Hi everyone,
I forgot to tell everyone that I probably wouldn't be online yesterday didn't I?  It was our 8th anniversary and we had some family time planned and didn't get home until late.  I am late tonight as this weekend is my daughter's birthday and we were picking up her present and a few supplies for her party.  I miss the days when a party at the park with a few friends and a homemade cake was wonderful.  lol  This year our oven is out and the park is too small.  Oh well bring on 18 kids...we can handle it. lol
Here is the list for tonight and yesterday.

Horse - Bashkir Curly - Free
Sweet Bashkir Curly Mare
My Wife and I rescued this mare last summer when her home in Northern CA was threatened by wildfires. We would like to find a wonderful, permanent home for Curly Sue. English or Western, she is steady under the saddle. We have had young children riding her (ages 6 - 11). We are uncertain of her exact age. Our vet is guessing mid-20's. Sweet girl, good teeth, good health, good hooves (barefoot). She lost an eye (we are told it was in a riding accident when she was young) and has adapted surprisingly well to her limited vision. She does better having another horse (or companion animal) around and loves attention from her humans. She would make a great "therapy" horse because she is living proof that you don't have to be perfect to be great!
Please call us and arrange a time to come meet her. She is free to a good home, although she is so sweet we should be charging.

1.  Mare is an 8 year haflinger-TWH cross. Very calm and sane. Stands nicely while being mounted and only goes faster than a walk under saddle when asked. Has a nice whoa. Gone out solo on trial ride on totally foreign trails during her first week. Only thing I can say negative is she could use a bit more owrk with reponding to leg cues, however we have started doing work and she catches on quickly. Went through water however hesitated since it was running fast due to recent rain we had. She follows you like a puppy dog and has not shown any marish tendencies yet. Nice calm when leading, fine in cross ties and with farrier. Right now she is barefoot - her shoes had been on her over 4 months per my farrier who pulled them on Friday - thus I wanted to give her a break and she seems to be doing fine .Very smooth running walk- does from walk right into it. No pacing at all.  Folks who may have an interest can contact me at dfkent@... (dfkent @ snet.net) of call me at 860-705-8456. She was on broker lot in PA and we pulled her and  brought her to our rescue here in CT. If I did not have too many horses (and not enough money)  Iwould keep her. She is short - maybe 14'2 but wide and I am 5 foot 10 and my daughter is 5 foot 9 and we boht have ridden her fine. here is link to you tube clip taken on her 3rd day here. She was  not use to our Imus gaited bit so she shook her head a little but the next two times we rode her she was fine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l40ndjTwuHA

I have a 19 yr old stallion that I took in as a rescue several months ago. He has had his coggins pulled, his winky cleaned, his hoofs done, and his teeth done. He is ready for his forever home. He is just in need of some more weight. He is a real sweety. Not sure if he is rideable due to his weight, we havent tried, but the four others that came in with him were. He would make a good babysitter or pasture buddy. If interested please call 727-326-7827 or use the above email. You can see him at www.ohanarescue.com along with others that we have.

