Here is a forward from one of my favorite Aussies.....apparently in some
parts of the world, when a bitch is in heat she has a "Nixon". Read on, I
think we have all been here. By the way, the pukes she refers to was a good
case of food poisoning..........jann

Hi gang, I am off in the am to a dog show, I will be publically humiliated
in the staffbull ring by untrained puppies. Belle has initiated me well in
public humiliation, she wrote the book..........

I have set this list on un-moderated but it is still asking me for approval
on posts.....I am not screening them and don't really want to. So in case
you post to the list and nothing shows up, when I get in on Sunday I will
release the messages and try to straighten this out...Sorry, but I will work
out the kinks........

Everyone have a great and safe weekend.jann

Jane,

It was only a point but it meant a lot to me since I haven't won anything in

Hi
Oh no not about fairness... more about size and clip. For instance, I've
always been told that smaller dogs do better in the Mid Atlantic area than in
the Northeast. Someone mentioned color the other day...I can't speak to that
, but it does seem, across the Country, that curly retrievers get put up for
Breed way more than lion trims.

Hello all. I took Dot (Turnabout Dots A Lot of Fun -- the Lowchen) to her
first show today just to visit and get an idea of the sounds and smells
before it counts. Anyway, SHE LOVED IT! Tail up high and pranced all over
the show site. She visited with anyone who even glanced at her and was so
happy. Taylor (my 4 year old daughter) was so proud of her and just about
burst when anyone asked her a question about Dot. A reporter even
photographed us grooming Dot for the local newspaper! And to make the day
even better Glory (Turnabout Cruzin to Glory - the PWD) won winner's bitch.

Now to those who responded about grooming the Lowchen with a 30 blade -- all
I have to say is HOLY COW THAT IS SO CLOSE!!!! I went ahead and shaved Dot
today and it is so funny looking to almost see her skin. I think I will
stick to a reverse ten blade from now on.

Lisa, Dot did not even make a sound or fight when I started to shave her. I
even shaved the portion of the tail that is supposed to be shaved and left
what would be the plume alone. She did not even move! You are a genius in
your "torture" or touch desensitization. I haven't had any problems since
and her tail is almost back to where it should be!!! I LOVE DR DUFFY!!

Well, I really need to go to bed now. Good night!

I'm hoping that we do get some trackers. Tripp is ready for his TDX but just
hasn't been lucky enough to have his name pulled in the draw......we've been
alternate #4 and alternate #8. This summer we have started a little VST and
I would love to be able to talk to someone about tracking on nonvegetated
surfaces.

WOW-we may be asking you training questions.......As for the color or clip,
I think the retriever clips are easier to finish. Coloring I am not sure is
an issue....Morgin would be a better authority on that. There were a couple
of times where I felt Bravo lost because he was brown in the puppy
classes...As a Special I have no idea.......jann

Hi!

My name is Lynn Rohlf and I'm from Fort Atkinson, WI near Madison. I
have a 14 yr.old Golden Retriever, a 3 yr.old female PWD and a 1 yr. old
male PWD. Plus one cat and one husband. I co-own Lily and my husband
wasn't sure he wanted this breed but now thinks she is the best dog
we've ever owned. Now Alex, Lily's puppy, is trying his patience.

I must say the world of show dogs is a totally new experience for me and
it brings a lot of pleasure and frustration. The best part is meeting
all the great dogs and their people. We had a handler show Lily and I
got to be one of the nervous Mom's ringside. Lily's show career was
pretty consistent. She is a soft curly black with a white chest in a
retriever clip. Alex is a wavy double-ticked in a lion clip. He either
does great or bombs. Any thoughts on clips and color?

Lily got her JWD at our first PWDCA National Specialty in '98 and we are
working on the AWD. Alex is in obedience classes and loves to swim. I
am the president of our local kennel club and teach Puppy Kindergarten
and help with the obedience classes. We put on an annual Fun Match and
hold several seminars each year. Chris Bach has been the featured
speaker the past two years.

My co-owner has become my friend and mentor. She guides me through all
the health and breeding issues.

I'm glad to be a part of this list so I can ask all the "dumb" questions
I've been thinking of and hopefully get some insightful answers.

Julie. everyone has something to offer, just wait. The opportunity will
present itself....Sega sounds like Belle, but Belle doesn't like water in any
state. I call her the Portuguese NON-water dog. Her belief is that she is
just pretty enough to grace the boat without work----a real Southern Belle.

