Does anyone know what happened to Rich ?
He hasn't returned my emails or messages
to this forum.
I still need a time to arrive at
405 park Ave, home of (David & Donna
and their two cockers, Buddy & Gracie)
for the Nov-27 parade

What time are you asking people to show up
for the parade ? And how long did you have to
wait around last year before the dogs were able to
start marching ?
If you have the name of someone who is interested in
getting something done at the Collingswood Pool
next August, ask them to come to the parade.
If someone from Collingswood doesn't come forward
to organize an event, it wont happen.
I've stopped visiting Knights park because of one
person who is always there and this will be the only
time I see you guys.

Iowa City Iowa raised $8 grand last month in Year-2
and they are expecting to do $10 grand next year
which will be Year-3 for them.
These events are extremely popular in the midwest
and they could be here too but they take a lot of
planning and somebody needs to be willing to spend
a lot of time and energy to make sure everything goes
well and the event reaches it's full potential.
The canine charity receiving the money, needs to have
enough people involved to coordinate the event.
The first step is to find one or two canine charites
and then getting the idea approved by Collingswood
officials. The pool over near Cooper River park
is owned by the Town, correct ?
Once one town does it, other nearby towns tend to
follow.

That's a great idea! I'd gladly donate $10 so Cinder could swim
for an afternoon before they drain the pool. Just draining the pool
for the season, without getting the potential financial benefit of
such an event, would be a shameful waste of natural resources.
Count me in.

I know a way to raise money for your canine charity
by using the Collingswood swimming pool for the last day
of the season. You probably would need to get your
charity approved by the town first.
If you have any influence with pool officials or want
to pursue this let me know. I know everything you would
need to know to plan an event.
I'm pretty sure the Pennsauken pool is going to be doing
a canine swim event this year but they have not begun to
plan the event yet and it would be easier to plan both
events together.

I unfortunately can't walk any of my dogs in the parade because I am on the parade committee and will be very busy that morning. But, if there is anybody that has friends or relatives who would like to walk a dog inthe parade, with a little planning we could arrange to bring a dog or two or three from the shelter to walk inthe parade. We did that one year and brought 7 dogs. They had a great time and just loved the long walk and all were adopted by people who saw them in the parade. (Warning: it's very difficult to take them back, you don't want to see them go!!)
Another thought, would anybody be able to hand out flyers for our "Pet Pictures with Santa" fundraiser for the Collingswood Stray Animal Fund. I should have all the details worked out and the flyers ready this week. We will probably take the pictures at Scissors and Suds (although it is a little cramped when we do it there.) Unless anyone has an alternative location in mind. We'll also have dog and cat toys and treats for sale for your pets Christmas gifts. And, there is a raffle going on now at Scissors and Suds, $1.00 a chance for a 13" color television and a Harley Davidson Motorcycle Telephone.
We have several outstanding vet bills right now from helping a bunch of animals just in the last month or so:
"Scooter" was a white pomeranian/mini American eskimo mix who was hit by a car on Route 130. She suffered a fractured pelvis, but was also pregnant. She had an emergency c-section and spay surgery which delivered two live puppies, two did not make it. Mom recovered with her puppies in foster care with Terri Rodgers and her family. Mom and pups have all been adopted.
"Selma" is a 6-year-old Bichon/poodle mix who was surrendered by her owner who could not take care of her anymore. She had very bad allergy skin and ears, and a very white cell count from infection in her gums from bad back teeth. She needed antibiotics, steroids, ear drops and a dentistry. She recovered nicely and has been adopted.
"Three Little Kittens" are currently in foster care and will be ready to go home in about 3 weeks. There are two gray tabbies, one male and one female. The other is a a black and white male. These kittens were left at the door to Collingswood Vet Hospital. They were malnoursihed and would have died soon. They are gaining weight everyday and are healthy and active.
"Lilly the Puppy" was also abandoned and found eating from a trash can, but she was very sick with Parvo. She was only 12 weeks old and I though she deserved a chance at life, so the kind folks at Rothman Animal Hospital treated her, but unfortunately she did not make it. She just broke my heart. She was so sweet.
Well, just an update as to what is going on with the stray fund. Let me know about the dogs for the parade and also the flyers for the Pictures with Santa. Also, if anybody wants to volunteer to be Santa or help the day of the pictures, we'd love to have you.
Heads up everybody! Time to walk the dogs. Once again we'll be
led down Haddon Ave. in the Collingswood Holiday parade by
the best dogs in the world.
We'll meet, as usual at 405 park Ave, home of (David & Donna
and their two cockers, Buddy & Gracie)
Any ideas on how to make the event more fun this year?
How many of you plan to join the walk? (I'd like to have a sense
for refreshment planning). Anybody want to volunteer some
refreshments? We'll have hot chocolate & cookies as in the past,
unless somebody has a better idea.
Any ideas about representing/promoting a dog-oriented charity
this year? The US War Dog Memorial Association is a favorite of
mine. Rescue dogs?
Remember, if you can, to bring a digital camera so we can get
more pics on this site.
This week I'll be putting up the flyer at the dog park, pet stores,
vets offices, groomers, coffee shops, and other bulletin boards
around town.
Let me know if you need copies of the flyer. Or you can print out a
small version of the flyer from the photos section of this site. Just
trim off the extraneous stuff and you'll have a 3.5 x 4.5 mini poster
to post on your company bulletin board or at your favorite
supermarket.
And last, but by no means least: Have your dog bring a friend!
Ask friends, relatives and co-workers if they'd like to take a short
stroll with their dog on Saturday morning Nov. 27.
People, young and iold get a real kick out of seeing all the dogs
in the parade, and the dogs love the attention too. Let's see if we
can wow the crowd this year with the biggest pack of dogs yet!
See you then-