1.  important news: fosters, Chunky, and other news

Posted by: "May S." mayleen@...   funchy_crunchy

Wed May 20, 2009 11:06 am (PDT)
Times are difficult for all of us. I wouldn't ask for your help, if it
wasn't so important.
Last night, due to an unexpected emergency situation, the woman who was
going to keep Chunky ("Move those Chains"), could not keep him. I got the
notice yesterday afternoon, so I cancelled my other plans and by 6pm I
picked him up. I have to admit right now I am feeling a bit overwhelmed.
A few months back, Maggie's foster had Equihab pick Maggie up with no
notice, so Maggie had nowhere else to go but here. I still am fostering
Gypsy, taken in when a nice local man lost his job and was about to lose his
home. This means I'm caring for 3 equihab horses plus the two
former-rescue horses of my own to care for. I love helping horses, but
Equihab can't succeed without YOUR help.
Equihab isn't just "me". Equihab is a community non-profit organization
which helps horse owners & horses in and around our local area. Equihab
relies on sponsors, foster home, adopters, and other supporters to
function.
The horses NEED YOU TODAY!
Fosters are needed to take on one horse for a few months. Who wouldn't want
a rideable horse to enjoy during this nice weather?
One or two responsible people are needed to organize Equihab events for
summer or fall. Without events we can't do education or fundraising.
A publicity volunteer is needed. We need help connecting homes with the
horses. I believe the right homes are out there for these horses -- we
just need to connect with those people.
Ongoing donations to offset the cost of caring for so many horses are also
needed. The horses need feed, spring shots, farrier, etc. Equihab's hay
supplier just informed us last night that we should expect the price of
round-bales to go up 10%+, starting with the first cutting.
Equihab would also love help with its web site, donated trims, donated vet
care, donated hay or supplies, etc.
A yard/tack sale was proposed to raise money, but we need a location & a few
helpers to hold it. Can you help?
A Board of Directors position is also vacant: looking for a responsible,
impartial adult who is able to give a few hours a month to Board meetings.
Contact us for more info.
Please contact me by phone, 443-466-4087, or by email, may@... (may @ equihab.com) if
you can be of any help. On behalf of the horses, thank you.
Sincerely,
May Snyder

1.  The NEER BIG Mr/MA can not stay at his 'forever' foster home any more... ):

17H, 2000 lbs, mostly dominant (even over mares) but has been getting along with donks and a couple of girlfriends of late.  He was used and abused by the Amish for years!  ):  20 something, but in great shape.  Likes nothing, but respects fencing.  NOT for a timid inexperienced person.  The BIG Mr knows that he is intimidating and uses it to his advantage, but he does have nice manners.  Drives, has the dents, scars and outfolded lips to prove it.  Did not like the whole 'riding' thing.  He would like a big field with a run in to stand in until his last breath.  Not bad with his feet, if you're feeding him, he is barefoot.  The BIG Mr is an easy keeper, needs to be on hay and/or hay stretcher ONLY, anything more gives him the trots (no pun). UTD/coggins, etc.

Presently in Groveland MA.

If you have the space and experience for a big standoffish draft, please let me know... fatoldfarmwife@... (fatoldfarmwife @ verizon.net)

No fee.

More info:

This boy is in need of a family. He is a big horse that thinks he is small. He has had a tough life and would prefer to be a baby sitter. He can be turned out with mares, donkeys, and doesn’t have any problems with dogs or cats. He is rather timid and needs to have owners who will care for him and not have caretakers.  He responds better to one or two handlers and not more. He has not been turned out with any geldings yet, but soon to be tried. His dream is to be loved, and his retirement wishes honored. No work, no saddle no bridle and no driving. Just let him keep your equines company. He is not a dominant horse, just a nervous boy. He forgets that he is as big as he is, he always keeps you with in his sights, but if scared he forgets how big he is.

Nebraska:

1.  Urgent update (3 Mar 2009):  I do have an update on my landlord's horses. I spoke with him today when he was out and it is not great news. He said that one way or another he will be down to 4 horses this spring. I am guessing that he is planning on taking the 2 mares and 2 colts to auction the next time it is local. I am not sure when that will be. Our area is pretty quiet on horse auctions and usually only holds two pretty large auctions a year...one in the spring and one in the fall. I haven't heard yet when the first one will be. I can't see him taking them too far out.  I mentioned that I might consider buying the one mare myself (as she is very attached to my mare) and he said that if I did, I would have to probably start paying him for hay.  I have been in contact with a rescue who might be able to take them, but I would have to fundraise the ransom and health certs, etc. for them...that was just for the 2 mares though. The two stud colts will be the hardest to place. The one is very sweet and handling well, but the other is still pretty shy and I have yet to get him haltered. sigh. He did mention that he was considering gelding at least Dusty.  Any help for these horses would be greatly appreciated!

