Hey Alex, Welcome back!

Missed you, Teresa and Boo at the Park!  I think Thunder has really missed Boo, he was playing with a dog named Guinness that looks like Boo only she had more black on her than Boo does.  I still have your towel, hopefully I'll see you one day this week at the park and get it back to you.  Thunder has healed fine, he is a bit skiddish around some of the more aggressive dogs now but a least now he knows to walk away before it gets out of hand.  As for my hand, it's healing fine.  I saw Chloe and Jake's mom (I'm not sure of her name) yesterday at the park, she said she had heard about the attack and had been worried about me and Thunder.  Hope you had a good holiday!

See you soon!

Hey Jennifer!

Man, Dar looks a lot like Thunder! When were you up at Masterson Sunday? Thunder
and I were there at about 4:30. It looks as if it wasn't very crowded at the time.
When we came up there was a big crowd! I cracked up this morning, Thunder put his
front paws on the bathroom vanity and saw himself in the mirror and he started
wooing and woofing at himself then he started to smack his paws on the vanity! I
darn near wet myself laughing at him!

Hope you and Dar had a good Christmas!

I think asphalt is too much there also. I think Parks gave us an estimate for gravel, but I'll have to check.

Jacobson has parking spaces, although since the expansion, people have been parking at the top of the hill in the grass. I've not been there in a while, and when I was, I used the parking spaces and did not notice how the other enterance was looking. We really want to lock the gate at the top of the hill. Several people do not like having two entrances, thinking it's enough to keep your eye on one entrance. Where a lot of dogs meet new dogs at the fence, not all owners think about opening only one gate at a time, and some get out.

I'll check to see what we can do. Maybe Lowes or Home Depot would donate some gravel to spread around, or at least give us a cut in the price. We'll see.

It's good we all have the same ideas about what we need and want at the dog parks! We're working on it! I don't want to sound like a campaign...but EVERY DOLLAR HELPS! :) Look for information on a membership meeting, I believe it's schedule for April, and we'll be there to vote in officers. We're always open to new and fresh faces on the steering committee.

Take care, and have a great Holiday!

There are some woodchips on the inside but only about 5 feet inside.  There is
definitely a need for some more inside and maybe some more running along the fence
outside in both directions from the gate to act as a sidewalk of sorts.

I think asphalt is overkill though it would be a more permanent fix.  I'm surprised
that they are asking $10-15k for 15 spaces.  I can see that for asphalt but not
just pouring some gravel and packing it.  I havent' been to Jacobson during this
wet weather, but does parking there get as muddy as Masterson has become in only 5
months of being used?  I think Masterson is a problem because the low grade of the
area.

foot radius around the gate.  Also, outside the park is getting really bad where all
the cars park.  It's great that you get the mud off while walking across the wood
chips, but then you hit the mud in the parking.  really they need to put gravel down
in front of the fence, but if all they have is wood chips, that would help.
another "regular" told me she met the guy who is "responsible" for the dog park and
he said his boss is really overwhelmed how much the park is being used.  they are a
little shocked how fast the bags are getting used.  at least someone broiught
grocery bags to help supplement.

Just an idea. :) I know there are always a wealth of ideas and

I did see that they put up a sign saying "Dog Park", which I thought

someone will yell at me if I'm not supposed to be in there. :)

Hi All,

Just thought I would introduce myself to the group. I dont really
know any of you personally, but we have been out to Masterson about 5
times now and we are really enjoying all the space and the trees. My
dog is D'Artagnon, siberian husky/alaskan malamute mix, he is 1 year
and 11 months old, and loves to go to the dog park. We mostly go out
on weekends because we live in Lawrenceburg, so it is a bit of a
drive for us.

I am sorry to hear about the recent aggressive activity. Luckily we
havent been present for any such aggressiveness at Masterson.
Sometimes dogs just dont like each other.