New Jersey residents are currently facing two pieces of legislation that would directly affect dog ownership in the GardenState.
The first would prohibit insurance companies from discriminating against homeowners based on the breed of dog they own, which would mean great news for pets and their people. This would prevent people from having to give up their pets to shelters due to lack of home insurance coverage, and this would allow more people to adopt harder-to-place breeds.
The second bill being considered (S1718) would meanvery bad news for all pet owners and their pets, as well as shelter pets waiting for loving homes. This breed specific legislation would require anyone who owns a dog to prove that it isn’t a pit bull. A great deal of breed misidentification would result, and even a therapy dog that is accurately or inaccurately defined as a pit bull mix would require the dog owner to muzzle the dog when off the property, use a leash under 3 feet long, have liability insurance and confine the dog in a permanent enclosure. If the dog owner can not get the required liability insurance coverage or can’t afford it, then the person’s pet would be seized by the municipality.

Ben is a 12"-long land Tortoise who left our backyard on Sunday

Where have you been? We have been going up to the park, usually closer to 6:00 or so. I did post the pet photo contest for everyone on the web site. You must have been really busy.
If anyone is interested, the Collingswood Stray Animal Fund will have a double space at the May Fair, in the area of Scissors and Suds. We will have volunteers who will bring dogs from the shelter and hang out with them in hopes their forever family will find them there. If anyone is interested in helping out, we could use you. The Stray Fund could use people to hang out at the tables to accept donations and we will be selling dog and cat toys and various other miscellaneous items (like dog and cat picture frames) that I have collected. I find items in stores that are on sale and reduced to very cheap. I buy them and then sell then for a little more and all the money goes into the stray cund. We will have a lollipop dog and cat, where you make a donation and pull a lollipop, if there is a colored dot on the end of the lollipop stick, you get to pick a dog or cat toy. Of course, we will be handing out info about spay/neuter, pet adoption and ownership and mots importantly about the Collingswood Stray Animal Fund and how people can help. I hop we can raise enough money so tht we can begin to fund some low cost spay/neuter.
If you need any other info, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me.
Now that the blizzard & Monsoon season is over cinder has
been getting out to the park more regularly. We haven't been
seeing many of the regulars in numers of more than 1 or 2 at a
time. When are you going there? We try to get there as soon after
5pm as possible.