Have you tried going in with the dogs or doing retrieving? As I said, one
dog likes the water and one doesn't here...............

Good luck and and hopefully someone from the water camp can offer
advice..........jann

Hi,

My name is Louise Mowbray and my PWD partner is Tripp (Turnabout Triple Sec
TD). I'm interested in obedience, agility, and tracking. (I hope the list
will also discuss tracking) . I've had gordon setters for years and years,
one english cocker (who has all the titles in the world but isn't much fun to
live with). Tripp is my second PWD.

I'm into inducive training and recommend that Alisa try to locate Patty Russo
who is a top inducive trainer in the Northeast. Patty's tapes and seminars
have probably helped me more than anything else. Leslie Nelson is also in
the northeast (somewhere) and she has an obedience school based on inducive
methods. These folks base their training on operant conditioning......use a
bridge word just like others use a clicker.

I recommend Sandy Ganz's book "Tracking from the Ground Up" for anyone who is
getting started tracking. She also has a video tape that is excellent for
the people who want to see how it is done. (My gordon's mother is one of the
stars). Sandy describes everything in great detail. I like Sandy's use of
food in introducing tracking because it helps teach dogs to keep their nose
near the ground. Many of my first tracking dogs got into trouble because
they air scented too much. Since I've used Sandy's methods I haven't had
that problem.

Louise Mowbray and Tripp
Lewisville, North Carolina

I'm looking for new ways to motivate Tripp. Food is OK but doesn't give him
the drive I would like. The only thing that really works is to play tug.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi
I am Marilyn Coughlin, from Owego NY and the proud owner of four
Portuguese Water Dogs. Curls,my oldest is almost eleven. My others are
Hannah,Liberty, and MIlagre. I also have a Pointer named Hazel.( I
somehow aquired her!)

I was basically an obedience person before I aquired Curls. She
introduced me to the world of conformation.
I am an owner handler, that for some reason doesn't mind losing.<G> (not
that much that I want to quit!) I did have a handler put back to back
majors on Hannah. That is the day I became I die - hard owner handler.
Hannah should have finished with a four point major, and I was so upset
when I thought she had finished without me on her. I was elated to find
out the major went from a four point to a three point!!! The handler
says that was the first time he ever had a client so upset that the dog
finished and so glad to find out that she didn't. I have owner handled
exclusively ever since.

My obedience methods have changed to using a clicker, although in my area
I am on my own. :-( I recently became interested in agility, and want to
do waterwork with my pup. (14 months old) If any of you have met Milagre
- I must find things for him to do!!! My problem is in my area none of
the classes are from truly experienced insructors and I feel I would
rather learn on my own than be taught wrong by them. I am sure this list
will help a lot! :-) I agree the Morgin Spencers book is
excellent, although I am still reading it!

I am looking forward to this list, sounds like a great idea! I am on
digest because on webtv there is not much mail space. So it may take me a
little while to respond to any messages

Pugsly) and my lovely brown PWD (Sega). Oscar is 16; Pugsly is 5; and Sega
is 9 months old. I'm a new PWD owner and I show Sega, but I'm taking the
Summer off because the weather is great for water. I'd really like to get
her into water work, but the training club meets in the middle of the week
and my work schedule thus far hasn't permitted me to break away. Almost
every weekend morning; however, we head off to Santa Cruz. There's a
terrific dog-friendly beach that's almost completely surrounded by cliffs
where the dogs can roam off leash. Sega and Pugs love it (so do I)! The
amazing thing is that Pugs is more apt to get into the ocean (usually
chasing a ball) than Sega. She's really intimidated by the waves...although
she'll readily jump into a lake or pool...and Pugs won't. I hope she comes
around eventually. I hear there are other PWDs that frequent that beach...we
just haven't bumped into them yet.

Pugsly is an old fan of flyball. (He went to classes when I lived in
Chicago). I'm very excited because I've enrolled Sega and Pugsly in a
beginners flyball class starting up at the end of July. I hear agility is
alot of fun too...I'd love to get Sega into that...It's a shame I can't do
everything. I wonder how well she will do. Pugs loves it because he lives
for the tennis ball. I think Sega prefers the social interaction. (I think
she'll be more interested in watching what the other dogs are doing...and
playing with them.) Anyone out there have any experience in this?

I don't have any advice to offer. I'm hear primarily to benefit from others'
experiences and advice. I'm a complete novice in training and showing.

