Re: [Minioberhasli] Novice question regarding breeding minis

Those big white splashes can sometimes happen in a purebred Oberhasli.   I saw 2 such does being shown as Recorded Grades, even tho they were infact many generations pure American Oberhasli.

Yes, it would be allowed.  In fact I have a buck that is 3/4 Nigerian and "registered" as F1.  He is a handsome fellow and I keep deciding I need to use him on certain does.  I just bought two polled Oberhasli to breed to him (rather than a straight Nigerian).  I am not in a hurry to get to F6 status.  I want to get the quality I want first, before I breed exclusively to minis.  The potential gene pool is huge, so I am reluctant to minimize my options by breeding exclusively towards mini only for six generations.  Anyway, it is OK to have minis that are not exactly 50%.  I guess you can figure after 6 generations of normal mini to mini breeding, you will be close enough to 50%.

I haven't had a size problem yet.  My F1s are within the standard.  I did obtain an F1 doe that was Oberhasli sized but she was a rescue and I couldn't get any information on her parents.  I really don't know why she was so big.  She did have big white splashes on her side, so I figure she really wasn't a purebred and probably was half Nigerian, but maybe not.

Lyne,

Thanks so much for your input! I would hope that if one had the Ober breed character already, that breeding back to a purebred Nigerian buck would only be for a size adjustment . . .?

What you told me about the generational is what I thought, i.e., you might move backward to achieve your desired height goal, with considerations to the doe's abilities.

I am still concerned about the registry rules. Would this be allowed for registering the offspring?

Thank you so much for your reply, Lyne, and best of luck with your breeding goals!

Without looking up a rule book, I was told by a board member of TMGR that the offspring will be whatever is the lowest.  So if you bred a Nigerian buck to an...

There is one other good reason to continue buying F1 minis from Oberhasli breeders that breed all their yearlings to a good Nigerian buck.  We get the best...

No matter what generation the one mini is, when you breed it back to a Nigerian the offspring would be 1 generation. You can't have a percentage mini out of a...
