
adopted by the Russian National Breed Club, is considered the purebred
Kavkazskaya Ovcharka of Russia -- the motherland of the great majority of
Caucasians all over the world."

This week, the United Kennel Club changed the name of the breed to Caucasian
Ovcharka in unity with the current Russian breed name...a victory for the
Russian Breed Standard and Georgian Type Caucasian.

2002 marks the transition in the US to one modern breed name and one modern
breed standard based on the Georgian type of Caucasus dog.

Dear all,
i think you should see what i saw posted in the list!
i forward it to justyna Rowinska(Kennel Hunza) and she asked me write her
opinion about Frol too!
In that photo i saw on the net,i cant see any problems in the legs or in the
move and i find him very balanced and correct(his legs are parallel as they
should).i find him outstanding caucasian and a very representative for the
breed!

Justyna Rowinska (Best Polish Caucasian Ovcharka Kennel "HUNZA") asked me to

" Frol is a very typical and representative caucasian and i think he is the

Very nicely put. I was at the show and spent a good deal of time drooling
over Frol. I have never owned a CO, but have been studying, researching and
dreaming about them for about 5 years. I went to the show with the hope of
seeing a real live CO and a real live CAO. I was not disappointed. I have
owned AKC Champion St. Bernards, German Shepherds and Shar Pei that would
earn a Champion title if shown. I was very impressed with Frol, both in
appearance and construction. The picture in the winner's circle did
absolutely nothing for the regal, graceful, powerful and impressive Frol. I
have no vested interest one way or the other. If Frol knocked on my door
tomorrow, he would be welcomed into my home and given a fine spot at the
foot of the bed. The musculature and bone structure were substantial and
pronounced. Overlooking the preponderance of hair, he appeared much like a
Mr. Olympia contestant. If the Incredible Hulk had hair, there would be many
similarities. I do not believe there is anything wrong with the Hulk's legs.

As to the height of his back, I can again add that Frol's back was not too
low. I am 6'4", Frol's back was about level with the top of my hip bone. His
tree trunk neck sat perfectly on his chest and shoulders. The picture looks
odd because the proportions seem to be out of wack, maybe because of the
backdrop used. He is also at a slight angle which seems to distort the
profile a little. Any animal that can support the head that Frol has is
certainly not sickly or lame. That head must weigh 50 lbs. Truly
magnificent. Enough raving, thanks for pointing that out to the folks. As
far as Frol is concerned, he could care less what Yelana has to say. She
does not pay the food bill.

I must say, out of curiosity, I went back to the photo to see if I could find
anything that even seemed wrong with the dog's legs and could not see
anything out of the ordinary. Nice and thick and strong.  Looking for photos
for comparison,  I did find a photo elsewhere of Pharoan in snow up to his
knees looking as if his legs are cut off.  Might Yelena have seen this
picture and thought it Frohl by mistake?  Yelena, don't worry, his legs
aren't cut off!  They are really fine!