I know that everyone might not agree with this method, but I have
found that spraying a dog in the mouth with vinegar will usually back
them off from a fight. I carry it when I am walking Dar as well as
when I am at the dogpark. It doesnt hurt the dogs, just leaves a
horrible taste in their mouths and I have seen it break up some
pretty serious scuffles, plus you dont have to get close to the
fighting dogs. Just a thought. And for reassurance... I would never
ever spray someone else's dog unless my dog was directly involved and
it was obvious they were in a blood fight. I know how it feels to be
bitten by your own dog while it is in the heat of battle and scared,
and it isnt fun, physically or emotionally. I feel like it is a
pretty good alternative to not going to the park or feeling
defenseless if your dog gets attacked or if your dog happens to be
the aggressor one day.

lol...now that I have probably scared everyone off...Does anyone use
the calendar to schedule when they are going to be out at the park?

Hope to see you at the park!

Jennifer

Alex,

I don't have a clue as to what is going on lately. I don't know if it is new
dogs
that are causing the problem or not. Well, added insult to injury so to speak
12/16. My husband Jay had to take me to the ER, I have a sever enough case of
the
flu that I required fluids and medication for nausia (sp?). Thunder is doing
fine,
I think he misses Boo though. I don't think she is putting off any hormones
since
male dogs are also getting attacked by other male dogs. I don't even recall
Lucky
paying much attention to Boo that night when he attacked Thunder. I think
Thunder
will be fine to come back up to the park, I am a bit skiddish though. Hasn't
Cleo
been attacked before? I thought she was the one who had stitches in her ear
once.
Then we had poor Tanner's mauling a few months back. Who can we talk with about
this problem? I think it is starting to get a bit out of hand.
I hate to suggest it but maybe a log needs to be kept on attack reports. The
dog's
name and owner's name and number of attacks. After a dog has caused a certain
number of attacks that person is asked not to bring the dog back or is issued a
fine
of some type. We need to nip this in the bud now before one of the dogs gets
severly hurt or worse. Sorry for rattling on, thanks for listening though!

Thanks Alex, I think I know who Boo is, I will look next time. I have
been trying to avoid the muddy mess, not just to stay away from mud, but
to keep from helping to make more of it, I figure the more use I give
the park when it's wet out, the more I help mess it up.

I look forward to meeting you and Boo, and I was sorry to hear of the
recent escalation incidents with fighting. Hopefully this trend if
increased aggression you have noticed "takes a hike". I am new to this
park so I can't say that I have witnessed it, or any real fights, I have
only been to Masterson 5 times, and that all was over the last 3
weekends.

Take care,
Sean

Mary,
Thanks for the note. Glad to hear you are doing okay. Sorry Thunder is in
lockdown. I hope he doesn't drive you too nuts. I don't know what it is, but
there
have been a lot of dog fights at the park this week. Cleo almost got into it
with a
dog twice Thursday. Patti was able to stop Cleo both times before it got ugly.
Then Thunder's incident on Friday. Sunday we had Boo at the park twice and both
times she got attacked. She's okay, but a little freaked I think. I'm not sure
if
it is the weather, the snow, something in the park, or what. For Boo, both
times it
was a female attacking her, so maybe Boo is putting off some hormones. She's
spayed
though. Anyone have any ideas or similar experiences lately?

Alex

Hey gang,

I wanted to say thanks to Alex and his wife (Boo's parents) for
all the help when Thunder was attacked Friday night. Everybody was
great at helping to get Lucky off Thunder, I truely appreciate it. I
am happy to say Thunder only has a scratch on his ear from the
attack. I did end up at the doctor on Saturday to have my hand
looked at. The bites are pretty ugly and four out of five of my
fingers are wrapped but no stitches were required. Alex, thanks for
the towel, I will get it washed and returned to you as soon as I
can. The bad thing for Thunder is he will be quaranteened at home
for 2 weeks. The doctors and Health Dept. understand that he bit me
out of fear but they are required to do this by law.
I hope everyone has a great holiday, it will most likey be after
the first of the year when we get to come back up to the park. Again
I want to thank everyone, we may only see each other and talk when
the dogs play but I do think we are a close group who look out for
each other and each other's dogs.

