Please see Ashley's time sensitive email below about PHS rescued mice who need to be placed soon or they will be euthanized. If your shelter/rescue group does not have room, do you know of anyone else I might email? Thank you, Debra Mendelsohn
I'm writing in the hopes that you can help me spread the word and perhaps get these mice some homes...
A pet store was busted in San Mateo and the Peninsula Humane Society took in many of the animals.
Rattie Ratz is taking in all the rats (13 total, 4 boys, 1 mom with 8 babies).
But there are mice that RR is not taking in, and I'm trying to give them a fighting chance at getting homes too, or foster homes.
There are:
Females -
9 white females
1 brown female
1 white female with 11 babies
Males -
10 white males
If you know someone who is a mouse person, PLEASE contact anyone you know who might be able to help!
I appreciate this SO much - I just want to do everything I can to try and find these mice some homes.
If anyone you know lives around Sacramento and wants to adopt/foster some, I am willing to take the mice and meet with that person. I've posted to all the groups I know and am trying my hardest.
Linda B. from Crafty Rat is picking up the rats on Friday.
This is TIME SENSITIVE - if these mice don't find homes/foster homes soon, they will probably be destroyed.
It is a bit difficult posting about rats needing homes while I am desperately trying to place as many of the Petaluma rats as possible but the Dublin shelter also needs assistance at this time. They are inundated especially with rabbits, 7 rats and a guinea pig and they need to find homes for the rats and other animals ASAP. They are a small shelter and are out of room. Another House Rabbit Society member who is already full is working on the rabbit situation but the situation with an overflow of rabbits at most shelters and rescue groups is just as desperate as it is with rats unfortunately.
If you are in the East bay and can take one or more of these rats listed below, please first phone the shelter (925) 803-7040 and inquire about the one(s) you are interested in to see if they are still up for adoption:
* 1 silver/blue young adult who is very sweet
* 1 white young adult rat who is sweet
* 1 young adult white and gray rat who I believe is fairly friendly
* 2 young hooded rats who are a little shy but should come around quickly given their young age
* 1 older hooded rat who is a nipper
* 1 aggressive/bitting hairless rat
Please also inquire if you are interested in rabbits as well! For more info on the care of rabbits please see the following websites:
Our home would not be complete without both rats and rabbits. They don't get along together unfortunately but I can have a rat(s) on my shoulder and lap and still reach down to pet the bunny at my feet.
Jennifer at the Dublin shelter is most knowledgeable about the rats but if she is not at the shelter when you phone, you may speak with anyone.
Thank you!

I am looking forward to picking up approximately 50 rats from the Petaluma shelter tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon! I purchased lots of soft thick fleece for the ratties to sit on in their roomy carriers along with some lightweight cotton fleece for them to snuggle in during their long trek. I purchased 4 new carriers at PetClub (they don't sell animals, only supplies) and they agreed to donate the 5th one. I picked up porcelain dishes for food and water and they should be heavy enough to avoid tipping over. All carriers have been washed and both types of fleece have been laundered and cut in enough pieces so that they can periodically be changed along the way.
I have 5 small bottles of water in the freezer (just in case there are any problems with the air-conditioning) and I have 3 bottles of water in the fridge for Alicia and the ratties to drink. I made my vitamin/mineral rich rat mix last night (which we drivers can snack on as well) and I will bring along a jar full of Oxbow Regal Rat Blocks.
I am including some cardboard nesting boxes, tape and a pair of scissors just in case.
I have a full tank of gas and I believe everything is set but if anyone has any other recommendations please let me know.
After I pick up the ratties from the Petaluma shelter, I will drive up to Dunnigan (northern Calif. near Winters) and Alicia (bless her heart!!!) expects to meet me there around 6 pm. I will hand her approx. 50 very luck ratties on their way to new homes and new lives!
Many thanks to Alicia for driving such a long distance! Many thanks also to Susan of the Small Animal Rescue Society of BC who is coordinating the placement of rats in Canada and to Simone who is the rat coordinator at SARS BC. Many thanks also to Velvet who is coordinating Washington and Oregon placement along with Alicia. Also thank you to Danelle and her son, who in spite of Danelle's back injury was still willing to drive the distance to pick up the Petaluma ratties.
I will try to send a quick email after I return home Saturday night.

Poor Danelle who was scheduled to transport the Petaluma rats to Portland, Oregon this Saturday, July 8th has suffered a fall and injured her back.
Would anyone be able to drive part (or all!) of the way from Petaluma, California to Portland Oregon this Saturday? Susan has graciously offered to help with money for fuel. There are wonderful homes and foster homes anxiously awaiting the arrivals of the Petaluma rats so any assistance in driving a leg of this trip would bemostappreciated!