post them here. I didn't find out about the benefit photo contest at

Hi Again,
Is anyone ineterested in helping with a couple of fundraisers
for the Collingswood Stray Animal Fund. Our funds are running low
and come Spring the money will definitely be needed. I am planning a
pet photo contest and would love some help with all the details.
Also in planning an event to announce the winners. There is also an
opportunity to have a table at the matinee performance of State Fair
at the Scottish Rite. If I can get the details of the photo contest
together quickly, that would be a great venue to hand out flyers to
announce it. I also need something to sell to raise some funds. The
dog and cat treat baskets are getting old. Any ideas. Please give
me a call if you can help. 854-4628
Thanks Again,
Nancy
Hello Everyone:
Happy New Year! Just wanted to give you an update on "Thomas"
the dog who was hit by a car and had the dislocated hip. "Thomas"
hip was relocated and he spent the holidays in foster care with Mo
and her daughter and their dog "Jack" and cat "Henry". "Thomas"
turned out to be a very sweet dog. He just wants to be right next to
a person. He has now been adopted by Jill and Daryl and their
greyhound "Stanley". "Thomas" hip is out of the bandage and he can
now use his leg, but he developed a wound on his foot which needs
daily bandage changes. The wound is getting better now and "Thomas"
is doing well at his new home.
Thanks to Mo for her terrific care of "Thomas" and allowing him
to rehab at her home.
Also, "Mardi Paws" is a fundraiser being held at the
Philadelphia Convention Center on Feb 21. It will benefit the Camden
County and Gloucester County Animal Shelters. The COnvention Center
will be transformed into New Orleans. There will be good food,
drinks and a silent auction. Tickets are $60. If we have ten people
we can get a reserve a table, otherwise it is first come. Let me
know if you are interested. Hope everyone is well.
Thanks,
Nancy
Greetings All!
Glad to see people have been using the site to do good works
for area dogs.
Spread the good word! Please tell more people about the site.
Copy and past the URL in any e-mails to other Collingswood
residents and dog lovers. I'm concerned we'll stagnate if we
don't keep adding new people who can contribute to the website
and share dog news.
I've renamed the photo album for the 2003 Holiday Parade so it's
a little more obvious when you go to the photos section. Feel free
to add pics to any of the existing albums or create your own. The
pics of Thomas are great!
Maybe someone could create a photo album of dogs that need
homes. We could post links to it wherever it seems appropriate.
Speaking of links, I've added quite a few links to the Links list,
including one to Mardi Paw 2004 in Philly, which will help benefit
Camden/Gloucester County Animal Shelters. If you know of a
dog event or see an article in the paper, please post a link to it,
so everyone can be equally enlightened.
See you at the park!
- Rich Greene
Hi everyone!
The shelter will be open today. I'll be in Knight Park at 1:00
for anyone interested in caravaning down there. I'll explain what's
going on with the volunteer program when I see everyone. They are re-
vamping it to make it better for the volunteers and so they don't
have any dogs stollen too. Which has happened a few times this year
(usually the unneutered male, dog aggressive pitbull). But we'll be
fine, they know we're coming.
See you at 1:00,
Thanks,
Nancy
Many thanks for your quick response. Yes, I would love to meet Thomas. Just
give me a call -- I'm somewhat flexible, with just a little notice.
I have most recently worked with the horses in Franklinville (46 abused/neglected).
The animals are so wonderful, as are many of the people involved. Unfortunately,
sometimes the "political" dynamic gets in the way of the caring.
Look forward to hearing from you when you get a chance. My cellular # is the
best -- 856/220-7108.
Hello!
It was very nice to hear from you. I got your telephone message this
afternoon, but things got crazy for me and I did not get a chance to call you
back. I have a borough commissioners meeting to go to tonight, but if I get
home at a decent time, I'll give you a call. Sometimes they are very short and
sweet. If not I'll give you a call tomorrow. Thanks for taking an interest in
Thomas. Things keep changing with him all the time. We have had an offer
from someone to pay a good portion of the femoral head surgery. That is
