Thanks so much for your input! I would hope that if one had the Ober breed character already, that breeding back to a purebred Nigerian buck would only be for a size adjustment . . .?
What you told me about the generational is what I thought, i.e., you might move backward to achieve your desired height goal, with considerations to the doe's abilities.
I am still concerned about the registry rules. Would this be allowed for registering the offspring?
Thank you so much for your reply, Lyne, and best of luck with your breeding goals!
Without looking up a rule book, I was told by a board member of TMGR that the offspring will be whatever is the lowest. So if you bred a Nigerian buck to an F6 doe, the offspring would be F1.
One other issue is that one rarely would see a need for breeding to a Nigerian for breed character. Since the mini is supposed to be just like the Oberhasli, we usually have a need for more dairy character. Just for the sake of discussion, the most wonderful part about the mini is the better udder attachments we can get from the Nigerian... I think. Oberhasli breeders will tell me that it is the lower volume that doesn't make the udder pendulous. We'll see!

Good morning,
I am new to breeding Mini Obers and have a question. I realize that in order to work on breed character that sometimes it is necessary to breed a purebred Nigerian buck to a generational doe. I see that the generation remains the same as the dam.
My question is this: Can one breed a generational buck to a purebred Nigerian doe and still register the offspring? No doubt the generation would not change, but would remain the same as the dam, but I was wondering what the registry rules are.
Also, I am aware that one would have to use common sense when doing this. The generations behind the part bred could be a factor with birthing issues. I am just wanting to know if it is "legal" within the registry to do this and have registered offspring.
Thanks for understanding the learning curve here.