Linda of the Crafty Rat and Moderator of The Rat Fan Club group ( theratfanclub@yahoogroups.com ) has graciously offered to assist with transportation for people in the Sacramento area who are interested in adopting some of the rescued Petaluma rats! If you live in the Sacramento area and are interested in adopting but need assistance with transporting them, please contact Linda at linda@... for assistance with transportation. After you correspond with Linda, please also contact Nancee Tavares at the City of Petaluma Animal Shelter (707) 778-4396 to arrange for adoption. Please tell Nancee which day Linda will be picking up your rats. There is a $5 fee per rattie and the shelter is limiting the number of rats to 4 per person. Some adoption information has changed since my last post. The males will be available after Tuesday, June 27th and some of the females will be spayed next week and available starting July 3rd. I'm sure you can understand that with such a massive undertaking, procedures and rules are evolving and changing on a regular basis so before going to the Petaluma shelter, please verify your intention with the shelter first.

In case you or anyone you know might be able to help:
A Sonoma County shelter has rescued a few hundred rats from a hoarder. I can assist with transportation by picking up and transporting as far south as San Francisco and as far east as Berkeley. If you or anyone you know can adopt please phone Nancee at the Petaluma shelter (707) 778-4396 before 5 pm Saturday 6/24. The shelter is open Saturday 11 am to 5 pm. The rats need to be picked up by Monday, 6/25 but first need to be put on hold by Saturday if you are able to adopt. I would be available to help transport this Saturday and/or Sunday. You can reach me at (415) 516-6928. While the adults are shy, there are reportedly many friendly babies and young rats. They include grays, blues, beige and white, brown and white. If anyone visits these rats, would you please let me know if there is any further information I might be able to post about them.

This family wrote to me today and I told them I would put their request out in case anyone can help them. Here is the email:
>> Hi Debra,
Here's the info about our rats. Here's my cell phone number to contact me more directly or at eagles8528@... (707) 803-9844. (Vacaville, Calif)
My husband is in the military and we are moving overseas and we are moving out of our apartment by close of business on Monday 15 May and need to find new homes. We have tried various internet rescue sites and posting fliers at the local pet store, SPCA and the rats vet office. Their names are "Croc", "Dragonbait" and "Snowcone". We have had Croc and Dragonbait since we purchased them at Petco two years ago. We have had Snowcone a year.
"Croc" aka "Fat rat" is a Jumbo sized 2 year old dove(cream or silver) colored red eyed hooded male rat. The silver colored stripe extends 3/4 of the way down his back Croc is a big rat, pictures don't do him justice. He was named because when he was younger he had an ear infection that threw him off balance, whenever we would go to pick him up he would go into a as (Steve "Croc Hunter" Irwin) Crocidile Death roll where all he would do was twist in a log roll, hense the name "Croc" though his temperment is the exact opposite of what you would think He has recently had two tumors removed. He seems to be doing well, but does sneeze more since the surgery. Croc is an absolute sweetheart around people, you show him attention and he will lick you to death, never bites. He is my lap rat, I hold him in my arms, when he was younger I could stroke his ears and nearly put him to sleep. He loves to be petted but of course he does have his squirmy times where all he wants to do is explore. He seemed so easy going that originally we got "Snowcone" to be a companion, but unfortunately Croc still bit Snowcone upon meeting, So we were forced to keep them in separate cages. To say Croc loves food is an understatement, he goes crazy by climbing the walls when he knows food is coming. Croc is the only one with a wheel in his cage he does enjoy running most nights and chewing on his puzzle and tree stump.
"Dragonbait" is a large 2 year old large black hooded male rat with the black stripe continuing down to the base of his tail with one white spot near the just before the base of his tail. Dragon was named after a character in one of my husband's Dungeons and Dragons novels. Dragon is our wise guy. We call him "Naughty" because he's got an attitude and has escaped from his cage a couple of times amongst other reasons, very intelligent and spunky, though he has softened with age, he does nip at times. This is the rat in our house that I will not stick my finger in his cage for fear he might bite it, though my husband does all the time and just about has Dragon trim his fingernails. Dragon loves to sit on our shoulders, that seems to be the place he is happiest, though he doesnt mind being held and petted and of course he's always curious about his surroundings. Dragon likes to climb into the couch when we're not looking so we have to ferret him out periodically. We kept the couch and loveseat close together in the living room and Dragon is the only one who will size up the distance and take a flying leap from the arm of the love seat to the arm of the couch about a foot away. We originally got Dragon and Croc at Petco together when they were little, we tried to keep them together but it seemed as they got older Croc tried to throw his weight around and Dragon taught him a leason about who was dominant. They seemed to fight so we separated them. We presently have Dragon in a large birdcage with wooden pedistals near the top of the cage where he like to check things out and say hello this also gives him the opportunity to explore and get some exercise. Dragon is smart enough that the puzzle that he is suppose to chew to get to the almond in the center, he hasn't touched the wood but the almond is nearly exposed. Dragon knows when he is at the Vet and squeeks unhappily while there. Dragon loves shredding his cardboard tubes and other things if you leave them near his cage... On of my backpacks was near his cage, he pulled the strap into his cage and chewed it apart.
"Snowcone" is our medium to large sized 1 year old pink eyed white male. He is our "scared rat", he is timid and sensitive to noises, he hears us coming from across the room and never seems to sleep, always attentive. "Snowcone" is named like the frozen treat(like shaved ice), lots of red color on the bottom and it turns from red to pink to white at the top as you eat it. Snowy seems to be not so trusting and it take some time, he still sometimes does not take food from our hands, though when he does take food out of our hands it seems to be when he feels safest, like in his cage. "Snowcone" is a rescue from Petco, we went in looking for a companion for Croc and met someone who was brining Snowy back to the pet store because he had been purchased for snakefood but the snake didn't eat Snowy. Snowy was in the cage for a week or two and soon got to big for the snake to eat. Snowy is curieous and is always sniffing everything, he rarely bits, but that is usually due to food in my hands. He enjoys being petted and exploring, he does startle when a loud noise occurs, even something like winding a camera, the clicking will startle him. Snowy somehow always pushes his house down the ramp to the next level and will sit and sleep in the house while it is at an angle or upside down or any way it sems to be. There are 3 young black and white (neutered!) male rats caged together at a San Francisco Bay Area, California shelter who need to find home(s) by this Sunday, March 19th. The staff can pet them and pick them up and although they are a little shy and tend to run away when someone starts to pick them up, they have never bitten any staff members. They are reportedly fairly young and I suspect they will not stay shy for long since apparently they already enjoy being pet -- just not yet used to being picked up. If you can help one or more of they guys, please write to me ASAP for more information.
For those of you who remember the 4 baby rats I was looking for homes for, I am very grateful to Nancy for adopting all four of them before their time ran out!