Happy Holidays!

Very cute! I don't think I've seen you out there, but my wife must have
been out with Boo cause her feet in one of your pictures. The one with
Chloe trying to hide with the black dogs, there are little white socked feet
behind a big black dog. Those are Boo's feet! Hope to see you out there
soon. This afternoon at the park was great when the snow stopped.

Hi,

Hi I have been taking Chloe out to Masterson Station since she is now
close to 6 months and needs to get into the bustle. She has not had the
best shot at being a brave and sociable Akita because when I got her
she was sick, and ended up needing a major surgery. She was probably
traumatized by the
experience and she missed out on some socialization time so she needs
extra attention and care in this area. She's a real 'fraidy cat outside
the house.

At the top of the linked page there are some recent pictures of her on
Park Day 5 last weekend, this weekend looks to be a little to nasty to
make our 6th trip.

http://members.iglou.com/formviz/chloe

Hope you enjoy seeing her, she certainly is making my holiday season
more fun and cheery.

I spent a lot of time reseraching this and I figured it
might be useful to put into your archives.

From Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky
Home of the University Of Kentucky

Lexington opened a second dogpark in September.
It sounds like this used to be an unofficial
off-leash area that they have now fenced off
and made legal.

I noticed a May 2002 article said this park
was "to be revised" back then and the city was going
to match ALL funds raised for the dogpark

And later in the recent Sept 2003 article it says
the city is planning to open at least 2 more dogparks.

romping room
Lexington's dogs now have a second park to play in
By Art Jester
HERALD-LEADER STAFF WRITER

There are some people who walk their dogs on leashes, as city law
requires, but they really like to let their dogs run free.

In Lexington, many of these people are called the Friends of the Dog
Park.

And it may be time to add an "s" to the last word in their name.

When a new fenced dog park is dedicated today at Masterson Station
Park on Lees-town Road, it will be Lexington's second place where
owners can unleash their dogs and let them roam.

If the dogs want to thank somebody, they can bark their approval to
the 300-member Friends of the Dog Park. But they should add a bark
for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, too.

Janet Cowen, a member of Friends of the Dog Park, views today's
opening as another victory for the owners as well as man's best
friend.

"One of the reasons we, as dog owners, deserve some park space is we
want a place to let our dogs run," she said. "Dogs need exercise,
too."

At the dog park, the only requirements are that owners keep the dogs
on leashes as they enter and leave, and that they clean up after
their dogs by using pooper scoopers, bags and a receptacle.

Cowen said Friends of the Dog Park definitely support the city's
leash law. In the interest of safety, the law requires owners to keep
their dogs on leashes when they're outside a house or a fenced-in yard

Creating the new Masterson Station dog park used $12,000 of the
$19,000 the Friends of the Dog Park raised since the organization was
created in 2000.

"At the time, there was one fenced-in off-leash park at Jacobson
Park, and it was less than 1 acre," Cowen said.

Last spring, Jacobson Park inaugurated an expanded, 3-acre dog park
that is surrounded by chain-link fence.

Masterson Station's dog park is more stylish.

The new 6-acre dog park is enclosed by black horse-farm fences with
mesh backing to prevent the dogs from escaping through the fence
rails, said Bill Carman, deputy director of the city's Parks &
Recreation Department.

Previously, Masterson Station's dog park wasn't fenced, and it sat
alongside Leestown Road, where traffic posed a big hazard.

Carman said the upgraded dog parks have come about since the Friends
of the Dog Park approached then-Mayor Pam Miller with the idea.

Miller appointed a committee that returned with some recommendations.
One called for the city to provide $25,000 for the effort, to be
matched dollar-for-dollar by the Friends of the Dog Park.

Carman said the city is now looking at adding fenced dog parks at
Coldstream Park, which sits by the intersection of I-75 and Newtown
Pike; and Wellington Park, which is on the old Reynolds Tobacco
property at Clays Mill Road and Wellington Way.

