Libellennieuwsbrief Nederland 09:03 Zondag 29 maart 2009 Inleiding De Nederlandse libellenstudiedag is al weer een paar weken terug. In juni dit jaar is er een internationale 'libellenstudiedag', georganiseerd door de World Dragonfly Association (WDA). De WDA heeft op dit moment misschien wel minder leden dan de NVL, wat natuurlijk erg jammer is. In deze nieuwsbrief informatie over de WDA en een oproep om lid te worden. De betalende leden maken het mogelijk dat 10% van het ledenbestand (bijv. in ontwikkelingslanden) gratis of goedkoop lid is. Lidmaatschap is met 70 euro/jaar misschien niet goedkoop, maar biedt ondersteuning aan de libellenonderzoek wereldwijd en geeft toegang tot een schat aan informatie. Momenteel zijn er zo’n vijf Nederlanders lid. Twintig moet toch haalbaar zijn? Meer over de WDA staat in onderstaande brief van voorzitter Gordon Pritchard. I am writing to you to ask you to consider sharing this joy with like-minded people by joining the Worldwide Dragonfly Association. The WDA is now in its 12th year and has grown over this time to be a vibrant and successful organization, always looking for new ways to encourage our science. Some of the advantages that membership offers are: Biennial International Symposia give the opportunity to meet with fellow students of the Odonata and discuss our common interests in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Our Symposia so far have been held in the The Association’s operation is governed by a Constitution and By-Laws (see http://ecoevo.uvigo.es/WDA/dragonfly.htm) and a Biennial General Meeting is held during each International Symposium. At the BGM members are able to make their views known to the democratically elected Board and vote on issues brought up by the Board. The WDA publishes the INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ODONATOLOGY twice a year on 1 April and 1 October. This journal has grown from strength to strength and is now in its 12th volume, with Volume 12 (2) appearing in October as a special issue dedicated to the memory of Philip Corbet. Among the many attractive features of IJO are that - the journal is listed by ISI; - it has a good distribution among odonatologists; - it has a rapid review process; - the printing and layout are of extremely high quality; - there are no page charges and colour photographs for new taxa are published free of charge. Currently we have a very active committee exploring ways to improve the dissemination of work on Odonata, particularly ways in which we can incorporate electronic publishing into our journal. The International Dragonfly Fund (IDF), in cooperation with the WDA, publishes ODONATOLOGICAL ABSTRACTS in January and July. All issues, beginning with the July 2000 issue, are posted on the WDA's website in password-protected form and are available only to members. The Association provides grants for projects (including travel grants for young scientists to attend biennial Symposia) relating to (i) conservation of dragonflies or their habitats, and (ii) odonatological research. These grants are administered by WDA's Conservation and Fund Committee (CFC). Vier maal per jaar geeft de NVL een Nieuwsbrief uit. Daarnaast verschijnt er tweemaal per jaar het blad Brachytron met artikelen over ecologie, gedrag en levenswijze van libellen, wetenschappelijke mededelingen en boekbesprekingen. Wilt u lid worden van de NVL? Dat kost slechts 20 Euro per jaar en voor jongeren tot 25 jaar 10 Euro.