Hi All
I'm Jane Freeman..owned by Duff, Boo and Daisy. We live in Providence, RI.
along w/Stu, who some of you may know as the Treasurer of the PWDCA. Boo and
Daisy do the breed ring thing...altho Daisy can't wait to put it behind her.(
10 pts and counting) I compete in agility w/both Daisy and Duff and on
occassion in Water, when they feel like retrieving ( this is a very large
sore spot for me :-)) After a week of "splash" camp and being totally fried
on all the training, Daisy has finally gone back in the water!!
I'm interested in hearing what and if you all think there is a difference in
"showing" in different parts of the country?
Thanks, Jann for this new "community"

Hi, my name is Alisa Bonnette, I live in Plainfield NH with my daughter and
two dogs; one is a Portuguese Water Dog. My PWD, Maggie (Maggie Dea Bryn
Delmar, CD, CGC) is in training for Open. We also began agility classes just
for fun, but Maggie has caught on so well and enjoys it so much, I might
consider competing with her. Maggie is doing well in her Open training, but the
only local instructor that uses positive methods has never competed in Open and
can't give me the instruction I really need to polish our performance.

Maggie is just beginning to show some boredom with the obedience classes and
I need to look for ways to make it more fun--quickly! The other evening, during
an obedience class we took a short break and used some of the agility equipment,
whatever the dogs liked best. Up to that point it was as if Maggie was deaf and
blind. She paid me absolutely *no* attention. After doing one or two things in
agility she was "up" and concentrating on me and doing great. I think I will
continue to work toward competition in Open because we're so close, but unless I
find a way to make it fun for Maggie I may not try to continue beyond that. I
think I'll approach the instructor and ask if it's OK to continue to take short
breaks to use agility equipment to keep Maggie interested in what's going on.

I'm also interested in tracking. I've never done it, but I think it could
be a lot of fun. If anyone on this list is experienced with tracking I'd be
very interested in anything you'd be willing to share. Particularly any
pointers for someone who will rarely have someone else willing to lay track. And
what would you recommend for equipment?

Hi Alisa, welcome to the world of PWDs. I can warn you that your "additional"
breed will be a Lowchen. Look forward to hearing from you. Be patient, a new
list doesn't jump at once.....it takes participation and time. Hopefully, as we
go along some "experts" will join us with help on training issues..........Try
the book CLICKER TRAINING FOR DOGS by Morgin Spector-great book.jann

Hello everyone, don't want to nag but take the time to introduce yourselves,
dogs, etc. What is it you are hoping to gain from this list?

I will introduce myself.........I am Jann Nienhaus, mother of 3 boys, two
cats, one ferret, one parrot , 3 PWDs, Buoy, Belle and Bravo and a Lowchen
puppy called Layla. Buoy, Polliwog Seafever's Mutiny, was purchased as a
show prospect but was neutered for a bad bite. He is the son of Diego and
CH.Polliwog's Talley Ho. Belle is from Driftwood Kennel (CH Driftwood's
Black Dahlia) and reminds me very much of her grandmother Morgin. Ask
Morgin what the term getting "Belled" means... She is retired and working on
her dance card at the moment. Suitable young gentlemen may call on
her......... Bravo, our brown boy, is out with a handler, he is from
Ferncliff Kennel, name CH Ferncliff Nautical By Nature. Morgin's Batman was
the stud dog and Morgin as well as the breeder is his co-owner. Wonderful
boy. Layla is from Ashford Kennel and has no formal name yet. She is 10
weeks old.

With Bravo out I am concentrating on obedience, then agility with a little
water stuff thrown in for fun, I need alot of advice. I am using clicker
training.

Robyn, feel free to elaborate more if you wish.......

I will send the first photo to the list of Layla co-owned with Morgin
Quirin. I just can't get away from her..........(Morgin that is!)

I may or may not be off to a show this weekend. If I am , you guys be nice.
Remember this is a forum of friends(I hope we will all be) where we can
share our victories, embarrassments and a few tears. I am supposed to show
staffbull puppies. Believe me, after Belle, people realize I am the perfect
candidate to be publically humiliated and they do
call.................Everyone have a great weekend,,,,,,,,,,,,,jann

Hello everyone and welcome. We are about 10 strong tonight with 3 or more
pending. I will not discourage anyone from joining but hopefully the number
will stay somewhat small. Who knows? The primary focus of this list is to
learn and have fun........There are some old-timers already on this list
which means you will have your brains picked on a regular basis for
suggestions to training problems. Again, feel free to discuss anything
relevant to the list and please let us know what your dogs are doing out
there.............brags and pictures please.............jann