>>Rats - there are a dozen of them. A large rattie has a tumor and is very listless. There is a cage of several youngsters who are very active and playful with each other. There is an adult couple. Lastly, there is a bachelorette/bachelor.
Hamsters - There are 20 dwarf hammies surendered by their owner. They are all different ages and families - lots of babies! They are very playful and extremely cute!
Guineas - There are maybe a dozen guineas right now. They are very adorable and are so loud when I bring in veggies! I am sad for the one with an injured leg who needs a home right away.

Does anyone in Northern California have room for 1 to 4 young female rats? These rats are at a Bay Area shelter and need to find homes by this Saturday, 2/18. They are black and white and although they can be handled, they will need a little extra socializing. Given their young age, they will likely come around quickly. If you or someone you know can adopt any of these ratties, please phone me at (415) 516-6928 ASAP.

Oh - I'm so glad to hear they are turning into bouncy babies! That
soy baby formula is very tempting to them and great for mixing with
all manner of stuff. I've even mixed Green Mush in with it, and
they like that, too. Now you've got new healthy babies -
congratulations! I'm glad the "extra pets" or "livestock" went
away, too. Ug. What lucky ratties!

If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area and are able to adopt a baby rat or 2 please let me know ASAP. A local humane society that was already filled with rabbits and other small animals recently received 10 sweet baby rats.
The females are a little shy but especially given their young age, they should become very social within a few days of handling. The boys are fairly social and very playful. After only my second visit, both the male and female babies were already starting to crawl up my arm. I am providing them with my homemade organic rat mix and today I will take some salmon to them.
There are agouti and white hooded, blond/brown and white hooded as well as black and white hooded.
Please contact me ASAP if you can adopt one or more. I may be able to help with transportation.
Thanks!

I know what you mean. I felt bad for leaving the tiny ones and taking a pudgy healthy one. This new one absolutely loves me though. He had been looking at me before the pet shop owner picked him up. There were some older ratties there too. I just feel so bad for them all. I had no intention of even getting another one but I had forgotten a shelf I purchased and had to go back. When little Scooter peed in my hand it was all over. He marked me as his property!
Albert sure still looks pretty good. How long have you had him and how long has he had no back legs? sue

Well - hooray Albert! I wish my little Menlo girl, Sophie, were still with me. I loved her like crazy and she was kissy and cuddly. I use green mush, too, regularly. I hope it is as helpful to my bunch now as it seems to be for Albert. Give him a birthday kiss! Laura

I'm so glad you took him home. I wish I could take them all home.
I hope you enjoy these babies for a long time!

Despite his crippled state, he's doing well and turns 2.10 today,
which I never thought he'd ever get close to. I put up a few pictures

Albert is a regular Green Mush eater and I'm sure that's helped him a
lot, which is a great endorsement for Green Mush!
Thanks so much for the info! I will do some reading. I always use ivermectin topically. I went back to the pet shop today and talked with the owner. She had a lot of rats this time including some more tiny babies. She said that the rats come from different sources and you could easily see the difference between them. Fat and healthy appropriate aged ones versus thin, scraggly tiny ones. She said that a young boy raises some and sells them to her and that his mother works for a vet. I am assuming she meant the tiny ones. I told her she needs to speak to him and to contact a vet to get rid of the lice. When she asked me to show her the lice she put a sweet healthy one in my hands. While I was checking him he was bruxing and started cleaning me, then he peed in my hand. He never made it back in with the rest of the ratties. He came home with me..........Oh well. Nancy