I have listed my landlord’s twores on my website.  Please note that they have very limited handling.  I am reintroducing the halter and will work with them until a good home is found for them.  5 yr old bay roan mare.  Approximately 14.2 – 15H.  Beautiful face and very willing to please.  She is haltering nicely now and is beginning to take tentative steps forward when asked.  Not bad considering we are working in the pasture with all the other horses around!  Best offer.  My landlord also has an older bay roan mare.  This mare is very friendly likes people, is halter broke (she is a little nervous at first when you start to put the halter on, but once on she will do anything asked of her), and had a beautiful bay colt last year (she is open this year.)  She is not registered.  I am not for sure how old she is.  Best offer.  Update (11 Dec 2008):  My landlord has also added the two yearling colts to the list of horses for sale.  Denny is a buckskin roan.  He is still shy with strangers and is not halter broke at this time.  I have been working with him as he originally wouldn’t let anyone come within five feet of him.  He loves scratches and to be brushed, but he is still a little nervous with the halter touching him.  Dusty is the bay colt (recently gelded) out of Bella.  He is an absolute pocket pony and loves attention.  He halters well, but can still be a little stubborn about leading.  He allows fly masks and will pick up his feet if asked.  You can do anything with this boy!  He has potential to make someone a very nice gelding!  I have lots of pictures if anyone wants to see them!   Best offer.  Update: 13 Apr 2009:  These horses are still available.  They are now UTD with deworming, but not vaccs as my landlord doesn't believe in vaccinating horses that don't leave the property. I will try to get more pictures of them on the website soon.  Please email me for more info Missys.hope @ gmail.com (remove spaces)  Located in Nebraska.

North Carolina:

1.  Pictures of the horses can be seen on the ABR Forum:  http://forums.prospero.com/AlexBrown/messages?msg=36858.1

This is very difficult for me to do.  Due to a personal problem (divorce) the future of Double G Stable & Farms is in jeopardy.  Because the future is so very unclear for me right now I need to think of the horses first.  Because I don’t want there to be a last minute panic or wait too long and have the horses suffer I am asking for help now.  Please keep this about the horses. I ask that any personal questions you might have remain personal. Just e-mail me and I will do my best to answer.  This is a very difficult time for me after 17yrs it was not the situation I expected to find myself.

I need to place as many of the horses here now as I can.  I will be going from having my husbands income to not really having much of any.  Which makes it hard to care for 13 horses.  So here is what we have.

Marigold 32 yr old blind OTTB mare.

Makeda approx 25 yr old Standardbred mare needs a special diet due to dental issues.

Ollie  2yr old TB mare Still has slight heart murmur but it seems to be getting better.

Silver approx 18 yr old POA Blind gelding. He does ride and is very sweet.

George is my blind gelding that is the best riding horse I have ever had. Just ask and he’ll do it.

Victoria 12 yr old appaloosa mare. Broke to ride I used to show her, but she has just been hanging out in the pasture.

Hope 18yr old Arab  cross mare. OK for light riding due bad joint in rear leg. Loves kids.

Cherry 25 yrs old QH mare. Very light riding or companion due to old knee injury.

Miss O and Jackjack will stay with Alex

Mini Mow and his momma will most likely go to a friend.

Hannah will return to her previous owner.

Emma is owned by a boarder.

We are in Sophia NC which is almost dead center in the middle of the state.

More info:

I do want to make it clear that this isn't just a fire sale.  I made a promise to each of these horses that they would never suffer again.  Which is why I am trying to place them sooner rather then later.  They will not just  get on the first trailer that shows up.  I am not "advertising" them because I don't want to take the chance of them going to the wrong home.

Rhode Island:

1.  NEER/Solar/RI is in desperate need of a new home.  He is an older 'shrimpy' Belgian (looks like he was put in the dryer:), beaten up AND down by the Amish.  He drives, but does not appear to ride.  He has learned to trust more, likes things calm, likes to eat, and loves carrots now.  He needs a quiet retirement home where no one will yell at him or abuse him, but he is not 'skiddish'.  He is about 15H and stubby, comfortable...if you like riding a couch. 20ish years old. UTD.  Needs work on his feet, he is accustomed to stocks.  He needs somebody with experience to do his feet, he does NOT want them touched!  ):

Solar would need to be retrained to be ridden.  He can be stubborn, but you can barely blame him... he is not mean or nasty, very sweet...just hesitant to trust, and he really should just be retired.  He loves where he is now, but is not a trail horse, and his fosters want a trail horse.