probably the best solution for him, but it was the most expensive. So, as it
stands
now, Thomas will have surgery on Friday at Winslow Animal Hospital. The
Collingswood Stray Fund will pay $300, Rothman Animal Hospital will pay $300 and
our donor will pay the balance. The girls at Rothman have fallen in love with
him.
My only concern is the woman who is offering to pay part of the surgery
is the person who has brought all the bad publicity on the shelter, making
things up as she went along. She tends to be very controlling. Rothman Animal
Hospital seems to be able to get along with her and my contact there is telling
me it will be fine. She never offers to get involved with the adoption
process or anything. For now I just want to get him out of pain and the best
possible hope for the future. I'm going to take some pictures of Thomas, but I
don't have the ability to put them on the web site. We'll figure out a way for
you to meet him. Do you have any time this week? We could visit him at
Rothman Animal Hospital. Or after his surgery when he gets in foster care here
in
Collingswood.
You sound a lot like me. I love learning. In fact, I spent the 17th to
25th at the Ocean County Police Academy taking the Animal Cruelty
Investigators Certification Course. It was great. IF I can get the
commissioners to
pass a resolution and appoint me their Animal Cruelty Investigator, it will make
me a real part of law enforcement for animals.
Well, I gotta go to this meeting. Talk to you later.
Thanks, Nancy
I left a message on your machine just before noon today. But after re-reading your
e-mail (without my many morning distractions), was compelled to drop you a line.
First, let me say, you guys are an amazing group! I'm honored and excited to have
been brought "in the loop". I met Cinder's "Dad", Richard Greene, at Pet Smart
and turned him on to some info on Animal Assisted Therapy. Richard has been
kind enough to include me in your group. Soooo sorry I missed the Parade.
By way of introduction, my name is Tanya Rochetti. My husband is an optometrist
with practices in Cherry Hill and Lawrenceville. I have been actively involved in the
practice since we started a bit over twenty years ago--never needed a "sick" day
the whole time and took many less holidays and vacation days than we give our
employees. Just couldn't tear myself away -- my work was my passion and my
pleasure. We have the GREATEST patients in the world.
At any rate, in the past few years a variety of animals seem to have appeared in
my life and tugged with such force on my heart, that I made the decision to
"semi-retire" from the practice. I have been in a "hands-on" exploration/discovery
phase for a number of years. In Janaury, 2001, I took Phil Arkow's course on Animal Assisted Therapy. Would highly recommend -- great expeience. Since my "retirement" February 14th, I have embarked on a path of formal
education/training. In March I received training in Equine Massage (Round Hill,VA
We have had standardbred horses since 1991, and began breeding two of them
in 2001. My experiences massaging them, even before the formal training, have
been extraordinary, to say the least. Because cats are a natural part of barn life,
we have an extended family of four cats (Phil & Lil, brother & sister, SPOILED --
came to live with us Christmas, 1998 and Salem and Mitzi, rescued and given
TEMPORARY refuge April, 2000 and October, 2001 - HA!) I have many canine
friends -- they line up for a freebie massage when I go to the barns and farms!
My latest LOVE is my Grand Dog, Buddy - a Bishon.
To make a short story long ....... my focus these past few months is to get as much
formal education in my area of interest. I have received certifications in Reiki Levels I and II, Jin Shin Jyutsu, Integrated Energy Therapies and am currently
exploring the use of Essential Oils. The most exciting discoveries on this journey
have been the many amazing people (and animals) who have crossed my path.
And now, to be included in this Exciting group -- well that's just the Reddi Whip on
the pumpkin pie!!
There is a point to this long-winded story. Though my bag is not completely full and
ready to load on the sleigh -- waiting for delivery of essential oils, therapy videos,
etc., my HEART is very full. My intentions are pure and honest and my instincts,
to date, have been good. I would love to meet Thomas and be involved in his
very remarkable life.
You may e-mail if you wish or feel free to call. Cellular # is 856/220-7108.
Blessings to you and yours!!
Warmest regards,