Cowen said Veterans Park on Tates Creek Road is another promising
site for a fenced dog park.

In the meantime, Cowen said, the Friends of the Dog Park would like
to enhance the Masterson Station dog park when more money is
available. There are an additional 10 acres that can be used to
accommodate an agility course and an area for smaller dogs so they
don't get overrun by their bigger brethren.

The Friends would also like to run a water line for the dogs and
provide benches for the owners, she said.

At Jacobson Park, the Friends would like to add water and trees, she
said.

Dog Gone Good Idea
Jehan Valiente E-mail the author: jehan@ chevychaser.com
Canine caregivers and their pups crave one particular treat in
Lexington:
the desire to roam free, the liberty to unite while running
unhindered
by city officials snarling, "No roaming without a leash, capice!"

Many dog owners do not consider Lexington a dog-friendly city.
Lexington
law requires dog owners to leash their pooches in public areas or
bark
up $60 or more.

Jeremy Divine recently took his one-year-old golden retriever to
Kirklevington Park to do some festive frolicking. Respectful of
other park-goers, Divine walked Chase on a leash to the expansive
soccer field before letting him run free. Then the man in the
uniform started walking his way.

"I was nervous," Divine said. "I didn't know what he was going to do.
He approached me and greeted the dog, but then he gave me a warning
about having Chase off the leash. He said if I wanted to have the
dog off the leash I would need to go to Masterson Station."

Divine lives only a few blocks from Kirklevington Park and often uses
the park's facilities and lets his growing dog get exercise there.
He said it would be better for him and Chase if all the parks had
some dog-friendly sections so owners wouldn't have to feel guilty
and dogs could stay healthy.

Several local dog lovers, calling themselves Friends of the Dog Park,
have refused to accept the oxymoron of leashing a dog in an open area
and decided to do something about it. Dogs and dog owners alike are
howling it's time to break that canine chain!

For almost two years, dog devotees and their pooches have been
sniffing out practical places to play without punishment. Among
these determined devotees are Co-presidents of Friends of the
Dog Park Jon Bain and Pat Cooper and Councilwoman Linda Gordon.
Gracias to the gracious efforts of Friends of the Dog Park committee
for bringing Lexington up to speed with the other 500 pooch parks
around the United States.

Both owner and dog get tired of being confined to a leash while at
play. This project presents dog owners with guaranteed locales to
unleash, unwind and unite in a dwelling designated for canine
carousal.
The project will enable owner and dog to socialize, exercise and
play without being tangled and tied by a leash. Akin to several
park areas reserved for human activities/sports, a designated area
for dog sportsmanship is also deserved for community canines and
owners.
These areas will give dog owners space needed to train their pup,
exchange tips and consult with other dog owners.

This favorable pooch project was first introduced in May 2000,
with a mere 3,000 petitioning signatures presented to the parks
advisory board. Point by point, information was presented relative
to the design, safety and health measures, as well as the locality
of these neighborly dog parks. The parks advisory board assembled
a committee, and after meeting for six months the project was
submitted and accepted. Since then this proposal has manifest
into one of the most promising achievements for dogs and
their owners within Lexington.

Now all they need is some canine cash to get this pooch party
started.
Some money has been raised already, but more support is needed from
the community to complete this priceless project. Matching funds
are currently contributed by the urban county council but will cease
to exist on July 1 of this summer. The more pooch pennies raised now,
the faster this project will woof forward.

At the moment, Lexington-Fayette County has more than 4,200 acres of
parkland, and only .005 percent is intended for off-leash fun and
games. Jacobson Park claims one fenced-in acre, but this one-acre
alone does
not provide room for the 47,000 dogs registered in Lexington.