PLEASE help Solar!!  ):

On June 13, 2009, Daisy, a senior Arabian horse that was neglected to near death from starvation was surrendered to and is being attended to by Ahimsa Rescue Foundation in Muldrow, OK. Although Ahimsa Rescue Foundation is primarily a dog rescue, they also work with and take in any domestic animal in need. Daisy has her own webpage, http://www.ahimsarescuefoundation.org/daisy.htm, where you can read about her situation and donate toward her care and recovery. See below. Senator Mary Landrieu is attaching an amendment to the Agriculture Appropriations bill which will criminalize the
transport, possession, sale or purchase of horses with the intent to process for human consumption!
Please CROSSPOST and give her a call if you can and tell her office that you support this amendment 100%.
I just received confirmation from Paula Bacon.
We need to show our support for this-big time. Cross post to your groups and let all of our legislators know that we support this and want it passed NOW! Be sure to call Landrieu and let her office know that we support her 100% in this.
AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION ACTION ALERT
Louisiana Quarter Horse Owners & Members:
We need your assistance this morning. AQHA has been advised Senator Mary Landrieu may try to offer an amendment to the Ag Appropriations bill which would criminalize the transport, possession, sale or purchase of horses with the intent to process for human consumption.
Your U.S. Senator should focus on job loss, the economy or Federal disaster relief for victims still displaced by Katrina. She is more interested in crippling Louisiana agriculture even further by ignoring common sense and facts. Cases of abandoned and neglected horses in the past year have grown exponentially-the economy, loss of processing plants and high feed costs have severely impacted horse owners, particularly in the state of Louisiana.
Call Senator Landrieu's office now at (202) 224-5824 and tell her horsemen care for their livestock and should maintain the right to make end of life decisions for that livestock. Tell her the horse industry cannot afford her brand of legislation!

Horse Health Alerts:

1.  Title EEE Confirmed in Rapides Parish
Release Date 6/24/2009
Following the first confirmed case of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) and resulting equine death this year, Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., is reminding horse owners to vaccinate their horses.

Strain said Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in Baton Rouge identified EEE as the cause of death from blood samples drawn from the horse. The horse was stabled in Rapides Parish.

“Since there is no cure for Eastern equine encephalitis, I urge horse owners to vaccinate their animals,” Strain said. “This is a very preventable disease, but often horse owners wait until it’s too late.

“Only rarely do horses recover from Eastern equine encephalitis,” Strain said. “Even when an animal doesn’t die, it is almost always brain damaged and is never usable again.”
Strain stressed the significance of reporting and testing suspected horses.
“This is a public health concern and we are asking all horse owners to make sure their animals have up-to-date vaccinations and to consult a veterinarian if their horses are displaying any symptoms.

“It’s crucial because that information is passed quickly on to other health officials,” he said. “With the public health concern over Eastern equine encephalitis and other mosquito-borne illnesses, our animal health officials are an important link to the state and nationwide reporting systems.”

State Veterinarian Henry Moreau said Eastern equine encephalitis has a mortality rate of 90 percent. The disease causes encephalitis, or swelling of the brain, in both horses and humans. Humans and horses contract the disease from a mosquito that has bitten an infected bird.

Infected horses become depressed and uncoordinated, develop a sleepy appearance, walk in circles and eventually collapse to the ground.

Horses that have not been vaccinated should have two doses administered about two weeks apart. Once the initial vaccination has been given, an annual booster is sufficient to maintain immunity.

Owners with horses displaying any of these symptoms should contact their local veterinarian. Any suspected equine neuro-encephalitis case should be reported upon suspicion of disease symptoms even if blood is not drawn.

The Department of Agriculture and Forestry is working with local veterinarians, horse owner groups, health officials and local mosquito abatement programs to monitor the spread of the disease.

2.  Hello,

I seen you posted equines wanted.

Could you add us to the list?

We are searching for a mule that needs a good home, broke to ride for the grandchildren. Gentle a must.

Age not really important.  Will be well loved and cared for with plenty of space to roam.

A donkey is also need as a replacement for an elderly man, he uses his donkeys to plow his and neighbors gardens, one passed on this winter and he is searching for one that is at least semi broke. Age unimportant.

Both are guaranteed to find a forever home, what comes here never leaves, they find a safe haven.

We are in Northwest Alabama.  Franklin county.

Thanks in advance.

Jan