Hi Everyone!
Just a quick update on Thomas. Currently, he is at Rothman
Animal Hospital. Dr. Rest and Dr. Liez are going to try and put his
hip back in place. They will then put a special wrap on it that will
hopefully immobilize the joint and give it a chance to heal.
Sometimes this does not work and it pops back out again. If that
happens, then we'll just let it form it's own false joint. But at
least this way he will have a chance at a normal hip joint. They will
also neuter him while he is under anesthesia for the hip. They will
also monitor his urine and stool output, because he was in som much
pain, that he was not going until he couldn't stand it anymore and it
would just flood out of him. He's in too much pain to try and
balance to lift his leg or squat. He's not sure what to do yet.
Hopefully, today he will have some improvement. ROthman's stray fund
will work with our COllingswood Stray ANimal fund to help cover the
cost. The best news is Maureen (Mo) has volunteered to let Thomas
rehab at her house. Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!!!
This is my next update: I'm going to make-up some flyers to
help raise some money for the stray fund. We have about $600, but
Thomas' care will probably eat that up quickly and then if there is
another emergency (which there always is, we will be short funds.
Thomas' is an adopted Colls dog, he actually came from either Camden
or Gloucester. If we hadn't stepped up to care for him, he probably
would have been euthanized by now. I can't waite for everyone to
meet him. He is such a love.
Also, if you read Ed's message it was a little confusing, so
I'll try and clarify. There are two different things going on
there. The first was funds needed for the COllingswood Stray Animal
Fund. That is the fund I started when I began doing animal control
for Collingswood. I realized that when you pick up a sick or injured
animal that has to go the vet before it can go to the shelter, there
is nobody to pay the bill. But, everyone can be very proud of our
Collingswood government, because before I started the stray fund,
Brad Stokes our administrator made sure every bill was submitted to
the commissioners, and they approved and paid every one of them.
Yeah!!! I started the stray fund so the paying of these bills would
not become a political sore spot for the commissioners and Brad. I'm
sure at some point, someone running against them would try and make
that a negative political issue. So this way, if people donate to
the fund the tax dollars are not footine the bill, it is all
voluntary. Basically, the fund was started to cover the cost of
medical expenses for sick and injured animals picked up by animal
control within the town of Collingswood. It has also covered the
cost of bottles and formula for abandoned kittens that were to young
to go the shelter. I hope in the future it will grow to cover the
cost of doing humane education programs in all of our grammer
schools. Teaching children to interact with and understand animals,
both wild and domestic. Teaching them to be kind, caring and
respectfull to animals will help them do the same towards people.
Alot of kids don't learn this at home anymore. We can also teach
them about spay/neuter to keep the pet population down so that so
many unwanted pets will no longer be euthanized.
The next issue that Ed spoke about was needing supplies. The
supplies are always needed at the Camden COunty Animal Shelter which
is located in Blackwood. This is where I take any animals whose
owners can not be located. Or where they can go temporarily until
the owners can reclaim them. The more supplies they can have
donated, the more money it frees up for advertising, better quality
food, etc. and getting more dogs and cats adopted. They can always use
bleach, paper towels, dry dog and cat food, dog and cat toys,
blackets, towels, kitty litter, office supplies (post it notes, pens
paper clips, staples, 8 1/2 by 11 printer paper (white or color),
manilla folders etc), antibacterial dish soap, hand soap, toilet
paper, polaroid film, puppy and kitten formula.
If you want to donate, you can take it there yourself (call me for
directions 854-4628 or the shelter 401-1300) or you can leave it on
my front porch anytime (333 Virginia Ave). Or, we can organize a
trip from Knight park to visit the shelter as a group. I can give
you a tour and we can walk dogs. They have a fenced play yard to
take dogs out in and there is a huge field next to the shelter to
walk the dogs. It's a lot of fun. On Wednesdays, I park my truck
behind the high school and whoever jumps in, we go to the shelter to
walk dogs, or give puppies a bath or play with kittens or cats. The
kids love it. If they haven't been able to go in a couple weeks,
they call me and tell me they miss going to the shelter. That would
be a great thing for us to do as a group. If you're concerned about
some of the negative publicity that has been in the Courier the past
few months, please call me and I'll fill you in. Don't believe what
you read. It's a political ploy for a group who wants to take over
management of the shelter.
Anyway, soory for the length here, got on a roll. Please don't
hesitate to call me if you would like any more info on any of the
above. (854-4628 or cell 366-4901) Thanks, Hope everyone had a
great Thanksgiving.
Nancy
Hey Gang,
I was chatting with Nancy and found out that the Collingswood
prevention of cruelty to animals cause needs money. So I'm asking
EVERYONE from the Knight's Park Gang to think about ways to raise
money. Example, car washes, bake sales, cookies sales, yard sales,
photo ops...etc! We need to get things moving pretty fast...they will
need things such as bleach, blankets, dry dog food, toys, & leashes!
I have spoken to a few people about this already and they are eager
to help also. The one thing we can do in the winter time is sew dog
neck wraps. I don't know how to sew, but I will learn...Mo has
graciously offered to teach me....so if anyone can sew....PLEASE, let
me know and join us!
Please feel free to call me with any ideas or e-mail me at:
silentheron1@...
Again, if we all just do a little bit we can make a change in all
these needy dogs lives!!
I want to personally thank Mo for stepping up to the plate and
temporarIly adopting Thomas, the Lab that was was thrown from a car
in Camden! Way to go MO...koodles to you!!!!
Ed, Bob & Ty
thanks to everyone who walked their dogs in the Collingswood
Holiday Parade this morning. we had over 17 dogs by the time
we finished. As always, the crowd loves the dogs and many kids
(and grown-ups) got to pet the dogs as we made our way down
Haddon Ave.
There were many new faces this year and word has spread.
People even came from over in Philly to join our walk.
Despite low 40º weatherand strong breezes we had a great time.
Special thanks to David & Donna for letting us bivouac in their
front yard.
Pictures will be up shortly in the Photos section of this site. If you
have pictures of your own, please post them.