Essentially, the desired objective for the dog park plan is to
designate
five enclosed areas within the boundaries of local parks. So far,
the areas donated for these fenced-in canine courtyards include an
expansion of the current one-acre at Jacobson Park to three tree-
lined
acres, the development of a six-acre zone in Coldstream Park,
a revision of the dog run area in Masterson Station Park,
a 5.5 acre site at the new Wellington Park and a dog facility
somewhere along Tates Creek Road (still under negotiation).
Like other recreational areas in parks, rules and regulations
will be posted and enforced by the Division of Parks and Recreation.
The Division of Animal Control will administer the facilities.

With the help of the Lexington community these outlined areas will
be on the road to reality before too long. What can you do to help
bring these dog parks into a happy existence? Foremost, more money
needs to be raised and very soon. Friends of the Dog Park has tried
different fundraisers, including a showing of Cats and Dogs at the
Kentucky Theatre and a silent auction featuring canine-themed
merchandise,
but it still relies heavily on the generosity of private residents
who want to give dogs the freedom nature intended them to have.

If you would like to contribute to the efforts of Friends of the
Dog Park, send your donation to P.O. Box 22834, Lexington, Ky.,
40522.
The city has designated $25,000 in matching funds, so every dollar
you donate becomes two.

I hope someone from Friends of the Dog Park is reading this.  This is in reference to general advertising for all your activities.  I didn't find out about the Halloween gathering until the day the email came out.  In talking to most of the people that frequent the Masterson Dog Park, no one knew about it.  In fact, most commented that they didn't know about any of the Friends of the Dog Park activities until after they happened. ie Dog Paddle, Masterson Dedication, Jacobson Halloween...  How about putting up some more advertising?  It shouldn't be too hard to print some flyers to hang at Masterson.  Put them in a plastic sleeve for protection from the elements.  It wouldn't be that expensive.  Talk to some of the big vets, kennels, day cares, etc.  I'm sure they would put flyers up or out for people to pick up.  How about Petsmart and Incredipet?  I bet they would even help make copies of the flyers!  If the Friends of the Dog Park wants to get more noticed it needs to do more active advertising rather than rely on the newspaper and TV spots that highlight the events after the fact.  Since I hate it when people make suggestions and don't offer to help, sign me up for helping with advertising.  I'd be willing to hang flyers at Masterson.  If need be, I'll drive across town to hang them at Jacobson too.  I'll even talk to dog related businesses if no one else will.

Also, on the note of advertising, I'd like to present the idea of a weather protected bulletin board for both dog parks.  This can be used to post Friends of the Dog Park info, lost pets, pets for adoption, etc.  If permission is granted, I will design and build them and even pay for the materials myself(or raise some dough from friends at the park) if Friends of the Dog Park can't pay for them.  I recommend three boards.  One for each entrance to Jacobson and one for Masterson.

Please let me know about both topics.

Sincerely,
Alex Geyling

Hello,

My name is Merinda & I'm on the Friends of the Dog Park Steering Committee.
I'm also the one who answers all the emails sent to the website.

I apologize for my delay in responding... We were alerted to holes in the
fence initially by someone through the website. We notified Parks & those
holes were fixed.

More holes were brought to my attention a few weeks ago by Alex (thank
you!). I had mentioned it to Parks, but I will do so again. They obviously
have not been fixed.

This is the wonderful description Alex sent me detailing where the holes
are:

"Along the back fence(chain link), there are some spots that I think smaller
dogs could squeeze through. The best I can describe it is looking at the
fence, go to the 3rd pole from the left and then go 8 fence panels to the
right. There is a hole that has been patched with some wire, but it isn't
doing the job. Then 2nd pole from the right, 3rd and 4th panels to left of
the pole, the chain link is pulled away from the posts."

Do these appear to be the same holes?

I will remind Parks again today about fixing the holes.

Thank you!
Merinda

Hi Alex,

Yes, those are the same holes. Someone said they had been there a
long time. While I was there two dogs ran through and had to be
caught. Thank goodness they weren't mine. If mine don't want to be
caught they won't be. I think that if the park won't fix them some
of us will have to.

Hello all,

Not eager to be the first to post a message, but I was out at the dog
park earlier this week and was warned that there were two holes in
the fence there. Does anyone know the status of those holes?