Hi everyone!
Would you please pass this info along to anyone who might be
able to help?
"Thomas" is a 1-2 year old lab mix. He is chocolate in color.
He was thrown out of a car on Rte 676 last Saturday and then hit by
another car. Luckily (or not) he only suffered a dislocated right
hip. I have taken him to three vets to make sure we're doing the
right thing for him. The consensus is that we should give him rest
for 2-3 weeks, leash waking only and no rough play. Just TLC and
Rimadyl for pain. In that time, a false joint should form and he
will be out of pain, with nothing remaining but a slight limp. THe
surgery to correct this would cost about $1000 (maybe less if I beg
and plead enough!!!) If he has the surgery he will get arthritis in
that area, so we would like to give him the chance to heal on his
own. The problem is: He can't do the rehab at the shelter, they're
full and many other dogs will lose their lives if they keep him. So
he needs foster care quickly. The Rimadyl will be provided and
anything else he needs I can get. He just needs a place to chill out
for a couple weeks.
"Thomas" weighs 50 lbs. and could use to put on a little weight,
but not just yet. Staying on the lighter side for now is to his
advantage. He won't have extra weight pulling on his hips. He is a
sweetheart. He thinks he should be right next to you all the time.
He sat in the chair with my daughter at the vets office. He is very
laid back and seems to be fine with other dogs, although he can only
visit while being on a leash. Cats I'm not sure of, but by his
personality seems very reserved and I don't think he would give a cat
a second thought. If anyone can take "Thomas" in, even for a few to
weeks to allow him to recover, that would be great. Then he could go
to the shelter to be adopted. Please don't hesitate to call me (856)
854-4628 or cell (856) 366-4901 if you want more info.
Thanks very much,
Nancy Welsh
